One plus x heating issue - OnePlus X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my one plus x 2 days back and I love the phone. But I have some issues with heating. When I am normally using the phone for stuff like watching YouTube videos or texting the temperature is around 40 C .Even now as I write this the temperature is around 41 C. When I am playing games the temperature is around 43 C to 44 C . Is this temperature normal or is my phone overheating? I am scared now and I am thinking about a refund .Because even when I start using the phone it feels warm and temperature is around 39-40 C.

That's totally normal. Don't worry
My oneplus one was always about 50°C
Right now my oneplus x is 40°C

Quite normal. The phone doesn't feel hot to the hand though. It registers such temperatures in some apps. This operating temperature is quite less compared to some other phones I've used.

Will it affect the battery or the mother board ,because its always around 40 C ??

I have had major problems with my One Plus X too. Overheating was the big one. At the advice of many forums and One Plus - I sent it in for service. They tried to charge me $204 to replace the unit, because it had a small crack on the side of the screen, and was beyond economical repair. Then they said it was a defective battery. THEN they admitted it was a defective motherboard - and when I argued that they need to repair the device, they told me because it has a crack on the screen - they HAVE to replace the screen, they cannot just repair the motherboard. What the f*ck does a small crack (which you can't even see with the factory skin on it) have to do with the motherboard? And WHY should I have to pay for it - ESPECIALLY if the ONLY reason it was sent for service in the first place was a defective motherboard which was causing the device to get EXTREMELY HOT and then power down with 30% battery?
Needless to say - I declined the service and asked them to send me back my phone. They won't ....... Since then, they've offered to repair my phone for $82 if I'd only pay for the screen. But wait, wasn't it $204? So, they were trying to make me pay for the defective motherboard too?!?
It's been 28 days and they still have my phone. All thet will tell me is that "someone is looking into it" - but nothing is happening. So. Long story short BUYER BEWARE - the internet is full of horror stories about the terrible support from One Plus.....

If you are experiencing heating issue flash the latest community marshmallow build, it barely has bugs and the phone is damn cool unless you play hd games like vainglory.
The link for the build with instructions are below.

[Q] Should i return my phone or not

Hi every one
i have a problem and i would like to see your opinions about it
my phone tent to over heat when using 3G (in air conditioned room 40C - 45 C Outdoor)
ideal ( 35 C )
WiFi ( 37~40 C )
Gaming ( 39 C )
charging ( 40 C ) idel and (45 C) if i was Using it
by the way it's around 35 C here in Egypt now
i'v tried many modems but i still get the same temp
and by the way i can get about 4 ~ 4:30 Hours screen on time from the battery
i can return the phone but ....
the phone is more than perfect ,No screen problem , Very bright No tint of any kind , almost No ink marks , no connection problems , No hanging , no rebooting , no connection problem and very very fast
So what i want to know is
is this a battery problem , or its a hardware one
Cause if its a battery problem , ill be very happy to buy a new battery rather than exchange this prefect unit
and No , I don't have access to another S3 battery now to try
i'v only got 5 day to be able to Exchange it
so what do u think i should do
how is your battery life
the avg. use ive seen around here is 16 hrs.
yours?

What? The phone knows the max temp for the CPU and it will shut off if it reaches it. It's a lot higher than 45C.
I think you not need to worry. As stated before the phone will shut off if it reaches the limit temp. I was in Thailand earlier this year with my SGS2 and several times I was not able to charge it due to high temp the phone said. When it was some time in airconditon room I could charge it again

i guess u miss understood me
i know that the CPU will shut down the phone when it reach dangerous temp
all i was asking is , are these numbers i got okey , cause many reviews and users said that the phone doesn't heat up over 39 ?
and if not is it because of the battery ?

Clearly it does heat up over 39C if yours is.. if everything else on the phone is fine don't exchange it. Would you rather have a phone that is 5C hotter sometimes but perfect everywhere else or 39C with a possibility of dead pixels and such?

i with u on this one
my only fear is that heat could some how have a bad effect on the amoled screen or some other parts
any way i'v just got another battery from another s3 and i'll try it
i hope it's a battery problem
When I got my gs2 it was getting crazy hot 45-46° with normal use and I was about to return it,but after 10-12 days the CPU settled and from then on everything was ok.
It's the battery for sure
with this other battery i got from a friend my average temp dropped about 5 degrees all over in the same conditions
now i'll get my self an extra battery kit ( Battery Charger/Stand with extra 2100 mAh Battery )
thank god it's not the device it self

My temps are around 27c at idle with all wireless connections switched off, it barely get's over 35 when gaming and charging.
In all honesty, i would return the handset, 4 and half hours is pitiful.
You could try the battery but i'd say it's the handset.
At least that's my opinion.

Many people may be in cooler climates.. For example the last few weeks its been about 14c here and my phone has not gone over 30c
However today it was 25c hot sun.. And driving in my van using wifi and gps on the phone and it reached 50.9c. And was still working
So.. The hotter it is around the phone, the hotter the phone will get, the temps in your opening post dont look to bad, run time seems ok.. I think if you swap tje phone you will see the same thing.. My One X is the same if not hotter!
Its also a problem of having larger processors.. They generate heat, but dont have fans like pc's

Getting too hot

Has anyone experienced that the phone gets warm ( between 30-42 degrees centigrade) even when doing normal tasks like browsing the Web/the screen simply being on? Is this normal? Is there a fix for this if it is not?
Thats what i hate on my Z.... so you telling me Z2 has the same issue?!

You'd enjoy using the HTC One X then, normal use it easily reaches 42ºc, extended use and/or heavy use can see the phone reach 55ºc so for me, that's a welcome change.
I should be receiving the Z2 tomorrow anyway so I'll post my findings then.
I have noticed this also. I downloaded about 3gb of games and the top back of the phone got fairly hot

Yupp unfortunately. It does cool down quickly when the screen is off though so I'm wondering whether it's a design issue and poor heart dissipation

Water resistant coating will always trap more heat inside, maybe that's why Sony uses the slightly lower clocked SD801.

I think that would be a reasonable assumption.
I guess the only question is whether it's a deal breaker or not.
Does increased temperature effect battery life at all?
I noticed this happening recently but on rare occassions. It gets hot right where the camera is located but I'm not sure if it is related to the camera or some other app. I know that it overheats when recording 4K videos over 3 minutes. The quick fix when it heats up is to restart the device so to me it is definitelty software realted.
Mine gets warm, but not got enough to be a problem so far. I'm in the UK.

Coming from the Galaxy Note 2, when my phone got warm it indicated that there was a problem. Maybe since this is part of the design, with the waterproofing at all, I'll just have to learn to accept that the phone will get a little warm.
On the plus side, it'll be good for the winter, to warm up the hands

Most definitely.
Well i can asure you that all snapdragon 800 soc overheat and it depends on what you do,my curent device lg G2 when i bought it,it had jellybean on it whne browsing web listening to music etc it always got hot,but when plating games it was a very big overheating ,the procesor got up to 72`C ad baterry was on 42`C and i thought it was a problem with the phone but after updating to kitkat all problems with overheating where gon even in graphinc intense games it took the phone 30 minutes to heat up significantly + on a side note the battery got a lot better i managed 4 hours and 36 minutes of screen time.
Botom line its a software problem coupled with the nano coting(it blocks heat but not in a bad way that the phone will overheat from that maybe a 5`C block).
Overheating is the reason I didn't get the G2.
It overheated doing basic stuff.
It can't be fixed by software. LG certainly didn't release a fix, so don't expect one for the Z2.
When a phone has overheating problems then it will always have it, just like a laptop or any other hardware.
You'll have to deal with it.

Well not really my m7 used to get warm / hot with 3g or gaming up to 42c after sense 6 it refuses to go above 35c and when gaming up to 39c , so far only known phone that doesn't get hot is the m8. Imo it's tolerable for z2 to stay warmer then other devices , glass isn't the best option for cool phone + sealed phone due water resistance.
Btw yes warm / hot phones have shorter battery life due heat issues , warmer battery = faster discharge rate.
Imo if z2 gets hot only when gaming it's fine, all phones get warm but if it's crossing 37/38c up to 40+ on WiFi and normal usage I'd call that a problem. You can forget the gaming if this is the case lol , at least stable gaming without fps loss and throttle.
The overheating when using the camera is a bit of a concern, especially since that was one of the main reasons i bought the phone.
Is it definitely software related or hardware?
As if its software i can wait for a fix, but if its hardware then i'll need to swap phones
After reading other device forums seems like all the Snapdragon 800/801 devices have the overheating issue: SGS5, Z2, G2, etc.
I think it's because the new SoC is so powerful that it generates a lot of heart, especially when gaming.
Maybe the 805 will fix this. Not gonna buy a device with 800/801 because almost all of them have overheating issues.

Does the Z5c still overheat?

I'm getting ready to pack in my M8, and I want to go the same size or smaller for under $450 (tops). The Z5c seems to be the only Android phone that really fits that bill while keeping respectable performance, but there are two issues that have me thinking twice: overheating and the "self-cracking glass".
I know nothing can be done about the screen (unless a tempered glass protector helps to keep it intact), but the overheating, if fixed, could sway me away from the Honor 8 or LG G5. I've read that the firmware update that came along with Marshmallow has largely fixed the problem, and combined with a patch available here that throttles the phone a little more aggressively, heat is no longer a big problem. That said, I'm concerned about gimping the performance of the phone in order to keep it from char-broiling my hands. How noticeable is the throttling and, if thermals are still an issue with the phone, how big of one are they?
If you wouldn't recommend the Z5c, the thermal issues remain or the throttling hurts performance in a noticeable way, I'd be curious if there are any other phones (with a micro SD slot) that you think are worth looking at.
Thanks!
Hey , i have my phone from March
this year, 3-4 updates still overheating..
battery top 46C, and cpu 60C MAX so far and stays there,
but! when battery reached 40C+ and CPU 60C+, device become 50% slow (i guess to prevent overheating)
on some games\apps you feel it, some not,
even on anutu cold device is about 90K hot device is about 50K score
after 5 -15 minutes of gaming already from 28 to 43, (depend room temp and game\app) sometimes i can shoot 4K videos for 10 minutes sometimes 1 hour
i think self cracked glass happening because two reasons
1 mainly reason: moving fast from cold when the glass is pretty hot by much (heat cause expanded)
2.sitting on device without notice
ps
sorry if my english is bad

Thank you! Do you know if the X Compact will run any cooler? The lower power chipset can only help, but I'm concerned about paying $500 for a phone that might not be as powerful as its older brother, which now retails for $100+ less, especially if the overheating and cracked glass issues aren't solved.
If only the Honor 8 wasn't riddled with iOS disease...
you're welcome
As far as iknow for the X compact does not have 4K, slower GPU,(CPU speed is about the same) not water resistant \proof
but he run abit cooler and got more RAM 3 for multitasking
i own only Z5 Compact

Any S810 device will overheat, it's inherently badly designed. Sony's hardware thermal solution is probably the best any OEM have done with the S810. It's also possible that Sony has optimized under-the-hood settings to further reduce load on the SoC and keep the temperature down.
Other software tweaks are mostly just a balance game of performance and throttling threshold.
Stock Sony firmware goes the more conservative route, so usually you won't experience noticeable heat when using it lightly.
It will still get pretty hot if you use it for intensive tasks that utilizes the full capacity of the hardware, such as playing demanding games, record in 4K for a long period of time, or watch videos that need a lot of complex decoding... etc.
If you're looking for performance without "unnecessary" throttling, just avoid all S810 devices.
Personally, most of the time I had no problems with the temp and perf of my Z5C, but there has been a few cases where I did experience slowdowns due to the throttling.
Got mine from December 2015. After few weeks of usage, it really overheats a lot. After several updates through the months, Device still overheats until now, still uncomfortable to the touch when it overheats. Tried reformatting yesterday, performance seems better with less bloatware stuff and on regular usage. But when cpu is under heavy load, device heats up and performance is reduced a lot to the point that it lags. But overall, still love my Z5C~ <3
It overheats uncomfortably. I tried xpower 4.0 ROM, smarttemperaturex mod, etc although it does reduce heat but not enough to be comfortable and im not talking about heavy tasks I'm talking about Firefox browser, WhatsApp and tapatalk.
The phone is almost never room temperature when using its either warm or hot which gets annoying after some time, don't even let me mention how hot it can get with few minutes of phone calls.
Sent from my E5823 using Tapatalk
I'd say go for X Compact. Zero overheating issues. This heat actually gets on your nerves at one point. While the gpu of X Compact is inferior, in long periods of gaming there won't be any throttling on XC but Z5c will give half the performance so at the end of the day, the X Compact will feel a lot snappier
Sent from my E5803 using XDA-Developers mobile app
It overheats like crazy. I'm flashing 5.1 in hope that it will help.
When running Antutu i put my phone in refrigerator so that I can get a better score! :silly:
Any new cpu is hotter than quad-core of sd800/801 bcoz it's now much faster, even sd820 gets hot during heavy loading though better than sd810.
I've flashed SmartTemperatureX v1.61(no charging bug) and found temp is acceptable and battery life improved a bit.

Overheating

Not sure if you guys experienced this, but I was playing around with the Google Assistant in Akinator and my device temperature went sky high up to the point where the phone notified me that it has to dim the screen and take action against that.
I set my phone to the max resolution and framerate, and I also keep it in the silicone bumper they shipped.
Did you guys ever see this happen too?
P.s. it wasn't charging.

No issues here, in fact I've been impressed with how cool it stays. Hammered some benchmarks and it barely went over 45c
This is obviously just sat idling now but I've been using the phone for over an hour on max resolution, 90hz and no power saving.
I faced the same in two instances. One, when I was transferring files through Xender. Second, when my Google Photos were syncing with cloud.
Received the same notification as well. The phone was untouchably hot and battery drained a lot faster.
My assumption is whenever there's a big load of data transfer, the phone turns unbearably hot.
I really don't know why you're experiencing this, I have barely put my phone down today and it's been ambient temperature at best including when playing COD. I've got a fair sized file transfer going here and temperatures are absolutely fine
I should also point out before my first screenshot at 10am I had 17 hours standby. I've used my phone on and off all day for web browsing, music and some gaming and in the second screenshot 10 hours later I still have 30% battery remaining and it's not once gotten hot at all. Running 10.0.3 since yesterday afternoon.

Great to know that, I have no clue why we are facing this then. I was hoping it will get better with the future software updates.
Also, there's so much less to read about OnePlus 7T Pro compared to OnePlus 7 Pro. Seems a lot of people did not go for it hence the development is really less, I hope it catches up soon. Waited for so long to get a OnePlus device.
I am facing the same issue, sometimes I'll be doing literally nothing but messaging and the phone will become uncomfortably warm like in the 60's - 70°c also my battery life is quite lower than expected around 4 hours SOT I'm going to try a factory reset and hope for the best
Having exactly the same issue, brand new unit. Delivered today, CPU temps reaching 85 Celsius ! (updated to latest Android 10, not charging, not playing games or doing any intense tasks).
I own a OP6 and OP2 and never felt such uncomfortable heat while holding the phone, hoping its just a deficient unit and not a general problem with the OP7T Pro.
Pic attached.

Question Any overheating issues with your new Pixel 6/6 Pro?

Google hasn't had the best track record with their previous Pixels. They've all seemed to have at least one hardware issue. The Pixel 5s have overheating problems for example. Just wondering if anyone has run into any issues?
Haven't heard of any... but it's early in the game!
My 6 got hot during the initial setup, but once I turned off the 5G it cooled off a bit and I stayed on Wi-Fi.
Only a bit of warmth during initial setup, nothing that concerned me much.
The phone got very hot during charging.
Ok i just received my pixel 6 pro few hours ago and i am noticing heat issue around the back, starting from curve area, as i keep on using i can feel temperature in the back and screen as well. Really disappointed. I dont know what shall i do next

I am having the same exact issue. I went to the store and they told me that they will send the phone for assessment and will take a month. Ridiculous
Nope!
Video recording literally stopped after 7 min of 4k 60fps because the phone got too hot.
I got a message telling me to wait until the phone cools down. The screenshot of this message didn't even save..
My pixel 6 pro is getting hot during normal use too. Guess they need to update.
Yes it is getting extremely hot only by using insta, facebook, TikTok. No games installed. Left side of the phone starts getting warm then screen and back.
My phone was delivered on 26th Oct still have same issue. It looks like it'll be a case like snapdragon 810
My phone was overheating and battery drain a lot but since i put 4G on prefered nerwork, battery isn't draining anymore and don't heat no more.
Usefull or useless ?
My Pixel 6 Pro overheats recording 4K 60 and stops after 10-12min. Room temp 25c with no case.
I tried 4K 30 with the same results.
1080p 30 on the other hand can keep on going indefinitely I think. I got a message at 28min that the phone is getting hot, but it didn't stop the recording. Around 40min it reached thermal saturation and was fluctuating between 43c and 44.4c. I stopped it at 48:49min.
I think the new camera sensor overheats before the SoC and stops the recording.
my pixel 6 is overheating on a daily use. battery tab in setting telling me Instagram is sucking the battery, so I guess it's because of Instagram.
pixel 5 performed much better, to be honest. the battery also doesn't last that long. it's kinda disappointing. i thought it could be because my initial install somehow went wrong, so i am actually right now backing all up to do a factory reset. But after finding this thread, i seem not to be the only one, .. struggling with the idea to send it back.
do you think they will fix it? nobody else seems to complain. i mean no review ever said anything about overheating..

i will give this a try. if this will still drain my battery and overheating the phone I will go back to my pixel 5. glad I didn't sell it that fast
My pixel 6 is overheating on 4G/5G and battery drains fast. Browsing YT, video freeze and hangs. Same scenario, but connected to wireless network, getting +8h SOT, no freeze, no heat.
Just so everyone understands.
The P6 back cover plate is a heat sink.
The back plate is lined with copper to pull heat away from the electronics.
So with this in mind, the back plate can get hot while charging or heavy use.

Yeah, this has been surprising to me. So either Google is sending an altered version or reviewers don't use the phone that much and just make the video. Literally everyone I know who got the pixel 6/pro can feel the heat within few hours

I'm kinda glad to hear I'm not the only one, but it's pretty disappointing.
I now factory reset my phone without transferring old data from my old phone, just used backup'ed data from google one.
I need to test that out. definitely changing the preferred network type from 5G to LTE helped a bit. but battery performance still seems to be horrible bad in comparison to the Pixel 5.
it seems like you can not rely on youtube reviews for smartphones nowadays :/ looking at you Marques
I do run my phones with a case so sometimes hard to tell. Only time I experience warmth is running a couple mobile games, but they did this on my Pixel 5 as well. No extreme overheating or extreme battery draining experienced.
