Greetings my fellow XDA experts,
I have a Galaxy S2 (i9100) International version on the NeatROM 4.8 ( XXLSW). What has happened is that my Softkeys are dead and unresponsive.
There is no illumination and response from them. So I have a phone without the menu and back buttons, which implies that I have a f**ked up iPhone like phone with just one Home button to function with.
I took the phone to the service center and they said it's a single piece with the display so the entire display would need to be replaced which is unreasonable and needless since the display works absolutely perfect.
So I was thinking of a remedy in terms of the ROM I use with the phone. Is there any custom ROM available for the S2 which would enable me to use a part of the display as the MENU and BACK buttons itself ? Like the Nexus 4 has ? I don't mind losing out on screen space to enable me to get those buttons back.
Please do suggest me any such ROM's or methods through which I can use the phone without having to change a fully functional touchscreen display. Spending so much just to get the Soft key functionality back is plain ridiculous and a pure manufacturing drawback from Samsung. Yuck
Anyways, please do help with any pointers.
Thanks and Cheers !

You'll be hard pressed to find a 4.2.2 ROM that doesn't have some sort of on-screen control. Do a bit of searching around on XDA of all the 4.2.2 ROMs, look at screenshots etc. Navigation bar is the same style as a Nexus 4. Pie controls are a method of on-screen control. AOKP ribbons are also for on screen control. There's probably more. Then there exist ROM's which attempt to mimic the AOSP, Nexus-style experience. Plenty to choose from.

So basically My ROM territory is now limited to any 4.2.2 AOSP/AOKP Rom's ? Do all of them have on-screen navigation?
Like the Parandroid? No more Sammy Rom's obviously.

Hmm well I imagine you could find some lower than 4.2.2 with those controls if you wanted to, but no need to if you don't want. You can use ParanoidAndroid if you want, search my posts for a link for i9100, I posted it yesterday or the day before I think. It won't be the first link you find on Google thats for sure, version 3.6 is the latest. As far as 'limited to 4.2.2 AOSP/AOKP'.... Depends how you see it. I don't see it as a 'limitation'. Start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23231772. Go through AOKP and AOSP till you find something you like. Bear in mind that the AOKP contains waaay more than just plain AOKP, there's hybrid (combos of CM,AOKP,PA, AOSP usually) and all sorts in there.
Enable Navigation Bar in AOSP/AOKP roms etc for getting these functions back.
Alternatively if you want navigation bar in Sammy Roms you can still have them , look for soft key enabler in play store or else you can edit build.prop of your phone , there will be option of soft keys , change it from 0 to 1.
Use pimp my rom it have a option for on screen buttons (back menu and recents) so you can have any rom

S2 soft keys not working
Issue seems to be related to the usb charging receptacle. As long as a good charging cable is connected, the soft keys work. They work for a short time after unplugging and then stop working again.

Hello,
i want to start using ubuntu touch on my nexus 4. The problem is, the touch screen does not work on the uper part of the display (just some pixels).
I already installed Ubuntu and i really like it. The Problem is, i cant use the notification center nor the back buttons of the apps.
So, is it possible to reduce the screen resolution, that the upper part of the display is not in use anymore?
Thanks and best regards
As you haven't received any reply yet, I'd like to point you to the official Ubuntu Phone mailing list which you can subscribe to at launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone.
If anyone can help you with this, then those are the people from the list.

Hm, maybe i should but i still think it is softvare or mui bug, i just tried swift keyboard while battery was still over 35 degrees, google keyboard still buggy but swift keyboard works well, so i really dont know what to do. Maybe try to flash another rom or roll back to MIUI 7, long ago I had problem with my xperia mini, when it got hot mobile get tottally crazy and screen was unoperational, but i find way to solve that with the program called G Script if i remeber correctly, had to write some variables and restart smartphone and from then it worked flawless.

My redmi 3 note was also overheating badly. Downloaded a cool master app, but that didn't help. I had added a 64GB SD card. Maybe that was the cause of the overheating? Anyway, I have now removed the SD card and am busy upgrading to the newest MIUI..... we will see
Is this tablet really worth rooting? I have rooted every android tablet I have owned which is about 5. The reason I ask is that Android has matured a lot over the years and now gives you a lot of control over your phone. Yes there is the bloat but with the expandable memory as big as it is now that is not really a problem. But, if you do root this tablet is there a way to do it without tripping Knox?
Whether it's worth rooting or not is really up to you. There are definitely some down sides, such as tripping Knox (there's no way to get around that) and not being able to take OTA's. If you use twrp recovery the devices is even less secure than just rooting as there is no password protection with the twrp available. I still root, mainly because I've been doing it for years. The only things I use it for is adaway, and there are rootless solutions for that, and bloat (not because it really slows things done much but it annoys me.
I've been messing with Android devices since froyo and it's become somewhat of a hobby of mine. So I root mostly because I can.

I dont think I could own a device that I couldn't root. To me it's half of the device it should be without root.
I need access to the entire file system not what the manufacturer thinks I should have access to.
So much of the stuff I do to my device needs root. I don't use custom roms, so need it even more.
So many hidden options without root.
I also agree with ashyx, getting to the whole file system gives me the flexibility to do things I couldn't otherwise do.

rooting does give access to options this tablet should have. I switched the capacitive button by editing generic.kl. Does anyone know how to turn off the lights of those buttons?
You can turn the lights off simply from the settings app, I think under display.
And yeah, rooting is a must no matter if Android / Touchwiz has matured a bit more. I also have turned off the app switcher button because I like to rest my thumb there when I hold the tablet in landscape (which is how I mostly use it). I remapped the back button to open my browser via a double tap (single tap and long press deactivated) and Youtube via a triple tap via Xposed Additions. Double tapping Home turns the screen off, double tapping Power opens the BT settings to connect my audio adapter. I turned off the status bar by forcing immersive mode. I have Youtube working in the background, with no ads playing and with up / down swipe to change volume. My SD card is accessible for all apps just like back on Kitkat. My screen isn't turning on when I connect an USB cable.
Tons of other little things that wouldn't be possible or harder to do w/o root and Xposed.

Thanks but I have used the US and UK FW and I don't have such option. I turn off the lights by setting power save mid mode and disabling all limiters. Im looking for a way to disable it once and for all without the use of apps, etc. Similar to how i edited the generic file to swap the buttons
so, you spend 600 bucks or more, to buy a full featured Samsung Tablet, and the first thing you want to do it root it and turn off all the features/tweaks? I dont get it..
No, I rarely, if ever root a tablet, no need for me, as its a backup device, not a mainline device, and, the same goes for my note 8; I wouldn't have spent a thousand bucks on a phone with tons of features if I wanted an AOSP type of experience; there are alot cheaper phones out there if you dont want all these things enabled..
Hi guys,
I just flashed android 10 on my oneplus 3 via Havoc v3.4.
I was wondering, whether somebody were able to help me with a kind of special problem.
So I'm using my home button to put the phone to sleep by long pressing it. This can be set in the phone settings. so far so good.
But now on android 10 the duration of said long press seems to be unnecessarily long, like over a second. Thats really annoying, when you just want to put your phone away and have to keep your finger on that capacity button for that extra amount of time.
So I was wondering, whether there might be a relatively simple way of tweaking the build.prop or something, to change the duration of said time_out ?
I already tried the hold/delay in the google settings, but that's just for touch inputs on the screen.
Also the forum search didn't pop up any usefull results.
Thanks so far!
