Possible to Migrate the SOHO BL Unlock? - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

After excitedly clicking on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hd/7-development/unlock-kfsowi-bootloader-unlock-t3262770
I discovered that my BL-locked THOR is apparently not a 3rd gen? I don't know, the model naming convention for kindles is a disaster.
Anyways, the local Pawn America has a literal stack of fire HDXs for $25 each in perfect condition. I guess they don't sell well.
I'm willing to try some experimental attempts at migrating the SOHO BL unlock; the discoverer mentioned that it *might* be cross compatible. Would I be wasting $25 if I made the attempt or are the BLs similar enough to warrant it? Anything I should know about THOR in terms of adjusting this unlock method?

Soho is Kindle Fire HD (2 gen) which means it is the second generation of HD series, the first generation of Kindle Fire HD is codenamed TATE,
here, check this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2593334
From what I know the last gen of fires received great support from the devs, instead the HDX series didn't, as of the unlock I frankly don't know

TL;DR I never said it "might" be cross compatible. I said it definitely isn't.
Let me explain this. There was the Kindle Fire otter. Then came the Kindle Fire (2nd Generation) otter2, Kindle Fire HD (2nd Generation) tate and Kindle Fire HD 8.9" (2nd Generation) jem. Then came the Kindle Fire HD (3rd Generation) soho, Kindle Fire HDX (3rd Generation) thor and Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" (3rd Generation) apollo. But the Kindle Fire HDX is completely different from any Kindle Fire that came before it. Unlike its predecessors which were powered by the TI OMAP4 platform, it's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon. Android generally uses the LK bootloader, designed for Qualcomm devices and licensed under the MIT license. The MIT license imposes no requirements on the use of the software. The OMAP4 platform does not generally use LK and most devices use Das U-Boot instead. Since U-Boot is licensed under the GPL license, companies using it are forced to release the source code, along with any modifications made to it. There are many uses of untrusted input in Amazon's verification procedures in the bootloader source code which have been exploited to unlock all the devices in the Kindle Fire (2nd Generation) range, and the Kindle Fire HD (3rd Generation). Since the MIT license does not require Amazon to release the source code, we cannot inspect their verification procedures as easily as we can with U-Boot, therefore an exploit is harder to find.

Am I able to install the Play Store and basically convert this tablet to an Android?

I'm debating between a Kindle Fire HDX, HD or a Nexus 7. I prefer the physical looks and the internals of the Kindles but I definitely prefer the Android OS and Google Play Store. Are the Kindles able to be modified to get the latest version of Android Lollipop and have the Google Play Store installed onto them?

new generation Fire HD: Currently no.
4th generation Fire HDX 8.9: Currently no, until rooting method or bootloader unlock for FireOS 4.5.2 exist
3rd generation Kindle Fire HDX 7 or 8.9, shipped with FireOS 1X.3.X.X: Updates have to be disabled subsequently before Wifi is activated the first time to prevent the device is upgraded to 1X.4.X.X. Then: Rootable, Jellybean (Android 4.2) based HDX Nexus ROM available through the Android Development forum, usable with Safestrap.
3rd generation Kindle Fire HDX 7 or 8.9, shipped with FireOS 1X.4.X.Y: Currently, rollback to older software has to be initiated by Amazon (several threads) before, until rooting method or bootloader unlock for FireOS 4.5.2 exist
older generation Kindle Fire HD variants: unlocks have been carried out, complete replacement of FireOS possible. Includes stable Kitkat releases and alpha Lollipop releases.

The only reason to purchase a Kindle (IMO) is if you are a member of Amazon Prime and you want to take advantage of all the free content that comes with Prime. Otherwise, you are better off with the Nexus.
Kindle is currently running a basterdized v ersion of Kit Kat. They will probably upgrade to Lollipop (which I love on my Nexus 5). However, the new UI won't make much of a difference to Kindle users except in the way that notifications are handled.
Having said that, the Kindle is an excellent, although purposely limited, tablet. At this time, newer versions of Fire O/S cannot be rooted. Thus, no PlayStore. Frankly, I only want it to complete licensing of Bubble UPnP.

Is Saturn/Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" 4th gen (2014) rootable?

Guys,
Quick question:
Is Saturn/Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" 4th gen (2014) rootable or not?
(Ancient wisdom says 4.1.1 & later 4.5.1 are not rootable)
What firmware Saturn is shipped with?
For some reason, I cannot make forum search work at all, sorry.
You're right. Since the 4th generation HDX 8.9" comes with FireOS 4, there's no way to root it at this moment.
EncryptedCurse,
Thanks for prompt response! :good:
The only reason I asked, reading this thread it was unclear to me, whether Saturn comes fresh with 3.X or 4.X OS.

[Q] Kindle HDX 8.9 4th Gen

One question, I spoke to customer service on Amazon, They stated the 4th Gen kindles HDX 8.9(2.5 snap dragon) and new HD6 and HD7 models have OTG support enabled....
Is this true? And 3rd Gen (2.2 snapdragon) which I have, it is disabled.
All over the net im seeing disabled all the time.
And I haven't seen anyone here speaking about OTG support at all.
They might've misunderstood your question. I'm pretty sure they don't.
Amazon love to force you to use bandwidth and their cloud storage.so they do this on purpose. Along with the no SD slot has been a trend with companies that are affiliated with each other..
I have the hd6 and from what I remember otg is functional. I can confirm this evening.
The hd6 does support otg.

Kindle Fire HD 7 3rd Generation Software Rollback

Hi Everyone,
I've been trying to figure out if this is possible or not but I called amazon and had them rollback the software on my kindle fire hd 3rd generation to 11.3.2.6 is it possible to root now?
Wrong forum, look elsewhere for HD support. This forum is for HDX models.

Can I put Android on my mothers Kindle Fire HD?

My mother has a Kindle Fire HD (3rd Generation) 7inch I believe? Running Fire OS 4.5.5.
I was wondering if Android can be put on this type of Kindle because the Fire OS is so bland and boring with nothing more really than the amazon and kindle store.
If it is possible I would need something that is the most stable. It doesn't have to be the most updated version of Lolipop with all the frills. Just basic or flashy enough that it runs smoothly with the least amount of problems.
Read the rules: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2487836
And then use the search.
