Im Using Amoled Smartphones since the Galaxy (i7500). They all were always showing at 100% Brightness for Black parts of a picture a true Black like the Display is OFF.
If you put the Brightness to 100% and go to an complete Dark Room and open an Black Picture you see some Gray/Yellow Tint on the Screen. You can compare this good by locking the phone to see the Screen OFF and than unlock it to view the Black Picture again. You should see a huge difference. Hope to hear from your experiences.
I've seen that already on the S1 when abusing it a a nightstand clock.
Best guess I've heard is that the (AMO)LED screen leaks some luminosity to other pixels in the background which is then visible as a very faint glow.
However I rather believe that the AMOLED are not truely off but rather get some leak voltage and thus have a very-very-very faint glow (like one photon per second xD )
That would explain the black spots most people seem to mind on AMOLED when on minimum brightness with a black screen; they are truely off or without insufficient leak voltagage (LED's requie a minimum voltage to work).
AMOLED production is somewhat complicated (very thin layer of silver as a power source and a control-layer) so I wouldn't be surprised if the above is true.
Nothing is perfect, especially not a rather new technology.
What else did you expect from a backlit display.

It's not backlit is the point.
Correct me if im wrong here but amoled is, by design, not backlit.

Yeah so I was wondering why it does this little/ hard noticeable yellow/gray tint on a dark room...
There is no Backlight... Unfortunely i Sold my Galaxy S2 so I cant compare it.. But im Sure it wasnt like this
I have this on my gsiii and also on the Gnote... I think is due to the pentile screen
I had this on my Fascinate but realized it wasn't a big issue. Definitely more noticeable on my Gnex but it also has more pixels so that could be why you see more light. I wouldn't call it a problem because the majority of the time it's absolutely unnoticeable. Each pixel has so have some sort of voltage to be ready to react to changes. Turning off/on completely each time light is needed might waste battery.
P.S. I'm noob at displays but that's my theory.

I was curious about this issue as well. It's my understanding that OLEDs do not produce any light in their inactive state.
Regarding your theory, I wonder if it's similar to plasma displays. Even though plasmas are capable of true black (they do not use a backlight) The individual plasma cells have better response times if they aren't fully discharged on blacks. So they have a faint glow that comes from the low power they are using to keep the pixel charged up and ready to go when a color change is needed.
This actually costs a little power though, rather than saving it. So if thats what they are doing, it is for screen quality reasons so that movies and other things look better.
Did some Googling and I couldn't find much information, but there is talk of delivering pre-charge voltage to the OLED pixels to improve response times. So it could be that they are indeed similar to plasma displays in that respect: Capable of true black, but the benefits of not using true black are too good to pass up.
Are you SURE the picture is actually true black? By that i mean pure 100% black in an uncompressed image? If not then you cant expect the phone to display true black. A JPEG of black may not be enough.
My screen it totally off when displaying true black.
I can confirm the screen showing a faint glow on S3 with a true black screen.
Use Firefox with Fullscreen extension (Chrome and the default browser don't seem to have fullscreen mode yet) and go to http://d4f.pf-control.de/black.html
That's rendered on the phone so we can expect it to be the blackest black an app can produce, however in a (very) dark room you'll see a very faint glow coming from the screen and you'll be able to see the black spots (truely black) that people keep complaining about.
The theory about it being a precharge voltage does indeed sound plausible since LED's have a certain reaction time which unfortunately cannot be compensated by e.g. Overdrive as is used in LCD screens.
Note that the S3's "black" is still far better than any LCD.
No mine is still jet black, no light at all.
Go to a COMPLETELY dark room and make sure the screen is actually turned on when on the website (not timed out).
Then take a long-exposure photograph of your phone (still make sure the screen is turned ON!).
I don't have a long exposure camera, but the room is completely dark and my eyes have adjusted, there is no light.
All sgs3 ( as sgs2) screens emit a very week glow on a black pictures ( with the screen on )

It would seem to me that the 'ink spots' many have are not overly dark spots at all, they are what the screen should be. My screen emits no visible light when displaying a true black image, at least nothing my eyes can see, even at the edge of my vision field where light cell are most sensitive. My screen is on maximum brightness.
My screen has no patches, no streaks, no spots, no pink or excessively blue tint. I guess i have a screen thats as near to perfect as they get.
yes there is very faint glow indeed making the screen a bit greyish instead of pitch black

I don't think anyone is trying to paint it as an issue that needs to be resolved. It's more of an odd technical mystery rather than a real problem. The blacks are still extremely deep on an AMOLED, just like with Plasma it puts LCD to shame in that department.
I wanted to test the super amoled screen of our sgs3 and see that black black its display can show !
Since i came from an HD2 , i thought for a while that the sgs3 had the blackest black i've ever seen.. but then curiosity came in and after some tests, it turned out that e.g the galaxy s 2 has a better black and that on sgs3 it is still a bit grey !
Also cheched a black photo to compare it with Nokia's N8 clear black display ..and got beaten as well >_>
I use Multitouch Visible Test to test the black of the devices along with the contrast of the colors when i touch the screen.
All tests have been done at night or at a very dark environment since at day there seems to be no difference.
My question here is :
Can you please confirm that this is a common thing among all of sgs3 users and not a display problem of my display ?
The gs3 lacks the true blacks that are possible with oled tech. I presume it was a compromise Samsung is making for some technical reason.
At first the grey tinge bothered me at night. Now, I don't care; the screen still looks gorgeous.
That said, when you first power on the screen, there is a brief moment where the blacks are truly off - ala gorgeous true black. The tinge might be modifiable in firmware or drivers, but I bet Samsung is lighting all the pixels for a reason.

of course it is still a great display .
I really feel its to reduce the black clipping in dark images and videos which are prevalent on the Galaxy Note and the galaxy nexus.
There was a software solution to reduce the clipping with an app called "Screen Adjuster" which, basically reduces the contrast and makes black "grey". The plus point was that, there is no clipping then.
So I guess samsung has done the same to the S3's screen as maybe they realized that the clipping us a Pentile HD AMOLED limitation.

Surely if rooted it's possible to set up a toggle for the standard 'true black'? I used to use the s2 to read white text on a black background and it was very satisfying to see only the white text with absolutely no glow. This was one of the reasons I went for the s3 over the one x.
So i've heard that the S-AMOLED and S-AMOLED Plus technology has "Perfect" Blacks! Like the Blacks don't even "Light-up".
Is it true? Or is it just a marketing thing? :/
Try this and tell me what do u have?
Turn off all the lights in the night and then view some BLACK picture. U'll see that the Blacks are kinda "Greyish" :/
And there are some pixels that are perfectly black.. but they're just Random... :/

theres also another problem with it aswell... When I view some pitch black picture in a completely dark room. I see some small rectangular shapes that are "Pitch Black" in that Greyish background. I cant snap a picture of that unfortunately but u kinda get the idea. Can someone try this with there own S3 and report me? :/

Mine does the same thing: darker black splotches when viewing a black picture on the dimmest screen setting in a dark room.
Fortunately I don't often find myself looking at all-black images in the dark. It's hardly a major issue.
this issue is quite common, even on iPads, Motorola etc...apparently it is the adhesive within the layers of the AMOLED that causes an "ink" mark when screen displays black images within a dark environment...nothing is actually wrong with your scren, mine has 2 very small dots...while my other friend has had his replaced because the issue was far more prominant...so there is a possibility of claiming warranty? but this will depend on the country/retailer/etc...but always worth giving it a shot if you cant stand this issue...but yes, earlier batches, the issue was far more obvious...but later ones are better but information from other XDA threads suggest that you WONT find a unit without any marks...period.
I have the Indian version/ exynos version of the S9 plus, and the screen seems to be overtly warm or yellow throughout. The whites are mildly yellow instead of white.
I tried everything. Changed the screen mode from adaptive to basic to cinema to photos. Still warm. I tried reducing the reds also. Still a bit yellow. Is this a problem with other users as well? Anyone can help me with this? Do I need to send it for replacement?
I've seen a lot of devices in stores (UK) and most of them -but not all- have a cool white temperature.
As with all panels, unfortunately this boils down to a lottery. I'd suggest you try to replace your phone if you're not happy with it and hope for a better white balance on the next one.
My first S9+ had cool whites but uniformity issues (left side cooler than right side) along with black crush. My 2nd unit has good uniformity, cool whites but sadly still black crush.
Actually it might be worth checking the thread about the colour blending https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9-plus/help/colour-blending-blacks-problem-t3765385 and see if your device has this problem before you make a decision. If you like watching video on your device, it is a much more serious issue than white balance.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went through it and posted it there as well. I don't have the black crush problem (lucky me i guess?), but this yellow tint is unbearable. I think I'll go to the store and show it to them.

I have the same exact issue. I have the blue light filter off, maximum brightness on, and basic display rather than adaptive, and still yellowish. When it initially starts up the screen is white, and then the Samsung software loads and it turns yellow. I factor reset it, same thing happens. Did you find a fix? I have been spending hours trying to fix this issue with zero luck.
same problem here exynos variant. yellowish when facing directly on screen but when viewed from different angle i got better color. hope we will get an answer to this problem of ours.

Here's an example of an unlocked US S9+ that I posted in the black crush thred.
The top of the screen was significantly brighter / warmer than the bottom even during the day. I ended up exchanging this device for another with the same problem. I gamble in the amoled lottery through a different retailer.

I was Having exactly the same problem, but then I start thinking backwards and I realize that he problem start happening after I Activate night light for google ebooks, then I when there and deactivate night light and it fix my problem, and that is the reason why it affects your phone even if you reset the phone to fabric because the ebook night light is on google not on the phone inself.

Hey guys im living in saudi arabia we have the samsung exynos version
first and foremost the display is frighgin amazing nothing to say about that, next the whites, allthe background with white screen (csetting chrome youtube all bckgrnds ) everywhere its like a coffe dipped ( maybe a bit too much) but in general the white does not feel like its supposed to
its like the warm setting comes in default but
they had the same issues with s8 & s8+ last year the store guy told me "samsung had fixed it" :::::bull****.
there really is this yellow tint problem this is exactly what happened to me:
1. 13/04/18 bought the s9+ 128gb titanium grey from store
2.opened the box two days later (i know) was busy.
3.the moment i switched on it started troubling me going through the initial settings in mid brightness , i said to myself might be ready after setting up. Then when the phone swtiched on i forgot about it all coz the screen is beautiful you gotta admit that
anyways after sometime going through the ssetting i found the yellow tint i was friggin irritating.
4.i played a lot with the display settings
adpative display
WQHD+
yelloww tint
then went into the advanced made some rgb changes it is possible to get somewhat of a pure white screen but stilll it is not perfect
so on
5.18/04/18 i went back to the store showed em the problem u know what they said
"I'm the first one reporting such a complaint" anyways he said hell compare it with a piece , they got a s9 at first switched on and fish it had the same yellow tint. i had lost all hope
i told em compare it with the same model so they got another one black s9+ switched it on and "hurray" the screen was pure white( cool setting white) and they wer dumbstruck he called the supervisors they all saw the problem, they reset both the phones nothing anyway i got a replacement by closing time. took home the new s9+ grey
6. opened it " fish" it was the same yellow tint . anyways the store told me if i was facing the same issue again to come back.
so will update you guys after

I am not an international user, but I would have to agree with the people in this thread who say that screen balance really is a lottery with the way that Samsung manufacturers AMOLED displays. The displays are produced in big sheets that some refer to as 'wafers' with each individual display punched out of that sheet. The closer your display was punched from the center of the sheet. The better quality/balance it will have. The displays punched out from the edges of the sheets are more likely to have discoloration, and other anomalies. With that being said, there is truly no such thing as a 'perfect' AMOLED display. The most you can hope for is one that is more or less within the tolerable limits of your expectations. I have a T-Mobile Snapdragon S9+ with a manufacture date placing it closer to what was probably the beginning of the second production wave after the initial pre-release wave and my display is pretty good. Little warmer than I am comfortable with but uniform in balance, very little shift, no crushing.
i have an international DUOS (dual sim) version of the G965F Exynos, and when compared with demo phones here in uk and a friends s9+ from o2 (all same settings) its more yellow ... a bit annoyed but its still a nice screen ...
same thing here in my country, all of the display units have cooler displays than my retail s9+ and i don't consider that to be an issue
i'm almost completely sure they tweak those display units, so they look better than the retail version.. after all, they need something to show off with, something that will attract the customers and what's better than the display? i mean, that's the first thing users see and interact the most with, so it kinda makes sense.. moreover, you cannot even open the display settings, because it crashes immediately after you tap on it

Funny that you said that because I've went through literally 6 phones and 3 of them had perfect whites. The other 3 were yellowish.
Thanks that solved the problem.
Clear cache fix this problem for me. It's look like blue filter stay on and show status off ...

S9 + yellow tint on screen FIX
Hello! I found a solution to your problem! I also have s9 +.. and every time i was recording in QHD or UHD.. and then try to see what i had recorded..my screen was turning yellow with no reason.. like the blue light filter was on..even if this one is allways OFF. . . So i found out how to fix that and have no more problems after. Go to Settings - ACCESSIBILITY - VISION - And then close to the buttom you will see : COLOR ADJUSTMENT... You click o that, then turn this ON, and then go and choose :TRITAN ( blue and yellow ) or PERSONAL ... and this is it!
I think this problem is a software bug. I had done a hard reset etc.. but my problem wasn't fixed until i had done those settings on color adjustment!

Thanks for this tip, it fixed my yellowish screen instantly. I had turned night light on in Google Play books a week or so ago and forgot about it, but ever since my screen has been too warm and yellow and general Android Settings did not help. Problem solved as soon as I turned night light off in Play Books. Turning off blue light in general settings does not work.
So I currently own a Tab S4, Note 10+ and Note 8 and I've been impressed with the AMOLED screen. Today I got a Tab S6 and I'm severly disapointed by the screen quality. Compaired to the other AMOLED displays, this looks like an old LED panel, pretty bad quality no deep blacks, low contrast and the same image looks totally different over the two Tab screens. Additionally, when something comes up that blurs the background, the effect is more like a severly reduced pallet count rather than the normal blurring effect.
Is this normal for the Tab S6 or is this a bad unit?
I've also had trouble with the under screen finger print scanner not registering fingerprints, so I'm thinking faulty...
I haven't had any problem with the screen nor the fingerprint. Might be a bad unit.
No problems with mine...Everything looks great. Just a thought...When I first got mine up and running it looked a little dim as you describe. I went into the settings and put it on vivid and it lit up and was a totally different look. But if that don't help then probably a faulty screen.
Come from the tab s3 have an s10 plus as my daily phone looks just as good as the s10 plus in my opinion.

Yeah sounds like a bad screen....I would take it back.
The quality control is awful, I've had three which I've returned due to uneven black levels.
Samsung are obviously aware of the issues with the displays but they don't care because many users just don't complain about it, or don't know what to look for.
Apparently there are a lot of people having uniformity issues with their devices and there doesn't seem to be one free of defects. As always it's the OLED lottery! Exchange until you're satisfied.

We are all techies in this forum the average user would probably not even notice if the backlight was uneven especially if they have come from an old non OLED device I think that's probably part of the issue

Totally different look that gnus hooked people up on, and milliards of nobbs saying that amoled is way superior tehnnologi. Now it decided to turn around and present natural colour palette (with uneven wrinkled display to boot), i agree that it can be not so good to look at it after vivid

Im in the same position as you and I already bought 3 Tablets that had unsatisfying black levels. I feel bad for buying and returning them and I am asking myself if I should keep trying or just give up.
The OLED display on my note 8 looks so smooth and even. I wish I would find a similar tablet display.
Did you finally find a unit of the Tab S6 that has perfect blacks ?

Unsatisfying black levels? How is this possible? Black should be totally black LOL xD
Do you mean the grey color or something near black? Or you guys really talk about true black color? ( for example when booting up the device )
True blacks are fine, but it doesn't handle mixing very well - Compression and noise is easily noticeable at that point.
For example : The blacks in this video look terrible and Compression is easily noticeable when mixing the Vegas sign and the landscape of the city.
But in this video, they're perfect - The only noticeable problem in this video for me is when the camera is panning the planet and mixing black, purple and blue - at which point some minor noise is present but the rest is fine.

No, I'm not concinved there are any perfect displays. I still have one corner that's darker, honestly this experience has put me off Samsung. As soon as there's an Android tablet with better specs I'm done with this, I might be done with Samsung to be honest, the punch holes in their new phones are horrible and they're overpriced..
What's the best way to check the uniformaty of the panel in the S6? I don't believe I've got any issues but better safe than sorry!
Tab S4 much better will return the s6 I just bought as you can see grey in blackboard in so.e videos which you don't on the tab S4. Hopefully replacement will be better.
