i want to flash AOKP for galaxy s2 and i found 2 of them Revolt and thunder roms
download both + dorimanx kernel placed on SD going into CWM trying to flash kernel and rom but im getting this message :
E:signature verification failed !!
Like just about everything else on here, 'E:signature verification failed !!' has been covered many many times on here (Including a couple of times over the past few weeks). Search for those threads, your answer will be in one of them.
i think i have the stock recovery !!

Having stock recovery would explain your problem. If you flash the correct CFRoot kernel via Odin, yes, you will have a rooted phone + CWM. However, many people prefer to simply flash the Odin version of a custom kernel (like Siyah) to achieve this aim these days (Given the issues with 4.0.4 stock kernels, which CFRoot is, and the brickbug). Find the relevant Odin flashable version of Siyah for the Android version you're running; check the Siyah threads for which build is compatible with which version of Android (should be on the first page).
all the Cf-root is ICS and im running JB what i can do in that case ??

Which as you said is stock recovery. You can flash temporary versions of CWM from stock recovery, but these only persists until the next reboot/aren't permanent. Make life easy for yourself & flash the Odin version of a rooted kernel as advised in my PP (Use CFRoot if you really want to, just don't do a wipe from CWM while you're running it, wait till you're running a custom kernel before doing any wipes).

ye but the problem cf-root only for ICS and im on JB so if i flash it and then flash JB kernel will do the job or i will stuck !?

OK. This is my final post to this thread. I tire very quickly of having to repeat myself.
For the last time...Go to the Siyah threads. Work out which Siyah build you need for the Android version you're running. Get the Odin flashable version of that kernel. Reboot into download mode & flash it with Odin.
Done.
Rooted phone + CWM.

Q1. In which process of flashing i am modifying my bootloader? (while flashing cwm, kernal etc..)
Q2. When i flash stock ROM through Odin, do i restore the kernal, recovery and the flash counter?
Q.3 Is flashing a ROM after root is a risky thing?
Q.4 Can I flash a rom directly after rooting and flashing CWM? (without changing kernal?)

hallo im also new to rooting but flashed cm10.1 yesterday with root and can share what i did.
i also got i9300 nordic version of the s3. and downloaded some files
odin 3.07
cfroot 3.64
cm10.1
gapps from 03-2013
i resettet my phone and enabled USB debugging and put the phone in download mode and startet up odin and made sure its connected and loaded cfroot.tar and flashed and the phone rebootet itself and installed the ness. apps for rooting. then i bootet up in recovery manager and went to install from sdcard and installed cm10.1 and then gapps and then did factory reset and dalvik wipe and rebootet and it bootet up CM10.1 and deleted /0 folder on the phone which was empty folder from previous touchwiz samsung rom
and yes there are risks but i did this 2 times. tw to cm10 and then back again but everything went problem free. so the risk ppl are talking about is mostly likely cuz some broke and if u mess up it breaks. so it can happen.
q1; when u flash cfroot the bootloader changed and it changes counter from 0 to 1.
q2: when u flash stock back with odin it flashes rom and bootloader/recovery but counter is the same but can be fixed easily. ( did it myself between my 2 flashes so when i flashed back to CM10 it still was on 1
q3: i think its everything thats risky. dont think root and rom flashing are more risky than others
q4: dont know what u mean exactly. i didnt mess with kernals. CM10.1 has a good one i think.
q5: dont either
q6: i dont have any yelly triagle on my cfroot+cm10.1. theres a lille read thing in the left corner like 2mm long that shows u got flashed.

For kernels that support both go here or here. At the moment Siyah or Goggy Max are the people's choices I assume.

Any flashing involves risk from almost no risk to a much bigger risk for those that dont read the basics and follow instructions .

1. You can flash boooader separately or when you flash stock roms. (I can be wrong but this is what I know)
2. I never done that but yes for first two, not sure about flash counter, you may still have to clear them with TA first.
3. As above answer, it's always risky to do stuff without proper knowledge and no guarantees even after proper knowledge but mostly no.
4. Yes.
5. Kernels are essential part of your phone and they are compatible with your os version only and also ur phone model. So if a kernel is for s3 4.2.2, you can't flash it over to amy other model or os version. Yes for second part.
6. No. Triangle away may remove your flashing counter but as long as you have custom anything and your rom status is modified that triangle will be there.

Siyah supports both cm and stock. Yes, you cam flash cm over stock or siyah kernel.
You have to flash your kernel again after every rom flash.

As long as the rom comes with a kernel, which is the normal base, you have to flash the kernel again. Usually you can do this direct from recovery before the full reboot.
As long as the kernel supports your rom type (see each kernel's thread for it), you should be fine as long as you follow the instructions.

bootloader no clue, I never touched it, too dangerous to mess up stuff.
for flashing googy, usually you do it in CWM or via Odin. Check out the thread and read the instructions. Syiah's thread also got a huge amount of guides in the first couple of posts and they should be valid somehow for Googy as well as it is based on Siyah.

Please do not start messing with bootloaders .
Logic says read the instructions for the kernel you want to flash .
Its a CWM file and flashed via recovery .
You really should bother yourself to read the basic faqs and guide .

The bootloader isn't modified. The bootloader *shows* modified by reading other data.

I am new to this phone an I am confused about one thing. With my previous phone, I installed any ROM that I wanted, and the cwm recovery would be the same, and will not be affected at all. But, I changed my ROM to PACman ROM and I noticed that the cwm recovery version changed as well.
So, I have three questions:
- Firstly, How does this work? I opened up a ROM zip package, but I only found the regular android files, but I didn't find any recovery.img. So, how does replacing the ROM replace the recovery work when a ROM is flashed?
- Secondly, does changing only the kernel also change the cwm recovery? For example, if I flash Dorimanx kernel, will it also change the cwm recovery? If yes, then how does this work?
- Lastly, if I build a ROM, is it necessary to add a recovery with the ROM as well? Or, if I build a ROM without recovery, will it affect the recovery when it is flashed?
I know that these questions might have long answers, but I am keen to know the answers, no matter how long they are.
Please try to answer all three of the questions. Or, answer as many as you can, because those questions regarding the changing of cwm recovery is very confusing.

Hello, congrats on your new phone Unfortunately, i can't give you lenghty information about this because i don't think i know that much, but here are some facts for you:
-When you flash a new ROM, it will overwrite kernel too, so you will have a new kernel,
-When you flash a new kernel, it will overwrite the recovery, so you will have a new recovery,for example if A kernel has cwm as recovery, if you flash A kernel you will have cwm, and if B kernel has TWRP as recovery, when you flash B kernel you will have TWRP recovery,
-Since you have to have a kernel for your ROM, if you build a ROM, you must have a kernel=recovery, you can build the kernel yourself or use someone's kernel, but recovery must be embedded in the kernel (As far as i know)
When you start building your own ROM, i think you will find out the "how"s yourself though

That was short, but it does kind of make sense. Since I am using CM kernel right now, I guess the recovery will already be in there. But, If I want to create my own kernel from scratch, then are there any guides or information pages that give me an idea on how to do it?

But, if, for example, I install dorimanx kernel, then the recovery embedded in dorimanx kernel will be installed. So, if I dualboot a second ROM from dorimanx recovery, then the recovery from the second ROM would be installed. That would mean that I won't be able to dualboot again?
Hmm, i think dualbooting has some different mechanisms, since you dual boot you have to have ONE kernel that supports dual boot, recovery will be the same since kernel is the same. So basically, you have A rom which has A kernel, then you flash B rom which has B kernel to dualboot, but there can't be two kernels at the same time so you must choose between A kernel or B kernel (both has to support dualboot ofc), and since recovery is embedded in kernel, you will have A recovery or B recovery, not both.

Let me start off by saying that I am not one of those who directly ask questions before reading. Honestly, I have been reading from guide to guide and it is because of the many guides on the forum and Google that I have become confused on where to start.
I have rooted and flashed ROMs + kernels on my old phone, so I know most of how it works, but its the first time I use a Samsung phone, so I would really love some help to get started.
All in all, I have only few questions, but important ones I would love to be covered. Better safe than sorry, right?
Let's get started:
I am currently running stock JB - to get root I shall just flash CF-Root, or is anything else recommended?
Once rooted, is there any recovery I shall use that is more "stable" than any other? CWM, CWM Touch, TWRP etc.? Lets say I want to try NeatROM + Apolo kernel, will that require any specific recovery?
If I want to try different ROMs out, like to go from NeatROM to SlimBean to CM11, can I do all that by using the same recovery? I know about the full wipes, I just want to make sure I can flash other ROMs straight away or if I need to change things before?
That is all for now. Once this is covered up, I highly believe I can take care of myself in this huge community and to help others too once I get a little experienced

Hmm,as all your questions are somehow recovery/kernel related,you may try flashing Philz kernel.It's basically a stock kernel+advanced cwm recovery.You'll get root too.Its cwm can flash all roms up to android 4.3.1.I would call this option a safe and easy bet.
Also,if you want to try kitkat roms,like cm11,you'll have to update to kitkat compatible recovery,like cwm 6.0.4.7 etc,first.

Look at your rom's build number and choose accordingly.To check,go to settings/about device.
Use this kernel only for stock/stock based JB or ICS,as it has older,kitkat incompatible, CWM.
To flash 4.4.x roms,you can do it by following these simple steps:
1.Download a 6.0.4.x or newer CWM for i9100.
2.Boot to Philz recovery.Do a nandroid backup.
3.Flash new CWM.
4.Reboot recovery.
5.Full wipe,then flash chosed kitkat rom+gapps.
6.Reboot and enjoy!!

With the CWM 6.0.3.2,which is latest in Philz kernel,you can flash all Jelly Bean roms(4.1.x to 4.3.1).This includes both stock samsung 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and custom JB roms,like AOSP(that SlimSaber 4.3.1 is),CM,AOKP and so on...Just no KitKat love.
Don't forget to do a nandroid backup and EFS(this is vital) backup in recovery before you start. Just in case you know.

The smartphone is already root (Super Su 2.1) installed busy box 1.22.1 and I want to install this ROM CM-11-20140914-NIGHTLY-i9300 and Kernel boeffla-kernel-2.3a-CM11.0-i9300.CWM
I've changed the recovery (I have TWRP and CMR)
I want ask about:
1. Is it the good choice of the combination of ROM and kernel and are they compatible with my phone?
2 In my situation with the stock kernel and stock ROM what I have to install first? Kernel and then ROM or vice versa, because I don’t want to BRIC the phone.
3 If something goes wrong is there already an option for unbrick or not?

1. Yes, i had both of them for awhile and it worked great for me, pretty good battery (i changed the governor and i/o scheduler though).
2. ROM then kernel, atleast ive always done that. If you flash rom second, the cm stock kernel will be installed and you will have to flash boeffla again.
3. Not too sure about unbricking, sorry. As far as i know, brick means pretty much useless/deadweight.
4. CM installer installs a snapshot for the installer and not the nightly you mentioned along with the cm stock kernel. I always flash manually via CWM recovery but that's my personal choice.
5. To backup the kernel, someone else will know but you could just make a nandroid backup of everything before flashing (recommended anyways).
6. I wouldnt know, sorry.
