Galaxy s3 sudden death - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my galaxy s3 suddenly stopped working and when I tried to boot it up it goes to the Samsung splash screen and then to the galaxy s3 splash screen. After reaching that screen it crashes. When I attempted to boot into recovery it shows SE linux enforcing in the corner in blue and then crashes. When booting into download mode it lasts a bit longer but still eventually crashes. After doing a bit of research I noticed that people were having that problem with faulty power switches. I disassembled my phone and uninstalled the power switch sadly the phone still was stuck i n its boot cycle implying that it is a deeper issue then that. Thanks ahead of time for any help!

Will odin see the phone in download mode, will it stay on long enough to flash a rom via odin, roughly 5 minutes?.
I wish I stole my HTC M9.

Sadly shivadow the micro usb port on the phone is damaged making anything like that impossible (I've been using a external battery charger ). Also the phone absolutly ****s itself as soon as input is registered.

Then I'm afraid its whats scientifically known as "f**ked".
I wouldn't waste money on having it fixed as it'll probably need a new motherboard. Time to upgrade to that phone you always wanted..

[Q] Black Screen Brick Vibrant

Hello,
Don't know if this has been asked but I have been looking for it for a while. Cant seem to fine a solution.
I flashed my phone wrong with hemdall now my phone wont turn on. Screen completely black i reboot pulled out the battery everything I can think of can you give me a suggestion. I was thinking about buying a USB Jig.
I'm in the same boat and I bought the Jig. However I think Josh just acts as a middle man on this one and shipping is actually from overseas. But you can find it here. http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-download-mode-jig/ I suggest a little extra shipping cost.
However the other suggestion if that is not working (I think I killed my phone) is to have Josh do a Jtag on the phone. You can find that at http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-vibrant-jtag-brick-repair/
Can you get into download mode? Remove battery, plug usb, press up+down vol buttons and insert battery.
hey i having same problem but i could see the vibrant samsung screen but my phone won't pass that and like you say about the usb cable and then plugging the battery i can do that as well but how can i get my phone back and running another rom!!!

If you can see the Vibrant Samsung screen just use Odin to flash back to stock

The real solution here i doing a JTAG to your phone or make the Unbrickable MOD (It's very dangerous, a person with Welding and electronic skills must do this).
Another thing you can do is buy a broken Screen phone from Ebay (it more cheaply) and change the motherboard!!
My suggestion would be to continue to try to get into Download mode on the phone. My phone was DEAD no life at all plugged into the wall or PC. I kept trying to get it into download mode and magically after hours of failures, ODIN recognized the device! The phone was still DEAD no life at all on the screen but ODIN had recognized that my device WAS indeed connected. So I continued to flash back to stock and as always with a little patience ODIN was there to save me. The phone automatically rebooted after ODIN was done and BOOM! Good2Go
Goodluck!
^^I'm gonna try that and hopefully with some patience it will work. Otherwise I'm also gonna be ordering a jig, they're not that expensive. My problem is the same as the OP's. My vibrant will just not give any signs of life. I was trying to odin to stock from one cosmics ics RC3.1. Wanted to start on a fresh install for AOKP build 25. But then odin decided to fail on modem.bin. then it just hung and phone turned off, haven't been able to turn it on since. I've spent the last two hours trying to put in different combinations and keys and usb attachments to bring any hints of life, but so far nothing. Bootloader update was not checked on odin so I'm pretty confident that its not due to bootloader mismatch but someone correct me if I'm wrong. Sending it back to samsung or tmobile is very far of an option since I've modified the phone to add FFC. If anyone has any advice or hints it would be greatly appreciated. I'm kind of hating myself and flashing now since I was very happy with the rom that I had and how everything was setup. I just wanted to try something new for fun and this went and blew everything up.
^^I literally held down the buttons > plugged in the cord > put in the battery > and counted in my head the amount of seconds it took the phone to "normally" boot to where I would "normally" let go of the power button to get into Download mode, lol I know it sounds ridiculous but that's how I did it. It helped that I had my sisters working Vibrant right there, I used her phone to get into download mode and timed the process and used that as a baseline for the timing of trying to get the "DEAD" Vibrant into download mode.
If all else fails a JTAG as mentioned should fix your problem fosho!
Goodluck!
Ye I fixed it. One day I did what I had been doing the whole time and it just decided to work. Got into download mode then went back to stock. Our phone is so freaking weird yet I love the damn thing. It really is unbrickable. To anyone in this situation just never give up.

[Q] A very unusual bootloop on i9100

Hey everybody,
Recently, I got a bricked Samsung Galaxy S2 (I9100 - International) from my brother. He told me that it suddenly began rebooting randomly, when writing SMS or browsing the web, and after some time, it could not boot into android OS (stock ICS). He has not flashed or did anything unusual to his phone, it seems that the phone bricked out of the blue.
As mentioned earlier, I cannot boot into android. The phone reboots itself as soon as Samsung Galaxy logo appears. On the other side, I can boot into the Odin-mode (Download-mode) and recovery. The weird thing is that I can only access recovery and Odin-mode when the phone is connected via USB.
Odin-mode works without a hitch. Although in the recovery mode, the phone reboots itself randomly (sometimes after 2 seconds or even 10 seconds). Therefore the only way, I can install or do something with my phone is via Odin.
I have tried replacing stock recovery (the one that comes with ICS) with CWM recovery (varying from v4 to v6) without any luck (CWM also rebooted randomly). Afterwards, I have tried following this guide "Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII":
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458
I have succesfully managed to carry out everything in this guide (first with "ICS version" and afterwards with "Gingerbread version"). But the problem remains unsolved. The phone still cannot manage to boot up before it restarts and recovery reboots randomly. Do you have any suggestions what to do (without throwing the phone out )?
Thanks in advance
Go to download mode and flash stock 4.1.2 from sammobile.

Thanks for your quick response . I tried it without any luck. I was thinking: Could a faulty battery be causing all this? (even though when connected to USB the symbol shows that it is 100 % full)
Does it work ok with charger plunged in? How old is the phone/battery

With the charger plugged in, I can only access Odin-mode and partially recovery mode (because the phone begins randomly to reboot). The phone cannot boot into the normal Android OS, since as mentioned earlier, it reboots as soon as Galaxy logo appears.
Without the charger plugged in, the phone is completely dead. I can then access neither Odin-mode nor Recovery.
The phone is app. 1 and a half year old, while the battery has been replaced by warranty about 6 months ago (The warranty has recently expired).
Can you get a battery with out buying one? Test it with new battery. Has it bin dropped or water damage?

The phone has some minor screen cracks on the side, but they appeared long time ago (almost just after my brother bought it) and the phone has fully functioned until a couple of weeks ago.
Talking of the battery, I could eventually try ordering a replacement battery from ebay. But I would only receive it in about 2 weeks.
Do you have any other tricks left up your sleeve? Or should I just go and order a new battery?
Can you flash in with odin? Thinking about it if it crashes half way thought then its definitely dead. Will it stay on if you put it in download mode or does it switch off

Its Definately a Hardware Problem
As You Said Captain :
Your Phone is-
1/2yrs old (Not Bad)
6 Months old Battery (Warranty)
Completely Dead without Charger (Not Sure About this... it can be a [Battery] or a [Mother Board] issue)
Screen Cracks (Signifies that the phone has been dropped several times and might have damaged the interior parts)
Boots again and again (Must be because the phone has lost some registry files for Boot or this might be a Hardware issue)
Cannot Boot into Android (Definately a Mother Board issue or can even be a fault in software)
If you take a look at all this... this is really very excessive. The phone is in a really bad taste (as all its hardware might be damaged inside) ... If you have tried everything at your level best to change the software, and it dint work. Then this is surely a Hardware problem. Check your Hardware, Mainly the Battery (Even if you got it 6 months before) & the Mother Board. You will definately find a problem in any of these Hardwares inside.
Regards

Well, I hope it is a minor problem or something with the battery, or else I would need to spend all my life savings in order to buy a new motherboard (It sucks to live on student grants)
Flash with odin. Keep trying if it holds power. May be a faulty recovery making it reboot.
Try changing Software Before doing any Hardware Changes

hmm... So i guess its better you first try changing the software (as download mode runs well). If everything you tried fails... Then you better change the Hardware (I recommend)

[Q] Samsung S2 stuck in boot loop, cannot access Recovery Mode.

Hey Guys, ive scoured google for 2 days now trying to find a way to fix my phone.
two days ago i was doing some work and i left my phone on the table, and later i found out that the battery was low and it had shut off. But when i looked at it, it was just flashing the "samsung galaxy s2 gt-i9100" text logo. (and not the animation circle logo.)
I tried turning it off, didnt work so i thought it had frozen which happens, so i took out the battery and put it back in again.
Then i tried to plug it into my recharger, and it was showing a grey battery icon and was frozen on that screen always, the screen doesnt turn off, the battery icon isn't showing that its charging. doesnt change, just shows the same empty battery grey icon with the refresh circle-arrow in the middle.
I tried taking the battery out leaving it out for 5 minutes, draining the battery from the phone by holding the power button for 10 seconds, then trying to charge the phone. Same issue, only showing the grey battery icon when trying to charge and it never changes or goes away.
SO i tried to boot up the phone, but it wont go past the samsung text logo.
I tried entering recovery, but it just freezes on the samsung text logo.
I can enter Odin download mode, and ive tried installing several different both stock, original and CMW roms, and nothing changes. (except if i use gingerbread, then the grey battery icon just keeps flashing off and on in 5 second intervals when plugged into the charger.)
Ive tried taking the battery out for 8 hours and try booting it, no change.
Ive tried changing the battery, no change (think it has low bat as well maybe).
Ive tried leaving it plugged in overnight, but that only drained whatever power i had left over in one of the batteries.
Ive tried some of the siyah and doriman kernels, and they add a loading bar which gets full on the samsung text screen,
but then freezes after that.
Im losing my mind here, ive tried almost everything i can think of. And would really appreciate any help on this.
UPDATE
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok so to keep this post updated for people experiencing the same issues.
IT seems there is a hardware failure in progress.
BUT i managed to get a temporary fix, it seems that by having the ear plugs connected into the earphone jack in the phone, the phone becomes somewhat usable. I was able to get into recovery, and able to flash a new stock, and its up and running, but as i said this is only a temporary solution as the real issue is that the phone is not conducting the electricity in a proper way that allowed me to recharge my batteries until i had added the earphones...
The phone becomes unusable for me when i remove the earphones again, as i believe its failing to conduct the electricity from the battery properly through the motherboard without something connected into the earphone jack..
SO for people having issues with their phones, it might be a possible way to get your phone temporarily operational again.

Search for Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread, download the 3 part stock firmware linked in the thread, flash it with Odin (only if you absolutely have an I9100/I9100T though).
Edit - Doesn't sound promising though, cross your fingers doing that works.
yeah i tried hoppers guide, didnt help me.
Still stuck on the samsung screen.
Whats wierd is, if ive got the phone on charging, it wont boot to the samsung screen even, it just turns itself off
and returns to the grey battery icon again.
Hang on....Did you try flashing the 3 part firmware like I mentioned ? If you haven't, do it. If you have, it's a service centre/local mobile repair shop job.

Yeah, tried 3 part, even another packages with pit files bootloader and repartitioning from another guide.
still no change, still freezes at samsung text screen.
I dont want to take it to a service center, as there is none around here as far as i know. Norway.
If i can just get it into recovery mode i can prob fix it, but i cant fracking enter recovery. Its driving me insane.
Given what you've tried, no chance of fixing it yourself by the usual methods.
Either take it to a local mobile repair shop & ask them to source a 2nd hand motherboard for you & put it in, or you source one (from a 'donor' phone; a phone with a broken screen that is otherwise OK for example, search online) & either replace it yourself or pay the local mobile repair shop to do it if you're not confident enough.
have you ever flashed a rom on that before..... or is this a stock ROM phone we are talking about???
if it was a stock ROM phone....then did it receive updates over carrier network and started to install itself???
if yes then you should have not stopped it...... i have some problem with phone 3 days ago.... i downloaded latest XWMS1 released for nordic region....... phone is fixed and i am back to neatrom 5.3.1
i suggest you download XWMS1 ...and try flashing it via Odin..... might start......

It wasn't any update or anything, it was related to the battery i think as the batt was low.
And instead of recharging the battery, it went into bootloop and started draining the battery more when it was plugged into the charger.
ive downloaded xwms1, still stuck in bootloop.
Ive even opened it up to see if it was a hardware issue, i see no flaws, all buttons work and nothing is stuck.
the phone just keeps going to the samsung logo, and wont go into recovery mode.
It can easily go into download mode, but recovery mode is just not happening.
at this point i just ordered the Xperia Z1 instead, but i still want to fix this phone and give it to my dad or something.

errrrm - just a thought (and it's a real long shot) I had some strange battery drain (bootloop) issues with a brand new i9100 and it turned out that the micro sd card I was using was corrupt, took it out and it worked. Might be worth a try but like I said its a long shot. If that does not work I agree with mistahbungle and looks like you wil need to replace the mb.

I've went through this on my Hercules, T-Mobile S2. I had Android tweaker pro, removed all of the tweaks, and rebooted. It took me quite a while but I was able to get into recovery by the normal button mashing.
DO NOT HAVE THE PHONE PLUGGED INTO THE CHARGER.
PRESS THE VOLUME BUTTONS THEN THE POWER BUTTON WHILE STILL HOLDING THE VOLUME BUTTONS.
AS SOON AS YOU FEEL THE FIRST VIBRATION, LET GO OF ONLY THE POWER BUTTON!
CONTINUE TO HOLD THE VOLUME BUTTONS UNTIL YOUR RECOVERY LOADS.
THAT IS WHAT HAS WORKED FOR ME.

i kinda cloned my ROM , it happened by mistake while trying to flash my kernel , now that my phone is stuck in samsung start up logo , . tried to reboot still the same result. . . :crying:
No recovery ? If that's the case, stock rom from Samfirmware, flash with Odin to get a 'clean slate' (How ? Thread stickied near top of Q&A has instructions) & re-try whatever it was you wanted to do. If you do have recovery, try a factory reset in the first instance, if that doesn't work or if you have recovery but can't do one for whatever reason, proceed with the stock flash via Odin.
Thanks

A friend of mine had am Android phone that had a similar problem. It always showed the headphones on the status bar and Could not be heard. If you will take your phone apart then you can look for bridges in the solder points. These happen from poor construction and over heating. Fix the bridges and you should be good to go.

I did take it apart and had a quick look, all seems ok. However I was not ready to junk the phone so I improvised a little, its not pretty but it works.
I had an old headphone jack which I cut down so as it would just fit into the jack point, installed Soundabout Pro app which forces the calls to come out the earpiece and not headphones voila it works. In the end it cost me a lot of time surfing countless forums, anger management control and some joy at getting it to work. Still without the help people give on this and other forums it would be a useless phone :fingers-crossed:

[Q] Galaxy S III crashes, won't boot unless connected to power source

I took Verizon's NC1 OTA about two weeks ago. This weekend, Maps kept locking up, and now that has devolved into the whole phone suddenly dying. No power off animation, just the screen goes black and the phone is off. When I attempt to boot it back up, it'll do the same sudden death bit, sometimes without even making it through the Verizon boot animation. The battery had a strong charge the first time this happened - about 70%. It will fully boot if I connect it to a power source, but it will die again after some active use off the charger. As a result of this, I'm also unable to boot into recovery. I would ultimately love to flash some other ROM as I think I may have corrupted something when I took the OTA. Battery is new-ish (or, more likely, refurbished-ish) - replaced the phone via insurance back in December.
Some additional background: I had my phone rooted two OTA's ago. When I installed the second most recent OTA (I forget which, maybe MC1?), the phone obviously unrooted, but then I also got the "Samsung Custom" boot screen with the unlocked image, which I thought odd considering it was an official OTA.
In summary: I have a phone that is rather useless unless I'm perpetually near a power source. Has anyone had a similar experience, or does any one know what the heck I can do to fix this?
It's alive
So disregard the bulk of that post. Turns out the power problem was a bad battery. I popped in the battery from the old, smashed phone and it worked like a champ.
However, I'm still stuck with the problem of not being able to boot into recovery. I'll get the same Samsung logo with the unlocked logo and "custom" at the bottom, but then the screen will go black and nothing will happen until I let go of the key sequence, at which point it'll finally boot up normally. Thoughts?
Is your phone the i9300 model? If not then ask a moderator to move it to the correct forum for you.

S3 Reboot Issue

I'm afraid she's dead, Jim.
I've got the SCH 1535, Verizon version, 16 GB, and was running an older version of Cyanogenmod (10.something)
Phone when into the "Samsung display" loop last night. Removed the battery, and tried to boot into recovery mode.
Phone would vibrate when all three buttons were pushed... and then nothing. I'd hold it for several minutes, and it never kicked into the recovery mode.
When I'd release the buttons, it would vibrate and then reboot into the Samsung Display again.
On one occasion, it vibrated and flashed the Samsung logo and the blue text in the upper left corner- but then rebooted into the Samsung Display, where it stayed.
After a few hours, I then moved into trying to boot it into to Download mode. Same response... nada.
Now, it won't respond at all- won't power up, (seemingly) won't take a charge (plugged in, but no light indicated).... Bleh.
I've already ordered a replacement (was shopping for the N6P yesterday, maybe it knew?), but I'm just looking to see if there's a way to get into it long enough to grab some of my data that wasn't backed up or on my SD card.
Thoughts, oh wise Android wizards?
Its CM10.1 man. It might be that your s3 already got old and a part of its hardware suddenly fails (If you only installed CM10.1 and did not tweak the ROM after [i.e editing build.prop]). It's normally happening to a few I9300's everyday. It was yours that was chosen to be taken today.

Yup... good times.
What's interesting is that the computer "recognizes" it when it's plugged in (I get the comforting "ding" when it's connected), but other than that... nothing.
