Shelf causing lag? - OnePlus X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been dealing with small lags on this phone. I thought the sd 801 was plenty enough chip to power the minimal oxygen os. Anyways, I disabled shelf and its consistently very smooth now. Don't know if its just coincidence or not...but I had even tried clearing caches...factory resets. Turning the shelf feature if seems to have had the biggest effect on a consistently smooth performance.

[Q] battery lifeafter ICS - better/worse/ts?

can you comment already ?
Actually, after 8.8.3.33 (not just ICS), I've noticed battery life to be excellent on standby, but less in actual use. I seem to run between 10%-15%/hour use when doing normal things (browsing, RSS reading, etc.).
I've been using some apps to look for the culprit, and all I've found so far is that the Prime seems to spend more time at 1200MHz and less time at lower speeds. I seem to remember more of a distribution of speeds prior to .33. I wonder if they didn't make the Tegra 3's mode changing less aggressive or something in the later builds.

another thing to take care of in custom rom I think, Devs
I think that ASUS and Nvidia will be making these adjustments for awhile. This is very new tech, and as they tweak one thing, another thing gets worse. I'm pretty confident that after a few more revisions they'll find a good balance between performance and battery life.
I remember some people complaining that there was a noticeable hitch as the Tegra 3 switch power states, and so maybe an adjustment was made to reduce the number of switches. Probably they just need to give some more weight to lower-power states.
I also notice that in ICS (didn't test it in .33), Power saver mode doesn't seem to have much of an impact. I need to run some longer tests, but certainly I can't notice any performance difference. So, that lends credence to the theory (at least to me, with the limited info I have) that the power settings are a little funky at the moment.

Heating Problem is it fixable?

I have a 16g black one from Google Play. and luckily it has no light bleed, minimal give on the back but the thing just get HOT even when I am using tasks like watching video or reading Chrome like now. I monitor the Cpu temp and it is around 40 > 50C when watching video surfing the web etc. However, when I am playing 3D games and stuff it get to about 60 > 75C. I dont know if it is normal or not and is this just a software or hardware issue because it get really hot on the top near the camera and both the screen and the metal rim get hot and burn my hands. I am considering RMA it if is cant be fix through a software update though. So is can it be fix through further update or rooting and new custom rom help ? And is a case gonna help reducing the heat to my hands ?
Also if I wait for the next batch can I wait and exchange for a better one then ?

You must be the lucky one the got the special unannounced option !
Only a select few have the New HTC "Hand warmer" edition made just for cooler climates like Antarctica.
Guys, can anyone help ?
This is normal. Any processor heats up with heavy gaming. The nexus 5 (snapdragon 800) can break the 70C mark in some cases. The nexus 7 (2012 with tegra) heats to 60C before throttling. The nexus 9 does try to dissepate the heat as quick as possible (lots of copper) and feels warmer.
Samsung devices are even worse, as they start throtteling even later.
The tegra k1 is a beast of a mobile processor (gpu and cpu).

Basically, this.
Hell, my N5 actually reboots during antutu due to thermal heat and heats up a lot during gaming.
Also, the reason it heats up when watching a video, do not forget a video has to be decoded to be displayed on the screen. Hardware decoding is less intensive but some still rely on software decoding wich will heat up and cpu in a matter of minutes. So even something as simple as watching a video can be CPU intensive depending on the decoder.
As for chrome, haven't had my N9 heat up during chrome sessions. Weird
Actually, the Nexus 9 manages as only Android device in my collection to stay completely cool in netflix HD streaming. 10% battery usage after 90 minutes. Compared to the other devices that use up at least 40% of battery during the same time.
One drawback is the 4:3 screen, which still makes my Note 10.1 beter for netflix (or movie viewing in general)... But the Nexus 9 is the only tablet I even consider using in portrait.
Same problem here, especially with Chrome. I've rooted my device, I don't know if that could have something to do with the heating...
Chrome Beta seems to have really helped with the heat issue on mine. I still get a lot of heat with gaming but that seems to be it.
The n9 was the first device I've ever had that heated up on me while browsing in chrome. This is NOT normal. I RMA'd it and picked up a shield instead... I don't know how these devices passed QA with all the issues they're having.
My personal opinion, is lollipop isn't quite ready and many apps aren't either. I'm waiting for all to be updated. The heating problem will, I'm sure, be taken care of.

Hopefully before black friday . The Sheild went up last year and I'm expecting it to do the same this year, not sure if I should go ahead and buy it or wait for the Nexus 9 to be fixed.

I noticed the other night a considerable warming by the camera area and all I was doing was browsing the Internet. So as I was using Chrome I stopped, and browsed with FireFox, the tablet cooled completely down. Even watching YouTube it was barely warm.
I think something is wrong with Chrome and it's causing a loop somewhere in the code ramping up the CPU causing it to use a lot of power and that equals waste heat.
Playing games also has the same effect, it ramps up the CPU. The CPU is probably rated to continue working up to quite a high temperature before it needs to slow itself down to allow to cool, but when that heat causes the case to become very hot, it should back off the speed and so keep itself cool a long time before it reaches any of it's own temperature maximums, the trouble is keeping the case cool means the CPU can't maintain high performance for very long, so what's the point of a fast CPU.
Really tablets are not the best designed devices for 3D type game playing, or anything really that needs to use a lot of CPU power over and above the occasional burst.
I wouldn't be surprised once all the benchmarks have been done and published, if a software updated doesn't fix the heat problem by throttling the CPU quicker, and running it with realistic performance characteristics that being sandwiched in a very thing plastic case with no vents or active cooling requires.
Regards
Phil
I second the chrome beta helping. I disabled regular chrome in app manager and installed the chrome beta and have had a significant boost in battery life and decrease in heat while browsing.
Mine only gets warm with heavy games

Do you still notice any warmth using Chrome Beta? Or is it relatively cool? I have tried both Chrome Beta and Dolphin, and I am still noticing a good amount of heat. It's actually cooler watching Netflix than it is doing any sort of browsing whatsoever.

Saturday when I switched to the Chrome beta for the first time the heat was the same as before. Yesterday and today it has been noticeably cooler. I'd say the tablet gets just warm enough to notice a difference from it's ambient temperature when using chrome beta. I've gotten slightly better battery life but i'm still only hitting 4 hours screen on time when I hit 15% battery which is about a 1 hour increase from before using chrome beta.
I think chrome is still in need of major optimization because as you said when I use youtube or netflix I get much better thermal and battery performance. I did notice today that chrome seems to be performing extremely well on page loads and interactivity with javascript elements etc. I threw as many complicated sites as I could at it and made sure to go to sites I that hadn't been cached before on the tablet and it was super fast. It actually impressed me with it's performance which I wasn't expecting. Now it just needs to get more battery efficient and it will be perfect.

Thanks for the details. It's a shame that browsing is so poorly optimized. That's my main purpose for a tablet. I've just been on Dolphin the last hour and yep, heat is still pretty strong and my battery has gone down quite a bit. But before that, I was running Netflix for several hours just to test, and was up to about 5 hrs SOT. But I typically don't watch much Netflix, so that doesn't reflect real-world usage for me at all.
Yeah it's a little disappointing but the improvement I saw from chrome release and chrome beta is promising. My browsing experience today aside from heat and battery issues really made me like this device. The performance really blew me away. It felt more responsive than my i7 desktop.

I too find myself getting attached, despite these issues. It's a really smooth tablet experience :good:

Lagging and battery drain largely solved

I got the device on 15/11 and it's very frustrating that the device stutters a lot and battery drains fast. Updated the device and tried turned off most things i don't need but still can't fix the problem. Compared to the nexus 5 on lollipop i have, the phone is much more responsive, and the only setting different is that the phone does not have encryption. So i tried erasing everything and remove encryption, now the tab performs much better in terms of battery life and speed. This is especially obvious when browsing with chrome. Everything stock except rooted. Can others who still have this problem try and confirm the results?
Nope, no encryption- still not great performance. Likely just rebooting your tablet would have given you the same results. I would bet if you start doing the same things for a while, let ram fill up, CPU start getting hot and throttling, your issues will come right back.
Possible, but so far I have used for 1 whole day and still it's very responsive. Previously I have rebooted the device and the problem comes back in a few hours. If it's not encryption, perhaps it's the factory reset which works?

Very possible, clearing cache and rebooting. I'm not saying unencrypting does nothing at all, and it certainly doesn't HURT performance(besides in database and sqlite-encrypted tablets seem to do better at these actions). But I've had 3 nexus 9's, all without encryption and encrypted, and battery is bad either way. It hasn't gotten better when not encrypted on any of the 3- so its not device specific. Performance seems to be close either way, with a majority of the time being smooth(with occasional small stutters and lag), and then stints of horrible lag, stutters and redraws. The nexus 9 I have now has been running with no encryption for over a week, and I've certainly still had these performance problems and pretty horrible battery life while web browsing.

Gaming help

Hello everyone, I need some help. So i Have a verizon htc one max running CM13 and my phone sucks when it comes to gaming or anything that requires a lot of power. When I'm gaming, my phone will get super hot very quickly and will start to lag. This even happens with the battery option on performance. Actually, the performance option doesn't really seem to have any impact on performance. Now my main focus is gaming, because thats when i encounter the problem the most, however, i do sometimes encounter it when running multiple apps at the same time. Like listening to music while browsing the internet and facebook.
I guess my point is, my phone seems to heat up and struggle when running multiple apps or playiung games. Is there anyway to fix this? I love my max but it kinda sucks now. Thanks for the help.

Question Overheating battery.

Hello guys any of you are getting heating issues with this phone?
Under light use of YouTube, Whatsapp, chrome, the area near the rear camera starts getting warm. I checked many times and I've been getting a constant 33-36C of temperature with just normal browsing, no games. GPS is off, Bluetooth is off, 5g is off, dark mode, etc.
Is this a common issue or do I have a hardware problem with this particular unit? Thanks
That's where the processor is, below the cams, above the battery.
Keep brightness at 50% or lower.
Don't use while charging.
Find the apps using excessive battery. Check their settings, try clearing cache and/or data.
Cloud backup apps are prime suspects. Uninstall or disable bloatware. If you have WhatsApp, FB, etc installed... take out the trash.
Try disabling power management or vice versa.
Scan with Malwarebytes.
If you did any major OTA firmware updates, factory reset. Otherwise ferret out the culprits without a factory reset as the issue will likely reoccur.
Recheck all settings. Try rolling back factory loaded apps including system apps to their factory load versions. Or try updating them, one at a time.
Play with it...
I installed the the 12.5.6 update, then it was heating up like crazy. Just did a factory reset now and it's "cool, stays at 31-30c
Is that a good temp range?
I also haven't uninstalled de Xiaomi bloatware, gonna do that next
Thanks
Depends on the ambient temperature. 10-20°F above ambient temperature at idle would be in a normal range. I look at current draw to get a better idea. I want to see my Note 10+ at idle drawing approximately 230 ma with no prolonged high spikes and low spikes going down to 50-70 ma range. This reflects the cpu usage.
I want to see about 7-8%@hr when using browser and 10-13%@hr streaming vids. When not in use with tap on AOD I want to see .5%@hr or less, phone and internet on.
Each device is different but you want to develop what is a normal baseline for your device. If the baseline spikes for no apparent reason you know something's acting up. I use Accubattery's history log to watch discharge and charge cycles ie battery % per hr.
If my OS is running fast, stable and fulfilling its mission... I let it be. Lol, my phone hasn't been updated in over 2 years, current OS load is over 1.5 yo with no issues. Updates introduce new variables and many times issues that need time and trouble to resolve. Malware on the other hand has never been a serious issue for me even with outdated firmware. I go with what works best in the real world.
Sometimes updates do fix serious issues and are worth it but they can puke all over you just as easily
