Hi, is there any fix for CM13 Marshmallow for External SD writing of apps such as ADM for example not being able to save under any directory on External SD? Thanks.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Free mobile app
I have the same issue. Old methods don't work anymore. I tried sdcardfix from market as well as manually editing the permissions platform.xml . The permissions must have changed under Android 6.0. There is no entry for WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE anymore. There is a similar entry with WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE. I tried to insert WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: no luck. I tried to edit WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE: no luck. It has no effect on Titanium backup being not able to write to external sd.
The strange thing is, that ES file explorer has no problems writing to any folder.
I have exactly the same problem. Es FileExplorer has permission to write on external sd card. But other Apps not. With PowerAMP i can listen to mp3s on exernal SD, but when i want to to edit id3tags, it says "no permission to write". And my Camera App cant save photos on external SD Card.
And MyPhoneExplorer has the same problem.
Galaxy S3, CM13
Same Problem here: Navigon cannot download any maps to SD Card and replies enter SD Card, every app which wants to use the external sd Card just uses the intern Memory, others where you cannot Change Location just hang up... sad...
Sadly same problem for me. I'm a bit surprised, though, that some people claim to not have this problem even tough it looks like a permission issue which should be the same for anyone.
External SD card is read only for me for most Apps.
CM File Manager is able to write on it with Root access.
For Navigon to install maps you have to create a folder on internal card named Navigon.
After maps installation you can move that folder to the external card.
Move it back to internal for any additional map.
That's the only way to get it working for Navigon.
But for many other Apps I'm just as lost as you.
I guess we have to wait for Apps to be updated and working with CM 13
I'm using different Custom ROM with Marshmallow 6.0.1,. and I have the same problem, ES File explorer writes on my external microsd, Snap Camera same also to external sdcard, but my backup app App Backup & Restore can't backup to microsd even if I did that in Kitkat and Lollipop.
I did also that, like in Kitkat
Edit the file at:
system/etc/permissions/platform.xml
to add <group gid="media_rw" /> in the following location like so:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="media_rw" />
</permission>

... but no success
Simply send the developing team of apps an mail to update their apps to make it compatible with Android 6
I got some responses that many knows about the problem and working on it.
Small teams or developers needs a little more time, so be patient.
Or search for an alternative app that will work with Android 6
It's not a problem from the developer, I think it is a problem with MarshMallow 6... Even if I tried to delete photos stored on external sdcard, the stock Gallery app didn't delete them... The only app which deteled them was ES File Explorer
Hey Guys,
Any news? I become insane because of this F***KING write management!
And can't ask 40+ app developer for fixing googles mistake.
Cheers in advance
There is no work around. It is hardcoded to the os. Xposed mods might be able to do something about it but xposed is dodgy.

I don't mind using xposed to fix it, because It's a very annoying bug, at least, there could be a module to force apps to use the CM file manager to grant permissions to write on the sd (the method used by apps like ES file explorer, cinema FV5 camera, etc...)
ES-Explorer has been mentioned several times here as 'working', but try to edit&save a file on external sdcard...
Wrote it to the autors yet, but no reaction so far.

Hi, cant solve all your problems but the titanium backup fix is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64281772&postcount=2
I have found an app called "apps2sd" by vicky 'something or other, cant remember'. It has a light blue icon. It does folder mounting and works ok for me so far. Root is required.
The proper foldermount app no longer works on 6.0. It might not do exactly what you want but it should help a lot.

Just convert/install TB as a system app and you can backup to external SD.
How about to other apps? What is the solution?

I wanted to ask how people manage their storage on their A101 efficiently. I have noticed that my system storage fills up as I install new apps and I have to manually move each to internal storage to keep the A101 running smoothly. Some apps cant be moved it seems.
Is there someway of getting apps to automatically install to internal storage to make life a little easier?
If you have root (Archangel is fine) you can use Move2SD Enabler. It is available on the market. Read instructions from the link below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720739
as you can't move apps with widgets or system apps, as they won't work properly. It has saved me lots of space on my A70.

Try App 2 SD from the market
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd&feature=search_result
You can only move apps which android allows to be moved with this, but it will tell you if you can move an app when you install new ones.

Enables read and write access to the external storage for all apps.

at sammobile.com: Android 4.3 on Galaxy S4 Google Edition breaks SD card writing for apps...
This app has no user interface. Enable it in Xposed - reboot - done.
What does this app?
It adds the group media_rw to WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE. This is done at runtime, the file platform.xml itself will not be changed. So /system has to not be writable
IMPORTANT
Xposed needs root access for installation and requires Android 4.0.3 and up

Play Store: http://tinyurl.com/nnajr7f
Xposed Repository: http://tinyurl.com/ptgjr53

Why this app? Editing platform.xml and add media_rw to WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE is boring.

Thanks for your effort!
I am on HTC One Max with stock root 4.4.2. However, this module doesn't seem to work. for Example, Titanium backup still cannot access the ext_sd for back up. Although ES File explorer can write to the ext_sd (even before I install your module), but before and after this module installed, I still cannot "move" file between directories INSIDE the ext_sd
Just let me know if anything I can help to get this working. It's not an option for HTC One Max to modify the Permission file, since after I modifying it, after reboot, all GAPP and some system process will FC on me. Once FC happened, only restoring of Permission file AND /data (from NAND backup) will get back (simple reboot/clear cache/Davlik won't work)
Thanks a lot!

Can you see any error messages by this module in the Xposed log? I've attached a version with debug output. The count of the gids should be first 0, then a bigger value X and later X+1.
Btw, I don't know if this module works for your device! In fact it hooks the permissions reading and simply add the group at runtime - so maybe you will have also the FCs too
Im sorry but im not seeing the purpose of this app. Is there something im not thinking or or missing? Does it allow moving apps to the sd for those of us on the gs4 rooted without updating? Or if not, what?
Thanks
good question, i'm also not quite sure about the exact purpose of the app - a description of possible uses would be nice.
considering the linked article and the posts above, it's probably related to that new sdcard behavior of android, where apps are not allowed to access content anymore that they have not created themselves; so if an app can't access the storage, this might help.

Thanks for the debug version, however, I didn't see anything related to HandleExternalStorage. (The log is long...). Anything I should note?
@bobstone & @Dunkel85
If all your non-system apps could write to the sd-card you dont need it. The new "protection" is not active for all devices. You also need this only if you don't want to modify platform.xml

What's up guys, I have a newbie question. I have searched everywhere for a definitive answer but what I find is conflicting.
Here is my situation.
I have Sprint Note 3, it was rooted on stock 4.3 rom. About 3 weeks ago I downloaded a mp3 organizer from the app store. I am an avid music lover and constantly download new music whenever something catches my eye or ear. I had exactly 2,249 songs on my N3, I ran the app and let it do its thing, once it finished my N3 rebooted and when it can back up I started the Native Player and it could not locate any music on my device. I checked a file explorer and sure enough my SD was wiped clean. All my music, photos, vids and docs GONE. And me like an idiot did not have it backed up. The phone even read insert SD. It totally f-ed up the SD. I uninstalled the app and everything pertaining to it from the device memory. I still have this SD in hopes that someone can retrieve the lost data on it.
I purchased a new 64g Samsung Class 10 SD and put it in, formatted it and everything was good. It still was not acting right. All the music I tried to put back on the SD kept getting erased soon after. So I odined a stock factory rom with no root hoping that an update to 4.4.2 would help in anyway to make the N3 work right. I soon found out about the write permissions issues in KK. I flashed the Kitkatkiller V4 (NC5) rom (thanks Josh Beach, great work) to get my phone nice after the new update and get the wifi hotspot. Now I want to add the write permissions to my platform.xml file but I get 2 different answers. 1 says to add <group gid="media_rw" /> to WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE and to WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE. The 2nd says to add the same to READ, WRITE & ACCESS_ALL_EXTERNAL_STORAGE.
Can anyone help me find a straight forward solution. I tried the sdfix app(s) and they all say no action required, but I still have the same write issues. Everything I download has to go straight to the device memory and when I move the file(s) it erases soon after. Idk what I need to do to resolve my issues. Can some please help me out with the write permissions and possibly a solution to gdtting my lost data from the old SD, it would be greatly appreciated.
On another note.... XDA is the best. Everything you need to know for a growing community. Thanks!!!!

You might try this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix&hl=en . Or you might try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKiEVDg2rb8
I've tried the SDFix app already and it tells me "no action required and that the phone already has the permissions" but I still have the same problem. I will try the recovery SW whem I get home later tonight.
Thank you.
If any one has any more suggestions please keep them coming.

I ran into an issue similar to this. There may be another way to fix it however I ended up re flashing via odin to stock, in stock recovery wipe data factory reset. Then I rooted and flashed custom recovery. Then I reformatted xternal sd card in computer, put sd in phone while still on stock rom. Once booted up I used sdfix and all was well again.
Thats basically what I did after getting the new 64g SD and still didn't work.

A question or two
What file explorer are you using? Have you tried mounting the system as RW, if not then this HAS to be done first before editing platform.xml file. Also, I had this same issue, as I'm sure everyone else did, when I flashed/upgraded to KK 4.4.2 and I only had to make the below edit in red (I added the line):
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="media_rw" />
</permission>
Of course you already know the platform.xml file is located at system/etc/permissions.
If all else fails, please try installing the Xposed framework then adding the module for this fix and see if that works.
I'm using Total Commander to edit the platform.xml file. I have not mounted as RW but I can still edit the file. Is that the only place I add the line to?

Upgrade a mounted app/game
Hi madmack,
and thanks for your work.
Just a question: when an app / game gets an updated version, I've to install it from scratch and delete the old one or foldermount finds new obb or data copied in android folder and move it automatically??
Thanks a lot, cheers.

Broken premium handling?
I have sent a bug report from the app via gmail, but I will try to be more verbose when describing the issue here, since I wrote it from a mobile phone. The issues concern premium version of this application (I could have easily write the binding script myself, but told myself what the heck, let's support the developer).
1. I have installed the free version from an account which I don't use for purchases on SG3 mini. So when I installed it through Google Play on the second device with the intention to go Premium later, it did install from this account anyway (and kept doing so), preventing me from buying the premium. This is the Play issue, but some apps let the user choose which account should be used for in-app billing. You may consider this.
2. When I paid for the premium from Xperia M, the payment succeeded and after 1-2 minutes the app became premium version. However, this did not happen on the SG3 mini, which keeps the "basic" version event after an reinstall and a hour after payment. When I try to buy the premium package ("Zakoupit premiovy balicek"), the account is the same and after clicking on Buy (Koupit) & Google Play, the Google Play gives me an error that I already own the entry (Chyba: Tuto polozku uz vlastnite) but pressing OK does not help, the premium features will not be activated and I get back to the "Buying" dialog.
Can you fix that?
EDIT: OK, one of the reviews mentions restarting the phone to get premium features in similar case. It helped, the app is now premium.
Foldermount stopped working
Today my z1 compact(kitkat) crashed and i had to use the off button near the sim slot. since then i cant mount any folders. I can still move data on sd and back but i cant mount anything. I tryed reinstalling, new folder pairs and reinstalling the sd fix. till there everything worked fine. Any Idea whats wrong?
Edit: im using 2.7 premium and the 4.4.4 Andoird with the .157 build
Can i mount the whole android/data directory as well as the whole android/obb directory onto my ext sd card, instead of individual app data or obb folders? Does it make any difference?
And another thing, what exactly do the green and white pins mean? If i leave a mounted directory's pin white, how is that bad for me?
Folder mount doesn't work anymore since lollipop update. App is shown as mounted, but app never works.. This is on my nvidia shields tablet wifi
Edit.. Got it to work.
paste data on external sd card
Why it isn't working when I paste data right in the external sd card and link folder with foldermount.
I can't paste the data on emmc (or internal sd) because I haven't enough space on it. When I touch the pin it colored green and I can see the data on the internal sd. But the game request for downloadin data from internet.

Do not see the android folders in foldermount
Hey all,
I'm really new to tablets and rooting. I have two Nextbook 7" that I just purchased for my kids to game on it comes with 4.4 kitkat on them. I used Kingo root to root them and made sure they got the SD fix so they could write to SD card. I did a ton of research into getting apps moved to the SD card to make room for more. I got foldermount and purchased the pro version. For whatever reason in storage/sdcard0 I don't see any sub folders. When using ES File Explorer I can see the android folder and it's sub folders of data and obb and the apps within them. In foldermount I don't see any of that. Spent quite a while trying to figure this out with no finds. Lots of internet searching didn't turn up anything for me either. I hear foldermount is the best so I'd like to get it working. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks
Has anyone found an easy fix for MIUI V5 (4.4.2) ?
I can mount a data folder but not an OBB folder.
Thanks a lot.
Hello.
I'm running Android 4.2.2 on an old ZTE Blade Q. I purchased the pro version of foldermount and the problem I keep running into is that I can't update my apps through play store - I get an insufficient space message each time I try to update an app.
I have most of my apps mounted on the external SD, all their pins are green and the internal SD storage status shows that 2.21 GB out of 1.3 GB is used.
What am I doing wrong here? I can't benefit from the app if I can't solve this. :/
FolderMount vs link2sd?
i have link2sd pro.. from what i have read FolderMount only allows me to move a small amount of files that link2sd supposedly cant.. i have never tried FolderMount but if it is better id be interested in learning more about it.. does it have automatic linking functions like link2sd does or is everything manual?
mount /data to sdcard0 or extsdcard
hey mate, super grateful for the folder mount! nice one..
been tinkering with mounting from /data/data to sdcard0 or extsdcard but to no avail. I am aware of the warning message when i choose /path, but is there any work around for this?
as of the reason why, i want to install this one game, but it install 1 gb data directly to the device memory, and because of my GT I9100 only has 2 gb partition for the device memory, and i don't want to lose any of my data, i don't know what to do. i even uninstalled every other app but still hasn't reach the requirement.
hope u can help! thanks!
seems like no one is answering questions here anymore? guess ill stay with link2sd.. all the automated functions would have to give it the edge in comparison.. tbh though i havent tried FolderMount but thats due to lack of questions being answered.. basing my opinion solely on experience with link2sd and what i have read about FolderMount
@BHoller, hope I got your question right.
I'm using FolderMount parallel to Link2SD. It works fine. You have to Setup, which folder has to be mounted to which other place on your device (e.g. "Whatsapp/Media" to external SD). In my case I had to create a new folder on my ext SD with a separate File explorer, because FolderMount didn't do it.
Once mounted, FolderMount puts automatically the files to ext SD and does it also automatically after every restart.

I made the jump to Kit Kat and was hoping to clear up the issue with the storage restrictions with something like this. However after reading through the. Apps thread, I had some more questions.
So the MOD on the app thread noted, in fact on the last post I read today (December 19),to come here for questions when he/she was responding to another users post.
Well I'm here and I see a lot of questions from all the posts above........ but the answers just seem to have vanished! I'm certain they are here because the developer specifically noted that one of the strong points for this app is that he wouldn't abandon us and to read over the question and answer section because it would probably answer any questions that we may have, before asking him anything.
Ohhh wait maybe he his answers are just typed in a color font that it is just blending in with the background of all the post here......... right?
I guess I will have to go search for an app that displays this "invisible" text and come back.
Thanks for the redirect MOD!

Once mounted, FolderMount puts automatically the files to ext SD and does it also automatically after every restart.

i went ahead and tested it myself.. there was only 10mb of movable data(im sure a lot more if i uninstalled link2sd).. i dont use my device for games so maybe thats why i couldnt find an advantage.. i have some some ultimate angry birds package and sudoku lol.. thank you though for taking the time to reply to my question and id have to agree in parallel the 2 apps coexist in harmony.. wonder if 1 will step up to overtake the other? lol
Hi All,
I've just updated to MM and everything is running perfectly with root. What a difference in performance!
I have always been able to save stuff into SD card regardless of app using SDFIX patch. (It was meant for Kitkat but also worked on Lollipop)
Is there a fix for this? I want all apps to have access to SD Card..
Or is there a way to create a folder on the SD card for full access? I'm quite confused using these options as i've always applied the SDFix patch
Many thanks
Have you found a solution? I went to edit the permissions and didn't even see the external storage permission in the file, so I'm not sure it's as simple as it used to be.

Nope, still don't know how, i'm just using workarounds for all my applications that require it at the moment. Feels backwards as I use my SDcard a lot since upgrading to MM, but worth it for my phone not lagging anymore!
I do love the upgrade a lot!
