I've successfully rooted my Fire HD6 on 4.5.3, but wasn't quick enough to disable auto updates.... Now the device is 70% through downloading 4.5.5.
How can I stop the download mid download, as I don't want to break the root. There isn't an option next to the update to stop or delete it. Thanks.
Turn off wifi..go to system/priv-app/devicesoftwareota rename devicesoftwareota.apk to devicesoftware.apk_
and reboot

Hi all,
I just got an S5 today and it has KitKat 4.4.2. I accidentally clicked on the "Software Update" button in the "Settings>About Device" page and it started downloading Lollipop OTA. I couldn't find any way to stop the download. I have no intention of upgrading to Lollipop any time soon, so now I'm stuck with nearly 1GB of wasted space and an annoying nag to update.
I've been looking through this forum and it seems like the only ways to get rid of the nag and clear out the downloaded update require a rooted device. I prefer not to root my device so I'm wondering if there's any way to get rid of the nag and the downloaded OTA update without rooting. Do I pretty much have to do a factory reset?
If factory reset is my only route, will the OTA update just get automatically pushed back out and downloaded to my phone in a few days or weeks? If so, there wouldn't seem to be much of a point in doing a factory reset if the update will just come back. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
John

In my case, disabling "Software updater" or something similar in Application Manager stopped the auto update (you can verify by tapping on "Software update" in settings again and nothing should happen).
Thanks for taking the time to respond. The post you linked was one of the articles that I looked at previously. The suggestions in the post seemed to only be applicable to rooted devices so I wasn't really able to use them. But thanks for linking it nonetheless.
In the Application Manager, I see two "System Update" applications. One can be turned off but other can't so I guess by default that that will be the one I'll stop. When I try to turn "Software Update" off, it gives me a nasty warning about stopping a system app and causing instability. Has turning off that application caused any instability on your device?
Also, all of these suggestions deal with how to prevent the OTA from downloading, but do you know of any way to get rid of the update and free up the space once it's already downloaded? I accidentally downloaded the OTA update and I'd like to remove it and have the phone not download it again. Will I have to do a master/factory reset in order to get rid of the update?
Thanks again for your help.
That nasty warning appears every time you try to disable ANY app, not just this one, and I've disabled a bunch of default bloatwares without any side effect. So you can just go ahead and disable it. As for the downloaded update, I would suggest using a file manager to list all files in the internal storage and sort by size, it would likely be the biggest file.
Thanks for the advice, Master 619. I tried using a file manager, as you suggested, but the file is not showing up. I'm pretty sure it's because my device isn't rooted and that file is in a protected area so I can't get to it. I'm figuring that I'm just going to have to do a master reset and then disable the "System Update" application.
I had my Kindle Fire HDX 7" rooted with towelroot, full google play store etc. Then Play store updated a little while ago and google stopped working. I decided to try to revert to stock fire os, so I did a full factory reset. I have since tried to update the Fire os from 13.3.2.6 to the latest - 13.4.5.3 but I get a parse error every time. I have downloaded the update both direct over wifi and also to my PC and then through USB - no difference. I suspect some remnants of the rooting process may be at fault, but I don't know where to look. The root folder is empty. Any help would be welcome, thanks.
I bought this off eBay thinking I could easily root this as I have many older Kindle Fires and then I found out it wasn't rootable so I put it in my desk for several months. Now I see there is some rooting going on and I was wondering what guide I need to use to do this one? Thanks in advance!
Anyone please?
Please help me with this paperweight ha ha
What OS is it running?
Fire OS 4.5.5
Here's the deal: Only 4.5.3 can be rooted. For OS > 4.5.3 you must be able to get OS 5, which allows adb sideload of 4.5.3. For OS 5 you must either sign up with Amazon for Developers Preview--which you can't do with blacklisted tablet--or get the OTA update to 5, which you would have gotten if wifi is on and Amazon updates blacklisted. If you haven't turned on wifi, do that and see if the new update downloads in the next week or so. If it does you can use either the newbie guide or "update to lollipop." If it doesn't you're unrootable.
It's been on for two days now and still not finding an update. Very frustrating.
Really, I'll be surprised if you get updated. Doubtful Amazon will update blacklisted. (You could always google to find out.) Maybe wait another week or two while update finishes rolling out. You can press the check for updates button in settings/device/system updates occasionally.
It checks for blacklisting before updating? I thought it only did that when trying to register it to your account.
So if I can't update it what can I do to this? Can I somehow put the Play Store on it without root so I can at least put some apps on it?
Hello..
I got a notification for updating my nexus 6 to andriod 6. I downloaded it but then it did not get installed, I don know what happened as the phone still shows 5.1.1 & it shows system is up to date. Please help. The build number is LMY48T. Do I need to wait for new update or do it manually? My download was interrupted due to a system shutdown.
To update manually, the bootloader needs to be unlocked.
I am having some issues with the G9 I am working with. I have root using the latest Magisk. But every time a "security update" installs and reboots the phone, I lose root. So I go back into fastboot and reflash the boot img. That solves the problem. But it is a minor nuisance I am trying to workaround. I have tried searching for days, trying to figure out how to STOP system updates. I installed a root service disabler and disabled a few different services.
I still cannot seem to figure out what service is downloading updates. I have already gone into Developer Options and disabled automatic updates. And there was an update waiting that I kept paused. Last night I got the popup reminding me about it. And it was supposed to "remind me later". But instead installed it in the middle of the night.
I could care less about opinions on whether or not to allow updates. I would just like to know what service or file I need to cripple to get it to stop. I want to decide if or when something runs on my phone. Any ideas? Android 9.
And you will lose root after update, it's normal

If you are using a G9, not a G9 Pro, could you please link me to the stuff to root it?
