Apologies if this has been posted, but I couldn't find it. Thanks for any help!
Before softbricking, my VZW S4 had OF1 with root (rooted while on OC1 and flashed via FlashFire to OF1).
While trying to set up new payment cards with Android Pay, I tried to temporarily uninstall Xposed framework by flashing the Xposed uninstaller with FlashFire. Android Pay apparently checks for su and Xposed and blocks addition of payment cards if present. After flashing the uninstaller, boot sticks on verizon screen.
I did not have a bootloader like safestrap present to restore backups before boot.
I do have a full backup from FlashFire stored to my SD, but I don't know how I can restore it when stuck in boot...
I'm currently downloading Stock OF1 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/of1-stock-tar-t3216417
...but I expect that will take root from me, if it even works to unbrick it. Then of course, I won't be able to restore my backup via FlashFire...
Any chance I can unbrick and keep root?
Thanks!

Nice job figuring out a solution! I gave up and flashed a downgrade oc1 to unbrick, then accepted the of1 OTA out of frustration. No more s4 root for me. A little bittersweet...

Bro all u needed to do was root oc1 with my link, download root file explorer and browse to system/apps/ delete sdm.apk
That disables ota updates. Hold on i found a thread here with a oc1 downgrade tar to use with odin
Yeah, I know. I did it before you posted your solution. That tar is the one I used to unbrick. I doubt it will work now that I OTA'd.

I used a similar method to root kitkat ng6 by flashing nc1 kernel rooting and flashing back to ng6 kernal. They're actual Samsung signed kernals so odin should have no issue flashing them. Root using wondershare then flash back to OF1 kernal. Keep in mind oc1 kernal on of1 can cause your phone to run weird make sure u enable usb debug prior to putting the phone in download mode for oc1 kernal flash then root with wondershare and flash back to of1

There's no downgrading from of1 because your bootloader was flashed to of1 when u updated BUT you should SHOULD NOT WILL BE ABLE TO be able to root it with oc1 kernal and flash back to of1 kernal then proceed to flashfire of1 DeOdexed and xposed it. Don't take my word for it though do your research you could always brick and that's all on you I'm only suggesting what rocks to look under I've read of people having rooted of1 with xposed working. The kernal switch rooting is fairly new to of1 it was common on kitkat
---------- Post added at 08:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:32 PM ----------
In other words you're stuck on of1 but shouldn't be a big deal if u have root and xposed working then you're better off than oc1 because of1 got some bugs fixed over oc1
I had rooted of1 with xposed before I softbricked. Rooted oc1 with kingroot then flashfired the "rooted" deodexed of1 to maintain root and xposed it. It worked but was a little buggy compared to xposed on kitkat. I think I'm just going to hold off anyway. I actually accepted the OTA as a way to futureproof me from messing with it anymore I was spending too much time tinkering.

My rooted oc1 with xposed is running flawless. Battery life is also better than before I soft bricked. Weird. Screw that. I got an s3 on jellybean rooted for backup. I still got unlimited so an unrooted phone is useless to me. I don't have home Internet I tether all day errday
So I softbricked my verizon galaxy s4 of1 bootloader using flashfire to install a rom. It's stuck on the screen with the unlock and custom sign. How did you get your phone back to normal?
Flash the OF1 tar file in Odin. Use the AP slot and make sure it's checked. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3203361 That's the tar file thread.

I just wanted to confirm that you can Odin back to MJ9 4.3 from the newest ND3 4.3 to regain root. This is for 4.3 bootlocked GN2s ONLY. It was quite painless actually, all my data was as it was before. I backed up to the internal memory using Helium just in case (since I lost root), but I was able use saferoot without issue and am now back to rooted.
I had used Kingo before to root, so I am actually glad to use saferoot this time since I am planning to install SafeStrap and flash N3BULA over stock soon.

This is what I have been looking for except it says to "REGAIN" root.. I have never had it (ROOT) to start with.. So will this still work?
and
where do I get the correct MJ9 since I did not get it off my phone before I lost it.?? or am I ODIN back to out of the box state which is VRALJB?
Odin 7 or Odin 9
I have read ODIN7 ? but Odin9 is newest as far as I can tell...want to double check.
thanks so much!!!!

thebat1, since I am assuming you are on bootlocked ND3 from your screenshot, you will mess up/brick your phone trying to flash VRALJB. You can only go back to MJ9 at this point. The thread I used which is the same posted by iooooooc -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...4207&nocache=1 says "4.1.1 VRALJB- http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2043636 (Unless you purchased your device within the first month of release and never took the OTA update, DO NOT use this)".
I am pretty sure it doesn't matter if you rooted under MJ9 or not. I was able to Odin without root and I wouldn't see why not being rooted when on MJ9 would not enable you to use Odin (since the whole point of Odin is to flash Samsung phones). I'd make a Helium backup just in case though.
You can read the thread I linked and posted by iooooooc to find out how to reflash. It's the same one I used. It has links to Odin and the MJ9 firmware (look for "VRUEMJ9 4.3" with the warning "ONLY USE THIS IF YOU TOOK THE 4.3 OTA!!") and the PIT file you'll need.
You can also read about and get links to all flavors of Odin (you need v3.07 for the VZ Note II) here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...08-2013-odin-3-09-odin-1-85-versions-t2189539
Finally, to root, here's the main thread for Saferoot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
Everything I read is pretty straightforward.
I also haven't received any notification to upgrade back even though I haven't used the .bak renaming method which is interesting.

I decided to bite-the-bullet after reading your post, and all I had to do was re-root as well. All said and done it took me 30 minutes tops to have my phone back. I just received a replacement for my broken Note 2, which I previously had rooted with N3bula. To root my old phone, given it came with 4.1, I just had to Odin the MJ9 files, and then flash N3bula with TWRP . When I got my replacement, it updated to ND3 before I realized what was going on. Does anyone know what files I actually need to flash to get back to MJ9 from ND3? I found a file called I605VRUEMJ9.tar on one of the links posted recently. Since the actual ROM on the phone is the stock 4.3 rom, I assume I don't need to worry about system.img. I don't know about boot.img, cache.img, recovery.img, sboot.bin. I am confident I should flash tz.img, modem.bin, hidden.img.
Thanks!

If you go to Droidstyle's guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34891181 , and then go to section 1b of the guide, you can revert back to MJ9 by following the guide's instructions. You'll want to use the stock file for (VRUEMJ9 4.3) if you're wanting to revert back from ND3.

Amazing..WTG, XDA!
New user here. Been reading a bunch of posts lately as I finally got around to trying to root my SCH-1605, which I have through VZW. For a long time, my big concern was interference on the VZW side. Finally, warranties expired and the urge peaked... just in time for the ND3 OTA update. I tried a couple of methods I found - no success. Finally stumbled on some threads that basically said - ND3 = Out of Luck.
Then I found this post.. :victory:
Truly awesome. Worked like a charm. Looking up good info on locking down the OTA pushes next.
My observations of the differences between my previous attempts and what was missing:
My first attempts:
I neglected to include the 16GB PIT file referenced in the links above (** Note: a few guides I popped across mentioned making sure that only "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time" are checked. When you include the PIT file, it will auto-check "Re-Partition". I left this checked, and it worked like a charm. Can't speak as to the offset of UNchecking this, as - like I said - I left it checked)
I used a different .md5 file that would flag as a fail despite my efforts (I was using a CF autoroot md5). I'm fairly certain this failed due to the OTA update, though it may have been the lack of a PIT file. If someone could provide some more info there, I'm totally open to listen!
Bottom line - my experience was pretty painless after doing adequate research. Thanks a ton! :highfive:
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I also came across some info stating that the downgrade to the MJ firmware might flag the KNOX (I believe?) or a similar issue. Anyone run across any of those issues using these methods? If someone has a quick link to how I could check this for myself, I'd be very appreciative.
@Tangescence
Glad to hear you had success with rooting . This link should help you check on your knox counter status:

Knox warranty void: 0
Confirmed. The flashback left KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0
Lists as Samsung Official Binary with a System Status of Custom.
Looks good!
I know this is a bit of a side tangent, but safestrap should work with MJ9 and saferoot to allow custom ROMs despite the locked bootloader - right?
Again, many thanks to the community!
Right, safestrap was designed to be used for people with the locked bootloader on a rooted MJ9. Here is the safestrap thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51616723
I don't know a lot about safestrap, but I believe the ROM slots are not working yet so you'll have to install a custom Rom over the stock ROM if you want to use it. You'll have to do more research to make sure you know how to use it if you want to give it a go.

Awesome - I'll be researching it tonight and tomorrow. Will post to the safestrap thread with my results and probably a heads up here to redirect. Again, tons of thanks!
Confirmed working
My Verizon Note 2 broke so under warranty I got a replacement device with the latest VRUAND3 build installed. It literally drove me nuts because I was so used to having the advantage of a rooted device with the bootloader unlocked. After doing some research, I came across the information on this thread and it helped me with having at least root access which allows me to take advantage of my Titanium Backup and other apps tailored to rooted devices.
Thank you very much for this post. I hope the devs will one up on Verizon and give the community the ability to have a unlocked bootloader soon. I like the connection speed and coverage with Verizon but their method of controlling how their customers use their devices is just annoying. I paid good money for this phone Verizon! I'm going to do what I wish to do with it to make it unique and personal to me. They just don't seem to understand that. Once again... Thanks. ROOT 4TW!

No, FF is only accessible via a fully functioning device. Unbricking will require Odin.
It appears that Flashfire has the ability to flash to the kernel partition... Would this include devices with the NC5 locked bootloader? Or would that just brick the device?

See here. These apply to all locked bootloader devices: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60070810
After looking around and installing it, I have a quick question.
How is this versus Safestrap? It appears to be more dangerous since it can fail if low memory is available, will cause softbrick if flash kernel partition, and is a little harder to navigate. However, it seems to be better since it can do everything Safestrap can whilst on the system bootup, is non-intrusive at boot pre-splash image, and is built by a bit more reliable developer.
After looking at this thread, it looks like it would be possible to update to an unoffical lollipop build on verzion. Could this be done?
Sorry for so many questions, just trying to see if this is a viable replacement for Safestrap 3.7.5

No. If you flash an NC5 TAR via FF, and you were previously on OC1, you will 100% hard brick.

OF1 is supposed to patch stagefright...SUPPOSED TO. But, the update.zip and the VZW/Samsung documentation tell two different stories. Dates for files/folders in the update.zip from fota do not coincide with any modification Sammy or VZ made, therefore making OF1 nothing more than a wet bandaid.
IMHO...Stick with OC1 (or whatever you desire <OC1), disable auto-retrieve mms thru the stock messaging app settings and, viola...you've got OF1 (pretty much)...
You can use flashfire with unlocked or locked bootloader AFAIK, but as far as I've heard AROMA doesn't play nice with FF. I have flashed kitpop with flashfire and it worked fine.

Thanks for your replies. You two are great.
I'm going to do the FF methods.
Oh damn -- I'm glad I randomly googled the right words first. Looks like you can't go MK2 to 5.0 with FlashFire

***This is the OC1 5.0.1 Full Odin.tar Re-Packaged with the NK4 bootloader for Users that prefer to run Official Stock, Un-Rooted, Firmware but would like to maintain the ability to downgrade back to NC5 (last "Towelroot-able" firmware version)***
Download:
- I545VRUGOC1_Neutered_Full_Odin.tar
Flash using Odin's PDA slot (AP in Odin v3.09+)
Note:
1. The qfuse counter was increased on the OC1 bootloader. This means that if you took the OC1 ota update you are no longer able to downgrade to NC5 and use towelroot to root your device. Do not attempt to flash the above file!! (Hate to say it but if you were interested in root access you should have waited before taking the ota).
2. The most common cause of an Odin flash failure is a bad usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure!

Sending in for Replacement
Some time ago, the microphone stopped working on my phone. I decided to finally start the process of getting a replacement, but VZ wants to do all these OTA tests. They can see that I "may" have rooted my phone. I managed to convince them that the OTA update to 5.0.1 may have been bugged(I did not take the OTA. I follows the steps in @muniz_ri's thread [How-To] Update to I545_OC1 - 5.0.1 and KeepRoot). Since I would need to get the phone 100% stock before sending it in anyway, I want to do that before I call them again. Will this get the phone close enough that they won't care or can't tell? The only thing this leaves out is the OC1 BL, right?

How would I go about updating the BL? I'd rather get it 100% factory if I can.

Download the full firmware from sammobile and flash it with Odin.
If I flash this, will I lose my mdk BL?

Yes, the first bold paragraph says it has the NK4 bootloader.
Don't flash if you want to keep MDK (and you should keep it).

Use the stock ROM in the development section to keep the MDK BL
[ROM] 100% Stock I545_OC1 - 5.0.1 (MDK)
I noticed that the posts say the for the NK4 Bootloader. Isn't the most current version on the Verizon Galaxy S4 the NK1? I just want to confirm before attempting to flash this.

The absolute latest is OC1. But upgrading to that would not allow you to downgrade to anything lower. OC1 was released in 2 phases. First NK4, then the actual OC1. NK4 was released to prepare NK1. You can safely upgrade your BL to NK4 and still downgrade your system to a lower version.
Ok well I'm still on NK1 now and I'm rooted. Is it ok to flash this OC1 with Odin? Does it wipe the device?
Is this the same ROM that is in your other thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...o-update-to-i545oc1-5-0-1-keeproot-t3096558)?
The only difference being that this is an ODIN tar instead?
How do I confirm that my BL is NC5? Doesn't show in About Phone.

So I flash NC5, root, then what? Flashing this will wipe everything.
I am making this thread because I took the OC1 update while rooted and I am asking more experienced members what I should do next.
I mistakenly took the OTA because I had read somewhere that some users upgraded from 4.3 to 4.4 with root from the OTA. I was wrong.
The OC1 OTA removed my root and prevented me from upgrading to LP. I have flashed other kernels and tried everything. I have read every thread in this forum on the topic and I see it mentioned that if I did take the OTA that I no longer had root, but I have found nothing else.
It is my understanding that after taking the OTA that I'll never have root again. Is there at least some way to get my phone completely back to stock and on LP?
Yeah I know it was a rookie mistake and I shouldn't have been so rash but I am here now and I don't know what to do, even after sifting through all the threads about Verizon's LP OTA.
Thank you for all of your help in advance.
I'm pretty sure you can just odin flash back to nc5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172

This causes a boot loop.
However, I was actually able to towelroot on NC5 before the phone restarted, so I am now rooted again! When I encountered this boot loop the first time, I just went back to NK1 instead of trying to towelroot in-between reboots.
I probably could have also cleared cache before reverting back to NC5. Thanks for the help!
If the LP update failed then you were not on OC1. There were two updates. The first was still KitKat NK4. The second was OC1. Those that were rooted were able to take NK4 but the OC1 tended to fail. So there is probably still hope.

I had a similar issue , but I flashed the stock 5.0 ROM using Odin on my computer, but now when I try to flash back to NK1 it softbricks it.
I was able to to flash it back to the stock 5.0 ROM using Odin. I guess there's no downgrading after I did what I did....
Yep, Stuck on the new Lollipop. No root insofar as I know of.
sucks
My replacement s4 came with 5.0.1 on it. Very disappointed with it!!! It's driving me crazy. I can't even see a notification in the top bar smh. All it says is Verizon wireless. I miss root and roms so bad (
So just to be clear.
There is literally nothing i can do to downgrade if i have taken the OC1 OTA on the SCH-I545???
No going back to Kitkat on Verizon S4??
And no root?

I'm thinking about buying a used verizon galaxy s4 off of amazon if it comes with pl1 can it be downgraded back to of1 if not can pl1 be rooted?
I am currently using a Samsung Galaxy on PL1 and I was able to root it with KingoRoot. I rooted it with KingoRoot, then I immediately uninstalled KingoRoot and SuperUser (Which KingoRoot installs) and then installed SuperSU and successfully updated the binaries.
You can, however, downgrade to OF1 using Odin. However, I simply stuck with PL1 because I was still able to root it. So if you are satisfied with just regular root, you can do that on PL1 and easily get SuperSU installed using the method I mentioned.

However, OC1 is the rare one I believe. You cannot downgrade from PL1 to OC1. Apparently if you had OC1, there is an exploit that allow you to install a custom recovery. You cannot do that on PL1 because they locked down the bootloader even more tightly.

Yikes! That's embarrassing! Yeah, haha MDK! I even actually thought it was OF1 at first, and edited it to another incorrect baseband. I'll just remove that paragraph since it's not really even pertinent anyway.
And here is the post I wrote after testing the different basebands to see if they'd flash: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71418457&postcount=67. I went back and forth a few times.
