What carriers does it work on?
It'll work on AT&T and T-Mobile in the USA, plus most other GSM carriers. It has the following LTE bands: 2, 4, 5, 12, 17. It comes factory unlocked.
Who makes this phone?
It's made by Chinese manufacturer Huawei, though this phone is sold under the honor brand (that's with a lowercase "h"). Huawei also made the much-adored Nexus 6P, but you probably already knew that.
Who is this phone for?
It's a phone for "everyone" because it has a budget-friendly price with midrange specs. Power users might not like the specifications, but ultimately this is a very well-rounded phone at a terrific price.
What's the battery life like?
The honor 5X has a 3,000mAh power pack which the company claims allows for a day and a half of "heavy" use. Specifically, the company claims 27 hours of talk time and 740 hours of standby time. The phone does support fast-charging with a 2amp charger, but does not have wireless charging.
Why doesn't it have Android Marshmallow?
The phone comes with Android 5.1.1 and honor claims a Marshmallow update is due in 2016. If you want it sooner, keep your eyes on the forums at XDA.
How can I get it, how much is it, and when does it launch?
It's $199 on Amazon and begins shipping January 16, 2016.
Zomg, I am not ready to buy it but I want to know more!
Check out the official honor 5X website
I'm currently considering this phone.
Couple of questions for those knowledgeable on Huawei's products:
1. How good is Huawei's software update program? What's it comparable to if you're experienced with other manufacturers?
2. How well supported are their products here on XDA?
Thanks for your time.
I dont love what Huawei does with its android customization. any word on an unlocked bootloader? This thing could be great with cyanogenmod.

1. They've said this phone should get monthly updates and said that it will be updated to M.
2. They have four phones available to buy direct from gethuawei.com. One is the Nexus 6p. Two of the remaining three have official CM builds. Take that for what it's worth.
i've looked everywhere but haven't found an answer...does this thing come with gorilla glass?
I'm confused Amazon says 2 GB of Ram while other sites say 3 GB of ram, also Amazon says shipping Jan 31st, i'm confused man.

probably the Chinese version.
Anyways. Reading the recent XDA article on it, I became curious. What do I miss out on by not having a gyroscope?
there is many things that i've been confusing about in HONOR 5X
1-the SD615 ( cuz lately i've been on G2 SD800 AND S4 SD600 ) not sure if it's gonna give me the same experience or no
2-supporting the device from the main company and the other developers (Such as CM,RR)
3-RAM : some say it's 3GB and others say it's 2GB i think i'll wait until the release to see if they'll launch the 3gb with a bit higher price
4-Still not enough accessories out there for this device
=====
but overall i think it's good device with sporting a med-range specs for daily use
also the screen is kinda nice with good contrast in sun
There are Chinese version and US version of the phone.
US version comes with 2 GB RAM and will be available for Jan 31st.
The deal breaker for many in USA is missing T-mobile support for Band 12. Phone is supporting it, but is not licensed by T-mobile so most likely it will be disabled.
Hi,
i'm still using Samsung Note 3 if I'll get this Honor 5X, is it a downgrade ? nothing wrong with Note 3, just had a new battery, running good now but just want a new phone and this one is cheap.
All sharings are welcome.
Thanks,
CVC
If this gets root and cyanogenmod, I might consider it but seems like a downgrade from Oneplus One besides fingerprint scanner. Project Ara where are you....?
Although someone just mentioned it, I just want to know about Rom development. Official CM and AOSP will be a necessity. NO EMUI or whatever that thing is!
I believe this phone would be a good upgrade (Great at $200) to my aging GS4 which constantly has "Sim card errors". I would also like to get Insurance and dont know if it exists since it sells on Amazon. Neither Newegg or honor website shows insurance options.
I am also considering OP2 and something soon so I hope this phone gets support here.
seems Official CM support is a given based on a couple posts in the Pre-order thread. One post by Huawei USA employee and one tweet also posted in that thread.
Once you have a phone with fingerprint, using phones without it sucks.

Yes. Would get this as a gift for my mom but only with AOSP android/cyanogenmod.
How can i get it in Canada, seem both Amazon.com and Newegg.com don't want to ship this to Canada. Do anyone know any Amazon Proxy service like SamuraiBuyer for japanese amazon but instead for USA Amazon ? Thank.

Yes, honor 5X supports unlocking the bootloader. You must register an account on the EMUI site and then you can generate a bootloader unlock code.

LOL! I had the same issues with my gs4. The huawei rep on here says they released the kernel source code and you can unlock the bootloader. I would bet money there will be some form of aosp rom within a month. The fact that huawei has a rep on here and they've done a lot with their website makes me think they are taking this phone and customers seriously. I don't expect them to bend over backwards for us but so far it's looking good.

For the first time I'm concerned.
I should be getting my Rogers Optimus G tomorrow, but all the recent specification information leads me to understand that the Rogers unit and the AT&T units are not the same device ... when they are usually identical (with the exception of some minor issues).
The Rogers device appears to be far more similar with the Sprint (and Korean) designs. It DOES NOT have an SDCard slot, but the camera is only 8MB, and the Rogers device is the first in North America (perhaps the world) that will utilize the superior LTE signal (2600MHz), which should result in download speeds approaching 75+ Mbps. Yes, it also has the 700MHz spectrum, but not the somewhat slower 1700MHz frequency.
My concern, though, is with ROM development. If it's not an AT&T unit, per se, and not a Sprint unit, what can we do?
Any ideas from the experts?
Peter

I've never had an LG device, and I've been reading lots to get prepared. I, too, noticed that the bootloaders are locked. Even though I really need LTE for my job, I'm very seriously considering getting the Nexus 4.
Peter
If you need LTE for work maybe hold out for the HTC One X+
Edit: I guess that's not LTE actually, will I'll tell you aside from a couple issues only software so far this phone is a beast fast as hell and the build quality sends fantastic. The volume buttons rattle a little if you tap the screen hard but I think it's just cause the device is so solid.

As of now, there doesn't seem to be much going on in the dev section for the AT&T unit either. Even if the bootloader was unlocked, then what? Without devs?
I just made a similar post in the "who's got this phone" thread. The N4 comes out today, all we can do is wait and see what happens. Since it shares almost identical hardware, it shouldn't take much to port ROMs/kernels back and forth.

Porting between the two should actually be easy, I am pretty sure I have done enough cooking of my own to take up that. But with locked bootloaders there is nothing we can do for now.

I currently have the AT&T Optimus G, but am considering returning it for the Nexus 4 as I dislike the wideness and rounded sides of the AT&T variant.

I got my Optimus G this morning, and here's the model number:
LG-E971 RGS (I'm sure the RGS means Rogers)
What is the model number of the AT&T variant?

Hi Peter,
not sure if it was using the 2600MHz band at the time, but I DID have a speedtest run reaching just over 100Mb/s. Although the speed was a bit higher than my SGS3 (used the same SIM and got around 70Mb/s), a higher frequency means shorter wavelength which also means less penetrating power through walls and any other physical medium. Based on that, I'm wondering if it is truly superior.
---------- Post added at 01:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:24 PM ----------
i think Rogers, Bell, and Telus all have the same version, i.e. the E971. Unless I'm mistaken, seems the breakdown is as follows:
E973 - 32GB storage, 13MP camera
E971 - 32GB storage, 8MP camera
E970 - 16GB storage, 8MP camera, microSD slot (expandable memory)
imo, the E970 looks the best and i would also prefer the expandable storage over better camera. it is indeed a shame that rogers didn't get the AT&T variant; we, Rogers folk, seem to have gotten the worst of the bunch. I wonder if, perhaps, the E972 would be/is a 16GB version with 13MP camera.
Seriously considering getting this phone myself on Rogers.
Especially after the Nexus 4 debacle.
But the locked bootloader would mean no CM10 and that is the only thing holding me back from buying this phone.
I wonder why LG would do this.
Is there a chance that some genius developer will be able to figure out a way to unlock the bootloader without LG's blessing?

it's definitely a nice phone; i prefer the hardware over my SGS3, but HATE that the E971's storage is limited to 32GB, not even all of which is usable.

Peter-
I'm curious how you got your phone so quickly? I reserved an E971 over a month ago, was supposedly #3 on the Reservation waitlist (Rogers PR BS, of course) and yet only received the shipping notice yesterday which means it probably won't show up in the wild west here until late next week. And yet still I've already received my E970 from Amazon Wireless in the US in TWO DAYS, and SIM-unlocked it for use on my Rogers account.
Anyways - regarding the versions and hardware revisions - YES. These are the two reasons I decided to order the E970. Because the domestic Canadian versions have no SD-card support at all, and second will have far less aftermarket support for ROMs and software. I believe GSMArena claimed the Rogers model would be E971, and Bell and Telus would be the stock 'international' E973 model which might fare slightly better.
But having talked to a Qualcomm engineer I know, he suggested that the S4 Pro is entirely software-driven for LTE configuration. So as I asked in another thread, does this mean the baseband software could be rewritten or substituted from another model to edit the LTE bands the radio operates on? ie E971->E970 or L-01E->E970?
Hmm, I simply reserved as usual ...

I did nothing special. I simply reserved the unit as usual. I was #5 on the list and it arrived at my local Rogers Plus store exactly on the day of release.
I'm in Mississauga, and I know that Rogers' warehouse is also in the GTA, so when something ships, I always get it the next day.

@amrando
Curious - does the AT&T version work with LTE on Rogers? I know it is lacking the 2600 band, but it still has the 2100. I'm considering getting the AT&T version for the exact same reason as you - expandable storage and better community support, but don't want a crippled LTE phone. Also, how/where did you get it unlocked?
Cheers
The Att version uses 700/AWS for LTE. As long as you're in a 700mHz area, you should be ok
I am in Canada and am looking for the LG quick circle case that enables PMA charging (necessary for both the AT&T model and the Canadian model to enable any kind of wireless charging). Does anyone know where I can get one? The case that Rogers sells does not have any kind of wireless charging support and just slips onto the back of the phone. I have tried looking through all of the major carriers websites and some other websites and none of them seem to support wireless charging of any form.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: A battery cover that enables PMA charging may also work since I already have a case and may be easier to find.
Amazon may have them. At any rate it can't hurt to check. EBay would also probably have them.

It snaps/hugs to the back of the battery door instead of replacing it (unlike the other variants). Model number is CCF-345N
yeah, we get screwed.. I hear there may not be *any* wireless charging accessories. I picked up a GelCase today from Robbers and gave them feedback that they NEED to get LG to bring in accessories.
If PMA gets installed on the iPhone 6 we're going to be okay as the market will follow and and accessories will be available. If iPhone 6 comes with Qi, then we're screwed.. even more.
Hopefully the Canadian owners of the G3 aren't forgotten. I'm just disappointed that we got shafted and ended up with the AT&T standard for wireless charging with no capabilities out of the box. Talk about a money grab

Oh, as Canadians… we're always forgotten; and we should expect to be disappointed, and shafted.
I know this is from a different phone and tablets, but the contents we get from Sony Z2/Z2 tablet we get in Canada is just about the worst in the world. Other countries get fancier bundles. The same goes with the G3, other countries received better G3 package (even though they could be promotional items).

Keep an eye in the model number as all lg g4 quick circle cases are numbered a certain way
You can get stickers taken from cases or the offical cases but the offical cases will cost you 30 bucks vs 5-10 bucks for non offical ones

I really feel let down here, in the UK/EU we won't get the additional hardware features like wireless charging and DAC yet we are still having to wait to learn when we get a release. Surely it's quicker and easier to manufacture kit with less hardware in it !?!
Double whammy, if i am going to have to wait then S8 here i come.
It will be interesting to see the price in the UK, might be why we have the most basic model.
If they charge a stupid price, then it will be a much harder sell.
S8 looks like it will be a stupid price, with current £/$

Agreed it will be a hard sell if they don't get the pricing right too, but they have the perfect opportunity to steal a march on Samsung and it looks like they might miss out completely with the S8 available for pre-order 29th March in an EU region according to the source in this article...

It's an easy decision for me, because I don't like AMOLED. Although if it is priced crazily I still won't get the G6.
The P10 Plus even has my attention and I'm not a fan of Huawei. (Despite the fact most of our internet infrastructure seems to run on their kit, lol).
I think the UK version is going to be £699 I have however imported the Korean version to the UK which cost me £680 and it has the 64gb storage and the 32bit dac

Seriously? I was monitoring the g6 to replace my g2. But no wireless charging or dac in Europe? Too bad for LG, because I won't buy it then.
I was considering importing the Korean version but have read that LG haven't honoured warranties in the past when people have done this. Not dropping £600 on a device with that type of risk (particularly with recent LG issues)

Ah ok, that explains it, lol.
yeah I've seen in some vids that the glass gives it a slight blue hue in some lights. Still my preferred colour option.

Thank you bro but i need a dual sim
So as per my original post thread, no thanks LG !
I cannot believe Samsung have beaten LG to it for UK release, what a missed opportunity. I have just ordered an S8 as it's shipping on 20th April (free Samsung bluetooth speaker via Carphone Warehouse). Still no sign of a LG G6 UK release date, they might as well forget it surely ??
Hi guys,
It's my humble opinion that the Honor 20 Pro is the best price/performance flagship out there at the moment. Is there any major drawbacks to why I should not order it (or why it's not so popular in general)?
I live in Sweden and I'm thinking of order this one:

Just bought this phone. After few days of usage I cannot think any major drawbacks. Phone is bit heavy, screen is ips (doesn't bother me). For the price this is a great phone.
I bought it from Finnish operator for 499€
Hi, be careful to order "asia version" Honor 20 Pro, I found that there is no support for FDD-LTE B20 (800MHz). I don't know if this is also important in Sweden as in our country (Czech Rep.), but I suppose so.
I'll order this phone also, soon, but here in CR, price is fair (appr. 500 euro), including 2year warranty, without these problems ..
Also if ordering from China to Sweden you most probably have pay taxes and possible custom fees. Operators.
So far so good :] .. After I installed Nova Launcher in phone, I finally have "my android" as I like to have, no problems so far .. I like this phone! :]
I chose this model among Mate 20 Pro and LG G8S, the price was the same ..

I just ordered this one from https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07TXJPR76/ref=pe_3044161_189395811_TE_SCE_dp_2. and was shipped by Amazon yersterday.
Do you thint it will support our networks in SVK, CZE, AU etc? I didnt chceck any model-numbers like sansibar did (https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-20-pro/development/model-versions-t3967321)
Where can I check the model-number of this phone as i didnt find it in the description? Hope the German version will be fine for me...
Thanks for Your reply,
Peter
Hi, it's hard to say, from which distribution is this H20Pro selled on Amazon .. I can only confirm that phone ordered in CR (Alza) is without any problems with Czech LTE bands (incl. VoLTE). This is a screen from my phone, model YAL-L41.

Thanks for your reply. I hope this one will support Slovak Orange, because they are offering it as German version, so I think that the Item model number: 51093VEX (from the description will be) will handle with our network or Central European networks.
Peter
I saw that the Asian version costs a ridiculous price, 50-100 dollars. What should be changed as internal components to make it "internationalize". It would be interesting, if there was only to change the antenna internal and update the firmware with EU firmware. But I think it's also a level of motherboard components that houses RF components ..
In itself it is a great cell phone. The side release is spectacular. I'm not a fan of displays with fingerprint release. Certainly if I were left-handed I'd turn up my nose. But I find the lateral release is more immediate, good honor.
I like everything except the display. The bad luck wants them to have mounted an ips. With obvious increases in consumption, but generally it seems to behave well. If it were amoled or oled it would behave better in consumption.
Keep in mind that if it follows huawei, huawei does not make global phones. The only ones are iphone, oneplus, and mr google. (although zte with axon 10 pro, and some versions of mi9 are well supplied with bands but not all bands..). Huawei for the p30 have a version dedicated to Canada for example (because there they have extra bands LTE). But if we go to see the level SAR of the phones: oneplus, iphone and mr.google have sar high. Samsung keeps it low, it makes N-versions of their phones. The US of Samsung normally with Snapdragon version works in the EU, but not the other way around.

Fortunately Airtel and jio wifi calling works. Badly want the dual Sim feature, if anyone could help anyhow to achieve it would be awesome. BTW beautiful phone.

If you have any friends or relatives at UAE, try getting it through them. I requested One of my friend at Fujairah, UAE to order a Sony Xperia 1 iii (Dual SIM, SIM Free, 12 GB RAM, 256 GB Storage, Black) from Amazon UAE (amazon ae) website for me. Even though it is not available in UAE, we got an Amazon Prime Product Listing in which Amazon UK Seller was providing International Shipping to UAE. Total Amount came up to around ₹ 92 K (Phone ₹ 85 K, Shipping and Handling ₹ 827, Import Fees Deposit ₹ 6 K). Ordered on 13 March 22 and got it delivered on 17 March 22. Genuine Product from Sony UK, came in a sealed pack, unscathed. Unboxed and confirmed that everything is fine. He will be back by this month end. Eagerly waiting to take over the dream machine.

Hi Hazzay ...
Am using Airtel & Jio SIMs, the major 4G players in India. VoLTE and WiFi Calling is working fluently in mY Sony Xperia 1 III (XQ-BC52).
VoLTE in Action
Initially i searched for VoLTE option in the settings but could not find it. I was like OMG. 4G Calling came to my rescue.
Jio 4G LTE with VoLTE enabled, in Action.
Airtel 4G LTE with VoLTE enabled, in Action.
WiFi Calling.
Took over the Phone from my friend on the 1st week of April. Sorry for the much delayed reply, was busy with my professional commitments.
Ohh wooow.
Did you have to do anything to get it working?
