I was just at my folks' house for the holiday weekend and realized that my dad has been using my old Sprint Evo 3D. My job took my to Shanghai last summer for ten months, so I picked up a GNex and left my Evo in a box at my parents' house when I left the country. I was surprised to see my dad using it, and I noticed it's running a very old version of cyanogenmod. I'm sure that thing is pretty buggy in terms of software compatibility by now, so I want to get him on something a little more current and stable.
He is not tech savvy at all, so simpler is better. I've been exclusively on Nexus devices for over a year now, so I'm pretty out of the loop in terms of what is happening with Sense and the rom options available for this phone. Should I just return him to stock and make sure he has all the OTA updates? Or is there another option that anyone can recommend? Ideally, whatever I put on there should require as little maintenance/upkeep as possible. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi,
It only depends on what your dad is going to prefer.
I think is now ok with cyanogenmod look so you can give a try to Johnylist roms where almost everything is working on last android version, but needs to be often updated
If you are looking for a stable rom with everything that works, including 3d then for me, best sense roms are actually yoda's or coolexe's ones.
I think a sense 3.6 based rom is the better choice for your dad.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll read through some of these threads and see what looks best for him. Do Johnylist roms have integrated OTA updates, or would the updates need to be downloaded and flashed in recovery?

I'm running Dirty Unicorns with 4.2.2 and haven't had a single issue. That being said, if someone who isn't tech savvy is taking over my phone, I'm putting it to a stock (rooted obviously) rom. Remove any stock apps that aren't necessary and go with it. It's going to be the most stable and trustworthy. Even the best ROMs like CM and such have the occasional hiccup that could render the device useless in the hands of someone without the know how to get it going again.
Hi guys, kindly take my post serious, and give me honest opinions, let me explain my situation.
Like many of you, I have LG G2, International 802, i am confused whether to flash 4.4 Custom ROM (CM11 seems to be only relaible choice) or stay at stock 4.2.2 because phone is just a phone and all Apps work anyway.
Unlike most of you, i am from Pakistan, i purchased G2 brand new in Black, because its not launched officially here, which means i am under no warranty or unroot problems to get repairs etc. from company, so losing warranty is not an issue for me.
I am confused, whether to root, flash CM 11 or stay on stock and wait for official 4.4. I know even official 4.4 will look same as 4.2.2. Stock android look like Nexus is my preference, i like it, but reading so many people having troubles with custom ROMSs, and the difficulty, makes me confused, either to stay as it is, or make a move and flash CM11.
My past experience of flashing ROMs, was when i had back up Xperia 10 mini, i use to flash CM9 on it easily and use to go back on stock as well, which android 2.1 for it.
Guys kindly with your experience, should i go for flashing, install CWM recovery, official semi touch one and flash CM11 in normal way, or should i stay satisfied as i am today? will flashing CM11 and its bugs going to ruin my daily use?
Also tell me, i read intensively how to come back to stock, but many people having trouble in that as well?
Should i make a move or should i sit idle? I know many users like me, must confused like me, your help can be fruitful for us?
I'd say go for cleanrom or rayglobe and find some mods for stock lots of things you can do with xposed

Thanks for your kind reply, being less familiar with ROMs, i assume that CM11 is the best and relatively more professional then most other ROM developers, i feel there product have more chance of being less buggy, thats what i assume, since going closer to stock android is my goal, not the tweaks as yet, in hate i hate processor option in CM11, why a user need to mess with clocking. I can be wrong here, frequent ROM user must know better which ROMS are more stable.
Xposed, i think i can use that with stock LG ROM as well, well i don't want to change menu bar and notification bar because i read in xposed forums, lots of people are having not to smooth time with it, it must be ok but i am ok without it, smaller bar or normal bar. Only thing i dont like about LG stock menu bar is, no multitasking key.
So you suggest me, to dive into a custom rom and you prefer a clean ROM for me.

I miss look and feel of stock android, stock is LG is sort of rip off, of Touch Wiz, i don't need air gestures, i need smoothness, fluidness, i like dark colours of stock pull down bar, and other things of my friends Galaxy Nexus.
The first thing I did after verifying the G2 I received was a keeper (first one was a dud) was install a different rom. I went though several 4.3 roms and even tried some of the 4.4 roms that came out but in the end as of right now I running a lite version of the stock rom (Malladus). I didn't think I would ever run stock but I found a lot of the features I enjoyed with custom roms I was able to get by using Xposed and stock seemed to be more stable and I really wanted a fully functional camera. Even though there are still a few things about the stock rom I don't like, they are very minor and i can live with them.

Well, thanks for the reply, i know stock has features, most i don't use, incredibly i don't knock on either, as i got use to of buttons, yeah, call and sms blocker, i hope CM11 may have them, i want to change for the look and feel of Stock android, and hopefully fluidness, as far as features are concerned, LG stock must have them all covered?
So you have reverted back to LG stock rom, lite version, then why not the official stock rom? HMM.

I mainly went with a lite stock rom for the debloat. I did run official stock and just disable things that I didn't want running but even after that there were a few things I couldn't disable plus I don't care for a lot of the LG apps. Malladus has a base that is debloated with most of the LG apps but also provides a LG App package that you can flash afterwards for those that want the LG Apps.. seemed like the best of both worlds. I will admit I did manually install a few of the left out LG apps like the Remote and Quick Memo.
OP this is solely on you, only you can figure out what will be your daily driver/ROM. With so many variables involved with Members, apps/usage so on....you have to just flash and test. Just because one has the same device does not mean you will have the same outcome or results.

I have owned more android phones than any non dev has a right to lol, and never before have I run stock this long
Thing is any other phone I have owned there has always been at least one rom that sticks out to me, but there just isn't with this phone. It's not that I do not think any are great, I just have not seen anything that jumps out to me.
So anyhow I was hoping maybe I might be able to get some people to share some of their favorite features, or things that are missing that do not work etc from roms currently available for hte Verizon LG G3.
Thanks in advance!

I know the feeling, to an extent. I'm still very much AOSP-inclined, but as far as "stock" roms go, you could definitely get a lot worse than LG's (cough, touchwiz, cough ). Anyway, At this point I've bounced back and forth between 4.4.4 roms and 5.0(.1) ones, as I can't find exactly what I want. On one hand, I like the bleeding edge of 5.0, but on the other, stability is real nice haha...which LG's stock offers, for the most part. I wish that there was just one "rock-solid" 4.4.4 rom out there, but every one I've tried has noticeable issues to some extent. They're often not severe, but they're enough to ideally want a little better. Back on my S3 I ran slimkat, and outside of battery life (which might have just been largely my old battery), it was easily my favorite and most stable daily driver. I'm currently running the latest build of the unofficial slimkat, but I think that the timing of when this device got unlocked, and all the hype about lollipop, etc. it seems like a rock-solid stable 4.4.4 may not exist for a while, if ever. Thing is, 4.4.4 to me really has a lot of benefits still over 5.0. It's not quite as speedy, but being able to run xposed, etc. are big plus'es imho. Just my 2c
I find myself in the same position. I really like xposed therefore I am rooted and running stock with xposed installed. Haven't tried any roms and will probably wait until there is a stable 5.0 rom.
I'm in the same boat, this is my first LG phone and I actually think the stock rom is pretty nice after I rooted, removed the bloat, and installed exposed, I usually run a rom for a few weeks until I get bored with it and look for something new, usually flash back and forth from aosp to stock, but I may keep it the way it is for a while, like the op said, I dont really see anything that jumps out to me and says "FLASH ME" either, I like lollipop but none of the roms had anything much to offer and I missed tweaking with exposed. the most important things to me are being able to root and tweak things and a rom that runs smooth and stable, stock has done this so far.
I finally got my Incredible 4G LTE to S_off. I flashed recovery to TWRP then tried to flash CM 11 Nightly for Fireball. The flash failed with the message "error updating updater binary in zip file". Fixes suggested included installing a dffferent recovery. I didn't want to do that so installed CM 10.2.1. That worked and it is running but the radio signal indicator was showing a low to no signal. I found this thread that indicates that is cosmetic and that the signal is as strong as before. I haven't noticed any issues with the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485091
has anyone seen this? Is it fixed in a later version of CM?
Have you tried any other ROMs besides CM?
Not yet. CM on this phone isn't yet 24 hrs old. I probably will live with it at least for the next few days since I am on call this weekend. The phone seems to work just fine otherwise.
Do you have any recommendations for a new ROM ? I am fairly new to Android, and very new to rooting in general. I see the team viper ROMs are discontinued. I also see this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933539
which is a mod of the stock ROM and of course I could in theory restore the stock ROM that I backed up.

While the ViperLTE ROM isn't supported anymore, it still works great. I have been using 2.2.0 (with the Infernal4.1 Kernel) as my daily driver for well over a year. The customizations over stock are great, and the Infernal Kernal adds Swipe2Wake. But, I like HTC Sense. CM is a better choice if you don't particularly care for Sense.
Unfortunately, this phone was the bastard, left-handed, red-headed step-child, thrice removed Verzion castoff that received very little support from Verizon and HTC. The launch was jacked-up, Verizon nixed the HTC Dev unlock for this phone, and root took a long while. As a result, there are not a lot of ROMs or support for it. I am very thankful to the small community that was able to achieve the unlock, s-off and the few ROMs, Kernels and recoveries that we do have.

Yeah, I am learning that as I go. However the phone was free, and I was in a slightly better spot than most cause if I bricked it I could always fall back to my iPhone if I had to. Besides, I learned a lot in the last 10 days. for now at least I will stick with CM and see what happens. It works here around my house, and I am not planning to far this weekend. Next week if I decide to I can try something else.

Good price I bought mine on day of release, and I am still quite happy with it. I have not seen anything out there yet that has a nice small form factor that would be worth changing to. Plus, I still have an unlimited data plan and I'm not inclined to give that up anytime soon. I would be more likely to pick up another "new" Dinc4 at this point if something were to happen to this one.
Well I have built PacRom and LiquidSmooth for this so feel free to give them a go. They both have working data so if you're looking for a stock Google then you should try it if you're S-OFF
Thanks for these 2 new options!!!!!!
Hola,
Need some testers... Lollipop lickers.
NOW TESTING:
GOLD ROM 1.0 a2: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952599995
Really a well put together ROM minimal theming adds gold text and shades of gold to different stock apps of the phone adds to the visual appeal I think. Its also very very fast. Scored higher in benchmarks than any other ROM I've made or ported. I believe this will be the final public 1st release for US var
Super6 v1 based on Albe95's S6 1.5: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952604733
Beautiful doesnt speak enough to the visual appeal of this ROM. Besides out performing Stock and nearly every other ROM for Lollipop (xcept GOLD) its all S6 ported apps except for a few Note4 apps I snuck in instead of buggier S6 ports. Only kept the flawless S6 ported apps which is everything but camera and I'll be swapping out the phone I believe in the actual public release. need some feedback on this 1 as I'm not completely sure all will have same results
I'll be uploading deodexed-debloated Stock ROMs later today. Along with 4 custom ROMs very soon. Test for these here before public releases are posted in Development section. Please give me feedback on any issues with the ROM and be sure and specify which your using! For now installation procedure is the same as my newest ROM: Echoe v49 found in Development section. ALL MY TESTS WILL USE SAFESTRAP OPTION OR TWRP FOR MDK USERS. NEVER FLASHFIRE UNTIL ITS KINKS THAT CAUSED ME TO KNOX 0X1 ARE WORKED OUT AND IT SUPPORTS AROMA OR SIMILAR INSTALLATION OPTIONS! THE WAY THIS I UPGRADE HAS 0 RISK FOR EVER BRICKING DEVICE OR BREAKING WARRANTY!
Coming soon...
Albe95's S6 Port for VZW!
Albe95's Lollipop 3.1 for VZW!
CarHD Lollipop Port VZW!
Stock Debloated-Deodexed-Rooted Lollipop with Install Options for VZW!
gogolie's gogoDeluxe Lollipop VZW!
GPE 5.0 Port VZW!
a few S5 to S4 Lollipop Ports awaiting permissions to use!
a brand new, sick and ridiculously overboard in terms of options, themes and mods available custom rom I'm calling LiCK for VZW!
A few never before seen US ports of Foreign ROMs!
I'll take suggestions when I'm done with above ROM's all of which have been built once but more time/testing/bug removal is needed before public release. Stay tuned to this thread for updates on these and more!
-thats all for now
gogolie
just in case
I better snag this too.......
Can't wait for the GPE 5.0 for VZW.
Let us know when FlashFire is safe to use and I'm up for testing at that point!
Add me to the list of folks anxious to see if you can get a GPE 5.0 for VZW working, especially if it's something that can work with our SafeStrap-limited phones.
Sure, add me to the list of beta testers!

Although I really hope you can get this working. I really doubt it... a bench of us have tried, and other than getting a bootanimation to come up, we haven't gotten very far... the issue lies in the fact that Samsung changed the way that the ART runtime works with the Samsung Kernel, and therefore, the Samsung kernel is looking to deal with the Samsung ART runtime, and the AOSP ART just loops at some random error. If we try to switch out the AOSP ART with Samsung, the ROM fails to even boot to bootanimations.

well thats no fun np I hadn't a chance to try the build yet but I literally was about too just running thru my threads answering user questions now... maybe theres hope in @hsbadr Multisystem as a work around or was that as a possible option explored already? I guess they may have to settle for a Hybrid if thats the case. But I still have confidence no one even thought GPE was a possibility on i545 till i brought out those 4.2.2 ROMs and proved it was indeed possible with SS. Then over course of last summer when I found all the International GPE ROM's that would boot and were converted into what we have for options now on 4.4.2 -4.4.4 til now we've either found work arounds for issues or fixes. I was literally about to release a fully working gpe 4.4.2 rom with mtp, wifi and a killer aroma installer with a sh*T load of options before lollipop came out of nowhere... I'm doubting the your negative attitude np ;P looks like @Joe-Tech was able to get a 5.0 GPE ROM to Boot. From looks of it based off Echoe GPE. I'm willing to put down $50 says we have at least a semi functioning GPE ROM by end of the month. what are u gunna call kitpop when 5.0 rolls around? I'm thinking the name no longer fits bro lol better start brainstorming that 1 bud heres Joe's 5.01 test zip he had gotten it to boot and as far as the setup screen before being plagued with FCs and restarts. Did ya'll check that out yet and see why hes able to get a lot further than a bootanimation? I know I've been gone for a while but literally nothing has changed til a week ago. I just wish a breakthru on the bootloader would happen already.... sick of crossing my fingers and hoping would hiring a qualcomm dev to do some internal research help maybe petitioning them with all the bounty money would be easier than cracking it via an undiscovered exploit. christ i just realized im way too baked wrote a minibook response and can barely hold my eyes open. hell at this point im just happy we finally got lolli. Well, Joe said it boots... but not one can get it to. He released that Zip, and multiple ATT testers confirmed that they couldn't get it to boot either, following his exact instructions. It is based off Echoe though, haha.
As for you 4.4.2 KK GPE ROM, you got MTP working? Mind sharing how you did so? I got UMS working as an MTP alternative on the ATT variant, but UMS doesn't work for the VZW model, as the VZW CD Installer takes over in the place of UMS.
Haha, I thought about the new ROM name actually. I'm thinking of calling it NextS4 or something similar. That's granted we can figure this all out BTW, it you want it, we did figure out WiFi AP, and packaged it into a nice WiFi AP app for the GPE SS ROM's, you can just yank it out of KitPop if you want to use it. It just requires Secure Settings (the app), XPosed, and Root.
So many options!!!
Unfortunately it didn't fully flash since It had an error during installation after install the apps. Right now, I couldn't get my phone booted and having issues flashing via Odin. So I'll have to try this again once I reflash the partitions on my phone again and reroot and all.
Will try to update once I've gotten everything done.

hopefully uploading in a few hours. only setback on her was the phone/contacts rebuilding the APK kept causing weird FCs for Phone. Really annoying actually. If I pop another Phone into the Stock Phones place it works like a charm. Havent had a chance to see whats really the issue with that specific apk because I've been so overwhelmed with all these options and having to catch up to the rest of the scene thats been on and used to lollipop. i will say ive had better benchmarks than ever before with the few ROM's I just uploaded. The 1 will be instant favorite around here. just hoping everyone gives Gold a shot too cause its my fav so far...
but heres a few for you guys to test... let me know if you get same result with Albe95 S6 port with the phone which is that it works but its weird from time to time wont let you hang up or use dialpad incall. I'm working a new version of this ROM before public releasing but its a really really cool ROM Albe's out done hiimself. Personally looks better than S6 Stock to me (not a fan of the ugly VZW Swamp Green on stock dialer)
I'd wipe System and Data when installing these ROM's... but feel free to try dirty not sure what the results will be. Remember 1st boot of Lollipop ROM's takes a good 15mins sometimes just to load the System!

Really a well put together ROM minimal theming adds gold text and shades of gold to different stock apps of the phone adds to the visual appeal I think. Its also very very fast. Scored higher in benchmarks than any other ROM I've made or ported.
Super6 based on Albe95's S6 1.01: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952599999
Tried the GOLD version a couple of times.
The first was obviously a bad download.
After another download, the second resulted in a bootloop.
I'm on MDK with TWRP 2.8.4.0. Do I need to upgrade TWRP or something else I need to do? I've been able to boot other AOSP/GPE/CM Lollipop ROMs but may be missing something.
neither rom works
I downloaded gold and super6 a few times
each time did an advanced wipe and then tried each rom ... neither has an aroma installer?
both rebooted to stock recovery screen
so i am now flashing another gogolie rom to play with
any ideas what i missed if anything?

Just to follow up. I have been successful at flashing the stock Lollipop from muniz_ri so my problems appear specific to the GOLD ROM (haven't tried the other yet).
getting ASOP to work is gonna require a pretty substantial rewrite of the ROM source
the issue goes much deeper then samsung fiddling with ART
most likely gonna need to wait for samesung to release vzw LP source and then see what exactly they changed
not impossible but I highly doubt by the end of the month

Thanks for the update. Wish Samsung would have just left Lollipop alone -_- especially when cm 12.1 runs so well on my ageing Toro GNexus.
