Swollen battery caused by heat? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I do rom flashing and oc on cpu too, the phone sometimes get very warm. Just wanna ask is the heat affecting the battery to get 'fat' ?

Im not sure but what you can do is get a kernel which can undervolt and therefore you can reduce the amount of heat it produces.

Not really recommended to undervolt unless you're really an advanced user. Underclock is safer. Heat reduces battery life overall..

Overclocking Undervolting

Hi,
i just want to know should i be worried about any long-term or short-term consequences regarding overclocking 1.0 to 1.1 and undervolting max -100.
Over clocking can and will shorten the life of your hw. Undervolting for overclockers is to help offset that and get more battery. Straight undervolting is for users who need most from battery and will not shorten hw lifespan, helps with with battery and possibly life of battery since current will be sucked slower from it and it heating up less.

You can uv and oc at the same time. It helps the temps and offsets some of the heat w/o an oc. I highly recommend uv'ing if you oc. Me, personally though, i really don't need oc, but i am trying to be patient for stable build of cyan7. I'm more than satisfied with my battery life right now so i don't want to run into possible problems you might run into flashing a custom kernel. The uv and oc might work, but wifi, bluetooth or something else could be broken and then you have to troubleshoot that, blah blah blah. If you flash a custom kernel, you should stress test your uv's and test all the features of your phone.

About OC Kernels and Battery Life..

I see alot of folks asking about over clocked kernels best combo and what not. Also they are asking if a over clocked kernel is out and has good battery life.
No over clocked kernel will ever bring excellent battery life lol. Truth is the more you up the cpu the more juice it will need. The stock kernel was set within standard speeds due to keeping things smooth and keep the battery life decent also keeping the heat down on the cpu... If you mess with things you will get faster speeds at the cost of you battery life and heat.
I am not saying not to use them you just can't expect a over clocked kernel to give you better battery life.. Also turning your brightness down will help save battery... Using WiFI will also help if your wireless signal isn't strong enough in your area. Don't run a antivirus program on your phone either lol this will also suck your battery down.. These are linux based phones.

Just so everyone knows, the power consumption of your phone uses a standard formula:
power = voltage^² * frequency
So for every bit of voltage you go up, power consumption drastically rises. As you raise the frequency then power consumption rises, but you have to double your frequency to double your power drain.

Nice Most kernels do get things thumped up with that route on it. More push means more juice.

The best over clocking apps??

First off is this a good idea? can such small devices be over clocked in a safe way without risking damaging the hardware?
if yes which would you say was the best app for doing so?

A good idea... maybe, maybe not... it depends on what you want... higher scores in bench?A shorter battery life?A very very hot device while browsing or gaming (if you run at 1.8Ghz for example)?A little extra power for some apps/games?
With overclocking a little (1.5/1.6Ghz) I noticied that some apps open a little faster and the genera UI is a little more responsive...
There is always a (little) risk to overclock our phones, generally due to overheat but also some CPU's can't handle high overclock.
For me I don't remember reading someone burn her CPU with overclocking but...
There are still some software protections before to burn a CPU (thermal throttling, CPU temp limit before shutdown, etc...).
Obiously the duration of life could be reduced mainly if you always run at 1.8Ghz with playing games... So the "safe" way would be no overclock or a little overclock like 1.5Ghz... For you to test and decide...
For the apps: SetCpu, System Tuner... there is a bunch on the Play Store.Just for the CPU settings I would say SetCpu.
For me i will never overclock my cpu. Just install siyah kernel and it's pretty smooth in games. Overclocking will damage your cpu and maybe loose some of the performance.
I can't see the need on this device, I might experiment with uv, maybe even underclocking, but as above, super smooth on siyah, and Slim Rom

Talking about battery life i installed darkys rom 3 onto my i9300 and the battery life is already suffering a loss of maybe around 25%. In saying that over clocking will only cause me to lose even more so ill leave it for now

Overclocking won't damage your CPU unless you set crazy voltages, or let it overheat. Also, it won't lose performance... that's crazy talk. Only if it overheats will it throttle, but that only happens on large clock rates like 1.8GHz or if you're in a hot environment.
I had my old LG GT540 overclocked with no heat problems mind that was only a 600mhz cpu, had it up to 825mhz.
But we already have a powerful cpu in this phone, foe now I don't see the need to overclock.

The best app depends a lot on your kernel and device. For example, for my Galaxy S2 the best OC was with TegraK Overclock.
With my Xoom CPU Tuner is still the best.
With the S3 I suppose CPU tuner would be alright as well, but I haven't had the urge to OC it, because I find SiyahKernel still quite unstable in the S3.
You need an overclockable kernel in order to OC your phone.
As for damages, it is hard to tell if they are permanent, but picture this: your battery will have to be recharged more often, because it will drain faster. Since batteries have a limited lifespan which depends on how many charge cycles they go through, the more often you discharge/charge them, the shorter their lifespan will be.
Also, there is no telling what kind of ill-effects the added heat can do to the phone. It may be totally harmless, but it may also affect the quality of the display, since the added heat will be right underneath the screen.
The lifespan of the CPU will be shortened: instead of being able to work well for 20 years, it will work well for 18, 17, 15, but more than enough time for us to already have replaced our S3 for organic, intradermal smartphones!

[Q] Isn't Overclocking Android drains more battery power?

First of all, I am totally new to this forum.(I mean as an registered user)
Before that I always had the thing from the forum what I needed.
Now here is my question,
If i overclock the processor speed of my android device to a higher position, isn't it gonna take more battery power than usual?

overclocking is going to drain your battery obviously.

My phn's original capacity is 1 Ghz
How much overclocking can keep my battery level fair and also give smoother performance without causing me any hardware issue?

Power consumption = Voltage x Voltage x cpufreq x some constant for your device. If you OC (raise the cpufreq) you will have more power consumption and more heat generation because most of the power is dissipated as heat and the heat is what damages your cpu. It is probably impossible to kill your cpu in one go, because your device should shut off when it begins to over heat (this will look like a random reboot). But you will slowly degrade the over all performance of your cpu and eventually you get to a point where you see a lot of random reboots. So if you decide to OC you probably want to also undervolt as well. This is because power consumption (and heat) scale with the square of the applied voltage. One rule of thumb is that your maximum cpufreq is actually determined by the voltage. For example, my cpu is rated to be stable at 1 GHZ and 1200 mV, so when I OC and UV, I scale the cpufreq as high as I can go, as long as the voltage is not greater than 1200 mV, for me this is 1.5 GHz.
Also remember that your cpu governor will have a big effect on your power consumption and it is probably doing a good job keeping the cpu running in the low range of the cpufreq table, so you are unlikely to see big effects of OC or UV on real life battery consumption.
every chipset is different, even though the brand and model is the same. noone can guarantee you any safe value to overclock.

Overclocking is not the only thing you have to think of in order to improve your phone's overall performance. The most important issue for me is choosing the right kernel and applying the right governor + I/O scheduler. From my experience with Mini (i have tried ALL available kernels and most of ROMs) I can surely say that now with my phone (ICS .587, custom ROM + kernel) overclocked to 1.5 GHz battery with minimal use (20 mins calls, 40 mins WiFi per day) lasts at least 60 hours. When I bought my phone (GB, no OC, all stock) battery was struggling to stay alive for 24 hours with the same minimal use. Conclusion: first pick the right kernel and ROM, then OC.

Is there any rom / kernel you could recommend for top output for 24hour constant calculation. (Specifically the "boinc" app)
I would like max CPU output and i wouldn't want heat throttling since temperature and battery wont matter.
also freezing would suck since i probably wont be looking at it much so i might not notice for a few days.
Also i have a stock battery and stock charger (eu 210). I wouldnt want the drain to overpower the charger leading to downtime.
Ive got neatrom with the roms included kernel but it seems to lower cpu frequencies quite aggressively.
thinking about slimsaber
also with most governors i was getting 800mhz which was kind of annoying. Performance gov would reduce to 200 after a while, i believe because of heating.
Finally slp stays at 1200 and doesnt seem to downclock. Still i feel there is room for improvement.
