Stuck at EDGE speeds i545 GSM overseas - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am using my i545 overseas, with a non - Verizon SIM card. I am stuck on EDGE speeds. I don't want LTE, just 3G and UMTS.
Apart from the speed, the phone works perfect, phone calls are OK, internet works (@ low speeds). My local carrier has the same bands in 3G and UMTS as AT&T, so it's 850/1900, and I know the i545 works with that bands.
I am on Stock Android 5.0.1 Baseband I545VRUGOC1 and have root access and hidden menus enabled.
Am I missing something here? Need help, as EDGE speeds are too low for me. Just to be clear, this is not a "low reception zone" or anything like that.
Looking forward to your help.

Nevermind, solved it with the engineering menu: *#27663368378#

Hello could you explain more precisely how you did to make it work. Thanks

Yes, of course.
1-. First you have to enable hidden menus:
-. Change the contents of /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu from OFF to ON (you have to do this by open it and edit it)
-. Save
-.Reboot
2-. Enter engineering menu dialing *#27663368378#
3-. Then go:
[1] UMTS --> [1] DEBUG SCREEN --> [6] PHONE CONTROL --> [7] NETWORK CONTROL --> [2] BAND SELECTION --> [2] WCDMA Band Preference --> [6] WCDMA ALL
After selecting that, phone will connect to selected WCDMA Bands.
I think you DON'T need to be rooted to do this, but it always helps.

Can't get AT&T 3G?

I managed to unlock my Vibrant, but I can't seem to get AT&T 3G on it. Do I need to change done settings to get it to work?
Its only works where AT&T only runs its 1900 MHz band but AT&T mostly runs 850 MHz which the Samsung vibrant does not have. I think the original Samsung galaxy s has it but not us.

Check the bands for this and the att version of the galaxy the ones that are the same are the ones that yours will work on, seems like it would have been easier to get the att galaxy s
You can get 3g by ATT if it is there (available)
This is where you got to go to nmodify the bands and force the phone to recognize. I have used this in Hawaii so, I know it does work. You have to lock the band that is sending the 3g. The Vibrant has Quad band so you just need to know which one is the one they are using.
Okay…so do at your own risk. You can go back and set the phone to its default automatic gsm/cdma settings.
Dial: *#*#197328640#*#*
Click [1] debug screen
Click [8] phone control
Click [7] network control
Click [2] band selection
This is where you make a change, default setting is [1] automatic, which means it chooses automatically between gsm/cdma (Edge vs 3g). So we are going to change this and set it to wcdma band which is 3g.
Click [2] wcdma band
Click [1] wcdma all []
Now it should display “select wcdma all bands [*]"
Now on the bottom of your phone, click the menu key, it’s the one next to the home key, now click back, menu again one more time, back one more time, this is just to confirm it set to number 2 wcdma band.
Now click menu key one last time, click end.. and you are done. Now to double verify that the phone is locked into 3g, dial in: *#*#4636#*#*
Then click phone information Then scroll down to “set preferred network type” It should now have listed “wcdma only.” PS, if you tried to do a shortcut, and just set wcdma this way first without doing the lock above, it would just go back to gsm/cdma auto once you exit the screen.
Good luck

That is my understanding as well. The FCC reports shows AWS and 1900MHz. No 850MHz.

Pretty sure 1900MHz AT&T 3G worked automatically once I unlocked the phone.

[Q] Default to HSPA+

hey all,
looking at getting this phone this weekend, but curious about the LTE.. I live in a rural area that doesnt have LTE, we will be on HSPA+ for a while yet. Carrier is Telus in Nova Scotia.
I have read that LTE is a bit of a battery hog, if there is no LTE in my area will the phone keep hunting for LTE?
Can i "disable" LTE and have it default to HSPA+?(primarily for battery consumption)
Thanks
EDIT: sorry i just notice the post about questions going in the Q&A, sorry, if a mod could move it, that would be great
Yes you can disable it. which carrier are you with?
Hi, I have the AT&T S3 and I've used the code *#2263# and selected WCDMA and the frequency, and now it stays on HSPA
I hope it helps!
Thanks thats what I was getting at (wasn't sure if you guys had that option or not) OP there is your method.
You can also get the app Phone Info to change your settings
Excellent Info! Thanks
Do you think the battery life will be better ?

I don't see any other options.

Same here.

There was a way to get out of this before, I think it involves you taking out your sim card.
Ah, here it is. Try this!

Does this mean that some ATT phones have a different modem than other supposedly identical ATT phones??
i found there is no need to use codes, etc
Settings > More Settings > Mobile Networks > Network mode
Gives you 4 options
GSM/HSPA/LTE (Auto Mode)
GSM/HSPA (Auto Mode)
GSM Only
HSPA Only

For ATT phones this option is locked out. FYI. Tmo, Sprint and Verizon it's prolly not. Only annoying thing about ATT's version so far. My HOX is the same way.
Root and you can access it I think.

Hi, I'm using the At&t version of the S3 on another network (Claro) and the code works. Maybe something is different because of that?
Are you guys using this like I said earlier?

I tried this one but it doesn't work for me. I see the information and can run ping test but if I try to make a band change the new selection is not applied.
I'm only able to change it using *#2263# :/
Ohhhhhhh....OK.
idk *#2263# isnt working at all on my att phone.

Can AWS frequency be enabled on S3 i9300?

Hi,
I saw that some Samsung phones (Note, Note 2, S2 LTE, S2 HD LTE) can enable AWS frequency.
Can the same be done for S3 i9300?
thanks in advance,
*#197328640# or *#*#197328640#*#*
[1] Debug Screen -> [8] Phone Control -> [7] Network Control -> [2] Band Selection -> [4] Combi Bands = Tick option [7] WCDMA 1700 (FDD IV)
if u see the asterisc beside that option the frecuency it's enabled..
There was no asterisk on that band, I enabled it so the asterisk showed up.
I rebooted the phone and the asterisk was still there.
However, it doesnt seem to help, the sim card still doesnt register on the network

For me I go to the Phone keypad and type *#27663368378# > UTMS > Debug Screen > Phone Control > Network Control > Band Selection. That will get you to the band selection part, but you could go to LTE Band Preference and keep on LTE B4 (band 4). If you're on band 4 only, you will only have data.
