No exFAT Support... - Nexus 6P General

Hi folks,
I just attempted to access a microSD card formatted as exFAT with this adapter (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013OIGJFE/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_4e-pwbFQRCK91). Although the card was detected I got the message that the format wasn't supported.
The phone did reformat the card as FAT32 which works fine but not for files over 4GB. A bit sad that exFAT isn't supported.

This is shocking ! To date all the newer Androids I had used has no issues supporting exfat format. It is indeed strange if exfat is not supported

This indeed is very strange....exFat is the new standard for external storage...how could Google overlook this?

Cost.. Exfat requires license and $$$
I'd like someone else to test it though.... Sometimes phones are picky about the microsd card and don't detect it properly

I have marshmallow on two devices and exFAT does not work. It's unfortunate and as it stands I have no portable ways to transfer files. I even connected to my computer and it didn't detect the internal storage.

I am going to be using Elementalx kernel as it supports exFat and I need it. I have a 128gb external sdcard that I use.

Not sure if you know, as default when you connect to your computer the default connection is 'charge only' you have to pull the notification down and choose 'MTP' connection.

Solid explorer with its otg plugin can access my exfat formatted media even though marshmallow displays the unsupported media notification.
This is on the nexus 5 though, my 6p should be arriving tomorrow.

Has anybody tried StickMount for exFAT support?

So I'm using the ElemantalX kernel and I still get warnings about the card not being a supported format

However now when I launch ES File Explorer I get a notice that only FAT32 and NTFS are supported ( I'm assuming it detects the card and the exFAT format). I've tried in other file explorers and can't seem to find where USB mounts.
EDIT: just tested using StickMount and I'm able to read/write without issue. However I'm still on the ElemantalX kernel.

Same, works great. Too bad native support isn't seamless though :\
Edit: any news on speeds that you're getting? I'm seeing about 10MB/s (MegaBytes) transfer speed using a USBC 3.1 adapter to PC but I'm not sure how to measure transfer speed on the phone.

Just use EXT4, very easy to get windows to read that as well.

This seems like the best solution. However, after some digging it appears that ext2fsd is only REALLY meant for EXT2 and EXT3/4 work in compatibility mode. However, ext4 seems to use an inode of 256 by default which is not supported by ext2fsd. If you can format your card as EXT4 inode 128 it should be fine.
However I just found this... Paragon makes an EXT driver for Windows 10 and its freeware for personal use (but needs to be registered). I think this is the path I'll take. Thanks for the feedback!

Solid Explorer with the OTG plugin works just fine (although as mentioned above, the compatibility error still comes up). No need for root, custom kernels, etc.

How to upgrade/replace the Micro SD card

Hi,
I am planning to buy a 16GB Micro SD Card for X10 Mini, need help on following
1. Can I buy any 16GB micro sd card (class 6 and above) will it work, or it has to be specifically from SE?
2. Once I have 16GB micro sd card, what are the steps to replace the existing card and its contents. Do i need to copy all the folders from existing micro sd to new sd card? What should be the format of SD card, fat, fat32, ext2/3/4 ? Kindly suggest.
Any other technicalities to take care off ?
Furthermore I would like to use APPtoSD either on 2.1 if its easy or else when 2.2 gets on, so do i need to prepare the new sd card specifically for this?
Thanks
1) don't know, I bought a 16GB online from sandisk and it works well, i can help if you can tell how to get the "class"
2) my sd is in fat32 as the old one so no problems here. I suppose that if you move from fat32 to ext* you need to handle permissions somehow. I use a linux distro and when I do this moves I use the command "cp -a" that preserves permission (doesn't matter for fat) and modification date so if some software relies on modification dates of files it doesn't screw up
Thanks,
Class is written on top of the card. See the attached image the 6 witten inside the circle shows the class.

Does putting in a 16Gb card reduced the performance or increased the lags?
CM 7
I've looked around at a lot of places and haven't found a clear answer to this one yet.
I’ve read a lot of different posts about what the best way to do this is. Some say just copy and paste, some say you need to go into recovery mode and Format the SD to Fat32+ext2+swap first and then convert ext2 to ext3, and some say to use Titanium Backup, and there are other opinions too.
I’m really quite happy with the way the phone is set up at the moment and don’t want to mess things up. My X10 mini, has cyanogen mod 7, and clockwork mod. Some of the apps have been moved to the SD card.
Can anyone tell me the current best method?
Thank you ....

I'm also very interested in how to do this.
Basically use whatever format worked for you with your previous SD card. Oh, another forum member from the x10 forums was told by a Sony Ericsson rep that SD cards above class 4 would not give any further speed boost, but that's for the X10. I think that the same should apply for the x10 mini. Higher classes makes for faster loading of media and games moved to SD card, but actual playing(i.e after it has fully loaded) will be no faster. It will make SWAP faster, though.

I have tried a 32gb card but it dosn't recognise it
Anyone knows if the new Custom Roms / Kernel make the Mini Pro recognise a 32gb SD card?
Well I checked the original card that came with the phone and it was FAT. The new card was preformatted to FAT32.
I left the new card at FAT32 and plugged them both into a Windows PC and copied the whole lot over. This worked fine.
I suspect that the whole ext2 ext3 thing is to allow the phone to treat that partition as if it were internal memory. Useful if the phone memory is already full.

I recently upgraded my sd card from 2G to 4G, I just copied and pasted files. This seemed to work but since the upgrade I am having trouble flashing roms in cwm recovery. I get an error saying zip (bad) installation aborted.
Not sure if it is related but one to think about.

[Q] Overcome the large file limit of FAT32?

I want to be able to copy files >4Gb to my Touchpad. This is so I can watch HD movies on the device.
I already tried adding resizing the media partition and adding an ext3fs partition using "Tailor" (a webOS app). Although this is easy and it worked, I couldn't find any way to have this partition mount at boot time and be seen by my Android apps.
There are a couple of posts out there on the web from people claiming that they "reformated" the shared partition (/media/internal) to ext3fs successfully.
Has anyone here done that, and if so (a) how? and (b) were you able to have it mount and be visible from android apps?
Otherwise does anyone have any suggestions please?
cheers
Paul

Getting somewhere...
I tried again having found out that the ext3 partition I created in webOS is found at /dev/mapper/store-ext3fs
Under Android - everything below is done in Android
I am able to mount this partition to my fake sd card (I just created a folder there called "ext").
Code:
su
mount /dev/mapper/store-ext3fs /sdcard/ext
I found that copying files by USB doesn't work while my ext3 partition is mounted, which is a pain - would be good to get that fixed. Anyone have any ideas?
I am now testing copying over a >4Gb file to my ext3 partition using ftp client. Will take some time on my crappy wifi, hence the comment about fixing USB.
I found that in order to make the ftp process work, I had to give full permissions to this folder.
Code:
chmod /sdcard/ext
I am a noob, so if anyone can help me with a less insecure set of permissions I would be grateful.
I'll post an update later on.
Nah, didn't work. After a few hours of copying I went to bed, this morning the folder is empty. I'm not sure if there was an error or anything.
My suspicion is that it crapped out when it got to 4Gb because even though the partition is ext3, it is mounted at a mount point on a FAT32 partition.
I realised I can test this more easily and eliminate possible network errors or ftp client instability, I'm running
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=output.dat bs=1024 count=51200000
within my /sdcard/ext folder (my mount point), this should create a 5Gb file.
I'm expecting this to fail, again because even though the partition is ext3, it is mounted at a mount point on a FAT32 partition. If anyone can help me to mount the partition some other way so its not mounted in a FAT32 partition, or point to another method to overcome the file size limit, I would be grateful.
thanks
Paul
That worked!
dd-ing a large file worked. I think I got my calculations wrong so when it got to >7Gb I just stopped it.
Now it would be great to get this working such that I can use USB instead of ftp to get my movies across.... Anyone?

USB transfers not working
Anyone help me identify partition number for my ext3 partition please?
My ext3 partition is all working except when mounted I cannot use USB transfer.
Believe this is because my vold.fstab mounts the first available partition as SD card.
So would like to know correct partition number for SD card and ext3 partition.
I gave up on this in the end. Assured by clearly very clever jcsullins over on the cm touchpad IRC that the partition doesn't get a number and I would not be able to get my USB file transfer working. I also found the available media players (or maybe CM itself at the moment?) unable to cope with my 720P movies.
All is not lost though. I'm having more luck over on webOS using touchplayer and an overclocked kernel.
Thanks to those who tried to help with this!

SDXC card not working in GS3

My friend got a 64gb micro SDXC card, and it won't work in his phone. It says:
"Blank SD card
SD card is blank or has unsupported filesystem."
He is running CM10.1 23/3 nightly. I put the SD card in my stock 4.1.1 note 2 and it recognised and formatted it fine. Put it back in his and nothing.
Ideas?

Aaaaaaaaand I've got a card reader, tried formatting it to FAT32 via two methods.
guiformat.exe (admin)
fat32format (command line)
The error im getting is GetLastError()=32. This error means that my SD card is being used by some other process but i cant for the life of me find where it's being used...
If you have access to a Windows system, you'd be better using that. I've got a 64Gb card and I had to format it with Win7. It was exfat.
If you don't, you could always take it with you to a local pc store and try to format when no clerks are watching

Holy moly i know all this
Thank you forum but the information I'm trying to obtain is a way to locate and stop the process that is using my card and preventing me from formatting to FAT32 (which btw isnt an option in Windows >right click 'format', hence guiformat.exe)
Use GParted!
For a FAT32 format on a >32GB MicroSD, may I suggest that you run the GParted (Gnome Partition Editor) Live CD? It's free and it's usually the best way to fomat a microsd card (that's how I did it).
I know it's a rather simple operation, but at least with GParted you're formatting it the right way: no size limitations, proper partition table and initial sector layout, etc... Moreover, no pesky processes using your drive.
You don't have to install anything, just make a bootable USB disk, boot it from Startup, and launch GParted. Right-click and format to FAT32 (or whatever you want). It might sound complicated but it's dead simple. You only need:
The GParted LiveCD ISO
Tuxboot, to make the bootable USB
Both available at Sourceforge, quick and easy, and never run into formatting problems again with the crappy windows disk management gui and their useless limitations.
If you absolutely want to use Windows for this, there's one way you can check which process is using your card:
Download Process Explorer from Microsoft's website or Sysinternals
Click the Find menu, and choose Find Handle or DLL...
Type the file name (name of the file which is locked by some process.)
After typing the search phrase, click the Search button

What next my good man.
Run into some kind of problem. :/
read-only file system, also its flagged as boot?
Oh...
Okay, obvious questions first: are you using a USB card reader or a microsS -> SD adapter? If using the latter, careful with that little physical lock on the side of the adapter.
Also, is the card usable on your Note after having showed the error in CM?
But otherwise... well I remember the last time I had this issue, but you're not gonna like it. Usually an SD card reverts to read-only mode when something is really wrong with it, usually so you can pull out your data before it dies completely. But it's weird that a card would die so quickly.
For me it was a 64GB Sandisk SDXC, bought it when it was still pretty expensive, and, well, that read-only crap was kinda the end of it... The same night I got that error message I bought a new one :S
Usually those big 64GB ones have lifetime warranties on them if they're Sandisk, or this other huge brand (Lexar I think?). So even if it's messed up you can get a new one!
Anyways I hope I'm wrong, please do tell if you have found a solution, or if you try anything new !
Eh...
I am using both at the same time. SDXC > SD adapter (not locked on the side) > USB card reader.
The card is perfectly functional in non Cyanogen ROM's.
In Windows Explorer the card reads as 64GB.
In stock ROM's the card reads as 64GB.
There is nothing wrong with the card. So i guess ill be googling and learning about read-only filesystems now.
If its fixed i will report how i got it to work. If i cannot fix it i will be abandoning Cyanogen.
Thanks for all your help, i appreciate it.
:highfive:

*stares intently at my card reader*
*raises eyebrow*
*removes MicroSD from SD adapter*
*inserts MicroSD into conveniently provided port*
Well, i got it to work by taking it out of the adapter. It still claimed it was being used by a process so i did it through Gparted.
Put the card in my phone and its reading properly.
I guess thats the end of that chapter.

SD Card freezes phone/stuck when trying to back it up

Hi,
Just this night I've been using my sdcard in a normal way, browsing internet, downloading files when suddenly my phone couldn't boot after flashing bootanimation (zip made by trusted developer so that's not the problem). Now when I connect my SD Card to the phone it will either say "preparing sdcard" forever or just simply freeze phone after few seconds. I tryed to connect it via working adapter with my PC to back it up... After copying few files sdcards unmounts from the reader... I've tryed on XP and it shows some command errors while trying to copy files in a regular way. I was ONCE able to flash few zips via recovery in order to make my phone boot up again it worked. Now I'm scanning my SD Card using Norton Internet security 2013 - Paid version - not cracked, and the sdcard seems to stay mounted to the PC. Unfortunately after trying to copy files from SD Card to PC it just freezes explorer.exe and unmounts itself...
Please help me, I really have some important pictures on this sd card
PS. 32 GB SanDisk Class 10 UHS-I (grey and red one)
PS. 2 I was using swap partition, maybe my sdcard went dead from constant reads and writes?
PS. 3 Using linux I managed to copy 81 MB... then any copying froze but ubuntu didn't... Damn, thats weird
It appears to randomly stop reading from SD Card as now it stopped at 153,1MB out of 422MB, all thumbnails of photos were shown properly though.
well first connect ur sdcard to an old mobile you have then connect mobile to computer
backup your data then use a partition tool to delete partition of sdcard then recreate it as FAT32 partition and try to put sdcard to your mobile again
if still, then wipe data/factory reseyt your rom
if doesn't work then let me know
Sent From My U8160 using xda-developers app
Well, connecting to an old mobile isnt an option as the SDCARD does the same thing even on xperia T which isnt that bad and that Xperia T never had this sdcard connected before.
I'd love to backup my data, but I can't
Full rom wipe and reflash fresh was done straight after getting problems with this sdcard.
Unfortunately it still doesn't work
I got the error I was talking about!

EDIT: I'm trying to recover photos and movies (most important files) via BadCopy Pro, any other recommendations if it wouldn't work?
EDIT2: It seems that when I'm slowly copying data (scanning sectors) sdcard doesn't seem to unmount or do other crazy stuff, any other suggestions so I'll keep file names and structure? I don't care much about copying time, I can run copying going all night.
I've recovered like 90% of data. Afterwards I've tried to perform Low Level Format... But this goddamn sdcard had to eject just at the start, therefore partitions got deleted, I'm trying to rebuild bootsector with testdisk but it takes ages, even after looking at tutorials online it takes so long to rebuild bootsector, no idea why...

Sandisk 128GB Dual USB drive

I bought a sandisk 128GB dual usb drive with the assumption that it will work as a OTG usb for my Note 3, but every time I plug it into the phone, it would say "USB mass storage connected", then immediately it would say "USB mass storage removed safely".
I installed Stickmount, stickmount says that it has mounted it, but I can not find it anywhere using Root Explorer.

Have you tried looking in the /mnt/ folder? It might not be called by a standard name. You can open the /mnt folder in ES Explorer (or whatever file browser you use) and see what shows up. Then install your drive and refresh to see what the drive is called.
I've always used Stickmount (though you need root) and rarely have problems mounting storage - I don't know if it's still required!

I use the 32gb dual USB on my rooted note 3 and it runs fine without having to install any additional apps to enable it. Could it be the size that's causing the issue?

Hello, I'm using a 64 Gb Sandisk Ultra Dual and it works fine. I suppose you should check if you changed its format type. In case it is a fat32 it must work so ask for a refund or change... Not a matter of Gb, since I purchased a 200 Gb lexar microsd and also tried it as otg with no issues...
