Got Ethernet to work with Nexus 6P - Nexus 6P General

No one has posted how to get hardwired internet yet, so I thought I'd post this.
I bought the following from Best Buy today:
j5create - Type-C to USB 3.0 Adapter
j5create - USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet
Works great. Previous devices I had to turn off wifi and mobile date for it to work. Not with the 6P running Marshmallow.

Are you able to tether by connecting the ethernet cable to your router via the WAN port, or is it only for network access on the phone?

Cat5 to my work server and then to internet via Comcast router/modem. Also, works at home via cat5 to my gigE switch, then to Comcast router/modem.
I have not tried connecting to other devices on local network.
Does that answer your question?

I'm wondering if you can use your phone as the internet connection, but instead of using USB/WiFi/BT to share your phone's internet with other devices, if you can connect your phone to your router via ethernet and then have the devices in your home attached to that router for internet.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Not sure if you can share your mobile data through your home router. I'd have to play with that.
On the flip side, I just plugged my ethernet cable into my 6P. I activated the wifi hotspot on the 6P and the hotspot SSID shows up on my deskmates phone. He connected and was able to surf the net.

How much throughput are you getting via usb to ethernet adapter?

Is gigabit ethernet faster than USB 3.0 for transfer speeds? Could you tether your phone directly to you PC and transfer files between them with the ethernet cable?

USB 3.0 can handle upwards of 5Gbps, compared to 1Gbps of traditional network equipment. However the 6P only supports USB 2.0, but since the ethernet cable is attached via the USB port it's the lesser of the two that determines throughput.

Internet connection with ethernet?
So, do you connect the USB adapter to the RJ45 adapter, the network wire from modem to the adapter and the usb c to your cellphone right? Were you able to surf the net on the Nexus 6p or do you need to download any app to make it works?

Copying a file to the 6P over USB I get around 28 MB/s which is fairly close to the real-world maximum for USB 2.0. I get around 8 MB/s transfering over wifi which is disappointing since I have an 802.11ac "Nighthawk" Router which manages around 26 MB/S when transferring to my laptop over the same wifi. Connecting to a wired ethernet adapter would be useful for doing direct network file copies without using my laptop as an intermediary even if it's "only" 28 MB/s

Here's a good thread in this general section. It seems the best our 6P can do is USB 2.0.

Just copy a big file from the local network to your phone via any file browser. ES file browse is the one I use, it will also provide you with MB/s transfer rate.
Conversely, you can also see it in windows (perfmon) or on the router, if it has a bandwidth indicator.

Okay, I did some performance testing and I was unpleasantly surprised. The Wifi performed the best! Verizon wireless the worst (no surprise). Ethernet connected directly to the Comcast router performed slightly better going through my 48 port switch. Both ethernet tests were much slower than wifi.

Fantastic! Whilst transferring on wifi, what was your source of the file: Computer on LAN, USB plugged into the router, or something else? Secondly, what kind of wifi was it AC or N, 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz? Lastly, was it a samba lan share or FTP?
I get about 19MB/s or 152Mb/s down on 802.11AC 5Ghz from a 3.0 USB flash drive plugged into the router (Netgear R7000 DD-WRT) via FTP. Samba LAN share adds quite a bit of overhead. The Nexus 6P has a 2x2 antenna so it connects at ~866mbps I think.
Transfer rate via wifi when source is on LAN, I get about 8-10MB/s down via FTP.

Can Android phone become Wireless Ethernet AP?

Hi,
I have a TV Box that requires ethernet connection, located where there's no ethernet socket around.
Initially, I thought of buying a wireless ethernet dongle (such as this www. amazon. com/dp/B005OIB714/ref=asc_df_B005OIB7142059191?smid=A3U3JJYGD7YYL1&tag=nextagusmp0359831-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395105&creativeASIN=B005OIB714 ) which connects to the internet via wifi, and provides an ethernet male cable to stick into the TV box.
But here's a thought - would it be possible to use my SGS2 instead? Can it be used as a Wifi client, and is there a micro B to ethernet-male adapter or cable?
Tried googling for a while but got flooded with too much confusing data.
Thanks!
Your phone can be a wireless hotspot, if that what you want.

I don't think that's what he's asking. Sounds like he wants to connect the phone to wifi, then use some kind of adapter to piggyback the network connection out to an RJ45 wired port to the other device.

Dude, that thing is only $25. Just get it. I don't think what you are attempting will work, and even if it would, it would (theoretically) require an additional adapter for micro usb to rj 45 anyways, which would cost some amount of money, thus defeating what appears to be your purpose of saving money.
THANKS!
Yep -what I wanted was to use the SGS2 instead of a WiFi2Ethernet dongle.
I sometimes enjoy extending the use of the phone (such as using the SGS2 while on vacation in Ireland, to transfer files from my camcorder to an HDD via an OTG cable and a powered USB hub). However - in this case all I wanted was to save buying the dongle as I will rarely use it.
Too expensive, too complicated - Got it! thanks! Will buy a dongle.
If you really like recycling devices and have an old router lying around, you could try setting up a wireless bridge rather than getting a dongle.

Working Gigabit Ethernet USB Adapter

Bought two of these from amazon and they arrived today. Hooked up to both of my nexus players and it was totally plug and play. Not even a reboot required. This made my WMC recordings work in Plex whereas before they would never play. Also live tv in xbmc no longer buffers every few seconds.

Glad this worked but $25 purchase on top of a deivce that is already $99? what kind of router are you runnnig? why dont you use wireless n on 5ghz? would love to see a wan speed test from this adapter compared to wireless ac.
picked up a ea9200 (ac3200) tri band router just for the two nexus players (had a wrt1900) and dont foresee any need to go wired.
Related question: Is the USB port USB 3? It can't take full advantage of the adapter if not. Even 100mbit would struggle (even though USB 2.0 is rated 480 mbit, it's half duplex and the speed will drop substantially if there's any bidirectional communication).
I haven't had any problems on wireless, but having a wired option is useful if I need it down the road.

I have 2 ubiquiti APs in a mesh configuration they run 5ghz N but while its enough to stream most content it was not enough to stream live tv from win media center with hdhomerun tuners to xbmc, nor could it sustain streams of recorded tv shows from win media center via plex. I could upgrade to AC or add an AC wap to my mesh but that's more $. Aside from this small issue everything else in my house is perfect on wifi. It doesn't make sense to rip and replace my wifi network. A $25 adapter is the cheaper route and everything streams perfectly now.

That adapter uses the ASIX AX88178 Chipset. There is a USB 3.0 adapter that uses the ASIX AX88179 chipset:
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00KZGHTRQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1K7RYQVZ52FF1
so I'm wondering if that'd work with the NP. I realize you can't get more than 480mbps over a USB 2.0 port, however I'd rather have a USB 3.0 adapter for future use somewhere else if needed instead of being hobbled by a a USB 2.0 gigabit adapter.
Has anyone tried a USB 3.0 ethernet adapter of any kind on their NP yet?
Thanks.
Most, if not all, gigabit adapters would likely be USB 3. It's possible to get good streaming over USB 2 as it's primarily going to be a unidirectional communication, particularly on a purpose built device not really doing much else with the connection. It should be doing a good amount of buffering to compensate for the half duplex issue. USB 3 devices should have no problem working on a USB 2 port.

On a PC they'd reach higher speeds than 10/100 adapters but would, of course, top out at 480mbps theoretical max instead of full gigabit. I know in most computers any USB 3.0 device works fine in a USB 2.0 port, however I'm gun-shy when it comes to android considering its support track record on other devices.
If anyone has any direct experience with USB 3.0 adapters working fine on android (Nexus 7, 10, etc) I'd love to still know.

Sorry to hear that, it is a bummer. What model did you get and do you know the maker or model # of it's chipset? I ordered a usb 3 adapter with an Asix AX88179 chipset that should arrive by Tues. I know that Asix has provided Google with the drivers for all their chipsets and those drivers have been included in Android since 4.2. Its been confirmed that the Asix AX88178 chipset in their usb 2.0 version works fine with the NPlayer. I wonder if the adapter you picked up has an Asix chipset?

For anyone curious: the NP also works with the official nintendo wii lan adapter.
I had one from my old wii and it worked without any changes needed.
Wikipedia states it uses an ASIX chip, but I cant seem to find info on which exact model.

Thanks for the tip, I did the same, totally worked, fixed all the spottiness from the NP wifi adaptor (never saw my N network so was stuck with low bandwidth and app crashes).
I picked up a micro usb extension to move the whole mess of cables around the back of the TV, its such a shame they didn't include ethernet, the FireTV works perfectly with ethernet, but the NP has a far better UI.

What Mbps are you getting out of this adapter? I got the BobjGear USB to RJ45 Compact Fast Ethernet Adapter made for Android Tablets and i am only getting like 5 - 7 Mbps (via speedtest). This is unfortunatly not enough to run 1080p MKV's through Kodi.

Getting more than 10mbps via ethernet on NP

I bought a cheap straight-connector OTG cable from Amazon and when I hook up my USB ethernet adapter I only get 10mbps. The adapter is definitely a 10/100 adapter, but I am not sure if it is the OTG cable or the adapter causing the problems. I am inclined to believe it is the OTG cable since the ethernet drivers are pretty standard. If you have a OTG + ethernet adapter getting 100mbps, do you mind posting what you have? Currently my wirelss AC outperforms ethernet because of this handshake issue.
Are you referring to a measured 10mbps or indicated 10mbps connection (adapter lights)? If you are getting a 100mbps connection but only seeing 10mbps throughput, it is likely because of the USB connection as it is only USB 2.0. Yes, USB 2.0 is capable of 480mbps, but it is half duplex and any communication opposing the throughput will sink the performance drastically. If you are only getting a 10mbps connection to your switch, then it is likely the adapter at fault.
There are other threads discussing connecting USB ethernet to this device with indication that it is capable of even achieving 1gbps switch connections. I would be surprised if you can get actual high performance of bidirectional communication on the USB port though. Many have indicated it is good enough for HD streaming.
The Player has 802.11ac 2x2 MIMO wireless. It can connect to 802.11n routers in MIMO providing up to 300mbps, or up to 150mbps single channel. 802.11ac is capable of 500mbps single channel and up to 1gbps in certain configurations. Personally, I'm confused why someone would want a USB 2.0 ethernet connection over this.
10mbps measured. No other devices connected simultaneously so duplexing doesn't factor in. Wireless AC works well, but Ethernet is still better. I'll take 100mbps Ethernet over wireless AC any day.
Sent via Tapatalk on the Oneplus One
Plexing has to do with direction of communication and channeling, not number of connected devices. A single connected device can suffer from half duplex issues. As you are attempting network communication, most likely over a TCP session, you have communication going in both directions even when you are doing a speed test one direction at a time. ACK packets go the opposite direction of the flow of packets being streamed. In order for that to work, an interrupt on the bus has to be requested and granted, locking out other communication.
Sysadmins will know the pain of half duplex ethernet communication, whether because they dealt with older technologies, or because they ran into a system that did not properly negotiate an ethernet connection and fell back to half duplex on the ethernet connection itself. USB, up to 2.0, will exhibit the same problem, which is why I find USB 2.0 gigabit adapters a bit strange to exist at all.
I might do some performance testing of 802.11n vs 100mbit USB 2.0 ethernet. I have some nice Cisco USB 2.0 adapters to compare with. I've actually done some crazy networking hacks with these USB adapters in the past and know they perform pretty well.

[Working] Inateck HB4003 Gigabit Ethernet & 3 Port USB 3.0 Hub

I have been getting exceedingly frustrated with the lack of wi-fi stability for video streams and the lack of compatible remotes that work with the Nexus Player.
Pros
Gigabit Ethernet (I know it is only capable of USB 2.0 but streams feel more stable than with the built-in wi-fi)
3 Port USB Hub (I have 2 devices plugged up through the port right now)
Relatively affordable price compared to a standalone USB ethernet unit
Cons
Constructed of hard plastic (would be nice to be built out of metal or something else like the HooToo model)
The first unit I gave a try was the HooToo HT-UE02. No matter what I did, it wouldn't pick up the ethernet; however the USB hub did work. I finally gave up, returned the HooToo unit, and ordered the Inateck HB4003. When It came in, I plugged it up & it immediately worked! I didn't even have to reboot. It automatically switched to the ethernet connection. So far, video streams seem much more solid than with the built-in wi-fi unit. When i get some time, I will run a speedtest.
On a side note. If anyone was curious if the SMK-Link PS3 Blu-Link Universal Remote Control would work with the Nexus Player, it doesn't. I ordered the Logitech Harmony Smart Control. Hopefully it will reduce the number of remotes I have lying around.

I have added ethernet speed test screenshots for your reference.
Nice. Gonna order it.
Okay, now does anyone know there's one that's similar to this that has external power input?
Because this now exists https://plus.google.com/+DeesTroy/posts/F93xFzFYhff
4GB of user accessible storage on the #NexusPlayer is a bit small, especially in 2015. Tonight I attached an "old" 64GB SSD via USB OTG and repacked the boot image to use the SSD for the userdata partition. Now I have 59GB of relatively speedy storage.
You can find the repacked boot image at the link below. Personally I am user a powered USB adapter so as not to overload the USB OTG port. You will need to make sure that there is only one partition on the drive or that the partition you intend to use for data is the first partition. It will need to be formatted as ext4.

I purchased mine and seem to be getting really fast speeds....any idea why? Everyone else seems to be right around 100...even on the other usb ethernet adapters.

It could easily be my setup. It could be: 1) USB extension cable from China (length, quality, or potentially being USB 1); 2) My HooToo USB Hub/OTG adapter.
Does casting work with this wired Ethernet port? I once read that casting doesn't work on non-wifi connections, but never had the hardware to test.
Thanks in advance!

Works for me as well. It seems a bit more stable than through wi-fi only ironically.
If you reboot the Nexus Player, does the USB/ethernet connection stay connected? I have a different brand usb/ethernet connector and if I reboot the nexus, it doesn't automatically reconnect to my network. I have to go into the network settings and change the ethernet connection from DHCP to static (and enter all of the network settings). That doesn't fix the problem, but then when I switch back to DHCP it instantly connects and everything's fine until I reboot again. It's not a big problem because I don't restart the NP very often, but it's still annoying.

Yes, mine always reconnects. I don't have to do anything special. I know the Nexus Player is really finicky about which units it likes to work with. I had to return my first one from a different brand.
I found a workaround. There were two issue - first, with DHCP selected the ethernet would not connect until I tried a static connection and then went back to re-select DHCP. I don't think this has been resolved.
But... the other issue was that I wasn't able to get a working connection after manually putting in the static ip settings. When I went through the Static IP wizard I wasn't putting in DNS servers (assuming that they would be auto-retrieved like nearly other device does). The Static IP wizard was finishing successfully without the DNS servers populated. But apparently DNS servers are required when you use the Static IP wizard because now the connection works and survives reboots.

For the Inateck adapter or in general?
I guess for the inateck....since it was stated that the 3port ethernet definitely works ...I would suppose to get an otg that's works in tandem. ..bc it's quite tight back there with hdmi and power and then micro. ...

I actually just use mine with HooToo (HT-CT01). Its an OTG adapter with 4 extra USB charging ports (they only work for charging). to make the cable longer, I use this adapter with a USB extension cable. I would think if you have an regular OTG cable, you should be able to connect it to a USB extension cable to make it longer.

Connecting to Gigabit Ethernet speeds?

Hi, I purchased a Cable Matters USB 3.1 Ethernet adapter under the impression I would receive gigabit speeds. I am getting 80mbs directly connected to my cable modem (mb8600) and for some reason 350ish when directly connected to my router (ac5400). I can get 300mbs off of wifi, so is this all we can expect from ethernet? I get between 800-900 over a wired connection on multiple laptops. I have hit almost 600mbs before over wifi on the G5 (7.0), so I was expecting at least that much.
I spoke to Cable Matters who confirmed the device is compatible with the G5 and that if my network was capable I should recieve gigabit speeds. I don't understand why out of my modem I can only reach 80mbs. Anyone know a better way or product?

Yes, at least the cable matters device specifically does work with the G5. There seem to be others as well if you read the Amazon reviews.

Hi does the ethernet connection happen with plugging in the adapter or do you have to change any settings on the G5?
Also does your adapter have the Asix chipset? Thanks.
