Opinions please on next phone - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone I have a question that I'd like opinions on if possible. I had a z5 compact and sold it because I wanted to try a nexus 5x. I loved the smoothness of stock Android but the size was just ridiculous for a 5.2" screen. So I gave the phone to my 14yo son who needed a phone after his Iphone 6 was acting up. I really miss the z5c and I'm using an old z3c right now. so I was all set to purchase the US model(even though no fingerprint reader) I didn't think it worked great anyway..but here's the thing, I know that htc, lg, and Samsung are coming within weeks. With my main criteria ease of use with one hand, the lg may be too big right of the bat. My hangup with Samsung is that the s6 I had, had terrible battery life and the lag because of TouchWiz. HTC has me intrigued but not sure about sense UI. So should I wait to see the actual phones when they arrive or is the z5c still a good contender? Part of me wants to just buy the z5c and wait for Marshmallow but part is still getting curious about the s7, even though my hunch is that the same old Samsung problems will be there,, or the m10 to see what it has going.. You know there is something to be said for having the latest hardware and software. What do you think?

stay with z3c and wait for snapdragons 820 devices

I think you should wait for a future compact phone.
The Z3C has solid battery life and performance. 720p screen and small, like the Z5.
Since the Z3C uses x86 Android and the Z5 uses x64 Android, you'll probably have more free RAM because both devices have 2GB of RAM. (Same happened between Nexus 5 and Nexus 5X).
My case: the best scenario for me is a Nexus device with [Moto_X/Z3C/Z5C/iPhone] size/resolution. The last one was the Galaxy Nexus (because Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 were too width for my hand).
I didn't buy a Z3C (I'm coming from a Nexus 5) because the price was near the Z5 Compact..It was like...400€ vs 550€ at that time.

If the 6.0 serving us well, then Z5c still a recommended choice but who knows.... we're still waiting......

Yes. Ideally it would be an easier decision if 6.0 were indeed out.. But...

In my case, Marshmallow will decide if I keep that Z5 I bought in October and is currently gathering dust... or if I sell it and buy a different brand.
The current firmware (Lollipop) is awful. My reccomendation: If Sony can get its sh*t together and release a proper 6.0 firmware , the Z5c is probably a good choice (price should drop when the Z6c is out)... but if Sony's iteration of Marshmallow firmware is as bad as Lollipop is on the Z5, STAY AWAY from Sony.
Back in October, I had to choose between a Z5, a Moto X Pure and a Nexus 6P. I finally got the Z5, and I've regretted that choice every single day since. I don't blame the phone though (hardware), but I blame the firmware quality and Sony who doesn't seem to care at all (Certains bugs were known and reported back in October. They're still present. That says a lot)
Wait for Marshmallow... then make a choice

It must be better, I didn't see one Marshmallow which is worse than Lollipop but I have no idea how great of MM on our Z5c. Since the Z5c still worth some money, if MM turn out not reach my expectation probably I will sell it out.
Overall 6.0 is good at battery and improved memory management, pretty sure issues like lagging and battery draining been fixed. The only problem is the camera.

There are very very few phones that can provide both one-hand-operating ability (or portability) and the real experience of a flagship if I don't consider Sony's compact phones. I may think that iphone 5s can do, but its battery life just sucked.
Well, you can take a look at z3c, that is able to flash to CyanogenMod and then get mostly the same experience with stock Android or even better, and as well as better battery life than z5c

I'm actually using the z3c now. There are things about the build quality that I like better in the z5c though. I don't flash or rom because.. Well I just don't know how and I don't think I really want to. Apple is coming out with with a 4" updated 5s on the 15th of March so this is yet another option but it IS an iPhone lol. Btw, thanks for the replies guys. Very helpful

Sold my S3 and now looking for an upgrade

Hi guys, I just sold my S3 LTE , as I cracked the screen and didn't want to repair it. I was looking for upgrade before that, so now the time has come.
I need a device that is a bit more rugged, not necessarily waterproof and so on... I read that the S4 is even more fragile though.
Anyway. I'd really love a high end device, so I don't have to upgrade it for the next 2 years.
I don't play games but do a lot of browsing, emailing and other work related stuff. I have good cameras so the camera on the phone just needs to be OK, but It should bebetter than the S3. I'm now using an iphone 5 and while it's a marelously well build and fast, I'm not quite sure I could deal with it's quirks. I've been on Android for almost 6 years, so you get what I mean.
I'm looking at :
LG G2 16GB
LG Nexus 5 16GB
Galaxy S4
Huaiwei Ascend P6
HTC ONE
Anything else you might recommend, except for Sony...

LG G2 - Very Good Choice
Nexus 5 - Awesome (but not the best camera)
S4 - Sucks
P6 - Friend has it, not bad, but battery life is terrible
HTC One - Awesome.
Also, look into the Xperia Z2, another good option for you.
Personally, i'd go with the new HTC one.

I really like the One too, but can you give some more details why would you choose it. And with the new model just around the corner - I'm no sure. I'm interested in the N5 too, bu tI'm put off by the small-ish battery
Friend of mine has the current One, played with it quite a bit. Its just everything i would want in a phone. Its really well made, fits very comfortably in your hand. I'm a fan of IPS LCD over AMOLED. Operations are much smoother and faster than Samsung. Blinkfeed is awesome (for me personally) and you have all the freedom of Android with a very good display incased in a very good body. Also i dont really need crap like airwave and air gesture, in fact, since 4.3 my smart stay barely works.
The One is just my personal choice, i think its the most balance between design, UI and performance. LG G2 isnt far behind. If you going to go with the One, u might as well wait for the new one. If you dont plan to get the new one, i'd probably go the G2 over the Old 1. The Snapdragon 800 will last u much longer than the 600 in the One (2013 edition) The G2 has IPS LCD as well and is very very fast. Only thing lacking is the aluminum body and blinkfeed. Also LG has a pretty good multi-tasking interface, it opens small windows of apps. I suggest you Check out YouTube for the G2.
Depending on how much you want to wait, you should definitely also consider the oppo find 7. This phone's a beauty in my eyes. Specs are great too.
Another interesting phone is the oneplus one with cm. Its going to be 5.5inch with the size of a 5 inch sony z1, qualcomm s800 and its supposed to cost less than 400$. Too bad that there arent any real pics yet and the release is going to be somewhere in Q2 of 2014. So, it can be 1 month or almost 3 :<
I would suggest you go for the All New HTC One or the Xperia Z2 ...both of the devices r going to hit the shelves with in weeks !!

I'm not buying a Sony, that's for sure. The htc one is another thing, but I'm afraid it will be quite expensive at launch, at least that's the way it is where I live. The way I see things is I have two options - get the G2 now or wait for the M8, hoping it won't be THAT expensive
Check out the oppo find 7! Big, cheap, blows everything away

Why does galaxy s4 sucks ? Although I do agree the design is same and somewhat boring especially when upgrading from s3 but its a practical design. For me, its best choice among the given choices, especially if you can get the qualcomm version, as its google play device so you have option to seamlessly put aosp roms. That negates the N5 advantage as it is..
For LG G2 and Nexus 5, you have limitation of fixed storage, do remember on 16GB devices you get only about 11GB of usable space. Also camera and battery on nexus 5 will be a downgrade for you coming from s3. HTC one although awesome design but has ultrapixel camera which didn't do very well and again a restricted memory.

The only reason I'm not sure I want the S4 is that it's deemed even more fragile than the S3. It's slower chipset is also a bit of a disadvantage.
I can get the qualcomm version, so yes - vanilla OS is possible.
As for the G2 - it's awesome and I don't think storage will be that much of an issue. The HTC one is also an option, but the same as S4 - slower chiset and I hera the camera just sucks, but I have a DSLR and a mirrorless camera so I'm not going to expect much from a phone camera anyway. I'm using the iphone 5 now and while typing on it is a real pain, the size is really nice refresh fromthe huge slate the S3 was. I really miss the huge screen though.
The whole thing is quite complicated, as my wife has the RAZR I, but wants an Iphone, so I got one to test it out while waiting for my next android, and I actually like it a lot but the battery is basically on par with the S3, but the screen.... it's so small. It's superior when it comes to actally using it as a phone.
Which one of these handsets is most durable when dropped? I think the g2 would have a bad time due to edge to edge design.

iphone 5s for durability.
For me:
1-Note 3
2-Sony Z2
3-Iphone 5s
4-S4
This year I am leaving my S3 also and this is the list of devices I am targeting of buying from !!
I will get one of these bad boys --->
1. Note 3 (appealing in every aspect)
2. HTC ONE 2014 (has microSD card support)
3. Xperia Z2 (Sony really stepping up their game)
4. iPhone 6 (a really good phone for basic telephony)
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
I recommend nexus & S4 from the point of view of a good battery and high specs and features, Also the nexus 5 has good feature which is wireless charging, The S4 has higher features than the nexus as usual samsung strikes with stunning technology.

I am getting a new phone in two months. Got an S3 now. This is my top choices :
1. Note 3
2. Xperia Z2
3 HTC one (2014)
4. S5
Very difficult to choose
I'm between n5 s4 and g2 for now...

i know a few people with S4's, both versions. They both completely suck. In all honesty, the design isnt that bad, it looks very similar to the s3 but the feeling is alot better. However, Samsungs OS skin just down right fails. The ui is laggy, and please dont say theres no lag. i dont know how people dont notice this crap. The UI lags. Maybe the galaxy s4 google play edition, is a viable option.
There is literally nothing that the S4 has over its competitors. If you compare it to the HTC one (2013), then really, the One beats it hands down. You really dont need crap like the air wave.
SGH-m819n galaxy mega running the megafire v5 rom. Ive had two people literally sell their note3 after seeing how big and fast my phone is. 60 dollar truly unlimited unthrottled LTE data on tmobiles network though metro is a pretty nice perk, too.

[Q] Should i buy the alpha today

Hello, i have read a lot good things about this device mainly i like it because of the size and build. Im looking for a device under 5 inches.
So based on the fact that samsung has discontinued this device is it still worth to buy it today?
You can get it around 300 euro so its a good price tag, the next alternative i can go is sony z3 compact.
thanks for your advice
best phone ever ... the best ............................................. 54000 antutu score more than htc one m9 or lg gflex 2
It's worth it imo, I have the device for like a month and it's performing incredibly good, love the cameras quality!
Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
I fully recomend you this phone. It's lightning fast, overall experience is great - outperforms other flagships and in my opinion looks amazing. Only drawback could be the battery, but if it will be a problem for you there is extended battery availible. Also there is not much development for it, but roms that exist are really good. Im sure it won't dissapoint you
Another user of the phone here that would suggest you buy it.

I say go for it. Battery is not much of an issue for me. I'm a medium/moderate user. I have the att model. Great size, portable, camera is good and specs is way sufficient. My only complaint, as well as many others with the att variant, there is no root available yet or ever.

[Rumors] finally some "real" rumors about the Z5 Ultra

As the title mentions rumors about the succesor for our ultra. I'm really anticipating on a succesor, i use my ultra now for 2 years. At this moment there is for me still no proper replacement on the market. If the rumors are true, i've found mine replacement
http://www.techtimes.com/articles/83269/20150910/sony-xperia-z5-ultra-with-snapdragon-820-chip-4k-display-23mp-camera-coming-march-2016.htm
Didn't read anything yet about a flash, but i can't imagine that they make such a monumental mistake again.
i can wait all day till they release Z5 ultra
I also have had this phone for 2 years now, and before that I use to upgrade my phones every 6-9months.. now I can't get over this phone
Article's description is too good to be true... The specs are awesome... Lets pray they release the real successor for our device!

Rumour like this have been spread all over the years since the Ultra came out. Most of em are click baits for more traffic to their websites or some people's imagination to 'satisfy' themselves since it is likely that the Ultra is Sony's first and last attempt of making a true phablet.
I personally think we won't see another 6.4 inch until the stylus game is making a comeback.

That's EXACTLY what I'm experiencing.
Galaxy S6, Note 5, Nexus 6, LG G4, Z5, HTC ONE, all fantastic performers, but....... Not a single one could convince me to leave the Ultra.
I've actually been tempted to buy another one just in case... [emoji16]
I desperately hope that Sony will not leave us hanging longer, 2.5 years are enough.
And as I said before, the Ultra was presented as a TOP performer, first with SD800, and reviewed by all as a beast, as a nerd wet dream, regardless of the flaws (big, awful camera, no flash etc).
They couldn't present it now with the SD810, it wasn't "one of a kind".
I just hope they're waiting the new processor and MWC to unveil the next gen of this beast.
I'm currently rocking a GPe based rom (Hybrid by Uncle Lucifer), and NOTHING is smoother.
Just imagine what could possibly be with SD820 and 4GB ram... [emoji33]
I personally don't care about the camera. If it's there, good, if it's a 13mpx, well that's enough for me.
I want a powerful device with a superb screen, and if they can make it smaller with the same 6.44 screen, good, if they can't and it's thicker with more battery, good, if they can't do that either and make it exactly the same phone with upgraded internals, I'm good with that too. [emoji16]

I remember everybody going on laughing at how big of a phone it is, I can't even begin to describe the mockery at work once I got it; then everybody tried it, and their freaking mouths went shut, and then open wide at how beautiful of a device it is.
It's big, yeah we get it, but it's slim, elegant, it makes you go "wow" once you play with it and also go "meh" every time you try something else.
I get that people want 5.5 screens, no bezels, something you can use with one hand, cameras that can spot an hair on a fly at 5 meters away, but those guys are not me.
SD820 might be the way for Sony to show once again they can pull off a trick with a device so powerful and so beautiful that you can't even begin to think to go somewhere else.
No matter what other OEMs have to offer.
No matter what other people say.
They should have a survey on Ultra owners, I bet that 90% of us would never change OEM if Sony guarantees a new Ultra every 2 years.

Should i buy a OnePlus 2 or 5X?

Hi all,
I am at a bit of a loss here. I am an avid Nexus user (see sig below) though i want to like the OnePlus 2 though i keep reading horror stories and concerns about throttling, charging and performance issues over time. It's like they made an awesome phone though failed with the software implementation.
I am hoping like a lot of issues on devices that the XDA community has addressed these problems with a nice Custom ROM..
Can people give me some honest feedback regarding their experiences? I have read a lot of reviews though its all using the Factory ROM. I want to know how good the device can be with a good community rom.
Please let me know thanks very much.
Buy a 6P or wait for the new nexus, really looking forward to get rid of my OPT.

OTP I've had too many small and big problems and bugs, I mean, the phone is usable but doesn't live up to it's specs and hype, software is the worst part of all, and if you are already a nexus user you will find annoying to wait for new versions of Android, also if you're into custom roms you should always stick to nexus.
And de 5X is too expensive for it's built and specs.
I mean personally I would think of other options, the Nexbit Robin seems really nice, or you can wait for the new phones that are coming.

You cannot go wrong with a Nexus - I am a OP 1 and 2 user. Came from Nexus 5(which still works).
OP2 now has everything working Custom ROM's but there are still niggles, which do not hamper you daily use. Community support is almost at par with Nexus. Fingerprint scanner is a bit fickle, I am having mine RMA'ed right now.
On the other hand... 5x is way to expensive for the specs being offered.. You could wait for new lineup this summer.. OP3, Motorola etc..
Obviously opt unless you want to settle for a less specifications mobile device for a higher price.
OP2 has better everything except OTAs which can be fixed with cyanogenmod. I'd pick up the OP2 or wait for the next nexus line.
Op2 is an awesome phone, just flash the latest hydrogen os build on it and compare it with a 5x... Everything in op2 is better even the camera...
Nexus 5X price is a joke. I would buy a N5 for 150$ before N5X lol
I wouldnt buy a phone with 2gb of ram and snapdragon 808 in 2016 anyways
I am also very satisfied with my 2. It just works rocking solid. And it has the best fingerprint Sensor out there, i really love it! So fast and accurate if you set it up correct.
But if i were you, i would wait for the 3. It should be out in july, so its not that long. If you want a phone now, just get the 2
got them both.
op2 has better specs.
5x feels cheaper, cooler, charges faster, has lower memory, lower ram, single sim and has a smaller screen.
both last 4-5hrs sot on my daily usage
personally i have my OPT on sale and have considered getting the nexus 5X instead (been some price drops here in uk). mainly because the OPT software is horrible, heats up quick, sluggish performance on stock rom, even though custom roms significantly improve the device its still doesnt feel like a flagship, i.e. some lag and small bugs here and there. in comparison my dads redmi note 3 and sisters OPO feel faster and snappier in comparison and in my side by side usage there both are smoother while scrolling.
also another thing ... people go crazy about specs and wanting a phone with the best possible hardware but they are forgetting the main thing the user experience. The oneplus 2 is culprit of this as it has the best specs but software is horrible that you are forced to use a custom rom
5x if the price is cheaper depending on your available sources. OPT very prone to fingerprint sensor failure and the RMA process apparently has been a nightmare to those unlucky enough to need a replacement or even any kind of hardware technical support really.
Go with anything other than OPT i regret now buying opt instead of Moto X variants or Nexus variant.
There is little to no support from the company for updates and they dont even release source code in time.
XDA community is there true but still isnt on par with devices who has their source code released.
It's been posted but compare the two and see what ya come out with.. On paper the OP2 is the better phone. I'm glad I got mine. I was down to the Nexus 6 or OP2 and I'm glad I did.
I'm sure your gonna root the thing.. So CM and updates will flow... So yeah.. Get the OP2
And despite what you have been told.. Oxygen 3.0 is a damn nice ROM. I was a slim ROM freak and I'm satisfied and very happy with MM update.. Yeah it's beta but it's rock solid.
Hell.. I would get a OPO over the 5X
Wait for new device.
A lot of users thinks oneplus2 is failed in China, me too.
Wish Oneplus3 will be better.
I am still with my OPT just because of the ability to use two SIM cards. That's just way more practical for combining work+private SIM. Atleast I prefer it over having to take two phones with me.
So if it wasn't for that, I would still be using my Nexus 5X, since there's just way better software support.
I hope the OnePlus 3 will change that.

Why is this phone so abandoned? :'(

Hi guys,
I feel it's really sad to see there are so few options to mod our Xperia phone.
I think Sony made a great phone with pretty good OS and feature set, as well as design, but we have almost zero modding options.
There's no official TWRP, which seems odd since there's an official one for the much similar Xperia X Performance...
Also, no Lineage, no custom ROMs other than a few ones that aren't really famous and well known like Lineage or others.
Do you guys know why is this phone so underrated? Is it so difficult to port ROMs to or are there just a few users?
Cheers
PS Still hope for an official Lineage/TWRP port... fingers crossed for now
Well there are two stock based roms and OmniRom for the xx, which is not too bad. There are also at least two twrp versions around that are not official, but do what they need to do. If you are used to Lineage you'll like Omni!
That said, Sony had hoped to sell double the number of devices in the x-series as they actually did. Unfortunately demand is not so high for midrange phones that perform as good as last year's premium phones.

I actually think that the demand for mid-rangers are actually fairly high if it was at the right price bracket.
The Xperia X with its $899 or was it $799NZD was actually on par with discounted flagships like the regular 32GB S7 making it a bad buy.
Likewise, I bought this phone when it was on special at $549 and while it's not exactly cheap, that is the price it should honestly be sold at.
It was a touch below the price of the Galaxy A5 2016 making this phone the more appealing premium mid-ranger.

I agree that the xx was too expensive when it was introduced. I also bought it after the price had dropped .
Seriously guys? I actually got mine for a pretty good price (320 euros). That's not a lot for the phone's specs tbh.
Anyway I agree that there's some TWRP around, but how deep can a user trust a dropbox-hosted custom recovery made by who knows...
Not to disrespect by any means the dev behind it, but being this my main phone I'd prefer a more official recovery.
Also gotta try this OmniRom, seems a good project, but still no way of trying it without the proper twrp.

I know right? I do not understand how they paid so much for this thing. I payed 320 months ago. Now it goes for as low as 280! For that price, you cannot get a better deal unless you want some chinese stuff. Personally I spent months researching phones at that price and this was the best.

Yeah it's a damn good deal at 300, and keep in mind i bought it some months ago when it was even better.
That being said the development behind it is terrible

to answer you question, you have to consider SONY's health as business entity! the company had 2.3+ Billion losses in 2015 even with z5 and z5p on their side! (there are many reasons for that)
1. they don't usually link their devices with careers (like samsung does)
2. only gsm
3 poor marketing (the biggest)
4 drmkeys concept (for developers)
now when Xperia X was launched when sony dumped whole Z project and never released Z6 , (may be XZP is another name of z6p) . also X was never released in many countries! in my country there is no Xperia dealer and i order them from dubai.
when extremely talented devices gets extinct, you don't see much activity in developer world also! , If you wana see the most successful and popular ever xperia! , in my opinion Xperia Z (C6602/03 ) is the king. there are so many roms, tweaks, recoveries, for that device! Sony was down very well that time!
now, coming back to X, i have X, its nice phone, today got 7.1.1 from sony. so they haven't completely abandon it; its just its not a very popular device in developer world
I got my XX almost a year ago. Used it like 4 months as my only phone, then as a jukebox when I got a Honor 8 and then an OnePlus 3T, those are good phones but there's something I like of my Xperia X, that's why I installed an Android 7.1.2 concept ROM and I'm using it again. Can't believe the screen is sharper and clearer in the sunset than the OP3T! Also, audio and video recorder is superior than Honor 8 and OP3T.
Even if I hate the fingerprint scanner location, I like my Xperia and I'm currently using it as my daily phone again, while I'm experimenting with the OP3T.
Too bad developers don't have too much interest on this nice piece of phone.
