Nexus 6P and Project Fi - Nexus 6P General

Anyone using bought nexus 6p with project Fi deal. If so how was your experience

I did, I am actually using the Fi network and financing the device through Fi. To start with, the Fi network seems to be great so far (could be just my area though). I have full signal no matter where I go and haven't dropped a call yet. Download speeds seem to be anywhere between 20-30Mbits down and 10-20 Mbits up.
The ordering process was simple, the app is great, and Google upgraded me to overnight shipping free of charge. I already installed TWRP and PureNexus custom ROM, everything works flawlessly! All-in-all I'm very impressed with Google and Fi. As long as it stays like this, I will more than likely use Fi for the foreseeable future.

What are the benefits of ordering the phone as a bundle with Fi?

Loving Fi with it.

I pre-ordered through Fi the very day I got my invite from them on 10/16. I bought a 32gb graphite outright. I have LTE more or less everywhere and I get similar speeds as posted above. Google also upgraded me to overnight shipping free of charge. Honestly not bad.
Aside from that, when I signed up on their site there was no option for nexus protect like when you order from play store. I inquired with Google and Fi does not yet have device protection, but when it is available it will be a monthly charge on your bill (no price available yet). It will cover the device as long as you have it on the service from what I was told.
He had no other timeframe besides a few months. You can also call to have your email added to a list to be notified when device protection is available.
Call quality is never an issue and I really love the phone. I love the FI app as well. It makes everything pretty simple. No complaints so far.

There are no added benefits, order through Google/Fi or Huawei, it's all the same phone, only difference was I was looking to get out of my current Carrier and decided to try out Project Fi. So far I do not regret my decision.

I will try it end of this month. I suppose it is worth it only if you use low amount of data.

Ordering through Fi gives you the option of 0% financing for 24 months.

Bingo. I love the concept and used fi for a few months, however the economics do not make sense if your data hawg just quite yet IMO.
I already have an unlimited plan w/T-Mobile and coverage for where I travel didn't merit the switch at this time.

I got on Fi with my 32GB Nexus 6P.
I was previously on AT&T on a friend's account since he got a pretty good discount through his previous employer, and splitting a shared data plan ended up being pretty good for me too. I was only paying hi $60 a month. I barely used any data, so I went with Fi.
I requested the invite and ordered the SIM right before I purchased the 6P. I bought the phone through the Play Store instead of through Fi. I was debating going with the 5X, but went with the 6P. Since I had the SIM before I had the phone, I just filled out the account information on the Fi webpage and when I got the phone, slapped the SIM in it, fired it up and went through the transfer. Took about 2 hours to be complete, but it went smoothly.
Since I'm mostly at home or at the office, I haven't had much time outside. Works fine on wifi. Only made a couple calls, so far it's been fine. I've got a coworker that likes the idea so much, he's getting on it soon, too.

i bought my 6p outright from google with the plan to transfer my work account to it, but verizon gave me the run around. i figured i'd try FI since it so cheap, but worrried about service since it uses tmobile and sprint towers. Fortunately it had far exceeded my expectations. the week i have had it has had full service when my verizon note 3 has had very little or no service. only once has it lost service, in the middle of nowhere, which is also a complete dead zone for everyone else . i have no complaints, and love the fact my boss gets angry everytime his verizon s6 edge doesnt have service and he has to use my phone. my experience is in the triangle area in north carolina.

I had a few hiccups setting up the service and getting SMS to work with Messenger instead of Hangouts, but Google Support was available immediately on chat and helped resolve the issue (I figured out the SMS problem before them). Their email support is definitely not as knowledgeable as the chat folks from my experience.
I haven't ventured anywhere too crazy to make an in-depth statement about the service quality, but I had TMO before... so I wasn't expecting it to be significantly different.
My biggest complaint so far is not having a standard greeting option for voicemail... meaning you have to leave an actual voice recording for the greeting. More of a personal annoyance I suppose. The nice thing about their voicemail service is that the visual voicemail translates the message to text.
One other thing I noticed... I couldn't list files on my FTP server running at home via the project fi network, but I could over a remote wifi network. Also, seems to be an issue connecting to my VPN configuration at my house over the fi network which I believe has to do with IPv6 implementation on TMO. There is a way to modify the APN on TMO to correct this, but I don't think there is a way to do this with Fi.
I ordered the SIM card separate from the phone.

Does call forwarding work on project fi? I plan to forward all calls of another line to my project fi account

What did you do to fix the SMS issue on Hangouts, I've got the same problem, slow or no SMS unless I use Messenger.

That wasn't exactly my issue. Basically, I found that there was two settings to change to make Messenger the SMS app. Even though I had Messenger set at the default, I was still receiving incoming messages in Hangouts. If you go in the Hangouts app, settings, your account ([email protected]), then uncheck the box next to 'Messages' under where it says "Project Fi calls and SMS - your phone number". That wasn't intuitive because where I was originally going was in the settings of Messenger and setting that as the default app for SMS... which I believe is still necessary.
Not sure if this will solve your issue, but I haven't had problems since changing it. Maybe clear the hangouts and/or Messenger data too?
Edit: Sorry, seems like you want to use Hangouts as the SMS app? I wanted to use Messenger.

I ordered the 6p 128gb direct from Fi they upgraded shipping to over night for free. Had a few problems with Boost mobile porting my number but the Fi rep conferenced called them to port it over. A few hours later everything worked. I live about 80 miles from DC and travel there quite a bit. I noticed on my LG F7 because of all the wifi connections I use I was only using about .5 gb per month even though I listen to a lot of music and watch a lot of video. The last month i experimented with the F7 and turned off wifi and I used 2.5 gb of data. I figured why pay Boost for the extra 2gb when I am not using it, and Boost phone suck even though their rate is good. With Fi I only pay for the Data I use so it should average about 25 per month instead of the 35 I was paying Boost. The Nexus 6p wifi connects faster than the f7 also so that might save an additional amount. I have travelled to DC several times and my Data usage was 49 mb next to nothing since every where I go has wifi. The connections were flawless and the features on the phone are fantastic. FI also says it has a relationship out there for wifi networks. I dont know who that is but Google should have a lot of connections available. I also have a xfinity password from my best friends network so that should increase coverage.
I would recommend Fi to anyone that has the coverage of the Sprint and Tmob. networks. It would help to have a concentrated area such as Wash DC so as to take advantage of Wifi. I am not looking back.

I am using Fi right now in Louisiana.....been only a few days but so far it has been good.

I'll be using Fi in Puerto Rico tomorrow. I'll be posting a review soon.

Even though I got invited to Fi, my data usage is the issue for me. I currently have "unlimited" data with T-Mobile which is why I haven't budged yet. On average a month, I use 12-15 GB's a month. I do a lot of web surfing and watching videos.
And its 2 lines for $100 for unlimited text, talk and data. Can't beat that at the moment. If Fi offers unlimited data in the future, I might consider it.

I ordered my phone through FI. But they have a big issue with numbers ported to FI from Google Voice. You can get SMS messages, but you can't send to some carriers. You can send if you use the GV app to send, but that's clumsy. They are working on it, but have no ETA for an actual fix yet. So I cancelled.
But the whole 'pay for only what you use' thing sounds great. But it makes you very conscious of every MB you use. Do you want to stream music on this trip? It's going to cost you a dollar. It just felt too much like the old days of paying 35 cents per minute for every call you made.

AT&T vs T-MOBILE

Hi:
Up until now, I have been using T-Mobile ever since the XDA came out.
Used a "visorphone" before that. I do NOT use T-Mobile's Internet access (T-zones) ever since I got hit with a $180+ overage charge the first month I used it.
So.
Here is my issue:
Starting a few months ago, I noticed that, even though I do NOT use T-Mobile for any Internet access (I call up my own ISP instead from the XDA), T-Mobile are charging me something like $.50 for every email sent or received from the XDA using my own ISP. I suppose they monitor the traffic or something. When I protested that they shouldn't charge me for anything Internet-related, only the minutes used to call my ISP, they told me basically that they don't give a damn what I think, and that I will continue to be charged $.50 for every email. They show up on my bill as "e-note" to the phone number "500."
I think that's ridiculous and possibly illegal since it doesn't involve their servers or their services at all, but I don't have the energy to deal with their untrained "Wireless Data Group." It would take years to explain this to them. Just getting them on the phone took over 1 hour. This is partly a warning post, that this is what T-Mobile is doing, and we should know about it. So, I am looking into switching to AT&T.
My questions for anyone reading this:
1) anyone else have that billing issue with t-mobile?
2) is at&t any better? do they charge for internet traffic even if you haven't signed up for their services?
3) i don't think i have simlock issues, the unlock util from this site says that it's already unlocked. rom is 4.00.21 ENG, radio stack 6.24.00
from yorch.net.
4) is there anything i should know? won't this t-mobile build of "windows mobile 2003" rom work with at&t ?
any info appreciated, you can email thomas at pullen.com (removed the @ for the spam bots).
thanks!
TMO is pretty bad, iv experienced their levels of ignorance too, but once in a while, u can incounter sumone who knows alot about what they do
you should have never used tzones (if it wasnt unlimited) for transfering big amounts of data, thats why u got charged so much, for going over the allowd data amount
when connecting to your own ISP, are u connecting using THEIR # ? ... if so, then i dont know where TMO gets these ideas 4 charging u extra + the phone call
to unlock u need to go back to a 2002 rom, with the unlock software
ur build will work, but it would be better to switch to 4.00.05 , since u wont need all the useless TMO apps and what not
Hey tpullen,
Sorry to hear about your terrible time with T-Mobile.
Q: What type of plan do you have with T-Mobile?
If its only a voice plan with no data the .50 sounds about right and will be the same if you move over to AT&T. As a matter of fact AT&T's data charges are higher.
It doesn't matter that you're calling your own ISP, the fact still remains you're sending/receiving data on a voice only plan.
HTH
thanks
hey:
thanks for the replies. to answer your questions:
i had the t-mobile 3,000 minutes for $49 plan. it is only free long distance for the southeast u.s.; i think it's called a 'neighborhood' plan.
no data at all in my plan; i would call my own isp and surf the web and check email. only about 3 months ago t-mobile started charging me to check email, but not for the web. my complaint is that i am using my own isp, and the call comes out of my minutes. yes, it's sending data with a voice-only plan, but hey! i have a dial-up phone line, nothing fancy, a land line in my house. it's voice-only. if i plug a modem into my home phone line and call my isp, should i expect to get a bill from my phone company for every email i look at? to my way of thinking, and anyone is free to disagree, if i'm not USING your services then i don't want to PAY for your services. unless it is a t-mobile email, web, or proxy server i'm talking to, i don't expect to pay t-mobile. the minutes were already being deducted from my available minutes. that's all i should have to pay.
i don't think that's so outrageous.
i did unlock my phone with the xda dev build, then went back to the same tmobile windows mobile 2003 build. i wasn't sure if the xda "stays unlocked" once you unlock it and then put a new rom on, but it does.
now i have an at&t sim, and it works well enough, but the sort-of-funny thing is that you apparantly can NOT just call your own isp with at&t.
i can't seem to get a connection to work. so i don't know. maybe i will stay with at&t since they, according to their sales literature anyway, have a data network that's like 3 times faster than t-mobile's data network.
of course it's more $ for them.
whatever the case, i have 30 days to try at&t with no obligation, cancel any time, owe them nothing. everyone has that option right now, in fact, due to the new ftc "local number port" thing happening.
i'll let ya'll know how it goes if i stick with at&t. i can always stay with t-mobile, but i'm not sure if that's a good idea.
Re: thanks

Sounds like you're talking about the EDGE service. Yeah, like 4 times the cost of T-Mobile's unlimited plan. I think I'll stick to the cheaper slower service.

Owe them nothing?! You might want to read that literature again. You'll not pay a cancellation fee nor an activation fee, but you will owe them for the prorated amount of time you had service, and any other additional fees that you use. This is pretty standard in the wireless industry. So if you go over your prorated minutes for the month, you owe them airtime charges. Happened to me, so just be careful.
bye bye at&t
hi arkhangel:
yes, you are correct:
4. Every new customer gets a 30 day risk free trial. When you purchase a phone and activate service at an AT&T Wireless store or at attwireless.com, you can return your undamaged phone for a refund within the first 30 days and pay only for airtime and usage charges. It’s just one more way we can earn your trust.
so it is not without charge, and thank god i only made one 6-minute call.
as far as the EDGE network goes, it was so-so...i only viewed 2 webpages with it, they loaded pretty much as quickly as with any other data service over the xda...and the funny thing is that it consumed apparantly almost 2 mb to do so.
i am pretty frustrated now, the at&t customer service has been pretty rotten, but t-mobile isn't too great either.
i'm calling verizon next, to compare...

The phone is programmed to send an SMS to T-Mobile every time you reboot your PPCPE. These show up as e-notes to 500 just as you describe. Compare the timing of your email use vs. the timing of your reboots and see where the e-notes are coming from. I think you can purchase a bundle of a bunch (500?) of SMS messages (aka e-notes) for something like $2.99, so you could cap your cost that way.
You should also be aware that T-Mobile has gone to a flat rate for GPRS at $19.95 for unlimited internet. The comparable plan with AT&T is something like $80.

Dealing with TMO

I'm coming off the HD2 which other than WM never had a problem with, it was fully rooted running the latest Android builds.
I got the Amaze over the weekend and switched sims. I don't live in a particularly good area for tmo coverage so fired up the wifi and everything seemed good till I'm at work on Monday, no 4g or any data coverage. Called Tmo, incredibly frustrating experience dealing with their automated attendant, here's a tip, just keep telling it you want to UPGRADE, once it thinks you want to spend money it will pop you to a rep. So the rep tells me I need the new sim, ok, it's at home so when I get back pop that in, call 611, 15 minutes of dealing with the auto attendant, multiple I'm hanging ups until I say that magic word "upgrade". Get the sim activated, wait overnight, no data connection. Call 611 again, "upgrade" ok right over to a rep who tells me I also need a new data plan for $30 which is $6 more than I pay now, so OK what are you going to do the phone doesn't work as is, upgraded to the new data plan and now it does.
Arghh, hope this helps.
If you just say 'Cancel', the automated system will get you over to Customer Loyalty. They are the best group to deal with as they have access to everything and can make deals on phones, etc.
Is there a corporate store near you? I highly suggest you go to the store and try to find someone to speak to in person about your issues. They will resolve them. They can't cancel in the store, but they'd be more than happy to assist you.
I was wondering if T-mo offers employee discounts from other businesses. I have sprint now and will be leaving them soon and I work at Target so sprint gives me 20% off my monthly bill.

They do, but I don't know is they offer one for Target. They also offer AAA discounts.
Contact customer care and ask if Target has a discount available.
It's called MCSA and the reps have a list of all the corporate nodes available to customers. Often times your bill cycle will change to match those of the corporate node so that's something you have to bear in mind.
Had the same thing happen to all 3 HD2s that I upgrade from .. all running latest NAND androids
after the same frustration, it's an issue with the network,
finally I called like 4X
and one tech explained, it's going from HD2 (which is WM) to ANDROID (even though it had android on it) so we powered down the WEB(DATA) on my plan, "changed it over", powered down my phone and turned it back on and DATA is working fine since then,
MIND you, it was working fine day one, I also went to work, it was working fine(well i thought since I was online but with wifi) I didn't noticed until like 20 minutes into my drive I got no emails (I get emails from work like every 2mins)
thats when I started calling TMO
***update, (got 3 different contacts)
----on both had frustration, last one, I explained, switch over my web from WM to ANDROID, tech said uh ok, didnt even power down my phone 2 mins later , working fine, so in all took like 10 mins on phone if that and all because of the automated person
Thanks, guys I will have to call and find out. To me that's icing on the cake and not a deal breaker.
EDIT: It's 10% not much but anything is better than none.

[Q] GT10.1 as a phone

Hey guys, I know there are other threads like this in the 7 inch but "this may be crazy, so call me maybe." but all terrible pop culture jokes aside, I am planning on using a GT 10.1 as a phone. I current have a Droid Charge on Verizon, which I am fond of, but I am always looking for something new/different.
My plan is to save lots of money by doing this, be quite unique, and functional.
Yesterday I purchased a GT10.1 with service capabilities (Is that the 10.1v?) and it should be here next week. And no I did not pay $800 from Verizon. Also, my main reason for this is I'm that weird person that doesn't like their phone in their pocket. I am always checking for it because I can't feel it. With this, I will always have it in my hand or somewhere close. *NOTE* I'm not attached to it, I just like to know where it is at all times.
I was mainly posting to see if anyone has done this with the 10.1 and any problems they ran across, or tips, tricks, anything to help me out on this transition. I will be dropping my unlimited plan to save money, and getting a 1 or 2GB plan, seeing as I am on WiFi 99% of the time being at a college campus.
If anyone has other program suggestions than the following, please step in. That is why i'm posting! If all possible I would like to keep my phone number, I'm not sure if that is possible due to me switching contracts and not having a mobile plan.
As of now, I plan on doing the following:
Galaxy Tab 10.1 16GB
-Caller: GrooveIP (Uses Google Voice) (Or should I use something along the lines of skype?)
-Messenger: N/A (Need one, Not sure what yet)
-3G/4G card from my Charge
I will root and theme etc, that's a given!
I know this is a giant wall of text, I tried to break it up a bit, but thanks for reading and I hope I get some good feedback and helpful tips.
I do something similar but not on the tab. I have an unlocked galaxy nexus gsm phone, no contract needed. I use tmobile prepaid, $30 per month for 5gb, at 4g (hspa) speed, then unlimited throttled. But it comes with only 100 minutes per month, so must be supplemented with calls over data. I have used grooveip and talkatone. The free talkatone app seemed to be about the same quality as grooveip. The monthly $2 high quality talkatone may be a little better. The quality of Skype is much much better than both, and since most everyone I talk to have Skype I just use that for free. But if you get a google voice number, you can use grooveip or talkatone as a phone too. Google voice will also work for sms. I only use that app, never the phone messenger app, I like it so much. No mms though. Also keep in mind data speeds matter. With 4g speeds you are ok. May have trouble in a moving car, I'm not a big talker so I haven't really noticed. At 3g speeds it will probably still work but quality will be worse. No way to use it if you drop to edge. So this is what I do on the phone. If I need data on the tab, I turn on the wifi widget in the nexus phone and voila I have data on my wifi tab. No expensive tablet/contract, no expensive monthly bills, $30/ month gets me what I need. You do have to pay a premium to escape the carrier contract, but think how fast you make back the extra cost of the phone. The galaxy nexus with jelly bean is only $350 in the google play store, not a bad deal at all.
Thanks a ton Kisrita, I bought my GT10.1v for $350, which seemed like a pretty good deal. And TMobile in our area does not have 4g, and what little service they have, sucks. And that helps me out a lot, I'd like to use skype a lot, but the hassle of this day and age at least for my generation, is not a lot of people USE the Skype on their phone. They have it, but they don't have it open to be "online" everyone just texts via messenger, so in theory, to communicate, I also have to be on a "Messenger" but knowing that GV can work for SMS is a good thing.
Sorry, nevermind, didn't read carefully enough.
All is good. Thanks for the free bump atleast!
Well, My tablet gets here today. Still looking for some answers!
I don't know if you knew this, but the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (GT-P51xx) works as a phone and for SMS.
www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab2/10.1/mobile/index.html?type=find
However, if you must go with the 10.1v, you have the option of doing the SMS mod on it and using Whatsapp as a primary messenger. It's fairly popular and a lot of people have it. For phone calls, I believe work is on to enable phone calls, and it may be possible some time in the very near future. Until then, you could always use Skype with a Skype paid number for incoming and outgoing calls through 3G/4G. Google Voice also has some interesting similar options.
Sent from my GT-P5100 using xda premium
No SIM card?
I'm not sure if this applies. Have 10.1, but it has no visible SIM or SDCard setup. Would like to see if some kinda way to run my T Mobile service through it. Is this possible if I can't put in a sim card?

I'm officially a Project Fi User!

Day 2 and amazing so far. Left VZ to stop wasting money on none used data.
Took 5 days to get the invite. Transferring my number went flawlessly and crazy fast. Up and running in under 15 minutes.
Nexus 6P and project fi. I guess I'm all googled up!

I activated today too also leaving verizon. I however have to wait a day or 2 for the number transfer to happen. Did you by chance give them the pin upfront. Because I did not know mine was my social until today when I entered it and it accepted it. Just wondering if that made it instantly activate for you.
It is amazing

That's correct, I entered my VZ account info right after the invite request. When I got the SIM card, all information was pre populated, I hit activate and literary like 2 minutes and I get notification that transfer is complete and survive fully active!
Maybe I should do some more research, but what's so good about project fi? Seems extremely expensive, and limited data plans...

Well.. I guess it all depends on your usage. For me.. I was paying around $120 on T-Mobile for unlimited, just jumped to att unlimited and will pay around $100 after discounts... Which, yes, I could spend less on project Fi.. However, if I use more than 10gb/ month, which I often do, then I'm gonna spend just as much or more.
I should have clarified and said for data hungry users, it seems expensive.

I will be switching from Fi to T-Mobile soon..I've had Fi for about 4 months now..I hate the idea of being data conscious.. I work from a van all the time so I rarely have WiFi..and I don't touch my phone because I hate the idea of opening xda developers and spending money on data that I could have saved if I didn't open it..so..yeah. Plus I get random beeps during phone calls which is a confirmed google issue that has been going on with Google voice for years..plus sometimes I have lte and nothing will load..all of that together makes me not want to deal with it anymore unfortunately..

My whole data usage for a month on Verizon is consistently under 1gb. I don't go out of my way to conserve data. I do however have cable internet and a router at home. So for people not using their mobile data as their only internet connection, project fi will be considerably cheaper. So far in my city I have better LTE coverage. This is day one though, but I get the filling coverage is going to be equal if not better.
Service is never indicative until after the fourteen day nevertheless that was hoopla. The reality is if you use 2GB or less of data each month now then Fi is for you

I should have clarified and said for data hungry users, it seems expensive.

Doesn't at&t throttle you after you use a certain amount though?
It's good, can be buggy on custom roms. Expensive for high data use.

I used Fi for almost a month before I cancelled. I was on UDP with VZW but got kicked off, my own dumb fault. Fi generally worked well for me, I had to switch my mindset. When I had UDP I never used WiFi ... ever and used my phone to tether when traveling. I had issues with Fi in two spots, one was in the middle of the woods, no surprise there, but VZW worked fine and the other was in Tampa on NYE, my signal indicated good but messages wouldn't send. since I am moving to Tampa in a few months I decided to abandon the Fi for now. I also want to better track my data usage on my VZW family plan for a few months to get a real indication of what I use, which I surmise to be 2-4Gb a month without seeking WiFi out and using WiFi at home. Fi seemed to rarely connect to WiFi automatically, something I expected to happen all the time. I also believe my battery life suffered a bit from the constant network switches and WiFi jumps.
Would I try it again, almost certainly. If you have a Unlimited plan and use it then Fi isn't right for you and Google even says that. If you are in a city, home, or office that has WiFi and you don't use a ton of data Fi is worth a shot. I ported my Google Voice number over and then back without issue.
Fi is expensive. $70 for 5Gb? It is $65 for 6Gb from T-Mobile plus binge for music and video streaming.
I am still on the $30 5GB plan from T-Mobile with binge on.
For $75 Fi plan, I better be on AT&T or Verizon network, not on the inferior TM or Sprint with some sort of streaming service.
I am disappointed by Fi. I was expecting google to have some sort of best in class hotspot network with cellular to fill in the gaps. Except TM and Sprint have best in class worst coverage outside of major urban areas, makes little sense. I thought Google was going to leverage google fibre network.
I already pay for xfinity and have access to xfinity hotspot frequently enough. So google fi makes no sense to me.

I just ordered a Fi sim card. Currently I'm on Straight Talk, an AT&T MVNO paying ~$48 for up to 5gb data then throttled after that. I don't think I even use 1-2gb a month because I'm always either at home or on campus with a great Wi-Fi signal. I can only see this as being an issue if I'm streaming Pandora or something via Bluetooth to my car. I'm hopeful.

Day 2 and amazing so far. Left VZ to stop wasting money on none used data.
Took 5 days to get the invite. Transferring my number went flawlessly and crazy fast. Up and running in under 15 minutes.
Nexus 6P and project fi. I guess I'm all googled up!

Welcomw to Project Fi!
I have been with Fi since November 2015 and I love it! The coverage is great in my area (Seattle, WA). Band 12 is great and now I have LTE where I didn’t have before with just T-Mobile. And for me the best part is that I only pay for the data that I actually used.
You may want to join the Project Fi Community in Google+. it's invite only and vary helpful.
You may also want to check out this app, for me, its a must have app for Fi user. :cyclops:

I just activated Fi myself. Coming from Sprint using a flip phone.
Fi seemed perfect for my set up since I work from home. It's actually why I was reluctant to switch to a smart phone, since I don't really need one at home and my wife has one for when we're out. But Fi was the same cost for phone service as the family plan I was on (with my parents) and then whatever data I use, which can't be much.

I can't tell the difference in network performance and I switched from Verizon. I agree they need to offer more data for less but at least you get money back for what you don't use. Even if I got on 4gb a month it would still be cheaper than my Verizon family plan. I barely use 1 gig a month though. I did read a rumor that if Fi takes off they will start offering more pricing flexibility and family plans. It is probably more rumor than fact though. But I assume they have a plan.
I was interested in Fi and their financing plan for Nexus phones, but I don't want to give up unlimited music streaming on T-Mobile. Plus, I pay $30 a month for Unlimited Talk & Text with 10GB of data. At $30 a month on Fi, you get all that but only start at 1GB of data which isn't enough for me.
I paid $26 last month for my FI plan.
I have WiFi at work for 9 hours a day, 15 minute drive each way to work, where I hop on xfiniti WiFi 4 or 6 times, then home on WiFi.
Now it's more of a game to see how little data I can use and make use of all the free WiFi around me.
If I were driving to my previous job at 65 miles each way streaming Netflix, yeah, I probably wouldn't be on fi.
But even if I pay $70 for 5 gb of data, next month if I only use 1gb it's $30 not $70.
No one else credits you back when you don't use data.

Using Verizon on overseas cruise?

I am a rooted Verizon vs996 user (also use the us998 twrp rom as well (currently on vs996). My wife and I are going for a 2-3 week cruise next week around the British Isles. I am wondering how people use their Verizon LG v30 overseas so as not to incur huge phone/data minutes and bills?
A couple of suggestions are to buy a pre paid sim card once we have arrived or I also know that Verizon offers different plans, but they seem quite expensive ($10.00 per day per phone as an example?). Not sure of the pricing on pre paid sim card. Other ideas? (remembering we each have a phone +my wife's new apple iPad).
Or plan is not to use the phone for a lot of calls or emails, but to be able to periodically check emails and texts from family mostly and I have to be able to surf the internet (read xda[emoji3]).
I have the rooted LG v30 and my wife has an iPhone.
Any suggestions, recommendations or advice?
Thx

As I recall, VZ offers international roaming, and IIRC it wasn't that badly priced, so you may want to look into that: https://www.verizonwireless.com/solutions-and-services/international-travel/
Of course, local SIM-carding is certainly going to be lower cost, if you can figure it out. I think it just involves plugging in a local SIM and off you go? But I'm not sure as I've never done it.
When we went to Jamaica, I simply disconnected the cell radio, and relied on wifi for everything. That worked fine for us (I try to remain disconnected on vacation anyway)... and if I had to make a call, I used Wifi and Google Hangouts Dialer to make the call at no cost. Sounds like this may work for you, overall, since you're only planning to use email/text anyway. Note, I used Hangouts for texting as well, since it worked on Wifi too. I believe the new Google Messages will do that now, as well, so you may be able to just use that (makes it easier than explaining to people why you have two phone numbers).
