Launcher for NOT rooted Verizon V10 - Verizon LG V10
I'm looking for a launcher that will work well with the Verizon V10 which is not rooted. I've always used Nova on my previous Samsungs. But with the V10 I'm having problems such as an inability to keep a record of the number of texts, phone calls etc, except on the lock page. There is also the issue of widgets being "buried" under windows unless made smaller, and a seeming inability to add app notifications to the lower bar.. There is an overall feel they are not "made for each other".
I had a similar experience with Sola launcher.
My primary wish is to be able to add more fonts to the very skimpy choices made available by LG, change icons and names and size icons.
Is anyone using a launcher on their VZ V10 without the above Nova problems and with the ability to add fonts and icons?

Long time Nova user, now using it on V10. I'm not entirely sure I understand the issues that you're having.
For example, when you say 'keep a record of the number of texts, phone calls, etc..." are you talking about missed calls/texts, etc. ? Because I'm not having any issues with that. I'm also not sure what you mean by 'adding app notifications to the lower bar'. If by lower bar you mean the dock area, and again, if you're talking about e.g., missed calls, texts, etc., they are working for all apps I use, including those that I have in the dock area.

My experience with the Nova Notifier is that it is not registering text messages, nor voice mails although I didn't have this problems with my Samsungs. Whether it's really Nova, or Verizon's endless efforts to lock up their phones, I'm not sure.
What I meant by hiding the widgets is this: when you tap the LG circle with dots to see all installed apps and widgets, there are two tabs - one for apps and the second for thumbnails of all widgets loaded directly and loaded by apps.
But after I installed Nova there was only one tab for apps and it did include the two specific widgets I had been using. I eventually discovered that if you minimize all the screens, there is an icon for widgets and it shows everything. But they were hidden from my view until I discovered this.
However, being unable to get the notifications right was still a grave concern and so I'm sadly looking further.
As per the previous answer, I have installed Apex. It doesn't seem to provide as many options but if the notifier works, that will be a big step. I tried Nova twice and had the same difficulties with notification so I'm hesitant.
Are you using Verizon or might this be the result of different carriers "adjusting" different things? Or....I did something wrong?

I'm on Verizon as well.
Nova gets to widgets differently than the LG launcher, you don't do it from apps. You can get there a couple ways, the easiest is to long-press your home screen until the 'previews' screen comes up and then hit Widgets (screen shot attached). Make sure the default behavior is set accordingly.
For notifications, do you have Tesla Unread installed and configured correctly? More relevant screen shots attached.
Finally, you may want to hit the Nova forum on XDA, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389071 lots of good info there.

Thanks so much for the screen shots - I found my icons and put them in place in a two minutes!
BUT - I'm getting the counter for messages on the lockscreen and it is counting correctly. I cannot get a counter for messages on the bottom bar of the home screen. In your example you have counters on BlueMail and on the Email app. I've kept the bottom bar that is under the page dots.
I went to my apps and moved the messaging app to the home screen. I then removed the text. I then dragged it to the bar under the page dots. It will bring up my messages but it doesn't get "notified" of the number of unread messages I have. Am I supposed to use another kind of icon? I don't have a messaging widget. Do you also have a lock screen and do you get your notification numbers there as well?
I couldn't get a screenshot of the lockscreen but here is a screenshot of my homescreen which I'm about to put together again with Nova. Well I guess not, it won't paste. I hope my verbal description was clear enough

I'm using the Verizon message+ app instead of the yellow LG, not sure if that matters. It was preloaded and is decent.
One thing to check, take note of whether the settings in your sms app might be marking your text messages as 'read' after previewing them on your lock screen.
Other than that, you might want to reset your Nova settings to default. Not sure if it matters or not, but I do have Nova set to Aggressive Desktop.

The settings on the sms app WERE to be marked as read after appearing on the lock screen. And I didn't even want them on my lockscreen! Reset and all is well. Thank you so much for sticking with these issues and figuring out ways for me to resolve them. Nova is really fast on the V10 and such a good launcher. I'm glad I'm able to use it. BTW, I use 1Weather also - it's great fun!

I know I'm late to the game and you got it working because after reading post 1 I was also going to say I had no issues with Nova Prime. I ran Nova the first couple weeks on my V10 but since then I've been running TSF. I've always gone back and forth between Nova and TSF and so far I'm really digging TSF on the V10.
I'm sorry if I'm a little late to the game as well, but I had the same problem with the notifications on my Samsung Note 2. I ended up getting an app called "Missed It!" from the Play Store. After adding apps to it's settings, I was getting accurate notifications in icons. It's even listed in Nova settings as an alternative to TeslaUnread. You may want to try it.

Messages notification not displaying.
No matter what I do, what setting I choose or how I attempt to make it work, I cannot figure out how to get the notifications to show on my messages icon like I am used to with stock GB. When I get a new txt, it shows in the notifications bar, but unless I check it, I don't know I have a new txt. Is it me, ICS or the rom I'm on? Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA
It's actually the launcher you're using. Most(if not all) launchers(and all popular ones) require an upgrade from the free version to be able to see an actual notification count on the icon itself. I know for a fact this is the case with Apex and Nova. Solutions: Buy the paid version of the launcher you're using from the Play Store. Rely on notifications bar/clicking the icon to tell you whether you have new messages.
Couple questions about my new Galaxy S3...
So far I love the phone. This is the only phone I've had in a long time where I haven't wanted to load a custom rom the day I got it. There's just one thing I don't know if there's an option for, and something else I'd like to change that I hope it easy being rooted. 1. Is there a way to make the vibrate patterns apply to text messages? So far they only seem to apply to incoming calls. 2. The little dots on the bottom that show what page I'm on. Can I get rid of those or move them to the top of the screen? ok, there's a 3rd I guess. The green phone icon, is there an EASY way to change that? Not thrilled about a couple others either like the contacts one. Don't know if there's a simple way to go in and swap out the image file for a different one or not. On my Galaxy tablet I was able to go in and create custom icons on the computer and use a program on the tab to select what program I wanted it to open, but that was a long time ago and I forgot how to do it, or what programs I used. If that's what it comes down too though, guess that's what I'll have to do. Just wanted to know if there was an easier way. I don't mind the icons themselves, just the colors. Not a fan of green or orange. Blue would be nice. Thanks in advance for any help on these. Besides this stuff, absolutely LOVE the phone...

I don't see any place in the touchwiz messaging app's settings to customize the vibrate pattern for texts... some possible solutions would be a custom ROM with the stock google messaging app rather than the touchwiz app, or somewhat less extreme would be to install a 3rd party texting client from the play store and see if that setting is present in that app. 2. I'm not sure if the touchwiz launcher allows you to hide or remove those little indicator dots, but you can open up a million options for homescreen launcher settings by installing a 3rd party launcher from the play store like Nova Launcher or Apex Launcher. Currently I'm using Apex and it is great (still rocking the stock experience until CM9 gets a stable release). 3. As for changing icons like the phone, calendar, calculator, etc. This is another thing that can be customized using a launcher like Apex.

Have heard others complain of this issue, so I don't believe that there a way to do it. Don't use that feature myself so... 2. Again, I'm not sure, but I think you're stuck with them. You could use a launcher that allows more customization. I like apex. 3. Download an app called "icon changer" and a icon pack or theme with the icons you would like to use. You can then open the application and select the app you want to change the icon of and pick a new icon. It will create a shortcut of the app with the custom icon on your home screen. Great for changing icons on your home screen if you want to remain using TW. If you decide to use an alternate launcher like apex this feature is already integrated and you have the ability to switch the icons within the app drawer as well. Thanks for the quick replies. Trying to stay away from a custom rom on this phone. There's just nothing I'm really unhappy with that much. There's always something that goes wrong when I load one. Not saying there's ANYTHING wrong with the roms themselves, there's just not that much on this phone I'm not happy with, unlike phones I've had in the past. I'm coming from a Desire. Thanks for the Icon Changer app also. Changing them on my tablet was a pain in the butt, this was nice and simple. Any way you know the dimensions of the icons though so I can create some of my own?
Nova Launcher vs. Go Launcher. Why Nova?
I'm a long-time Go Launcher user (Launcher Pro user before that) and lately much hype has surrounded Nova Launcher so I decided to give it a shot. After playing with it for part of a day I'm wondering what all the fuss is. So far, Go Launcher seems to provide everything Nova Launcher does. In fact, for free it provides features you can only get for the premium version of Nova. What am I missing here? Nova Comments: 1. It doesn't feel as responsive as Go Launcher. 2. My contact icons have no images while they do automatically on Go Launcher. 3. It has the same bug as Go Launcher with not being able to display the text for widget descriptions (when selecting widgets). 4. No real themes. The reason I'm asking this is that I use swipe up for my dock apps to do multiple things and that feature is only a pay feature. If there's a compelling reason to stick with Nova then I'll buy it. However, since it's not just a buck or two I wanted this to be a good choice and not just an impulse buy that I never use again. Thanks.
I'd rather go for nova cause I like the UI of the settings more, and the GO Launcher has to much advertisement stuff. But I still think that apex is even better, It's IMO faster, and better responsiveness. Sent from my awesome fridge

I'll look at Apex but regarding Go Launcher being bloatware, so far that's not an issue for me. It runs great on my RAZR. Still nothing solid on why Nova is better.
Nova has options to import desktop data from other launchers, and options to backup desktop data and restore, although I'm not sure if you can do that on go launcher. Sent from my awesome fridge

Yeah, Apex is identical to Nova. If you compare the latest version of both Apex and Nova, Nova is little smoother than Apex. But I like Apex more. I used Go for at least 6 straight months on my Galaxy S2, but since then they have gone too much bloated.
On my device go launcher is slow as hell. I actually want to like go launcher because of all the features but it slows my phone down and takes up wayyyyy to much memory. Nova or apex are lightning fast and put everything right where I need it. Sent from my myTouch 4g using Tapatalk 2

The reason I'd consider it is that bloat (even though I'm not seeing it yet so any details there might help) is nothing I'm a fan of having come from an OG Droid. Sooner or later you run into issues. Are there solutions to the issues I've mentioned? For example, can I get the widget menu to show text? I can't believe all three have this issue and have had it forever. Is there a way to get my contacts to have their Facebook profile pictures as they do in Go Launcher?

Yes, the new update of Nova does bring some new features like icon gesture feature and all, but it's not the case of 'how many' features, but 'how good' are they. Like I am having constant crashes for unread notifier in Nova since last update, on Apex you don't even need to install any third party app/plugin for unread notifications. I also like how Apex grids the icon on desktop when big grid size is applied. I like how Apex re-size the icon and also re-size it's level, while Nova doesn't re-size the level. What is Icon Gesture Feature? Is that swiping up or down on any icon regardless of where it is? I use swipe up for some of my dock icons (swipe up on Phone and I launch People.... swipe up on Maps and I launch Navigation). 2. I noticed that on Nova my widgets seemed oddly shaped (4x4). On Apex they're just as I'm used to them on Go Launcher. Is this related to the grid issue you mentioned? If not, how can I see what you mean? 3. What do you mean by resize a "level"???
First off all, very good decision on buying Apex, and also taking Nova in consideration.

You can then choose any option you want. But so far I've seen it only works upwards, Swiping right, left or downwards don't work.
2- Yes, I think that is due to the grid size. I like how Apex reacts on grid size than Nova.
3- By level I mean the app names along with them. You see that if you set icon size to 75% on Nova the icon will get smaller, but weird thing is the name level will remain of same size! Which looks pretty bad. On Apex, the level also changes along with icon size, which looks good.

Click to collapse Yep, that's what I thought. I don't use it for anything outside the dock so, for now, no need. Thus Apex meets the demand. I also finally figured out how to see the text for widgets by using the Root Helper option. Finally! The only confusion was the note about installing Apex as a system app but they don't really tell you why you'd want to do that. For now the only reason seems to have an alternative to the first option for widget interface. The last thing I really need to resolve are my contact images. Go Launcher is able to see the contact images from Facebook. Apex apparently can't so nearly all my contact icon images are just the default black silhouette on a blue background icons. Very boring. There has to be a way to feed these profile pictures to these icons but short of saving each one as an image manually and then applying it, I don't see a simple solution.
Can't you just assign images with something like Haxsync so the images are saved on to your contacts forever?

I also just found that Friendcaster does it too. Good to go on this. Interestingly now another issue has cropped up. I'm now noticing home page refreshes which I didn't notice before. I see this is an issue with Apex. Hopefully it's fixed soon. I dumped Launcher Pro over that issue long ago.
I was a long time Go Launcher person since its release until they changed the UI earlier last year. At first the UI was full of bloat and slow, but since I use the latest betas from there blog site I don't run in to the bloat issue. Other then Go Launcher, Nova and SSL Launcher are my favorite launchers. Nova has normal android animations and is very user friendly, and if you know how to use nova's extra labs options you get more out of it. The problem with Go Launchers new UI, and which I have been complaining about on there blog since day one is that creating widgets/Apps from the home screen in landscape mode changes the orientation of the screen to portrait mode. Its absolutely ridiculousness. If I have my phone in landscape its there for a reason, so don't force users to change to portrait! It doesn't help that you can't add them from the app drawer but being a GNote user I prefer to hold my phone in landscape to take advantage of the real estate. Another minor issue I found is that Go Launcher does not play nice with Multi-Live Wallpapers. I honestly don't like how they shifted their focus on releasing a new launcher called Next Launcher that really isn't that good and in early development. Go Launcher was named the most best launcher of 2011-2012 by popular vote on LifeHackers, so there was really no reason to stop and work on something else when they were doing so good. Hopefully future Go Launcher Development doesn't suffer from it. I would love to use it again but not until they fix the orientation issue. And yes they are well aware of that issue, I have been posting the complain every time they release a new beta version so at some point they will listen. Hello XDA I’ve been away from android for some time; switched to iPhone for a bit, from the htc evo 4g. I have switched to Verizon and the galaxy s4 sense then and I want to make some changes to my phone (hence the post). I have rooted my device but haven’t put any custom roms or kernels on my s4 just different launchers. Here is a list of thing I want to change: Quick disclaimer: some of my wording may be off, I don’t have my phone in front of me to check everything and do proper background research Phone UI-I want to change the phone app entirely. Its ugly it’s white and it’s [for lack of a better word] fat and cartoonish. I hate the stock dialer and the in-call ui. It has to go; please if nothing else give me some ideas on how to change this! Im using ex dialer and contacts but that doesn’t change the in call experience. Unread Notifications- I’m currently using nova launcher prime and action launcher pro the kicker is that neither have a proper unread counter for calls texts and emails. Nova works the best because it does in fact have an unread counter but it only works for phone and texts but not for Samsung emails which I use for both my Gmail and my exchange emails. It irks me; I’ve emailed the developer but haven’t heard anything back from him. Wi-Fi- is there a way to move/add wifi to the notification panel? The panel being the quick access buttons on the top of the notification scroll down. I hate that is “floating” in the other part of the notification list. Volume- how can I get rid of the volume alert I get when I have something plugged in to the headphone port? I feel that it’s the dumbest warning in the world and it’s even more annoying because it keeps coming back after each reboot (I think). We aren’t 5 years old we already know that loadnoises arnt good for our ears… App drawer icon- I love the touchwiz app drawer icon and that’s probably the only thing I can’t live without. I’ve got a similar icon from a touchwiz icon pack but it’s not the same one. How can I extract it from touch wiz so that I can use it with various roms or launchers? Google play- I buy things from Google play every now and again and would like to continue to do so. The only problem is, is that I can’t move the content over to the SD card I would like to store it there because 16gb can only hold so much. I saw that someone figured out how to move Google play music over to SD which is great but I want my magazines and movies on the SD too. I would like to keep as many Samsung features as I can when I rom my device I enjoy a lot of the Samsung gimmicks that came with it; such as multi-window and the smart stay, view, scroll and pause it’s fun to play with. Are there specific roms and kernels I need to use for my specific device? If so please refer me to the thread. Is there a rom that adds a professional and sleek look to the device and adds the discussed features from above? If so what is it and where can I get it!? [Q] Stock JB, Carbon/PA and Badges or Unread Count
Hello All, I've been running Stock JB for a while and I just flashed houstonn's Carbon 4.3. It works great is very smooth and stable. However, It looks like the Email, Phone and SMS apps in Carbon do not have unread count / badge displayed in launcher or dock. The stock version's corresponding apps do display unread count as little red circle on the icons. I am not sure if this is because of the launcher or what. It appears that badge/unread count may not be available for any AOSP based ROMS? Please correct me if I am wrong. Does any one know if ParanoidAndroid apps (or other ROMs) display badge/unread/missed count? It looks like Apex Prime or Nova Prime launcher claim to have this feature, but I have not tried them yet. I want to check here first to see that the deal is if I want badge/unread/missed count on apps. What are my options? 1. Does PA or any other rom support this? 2. New Launcher? Which one? 3. New E-mail/Phone/SMS apps? Which ones? 3. Some how obtain stock apks? Thanks in advance for your help. SV.
Nova Prime works well, had the Gmail count hang up a few times showing unread when there wasn't.

Things I've tried so far Just thought I'd update with what I found so far. Thanks for Nova recommendation. 1. Notifyer - sort of works, but very unreliable. 2. Nova Prime + TeslaUnread - Works with Stock Email/Phone/SMS/K9. Does NOT work with Emoze. Also, The bade doesn't really show "unread" count. It just shows the same count as the notification bar. If you clear the notification from the notification bar, the badge also disappears. This defeats the whole purpose of the "unread" badge for me. If I get 10 messages and I clear the notification but only read one message, the badge is gone! Next up is Apex Paid and Apex Notifier. I'll also try Missed It (not really a "badge", but a widget).
Apex and Missed It I've tried the latest version of Missed It. It does work, but with a couple of really big flaws. Problem 1: If I clear notifications from the status bar, the count is cleared from Missed It as well. Kind of pointless to have this app if all it does is mirror the notification bar. Problem 2: E-mail Count is wrong. I have more than one account configured in e-mail. I've tried multiple event settings set to all three different settings, but no dice. It appears that the stock e-mail app sends notifications with number of unread mails every time it gets a bunch of new e-mails. But it sends one notification per account. So count as single or multiple probably doesn't work since it sends only one notification if more than one new mails arrive at the same time. Count as value does not work since it sends one notification per account, so the last account notification overwrites previous. Count as value can work if it is additive. Note that Missed It is supposed to provide counts for Nova Prime, but I didn't bother with config since it does not work for me. The last one that I've tried (and it worked) is Apex Pro. Don't know why I didn't try this first. Works right out of the box. Note that a companion app called Apex Notfiier must be installed. But is all seamless and works great with AOSP dialer, SMS, Calendar and E-Mail. On dialer, it clears the count if I clear the notification bar or open the dialer, which I think is ok. It does the proper thing for SMS, E-mail and Cal and retains the true count as report by the app. It is supposed to work with few other email clients including K9 but not with Whatsapp, facebook etc. So, I stuck with Apex Pro ($4) in the end. Not sure why this is not native to Android since the badge/unread is very useful. Hope this helps others. Sarat On a different note, I couldn't find a decent email app that combines exchange 2010 + POP3/IMAP so I had to stick with Stock. Stock works fine, but limited in its user interface and tweakability. Be careful with Emoze as everything is routed through their servers in Israel.
Holo Launcher HD Plus supports this. Worked well when I tried it, but I keep some messages unread, so always seeing the red circles on my dark themes annoyed me. Lol Sent from my LG Optimus G using Tapatalk
