Weird GPS Issue - E 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey All,
Not sure if ROM makes a difference (I'm on resurrection remix). I suppose it could, but thought I'd ask here to shed some light.
Very odd GPS behavior. I have GPS on 24/7. When I load up any GPS program (GPS Analyzer, Waze, Maps) It tries to grab a GPS location, but absolutely no luck. No indicators in GPS Analyzer either of any GPS catches.
After I toggle GPS once in settings, it works perfectly and flawlessly. Any Ideas?
I'm on 6.0.1

I get the same behavior intermittently on crDroid 6.0.1. I have not figured out how to trigger the loss of GPS, so haven't been able to get a log.

Interesting. I've narrowed it down slightly more. Tested this on mine, if you'd like to test on yours (to see if we're having exact same problem)
It may only occur after a reboot, now that I think about it.
To reproduce)
GPS is in High Accuracy Mode and works fine.
Reboot Phone
GPS is in High Accuracy Mode. Does not work at all.
Cycle GPS in and out of High Accuracy Mode. It now works again.
I will see if it works when I go home later without rebooting my phone or GPS cycling

tested this a little today - tried several reboots, and could not reproduce the issue. now that I'm thinking about it, I can't specifically recall having a GPS failure since I've been on the newest squid2 kernel.

[Q] EB01 - My GPS isn't working, it won't lock on at all.

My GPS isn't working, it won't lock on at all. Anybody else experiencing something like this? If so, do you know a fix?
SOLUTION (Worked for me):

Mine did the same thing after flashing EB01 so I checked the location & security settings and found that both VZW and google location services were turned off. After turning them back on I got a lock in Gps test in less than 10 seconds.

I tried that, didn't seem to do anything.
Did you try removing the battery? Do that, and leave it out for about 1 minute. Let it reboot and see what happens.

Mine did that today. I rebooted and I was able to get immediate GPS lock after that.

That did the trick for me as well.
I had GPS issues with EB01 too - I narrowed it down to: if I rebooted with GPS turned OFF it would never get a GPS signal if I turned on via the notification bar. If I went into Settings-->Location & Security and checked "standalone GPS services" and accepted the warning GPS then worked great, locked immediately. But if I turned it off and rebooted again the same issue would occur. I tested this with SC 2.1, SC 2.2, and the stock EB01 ROM. Same behavior every time.
It also seemed like if the phone sat overnight (no reboot) and the GPS was off it would then not see any sats until I went into Loc&Sec again and checked the box there, but I didn't do extensive testing on that.
I never keep my GPS on unless I need it, so this was a deal breaker for me, back to DL09 until the next Froyo build comes out.

That sounds more like a confusion from the DL09 to EB01. Did you wipe your data?
yes, wiped data, cache, and dalvik cache twice each before installing each ROM I tested. Consistent across all three.
Im seeing a decrease after installing the voodoo kernel for eb01. I turned on all 3 gps providers and rebooted and it was a little better. Im just gonna give it time to work itself out.

Thanks for your response. I recently rooted and went to EB01 SC2.2 and have been experiencing GPS issues, and started to try to figure out what makes it glitch so I can have some consistency. Have you found out anything new, or just waiting for next update?
I've noticed that I can only get a gps lock with vzw and goggle location services turned on along with the standalone gps. After rebooting, I have to go into the location settings screen and manually turn on the standalone gps if it was off already (or click it off and then on again). After that my GPS works pretty well.
What I have noticed is now all of a sudden Google Navigation will occasionally say "GPS Signal Lost" while I'm driving which never seemed to happen before prior to DL30/EB01. If I open GPS Status immediately after I hear that, half the time it's still connected to several satellites so I don't really know what the issue is there.

No, I gave up on EB01 until the next formal update/leak is released. Between that GPS issue and the battery life seeming significantly worse in my SHORT trial of EB01 I decided to go back to DL09 and wait.

Interesting, thanks for confirming that I'm not the only one who has had this same issue. Most people have just dismissed what I've reported without trying it saying "EB01 is the b3st w1nnar why do you turn off your gps that's st00pid".

Its the unfortunate way AGPS works. You can download GPS status & toolbox from the market. This will (upon startup) connect and download the most recent orbital GPS data providing a fast lock.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
Two quick notes:
1) If you are running SuperClean, the VZW location services setting does absolutely nothing. It is only used by Verizon apps (i.e. VZ Navigator). Google Maps is not able to use the information obtained by VZW AGPS. The entire service has been removed from the ROM.
2) The dropdown gps button is virtually worthless right now unless you leave google location services enabled all the time. There are multiple ways to turn on the GPS through the OS code, and the current implementation causes GPS lock to take nearly a minute longer than if you were to go into the Settings menu and turn it on. At some point, someone will probably mod the drop down to emulate the same method as the settings menu.
That being said, from inside my house, with all my AGPS data cleared, on a freshly cleaned and flashed phone, I can get a fix in less than 3 seconds, accurate to 20 meters without having location services turned on, using only standalone GPS data. The trick is to turn it on from the Settings menu, not the dropdown.

my S3's GPS not working

hi guys i have been testing my galaxy s3's GPS. i am using osmand app as my GPS app. sadly the app could not find any satellites and pin point my current location. even if i leave my S3's GPS active for a more than 5 minutes it could not get any satellites even if i am standing on a open area.
what should i do? how can i reset my GPS?
thanks in advance
Turn mobile data/wifi on and then try to use GPS. If GPS receiver doesn't have fresh AGPS data, cold start will take from 10 minutes to infinity.

Agree with you. Turn mobile data on. GPS or Glonass receiver use mobile network to fix the signal. When your position is done, you can turn off mobile data.
oh do you really need the mobile data active? was it possible to get your exact location without the use of wifi or mobile data? just your GPS? because osmand can download the maps offline then just use the GPs data to pin point your location. have you guys tried using the osmand app?
thanks
GPS receiver needs to download some (4-5 kilobytes) of data from server. This is called A-GPS, Assisted GPS. Without it, GPS still will lock onto satellites, but it will be 20-30 minutes instead of 2-3 seconds.

U only need data/wifi for first location fix and to dl. extra GPS data.when your location is found,u can turn of data/wifi and never use it again if u got downloaded maps.
Its just to get faster location fix on first GPS fix
I just tested my s3's GPS today in open air and got a lock within two seconds. phone locked 15 satellites. My phone is running completely stock rom and kernel.
So as others suggested, you should turn wifi or mobile data on so that A-GPS could work.
If you are worried about your app downloading more data and cost you money eventually then you may try app named "GPS Test". Its a very simple app and gives you some key info like satellites in view and locked to plus accuracy etc. It doesn't download any maps etc. Once you get locked, you can close the app and open your desired maps app.

hey thanks, because last night i was testing my s3's GPS if i have wifi connection my S3 can fix my current location around 2~3 seconds. i also saw my cousin's s3 and he also gets a fix location within 2~3 seconds. but i am not sure if his mobile data is active. that i would like to ask him again.
hehe thanks guys
Hi there,
I also have an issue with my GPS. Navigation is stuck at Searching for GPS.
Also when I run GPS test, it does not see any Satellites. I have my mobile data and WIFI on, and also tried to update the agps data with fastergps.
I have found different threads suggesting to uninstall maps but that did not help either.
Any ideas? (the issue existed on 4.0.4 stock, and also on latest aokp 4.1.1 build 3)
Thanks.
Also the GPS icon flashes briefly (like twice) and then disappears. Watching the notifications the same thing happens - Searching for GPS- appears briefly and then dissappears.
Is this the normal behaviour?

That usually means the phone has stopped searching for satellites for any reason, these usually are app-related.
Please download GPS TEST from Play store and report if it can find and lock on any satellites. If not or if it keeps loosing the connections, then something is wrong.
Make sure you don't let the screen turn off during the fix since that will disable the GPS.

I have tried GPS Test and it sees 0 satellites. I have also tried a couple of other apps with no success.
Even with GPS test running, display on, I still observe the same flashing of the icon and notification popping up, then disappearing after 2 seconds and reappearing again...
Have same problem. I tried GPS test. It take about 5-10s to lock the GPS. However, it will dropped after sometimes.
If some of you guys are not running stock ROM, then there might be kernel related.
I tried Temasek's newest kernel yesterday on my AOSP MIUI ROM, but couldn’t get a gsp fix.
Went back to siyah kernel and got fix within seconds.
Also try setting your regional pool with fasterfix

Aluminum Case
I thought my GPS was busted as it showed which satelites were available (agps had downloaded) but it woudn't lock.
I then took my aluminum case off the phone and discovered that this was interfering with the GPS lock.
So take your case off before assuming that the GPS is buggered. *sigh*
"My gps wasn't working on my phone. I took it to the Verizon store after I had flashed back to stock, they messed with it for a little while and then ordered me a refurbished one. I received it the next day and when I powered it on guess what the gps didn't work. So I called tech support and to my surprise the person that answered the phone actually knew what she was talking about.
She told me the gps issue is a Samsung issue, (even though is only effects Verizon and sprint phones) they are working on an update to fix it. But in the mean time she told me how to do a work around to get it working. Here is what she had me do."
Go to Settings
Application manager
click all at top
go to Google services framework
clear data
go to settings
Application manager
click all at top
go to maps
clear data
uninstall updates
Go to location services
turn off VZW Location service(leave it off to)
Power cycle phone
update maps from android market
now the gps should be working.

GPS Problem

I have a GPS problem / question. I'm on Galaxy Note fre3 Hybrid De[Odex] v2.11 but I don't believe this is a ROM issue. I have certain apps that require location services and GPS to be on, example would be the WWE app or even our SBarometer app. If I turn GPS on and enable location services, the apps do not detect that GPS is on and I have no GPS icon in my status bar. If I use GPS Status it's fine. Any ideas? It's not app settings because on my Mega when I open the same apps the GPS icon comes on immediately and the app works properly.
Have you found a fix for this? I am on stock 4.4.2 with root, and I have been having the same GPS issue for several months now. Whenever I use Waze, it's constantly looking for a GPS signal, and MapMyRun will find it and drop it several times while I run making it impossible to track my runs. One other thing I did notice, is when I'm using Waze, if I turn the screen off, it locks on to the GPS. I can tell it's locked on because the voice commands start giving me directions, but when I turn the screen back on, it looses the GPS signal again. I would really like to get this issue fixed. The only other option will be to take it back to Sprint for an exchange.

I too am having a GPS problem. I'm Stock and not rooted with the most recent Sprint OTA (NK4). I've been suffering with this since NH7 came out and no ROMs, stock or otherwise have fixed my problem. Any recommendations on what I should flash? I'm considering doing an Odin Flash of NC5 just to see if that would help.
I have read through this thread, the first thing I would try is to update your PRL and profile. If GPS works on some apps and not on others I'd be willing to bet there's nothing wrong with the device or a stock rom running on it. I would try and contact customer service for the app and see if others are having the same problems with the apps., and see if there is a fix.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlab.gpsfix I've heard people say this app has helped them with there GPS issues. Hope it helps

[Help] Unusual GPS Issue

My GPS has a bit of a weird issue. If I turn on/reboot my phone and immediately turn on an app with GPS, then I have no problems at all.
However... if I don't do that (AKA my phone has been on for a few mins before I open a GPS based app/I close out of one of those apps and re open at a later time), my GPS does not activate and my accuracy turns to network based, at best (It's not very good). Here are a few screenshots.
I've tried turning the iZat on/off, turning GPS on/off, changing GPS accuracy, turning WI-FI on/off, and stopping each of the apps that are GPS based. However, my thoughts are that the GPS does not activate... for the GPS icon in the notification bar does not turn on when I start having my issues (See the first screenshot). If I turn on the GPS immediately after a reboot/turning the phone on initially, that GPS notification DOES light up and it works just fine. If I'm sitting on a wi-fi network, I have no issues at all. This is only when I'm relying on the network/GPS. What does everyone think? Any chance of fixing this issue? Feel free to ask for more information! Rebooting my phone for navigation is becoming frustrating.
So far my posts have been eerily silent. Thanks!
Before anything.... Have you tried going into maps app(assuming that's the app you use for navigation) settings and clearing cache/data uninstalling and installing again with a reliable WiFi Internet network?

Yes. I have tried that twice. I also tried downloading waze and checking out a few other apps with GPS location features. If I used the GPS feature within the first few mins, no problem was encountered. Anytime after that, GPS wouldn't turn on/lock on.
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one having this issue.
GPS locks for me if I'm not moving but once I move (driving), it's all whack and I get a GPS signal lost from Maps.

I'm glad you got yours working! Unfortunately for me, that trick doesn't work. I am continually having the exact same problem and it spans across multiple apps. If you find anything out, let me know!
I have the same problem. My GPS not fix, in any aplication.
Sometimes, lock for fill minutes and again lost signal.
I don´t know what to do.
I've just noticed that my GPS is flakey... even when maps tells me to exit a certain road, sometimes it doesn't track me properly -- thinking maybe I stayed on the highway/etc. In my town we have an upper/lower level for I-35. My HTC One had no problem with this, but the G3 accuracy seems too poor for a lot of these complicated interchanges.

A few people (myself included) have noted the Compass is off. Does the compass point in the right direction as you're moving? I'm wondering if the compass pointing the wrong direction causes tracking issues when navigating...
Edit: To clarify, by "off" I mean the compass generally points 90 degrees or 180 degrees in the wrong direction.

I (and others) have tried GPS Toolbox, the three rotation calibration, the figure 8 calibration....I don't notice any difference - some say it fixes it for a very short period of time, but then goes back to being off.

I noticed on various custom ROMs for my M7 that I have similar issues with the compass... sometimes completely dead/static, and sometimes off just like this. I had identical problems with maps, where it thought I was jumping lanes. Apparently Maps uses some of that sensor info to figure out where you're at, even while driving.
Under the gesture menu I have use the recalibration there to fix the compass (for a while at least, haven't checked much today at work) but it got the compass to point the right way after finding a proper flat surface.

I tried that and it acted like it was going to give me a correct heading for about three seconds then quickly jumped back to being off by 90 or 180 degrees.
I exchanged my G3 in case it was a compass issue with just my phone, and the replacement does the same thing. The ATT and Verizon versions I played with didn't have the same problem (hence why I tried the exchange). Maybe it's related to the newer version of software our version has or something.
Damn, that's not a good sign.

Yeah, it's too bad too. I wound up exchanging the G3 for an S5. Between the compass (which wouldn't normally be a huge issue but I'm traveling on business three times in the next six months to big cities I've never been to before), the screen overheating warning (only happened a couple of times, but still), the lack of root (so far), and the new-ness of the phone and therefore lack of community support (and LG's general lack of quick support), I just don't have time to chance it with a new phone with so many unknowns.
Loved a lot of things about it, and who knows - in a few months when they've worked out all the kinks, maybe I'll sell the S5 and look into the G3 again (of course, by then, who knows what new phones will be announced..).
I can't go with the S5... I had to return it before this phone because it would skip during BT audio playback in my car. I tried 3 of them, all had the same issue :/

UMI Plus - GPS/Navigation Problems

Hello,
I get a GPS fix within 10 seconds. But with Maps, however, the signal jumps back and forth. Also, the signal does not show exactly the location, or a few meters away. These problems are probably also known to the UMI users. Somehow I have read what of MTK tools, where this problem can be fixed. Can someone post a tutorial, or link?
Thx.
Hi, looking forward to fix the same issue... Any news?

Gday mate,
I was having similar issues with my GPS jumping to the street next to me whilst driving and getting itself all turned around. The other issue I had was bluetooth would not connecting to my car, so I tried a few things on this list: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/fix-nougat-bluetooth-issues/
Specifically what seemed to fix my bluetooth AND GPS was this: (I also set the passcode on the car to '0000')
"This is a really good fix, confirmed to work by many people. To reset your Bluetooth settings, fire up the Settings app, and locate and tap on Backup & reset option. Now, touch ‘Network settings reset’, and then ‘Reset settings’. Confirm this on next screen. Note: This will reset all your settings related to WiFi, Bluetooth and mobile data. Keep that in mind. If you need WiFi urgently, then better do this later on."
The above made my GPS a bit more stable. Since then I have updated the device to the latest beta: PLUS.V3.02_20170208_c239v55_kw_u3_no-DB and GPS is working perfect now. Link from bencebacsi on UMi Forum: http://www.mediafire.com/file/hh1069alx7v8i6i/PLUS.V3.02_20170208_c239v55_kw_u3_no-DB.rar
Best of luck mate!

It's not usable for this problem.
I tested Faster GPS after rooted, MTK tools, Engineering Mode, and another more tools and tricks, and nothing helped me with better gps signal on my UMI plus.
In enginneering mode I deleted data from hot, cold, warm and full gps start without A-GPS started, A set position from detected position, download new satellites positions, then start A-GPS and it was same how before. GPS signal on Mediatek chipset is bad.
Sometimes I have fixed 12 satellites, another time zero satellites. Gps signal jumping from zero to good in the car, or outdoor.
