Hey guys,
My SGS2 just got soft-bricked, stuck on samsung logo. I didn't do nothing actually, just restarted my phone.
I have rooted phone with stock OS (latest one) on it a long time ago.
I can enter into recovery mode. Tried to wipe data with no luck.
BUT I want to make a backup. I read that if I install CWM recovery I will be able to mount USB storage to make backups. Is it possible to backup contacts using USB?
I also read that on SGS2 devices CWM will update OS's kernel so I will have to install new OS. Is it true?
Anyway, is it possible to make a full backup in this case?

"A recovery is a kernel and a kernel is a recovery"
If your current OS supports the new kernel then there won't be a need to install a new OS.

How to check if my OS supports new kernel?
What is more important is that if I install CWM breaking my current ROM and make a full backup will I be able to restore this backup on new ROM?
I ask this because I found the following warning:
"Warning: For GT-i9100 and SGH-i777, installing CWM or TWRP recovery also installs kernel. This is only recommended to install when installing a new custom ROM. Installing CWM/TWRP recovery will most likely break the ROM you are running currently as it overwrites the ROM’s kernel."

Simple. Just read the information provided by the threads. If you are on official jelly bean, use Apolo Kernel 4.15b or Siyah Kernel (Although this is outdated now). For Lollipop, you can either use DorimanX kernel 11.0 or CM12.1 kernel with TWRP by Lysergic acid (If you want to use CM12.1). For kitkat, you can use DorimanX kernel 10.45 by Me or 10.44 by Cybernetus, Gustavo kernel (make sure you install KK version) or Apolo Kernel 7.3.

It depends on what ROM you are using. If you install the correct kernel, the ROM will not break at all.

Hi! Is there any way to check the version of ROM I use on this phone? Maybe from recovery mode?
P.S.: I used latest OS which came through official update on SGS2 in Europe. It was something like 4.2.3 or 4.3.3.
If it was the last/latest/final official update, it would have been 4.1.2 Jellybean.....

OK, let's imagine I install CWM with newer kernel breaking my ROM... what if I install older version after that? Will my ROM be back to work?
It *might* well be ok.....but having never intentionally installed the wrong kernel, I'm not going to stake my life on that as I have ZERO experience of that scenario....

Stock 4.3.3 doesn't exist
Samsung only provided android version 4.1.2 as the last version.
If you install a older kernel after flashing the wrong kernel, your ROM should work again. Once again, the "older" kernel needs to be the correct version for the ROM.
If you do install the wrong kernel, your ROM will not boot and will either give you black screen or bootloop or phone constantly rebooting. So you need to quickly get to the recovery using the button combinations.

I recently heard about PAC MAN ROM 4.2.2 for Galaxy GT I9100 which is hybrid of different ROMs like Paranoid, CynogenMod etc. I wanted to know how much stable is this ROM in terms of performance and battery life. Additionally, is custom kernel and CWM required to install this ROM or simply flashing the new ROM will do the job? I really am looking forward to installing this ROM in my phone

Like all custom ROMs, PACman ROM requires CWM and root. You don't need a custom kernel per se, but flashing a custom kernel is the best way to get root as well as CWM.

Can you please suggest me a stable custom Kernel that would be comparatively safe for my device GT I9100. I would be quite glad if you would help me with it...:good:
In discussing about the kernel in this thread in post# 619 pg 62 Viper has suggested me with Philz Kernel and FAQs of PacMan ROM, they suggest Dorimax Kernel for my device. So, are these kernel better in performance than the stock kernel or not and does performance of ROM depend upon kernel as well? Since I can backup my ROM and flash new ROM with temporary CWM, I am thinking of using it instead of other custom kernel so as not to mess up with my stock kernel.

Actually all custom kernels are safe. Just make sure (by reading the instructions) you flash the compatible one.
Philz-kernel for example cannot be used with PAC. Just try the stock kernel. If you don't like it, you can try (for example) Dorimanx kernel.

So if I want to try different ROMs can Dorimanx do the job for me? And since my device is already rooted do I need to unroot first before flashing new kernel which have rooting functionality?

No you don't need to un-root and like her said.......read the instructions and search forums for specific kernals for specific ROMs. I'm not sure but I don't think dorimanx is compatible with ALL ROMs.
Anyone clarify?

No, you need to do a back up to your pc first using kies preferably.....this will make sure its put back to stock standard for warranty purposes.

I have rooted my device by flashing zip file. And according to Donnie Sins in post#4 in this thread suggested that Philz-kernel cannot be used with PAC. Now I am more confused....:laugh::laugh::good:

Lol, i said to install 'Philz' kernel so that u can use its recovery to flash PAC after that the 'Philz' kernel will be replaced by the one that comes with the PAC rom for u
PS- alternatively u can flash 'Dorimanx' kernel and use its recovery to flassh PAC rom

u cannot flash dori kernel from Stock recovery ma8 , instead Dwnld the V8.34 (.tar extension file ) from dori site and flash the same using 'ODIN' on PC. then reboot ur phone into dori kernel recovery and from there u do all the necessary wipes and install 'PAC' rom as per its install instruction's
This recovery is more or less useless now. Files will still be hosted though.

No you cannot but the fastest way to get from stock 4.1.2 to Kitkat 4.4 is to
1. Download this into external SDcard
2. Download my recovery and what ever ROM+Files you need into internal/external
3. Flash first file in stock recovery
4. Flash my recovery, reboot back into recovery
5. Wipe data+cache (factory reset)
6. Flash the ROM+Files
7. Reboot

foot note/tip. upgrade/flash Direct from ICS404 to KKat is possible But the user Must Format /system /data /cache within CWM Kkat as normal factory reset doesn't work for such a big version jump.(my thoughts/theory only).

Reason for request. Is at moment Dorimanx kernel has older cwm. So when I flash permanent CWM kk compatible then re-flash Dori it can break 2nd ROM boot access/entry.
Therefore if possible a Temp version of what you are doing/releasing would be Perfect for my & others dualboot kitkat problems.

I believe you do need the sources. From what I see you work on the Desire HD (Ace) ? Either you download the sources and compile from there or you can try Koush's CWM builder ( just search CWM builder on google ). As for source code Cm10.2 source can be upwards of 10GB easily. For the DHD im not sure if you guys have official CM11 source?

We've got unofficial builds of cm11, and most devs have release pretty stable device and kernel trees. Thanks, 10GB isn't bad at all, but will it require me to setup my Build Environment differently?

I'm running cwm version 5.8.1.5 and on stock rom 4.1.2. I am thinking of upgrading to 4.4.2. So can u just explain how to proceed with the recovery installation?
Okay can anyone help me? My odin 3.09 while flashing cwm 6.0.2.9 said reset instead of pass. Then phone turned off. After that I can only access download mode and it shows flash counter 2 times. Any help? Was running stock 4.1.2 rooted.

Hi guys,
I'm using on my S2 a Cyanogenmod Rom (v. 11-20140504-snapshot-M6-I9100) and as recovery CWM-based recovery v.6.0.4.8.
Fortunelly I made a complete backup so I'm able to restore anytime my best configuration with that rom.
The problem come out if, reflashing the stock firmware, I would flash again the recovery and rom. The device do not install twice giving me back ERROR 7.
Do anybodies know why it happens?
I arrived to that configuration flashing CM11-M6 from another CM version (markox89) and recovery v 6.0.4.8 from Philz temporary recovery (and than I flashed the version 6.0.4.7 auto updated to 6.0.4.8).

My guess is that you need to flash a CM11/KK compatible kernel first. From what I know, Philz is a samsung base kernel (4.12), so it wont work. Try flashing Gustavo's 21/4 or Apolo 7.0vb kernel which are the best of the lot for the aging GS2 now.

I found the issue.... I downloaded the rom for I9100g, not mine.... Maybe I have to drink less when i'm downloading&flashing...
I have a GS2 I9100XWLSW, suffering the EMMC brick bug. Still with stock kernel and recovery. Rooted with Framaroot.
First of all I'd want to flash a recovery, and a safe kernel - to avoid any possibile brick bug.
Later on I plan to flash Cyanogen or Omnirom, once a Lollipop stable versions is out.
Looking around I've found many ways to do this, but I'm unsure which one is safes (and possibly easier too):

In particular, there's something concerning my GS2 that I didn't fully understand.. seems like differently from other phones, CWM needs to be installed together with a specific Kernel to work. Is this something true only for Philz's version, or is it so for CWM itself?

Sincw you are on stock jelly bean rom, use apolo kernel 4.14 as it uses TWRP which supports most zips and doesnt have to be updated that often. Lollipop roms only require cwm versions 6.0.4.8+ or TWRP 2.7.1.0+. Usually i don't recommend using cwm manager to install cwm as the app installs an old version of cwm anyway and requires people to pay if they want the latest version.
If your cwm is out of date, you will need to update the kernel (not just the recovery).
Installing a newer cwm will not modify the kernel to make it unsafe.

Thank you! Ok, let's see if I got everything right:
- First I need to flash Apolo, but I can't find the 4.14 version. Do I still use Odin? Instructions are unclear. The official thread seems this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/development-derivatives/kernel-t2291756/post41742325
- By flashing Apolo 4.14 I should get a new kernel (EMMC safe) and TWRP (which version?)
- With the above, I can still run my stock JB 4.1.2, right?
Then, once I want to flash a Lollipo ROM:
- Do I need to update TWRP? Does this break my ability to run my current JB 4.1.2 ?
- Flashing the Lollipop ROM will overwrite the Apolo Kernel 4.14 with a suitable Lollipop kernel, right? Or am I forced to also flash a Lollipop kernel manually (either Apolo or anoter)?

What I said before about apolo requires the usage of CWM. If you can, flash philz kernel (through odin)first then you can flash apolo 4.14 (TWRP) using cwm. All kernels for the s2 are safe from the emmc brickbug (just make sure you read the first post of the kernel threads). TWRP version should be 2.7.0.0, but it should work fine with all zip files.
When you flash a lollipop rom, you most likely will not have to update TWRP (unlikely as the source code for lollipop isn't going to change). You can still flash back stock JB from a backup with no problems. Yes, flashing lollipop will replace apolo with a compatible kernel.

All right, so, to recap, is this right?

Thank you very much! Also found the Apolo version you were talking about. BTW, the reason I have to pass through Philz to flash Apolo is just because that Apolo version is available in .zip format only, right? Because if there was a .tar, I could just flash the stock rom with Apolo through Odin, without going through Philz first, right?

I finally did all of the above, and I can confirm that everything worked perfectly. I just skipped during the Apolo flashing the clean script suggested, and just did Clean Cache + Dalvik Cache.
Now I have TWRP and Apolo v4.15.
Noticed however that TWRP is v2.6.3 , while you said that I would probably need 2.7.1.0+ to later flash Omnirom or CM12
Is it okay anyway, or do I need to flash a new one? Can I risk breaking something if I try to flash a new TWRP? I mean: may I end up flashing a TWRP not supported with my kernel / JB and get bootloops or something bad?

You will need to flash a newer recovery. If you use philz recovery, you can install all lollipop roms and kikat roms without a problem

That link is indeed philz's latest version for i9100 (also from size it seems with just the recover, and no kernel, right?), but does it still run on JB with Apolo kernel? On Philz's thread I read something about latest versions supporting only kitkat / lollipop. Does it mean I have to flash this Philz's update just before flashing Lollipop, or I can flash it already and running my JB + Apolo, without problems?
Also, I heard that Philz is no longer updating his recover (is it?), so if possible I would prefer to stick with TWRP.. if there is a TWRP version which suits my needs with my device, of course!

And i also read that the dorimanX kernel is battery friendly, but where do i get the one for my android 4.4?
I have now a kernel installed ( CM recovery+ kernel for Kitkat -odinflashable), The version of CWM is v6.5.0.1.
Please help me

I think dorimanx will replace your cwm with its own version(I am on 6.0.4.8), but there is not much difference. You can always flash the newer version if you really need it.
Odin won't see it as it is not a .tar file, just flash it from recovery. It is recommended if you are not re-flashing the rom to use the kernelwipe script from @hawkerpaul to make sure there are no issues from residual files from the old kernel.
I don't know about a custom boot-animation, it may be possible but not something that is a feature of the kernel

No, that would install the stock kernel again. If you have been using the rom as is for a while I would use the kernelwipe script, then just flash the dorimanx kernel from recovery, then just reboot into system. You can flash the kernel without the script but you run the risk of bugs because of left over files from the previous kernel.
