Every so often I will pick up my phone and notice that my phone is using mobile data at the same time that my wifi is connected. I have noticed this off and on since day one but havent thought of asking if anyone else is experiencing this.
When I notice it, I disable wifi and re-enable it which usually takes care of the issue.
The problem is that I only get 3gb of data a month and when I am on wifi, I should not be using my mobile data.
Attached is a screenshot showing both 4G LTE and Wifi connected at the same time.
I couldn't begin to guess the cause of your problem but I think I can suggest a workaround.
Download Tasker and create a profile that disables mobile data when connected to certain wifi connections. Should help
Make sure your mobile data setting isn't on. Advanced Wi-Fi Settings.

Thanks swimm12984. I had thought about that as well
prp2: that's not a setting in Advanced Wifi
I'm thinking this is intentional. To be able to reliably do a WiFi to VoLTE or GSM handoff when using WiFi calling, for example, the phone needs to periodically maintain a connection with the mobile network. Otherwise, if you happen to lose wifi signal or walk out of signal range, your call will drop.
I noticed this on my Note 3 as well when I was using it on WiFi, but only after they issued an update to 'fix' wifi to volte/gsm handoff issues.
Try disabling VoLTE in your calling settings and see if it still occurs.

That actually makes sense. I had wifi-calling turned off but didn't think of turning VoLTE off as well. I will not be able to tell right away as it happened sporadically but I will comment back after a day or so.

Ah, in that case, I can almost guarantee that's what it is. If VoLTE is on, but wifi calling is off, then it will have to maintain it's connection to the data network for sure! Let us know how it goes, but I'm pretty confident

Your mobile data will also turn on while on WiFi if you're sending/receiving MMS with a third-party SMS app, like Textra. Those apps do not have access to WiFi Calling on the V10 so they must use mobile data for MMS.

I have a HTC Fuze. The last few ROMS that i have been using (Energy, RRE, Tael), all the Apps always use the 3G internet to do their work even if a much faster Wifi is connected. Is there any way to make all apps(including things like email) globally prefer the Wifi when available? Also I dont want to have to keep changing settings to do this, It simply needs to be "If Wifi available use it, else use 3G"
Thanks in advance.
What i did was to go to start>settings>connections>advanced>select networks and change the default connection to the internet to "My work network", rather than my 3G network. This way, if theres any connection to the internet needed, my phone will use my wifi connection. The problem with this, however, is that when you dont have a wifi connection available, the phone will not connect to the internet unless you change the above setting back to your 3G network. If anyone knows a better way, please let us know
no i cant keep switching. thats too much trouble. there must be a better way.

Does it automatically connect to WiFi when a known network is within range even when the phone is in sleep? If yes, does it disconnect once not in use for a while?

As far as I know there is no way to do it automatically. You can use one or the other but they must be switched manually. All HTC phones have always worked this way. Maybe if the demand was high enough which apparently it is not a Chef could come up with an app that would do it. But for now you must do it manually.

that is extremely failurous. not preferring the fastest internet connection is major fail. did not know that.
My phone does this automatically. It uses the WiFi whenever it's on. If the WiFi is off, it uses the data connection.
Maybe I'm understanding it wrong?

what the heck? how? u must help me find out..
i think it does prefer wifi over 3g in WM 6.5...!!
to check it out here is wt i've done....turn data connection off...check that its on in the notification manager "when u click on the task bar"..then run any app that needs internet " opera, msn messenger, email...etc" while this app is online..
now there r two ways to check it
1-the notification manager & see if it turned to 3g data connection...if so u should find a timer running in ur service provider section, if not then its only using wifi
2-check the communication manager & see if it turned the data connection on, if its off then its using wifi...
thats how it is with my touch pro...i'm using energy rom nov. 08 build
Indeed it prefers wifi connections 2 data, but You have to :
1. Have Known wifi spots in range
2. Keep wifi connection on, while in stand by
Keep in mind that if a program starts to use the data connection it wont change to use the wifi one. So firstly connect and then open programs.

apparently its some sort of combo of this. i am using 6.5. any apps that have been using 3g continue with it. and i have to go to the comm screen and turn off data to force new apps to consume wifi. which isnt too bad, certainly not as bad as going to the network options. i would wish they made this a bit more seamless like with the desktop technology, i can switch from wired to wireless lan without even dropping a skype call.

now i have discovered a new problem. even if i open the app after i have wifi turned on and data turned off, some apps just dont want to use the wifii.
Bing maps and google maps for example just tell me there is no internet.

Hi guys, in this days i have noticed a problem with my gsII.
Sometimes I have the gsII connected to my router but internet connection doesn't work.
I'll try to explain better what i mean... I start wifi on my gsII and use internet connection without problem. Then I set the phone in standby mode leaving wifi on. When after a while i want to use internet connection, it doesn't work. The telephone is still connected to my router but i can't use internet on the phone.
The only way to make internet connection work is to disable wifi e then reactivate it.
This is really frustrating....
I've got the telephone from three months but only now I'm noticing this problem because first I used to disable the wifi and activate it only when i need it.
Am I the only to have this problem? Is there a solution?
Thanks to everyone in advance... any help would be appreciated
A video is more than thousands of words, so this is an "example video" of the bug:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4um-AqLk1jw
Test it with a different router, i.e. Cisco E4200.
It would a good idea but i have to buy a new router or go to some friend's house for 2-3 hours. I'll keep this idea in my mind thanks
I have this problem, mines a bt home hub v3. Don't think its the router I blame the phone. I have to restart phone to make it connect with ability to use internet

I do not know what " standby mode" is? I have the same phone and have no problems with wifi. The phone goes to sleep when I do not use it and awakes when I use it.
It seems that your phones wifi is sleeping and not waking up. I always turn it off when not using it anyway. Not the full answer but it works for me.

For me the Wifi would work perfectly at first and then after the phone had been left for a while I would try to use it and get 'no connection' type errors. Sometimes it would even stop working even if I just waited too long with the phone still on in my hand.
I found that if I either disabled router wifi security or set it to WEP the problem disappeared. The issue occurred on 2.3.3. My router is a DLink one fyi. I have yet to test 2.3.4 which came out yesterday in Sweden. Ill let u know.

I tried changing the channel also. I have heard others getting this to work. Didn't work for me. You can use Wifi Analyser app on phone to find a clear channel and see how u go changing your router perhaps?
I tried re flashing also using factory restore. No fix for me.
Also noticed that u can sometimes get phone to work by toggling Network Data on/off. Not really fun either.
The wifi channels and security settings I am talking about are settings in the router not the phone. What wifi security are you using in your router?

I am not a believer the router is at fault in any case. I would entertain an incompatibility but nothing more.
Original router and security settings work fine for...wait for it...an iphone 3gs and a Motorola Defy (yes the phone which seems to have issues with doing everything else!)
Either way an incompatibility is not acceptable either if that's what it is

Now i'm trying to use channel 5 with the router ( but yesterday I've tested channel 6 and 13 without any result)

Is NOT the phone.
i have the same problem reported in the 1st post.
i have been turning wifi off and then on again for a quick fix until now but i think the solution might be to drop the security on the router from WPA to WEP. Haven't tried it yet tho, because it doesn't bother me that much.
I had an ipad previously (before i had the SGS2) and it had exactly the same behaviour. I looked up the problem then and found a FAQ from the ISP that mentioned a compatibility problem between ipad and that router, so their suggestion was to set the router to WEP only.

For me it happens always after the phone comes back from stand by with wifi on.
steps to reproduce:
1-turn wifi on, and check it's connected and working
2-press power button to turn off screen
3-turn phone back on, try to access a new web page, it doesn't work
I noticed that while it's in stand by i will still receive email notifications so it probably only looses the connection when i turn it on again.
Also, if there was some program working (say, a download) when i went into standby it will probably still be transferring when it comes out of stand by, it's just the new connections that fail.
I have a technical question ... you can use the 3G network for surfing the Internet and at the same time the wifi network to move files only?
Simply put no. Phones are not made to use 2 different wireless signals at once.
Bat cave One
The only way to use both is setting a Wi-FI access point on your phone. Still, you can't do things you want to: PC connects to smartphone just to get internet data.

Do you even understand what your asking? Voice and data are 2 very different things. Data and call signals are handled by different process. The antenna are set to do one voice and one data. Think about it. Even dual sim card devices can only use one at a time.
Bat cave One
Yes I understand ... so it is not technically possible to manage wifi and 3g antenna at the same time because data can only handle one job at a time? I thought the wifi module and the module 3g were managed separately...
This is an android software limitations?
When you use the wifi 3g module is put into the off state to save battery, works only the incall module. When you disable the wifi 3g module change the status to up. About your question no, it's impossible to use wifi and 3g at the same time to make 2 different operation

That's incorrect. Android phones can use multiple wireless signals at once (wifi, cell, mobile data, bluetooth, nfc). And they can have multiple network interfaces up at the same time just like any linux box can. It just happens that the network manager turns of mobile data when you turn on wifi, but that's on purpose (to save you battery/cost), and not because the phone isn't capable of it.
Not sure why you say with such authority there's no way around it. If you don't know the answer to something for sure, better don't give a wrong answer.
There's even an app on the play store that can loadbalance a download over wifi and mobile data at the same time:

I say this from past experience that the WiFi antenna could not get a signal at the same time as the data antenna.
Now while this may have changed. I will look into it myself before I pay much heed to it as anything more then smoke and mirrors.

Why does the 4G stay on when connected to WiFi, it does not seem to be using any data but wouldn't it save battery if it turned the 4G off when not in use? I used to have sprint and mobile data always automatically turned off when on WiFi, this is my first verizon phone, is this normal on all verizon devices?

I hear you - if the 4g radio is on it is theoretically eating your battery; although it may be negligible with the power saving built into the phone. If you want 4g/data completely off while on WiFi you can download a tasker app from the play store and set it up to automatically switch off data when WiFi is connected & vice versa; it's been working well for me. You'll lose stock MMS if data is turned off though, so consider that before you use a tasker. You can always grab a 3rd party messaging app for MMS if you need it, and they will work because they are only over WiFi.
But if it is just an aesthetic thing, as mentioned in a post above, you can hide the icon using g3 tweaks.
The only difference is that these phones show you what mobile data connection you have. On T-Mobile, you may have a phone that only shows the bars when on WiFi, but it's still connected, just look at an app like Signal Check Pro.
This is not eating your battery, it's not being used, it simply tells you what connection is idle for when you are no longer using WiFi.
Is this a bug or is it just the way Huawei does it if so it's really sucks so when I turn on mobile hotspot on my honor 8x jsn-l23 it disables use of my mobile data I just wanna let my friend use my hotspot cause he only had a WiFi phone but can't cause then I can't use my data it's pretty messed up cause I've used a lot of devices and this is the first one I've had that does this is there a fix for it or no any help would be greatly appreciated

This is not normal.
Reset network settings and try again.
The core job of Hotspot it to share your mobile data with other devices through Wi-Fi.

In Settings go to "Wireless & networks>Mobile network>Advanced" and activate Mobile data always on if it's not active.

Is data transfer is taking place or not while hotspot is enabled?
Maybe it's due to low data transfer rate you were not able to use it while hotspot is enabled.
