Accidental 4.5.4 downloaded, not installed, how to delete? - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 3rd Gen.
As the tittle says. While trying to use Kingroot on 4.5.2, I managed to leave the Wifi on long enough for the OTA 4.5.4 to download. Where is it and how do I remove the file? Tks

You'll need to wipe your /cache partition. But, I don't think you'll be able to get into recovery before it automatically tries to install the update at boot.
I'm not quite sure how you should go about doing this, but I'd take a look at some of these links:
https://stackoverflow.com/a/10829600
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2580269
@ONYXis might be able to help.

Highly unlikely you will be able to prevent it from installing. I had the same issue a few months back. Every time I powered the Kindle on, it went straight to update. Good luck, but I'd say just take the update, and wait for a way to root, or downgrade path.

Thanks for the reply! ... I did manage to load Safestrap 4.0.1 but unfortunately I can't seem to mount to load a bin. I can see the kindle in device manager but doesn't show up in explorer. Any thoughts?

I'm not quite getting what you're saying. If you're already in Safestrap, then you should be able to wipe /cache from there.

[Q] Did I just brick my phone by messing with framework-htc-res.apk??

Sorry for the double post, but I was afraid this old thread I posted in originally may not get attention since the subject line is not quite on point.
My original post is here --
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42069716&postcount=49
I guess since I can still get to my bootloader and theoretically hit factory reset, I may not really be bricked. But I'd really love to find a fix other than factory reset. At the moment -- when I try to boot to the phone, it goes through the initial white HTC screen and then just stops on the Android eye screen (like this http://static1.businessinsider.com/...-is-what-the-boot-up-animation-looks-like.jpg )
Anyone??
Many many thanks from a dumbass newb.

I don't want to offer a fix because I'm sure someone has a better way, but have you thought about just flashing a new ROM at this point? Cyanogenmod, Venom, Avatar, Pacman rom now. Some good choices.

I was thinking about that, but couldn't even figure out how to get a ROM onto my phone to flash.
Forgot I could use TWRP to force it to USB mount to my computer and get it on there like that. Just flashed Viper, but now after rebooting I'm stuck on the white HTC quietly brilliant splash screen (I don't even get to the red Droid eye screen where I was freezing before).
Ugh.
I guess maybe I need to find a stock HTC Sense ROM to flash first???

The ROM probably flashed fine. You have to pull the boot.img out of the zip and flash it via fast boot since you're not s-off:
Fasboot flash boot boot.img
Also, when you get everything going be sure to remember to make a backup. And you should do so before flashing anything or modifying system files.

Well...
I'm still screwed apparently.
Now I'm freezing on the HTC-quietly-brilliant white screen with the "This build is for development purposes only..." message beneath it whenever I try to do a regular reboot. So I'm basically still stuck with bootloader/TWRP only right now even after trying to flash a ROM.

You're trying to flash venom right? Download the newest venom. Open the zip with WinZip or other application. Pull out the boot IMG. Also, go download TWRP version 2.3.3.0 since newer builds have issues with aroma installers. Flash that recovery. Wipe data, cache, system. Flash venom ROM. Reboot to bootloader and in fastboot flash the boot IMG.
TWRP 2.3.3.0 here:

And now I'm really kind of nervous --
I just decided that this wasn't worth crying over since my phone wasn't all the customized anyway, so I just tried doing a factory reset and that failed, too.
If anyone wants to help walk me out of this mess (any outcome that leads to a usable phone would be brilliant), I would be all ears. It seems like I can't even get to recover now, so all I've got is the bootloader/USB connection to my PC to use fastboot there.
Many many thanks in advance!

I was able to get 2.3.3.0 on my phone via fastboot and can run that version of the recovery now.
However, I'm not sure how to flash a ROM at this point since I cannot get it onto my phone.
(when I use TWRP to tell my phone to mount as USB storage, the SD card is no longer an option -- I cannot select it -- and Windows cannot see the phone as a drive anymore except to ask if I want to format it to FAT32... which I'm assuming I should not do)
Can I somehow get it done via the bootloader screen using fastboot ?or adb? to get the VIPERlte_2.2.0.zip ROM package to my phone?

No reason to be nervous. If your bootloader is unlocked you're fine. Follow steps 1-12 in this post to get a functional stock ROM on your phone. I realize the post doesn't sound like it relates to your issue, but the instructions should generally be viewed as "how to get your phone back to normal".

I'm going to try now, however the thing that really made me nervous was that when I tried to do a factory reset via TWRP last night (step 1 of the process you just suggested), I got a fail message from TWRP:
"Factory Reset Complete
Failed"
then down below several of the lines say
E:Unable to mount '/sdcard'
E:Unable to recreate android secure folder.
E:Unable to mount '/sdcard' during GUI startup.
E:Unable to mount when trying to read settings
E:Unable to mount internal storage
I'm surprised no one has suggested, ya know, for him to run an RUU.
Yeah. OP, you should do that

As I said, I'm all ears.
Should I run the RUU to get back to stock/relocked? Or is there something else out there that will allow me to stay unlocked?
You can RUU and then do the whole song and dance to get back to unlocked. If you go S-OFF you shouldn't have to worry about re-unlocking the bootloader.
You can either use an sdcard reader to put the RUU zip in the root of your SD as PJ53IMG.zip or put your phone into bootloader mode run
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Once at the black HTC screen
Run
fastboot flash zip <nameofruu>.zip
It might error saying something about main version or if you have supercid it'll complain about that too. Just run the same command again
fastboot flash zip <nameofruu>.zip
And it should take and flash then entire thing and get you back to a working state.

No, OP, don't do that. I'm tired of reading "run an RUU" when it is not necessary. I posted a perfectly reasonable solution that would leave samstein66 with an unlocked bootloader, a very clean factory reset stock ROM, root, and custom recovery. Telling someone to run the RUU leaves them with a locked device which potentially still requires a factory reset to get as close to default settings as when it came from the factory. Now they get the joy of re-unlocking their bootloader, which for our non-htcdev-supported phone means sensitive processes that can mess up a device if not done carefully.

In TWRP, under the mount menu, are you able to use the Mount USB feature and see the internal and microsd storage on your computer?

No, I cannot select those. I can only select cache, data, etc. and when it tries to mount, my computer cannot recognize the drive as H: like it normally would when USB mounted. It does see that the device is trying to mount as H, but that's where I get the Windows message saying I need to format the drive to being able to recognize it. Since I wasn't sure what to do there, I played it safe and went with not formatting (since I didn't know exactly what would get formatted).

I agree if u wiped your stock slot without a backup or a good rom to flash on it and you attempted to reboot after you wiped the system in stock...sorry but as far as I know there is no fix for you at least not as of yet. That's why safestrap was developed so you could apply an extra partition to boot system and data from to eliminate screwing up the stock os because currently we do not have a working fastboot or unlocked bl... again thanks to amazon locked ecosystem and lack of thorough research...another warranty claim.. another brick on the wall
Yeah, I haven't seen a response, so need more info. What exactly did you wipe & how? Did you, or do you, have safestrap installed? Sometimes the issue is that it mounts system to perform functions & never unmounts, so you can;t install anything until you use adb to remount or reboot. I need to know exactly what you did & exactly what you had installed & what version of FW you were using to tell you anything.
Thanks all for reply. I hope some one can help me

If you had to read the fire hydrant thread at last at least the last page or two you would know that it is a nonfunctioning Rom.. But if you still have safestrap cycling when you reboot there may be a way to push Hashcodes stock base to SDcard ... Why would you attempt to install anything to your stock slot? That is why we have safestrap because we have no fast boot ability . Or if you did not wipe your stock slot you should be able to activate it and boot up stock.

Fire HD 6 Wiped Necessary Files After Factory Reset

HI guys,
I had a successful root of my Fire HD 6. I tried to do a factory reset and somehow I think I wiped necessary files from the device. I can still get to TWRP, but looking through the files I dont see anything. I see the structure but no files. Is there anyway I can get a flashable stock rom or another rom for this? I searched a bit but could not find anything.
Any help will be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Jesse
EDIT: Just looked ar it hooked to my computer and the only directory is TWRP
EDIT: I tried flashing 5.2.0_stock_recovery_only.zip" and now I lost TWRP

Awesome! This should keep you in straight jacket before you do some more damage
With 5.2.0 recovery working (?), you are all set to sideload 4.5.3 and root it again:

Should have been clear. After I tried the recovery, I lost TWRP but I am still stuck at the amazon logo. I think I might be screwed now... haha
EDIT: I tried a 4.5.2 bin that I had but it wont pass verification. Downloading the one you referenced and will try to side load that. Am I going down the wrong path? Seems like I should be able to get a stock package and sideload it over adb right?
UPDATE:Just sideloaded the one you lined. Seems like it worked. As soon as I started it, it forced an update though. Thank you! I think I am in a good spot to root again.

Well, you have to make sure that you disable OTAs right after you sideload 4.5.3, or it will immediately replace 4.5.3 with 4.5.5 which is not rootable directly !

FireOS does not like alternative launchers. While experiences vary few (if any) work without modifying system files which you really don't want to do. Best option to go with a different rom. Your choices and the tools needed to pull it off will depend on the version of FireOS currently on you HDX. Nexus v2/V4 and CM11/12 can run nearly every launcher in the Google Play store w/o incident.

Edit: try installing Apex or Nova from apkmirror which sometimes can help regain temporary control so you can remove google now. If you can get past the language screen try enabling adb access (usb debug) in the settings panel. You'll need that if you loose control of the UI. If possible avoid use of the home button which will invoke the stock launcher and bring you back to the language screen. You'll then have to reinstall Apex/Nova to regain control. This can be a tough nut to crack on FireOS hence the alternative ROM recommendation.
Long shot: try "Home Switcher" by twisted apps to set the launcher of your choice. This saved my butt on more than a few occasions on various devices with limited options - but it's old and may not work on a HDX.
yeah i just fixed by factory reset via adb. thanks anw
one more question: can i install safetrap 4.0.1 when in 13.3.2.4, my kindle has only been rooted and doesnt have safetrap?????????

No, and you'd be far better off by downgrading to 3.1.0, installing TWRP, optional updating bootloader to 3.2.3.2, and unlocking the bootloader then.
Take a look at this thread.
With 3.2.4 you must use Safestrap 3.75, other option would be to update to 4.5.2, root, and install Safestrap v4, but TWRP & unlocked bootloader would open the wonderland of HDX ROMs for you.
install safetrap 3.75 - factory reset- copy 3.1.bin to storage and update. is this the right step ro roll back to 3.1.0??????

No, install Safestrap 3.7.5, then follow the points mentioned here, i.e. flash the rollback image to the stock slot, do a factory reset, etc. - Keep WLAN off/flight mode enabled at all times! You don't want to get updated by Amazon.

Yes, the rollback file is just a 3.2.4 with edited version info, so it identifies as 3.0.9 in order to get the "update" to 3.1.0 working, which is a downgrade then of course.
After the downgrade to 3.1.0 you can install TWRP, and flash the 3.2.3.2 bootloader update via TWRP, then unlock the bootloader.
Yeah thank you. I just had it yesterday and had never used any devices like it before. Fire os is such a problem for me

You need to go with Safestrap v3.7.5 with that version of FireOS. SS v4 will brick your device. One installed you only have one (excellent) rom choice: Nexus v2.0.5. I can't post links from my current location but you can find the relevant threads in the HDX Android Development forum.
You can also downgrade FireOS, flash twrp and then unlock your bootloader. More upfront work but ultimately gives access to the full complement of HDX roms including Nexus v4, cm11 and two variants of cm12. Also vastly superior recovery capability should something go wrong.

What do you mean by "full wipe"? You were supposed to do a factory reset, i.e. the standard wipe. If you wiped system, your HDX is bricked.

Confirmed - there is no known recovery from this situation with a locked bootloader. Sorry for your loss.

Amazon will not repair the device. However, you may be offered a one-time exchange for a refurbished unit if it still within warranty and the purchaser is in good standing. Simply state the device attempted to upgrade and got stuck at the grey Kindle logo (factually true). No need to go into specifics.
I just bought it on 14/8/2015 and it still looks new 100℅. Do all devices sold have one year warranty? P/s i'm from germany

Standard Amazon device warranty is 12 months. You should contact Amazon to confirm eligibility and return/exchange logistics.

Axon 7 stuck in TWRP, need help getting back to stock

Hi all,
I recently got a new Axon 7 (A2017U) and wanted to root it just like my old G3. I tried following DrakenFX's instructions (Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/wip-axon-7-root-bootloader-unlokced-t3441204), but I got lost. I ended up with a password being requested at the android startup screen. In a panic, I clicked Format Data when I got back into TWRP, that made it worse and I went into EDL to see if that might help. Eventually I got back into TWRP and that's where I am now, desperately trying to get my new phone working again. All the threads I read only add another layer of confusion. Would someone be willing to walk me through the steps of fixing my phone? I really don't want to RMA/have $400 to go down the drain. I'd own you a big one.

Hi,
so you have access to the TWRP. Thats good. Do you have access to a stock ROM from your manufacturer? In case yes, you could simply flash the stock.
For this, the rom has to be on a SD card or on the internal memory of the phone.
In TWRP go to "Install", than navigate to the file and swipe to install (it comes a zip file).

I'm looking for one. Some threads pointed to an OTA update that ZTE has on their site. However, when I try to install things on TWRP, I get an error about "dev/block/sde14" being read-only. (It sometimes says "sde13" too.)

I am far from being a pro. I once had the problem that I was caught in bootloop and could not install a new rom. But I was able to re-flash TWRP (via Minimal adb and fastboot) and than everything was fine.
Maybe someone else can comment on that. On your own risk...
Just a tip. Never panic and press any button
