Random Shutoffs and a Single click of the Power button shuts off - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a galaxy s3 running Cyanogenmod 12.1 rooted and recently its just been randomly shutting off. It works fine for a bit then just shuts off out of nowhere. Also, whenever I only click the power button it shows the power off, reset, etc. popup then just shuts off before I can even cancel it. This does it sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. After it shuts off and I try to boot it, it goes to the boot screen and just shuts off again. It takes a bunch of tries just to get it up and running again, only to randomly shut off again. I actually only rooted it recently and soon after these problems started showing up, so it may be a software issue.

Have you replaced your battery with a non-original one? I had the same problem with one from Anker. After using again my older original samsung battery the problem has gone.
but maybe your power button could be broken.
you could also try if the problem appears on stock ROM flashed by odin

Ah I have not replaced the battery. I have heard that a common issue was a broken power button so I'll go check that out. This has happened right after I rooted the phone so I'll try to see it if is a software issue first

Boot Loop

I was running a 4.2.2 ROM...well, I was switching between two of them.
My phone started doing some massive reboots today, so I decided to reflash.
Now, if my phone is NOT plugged to charge, it boot loops. Gets up to the boot animation, then starts all over again.
If I plug the USB cable in and boot the phone, it boots all the way and the phone is fine.
HOWEVER, as soon as I unplug the cable, phone reboots again. Battery charge is full.
Running TWRP 2.4.4.0, and was flipping between JamieD's 4.2.2 and ManelScout's Vanilla, along with Ace's latest kernal and the UCMB4 modem.
Trying to determine if this might be a hardware problem. The OS is showing as battery full charge, but recovery shows battery % @ like 2%.
sounds like you may have a stuck power button

I read that in someone else's post. Physically, it seem like the power button is fine.
How do I "unstuck" the power button in this case?
I've already ODIN'd to stock GB, and downloading the ICS update. Pains me to be unrooted and on a stock ROM.
I need my phone operational ASAP, so I am struggling right now to get this thing functioning normally?
Do I need to take it apart? Is the power button "stuck" in the sense of software? Or literally physically?
BTW, the power button is responsive in terms of turning the unit on/off. Does that still mean it is stuck?
And what about the fact that the unit will boot up fully with the power plugged in, but boot loop if on battery only?
Try another battery. Yours may be going bad.

[Help] Power button issue

I tried to turn the screen off, but it keeps turning back on. I've had this issue for a while and looked it up. Most people said it was a hardware issue, but the thing is...now it will not turn off the screen at all. I know the power button works because I can long press it to get the power menu as well as hold to restart, but not turn off the screen. Also, I can activate the "lock" feature in TWRP as well with the power button. I had this issue on an older rom, so I wiped EVERYTHING and installed revolt, yet I still had this issue and as I was typing this, I got the new issue of it never turning off. I don't know what's causing it. Any ideas? It's been happening for a few days now.
Attempt 2: Now I have the stupid turning off issue. Now, every time I press the power button the opposite happens. It turns on for a second and then turns back off. I'm thinking that this is a hardware issue. Anyone else disagree?
Attempt 3: Back to same issue, turns off and turns right back on in like 2 seconds. Going to call Samsung and see what this is about.
[EDIT]: I should mention, I have the same vibrate issue described in this thread. I'm suspecting a stuck power button. Great. Time to talk AT&T into giving me an early upgrade.
A stuck power button won't allow your phone to boot up completely. So you're probably ok there if you can boot up and type in an app.
You do have an issue though. Something got borked up somewhere. I would try going back to stock completely.
Backup important files, wipe EVERYthing on the phone at least twice. Then using Samsung kies on a PC do an emergency firmware update. Once your update completes perform another factory reset and see how she's working. If you still have a problem then contact Samsung. If no problem, enjoy your phone!
Eh, I tried the wiping everything (internal, not the sd card), but I guess I shall try moving it to stock as well. Do you suggest keeping TWRP or should I install stock kernel, recovery, and do a firmware update? I might also dump my phone in rice to see if maybe some water got in there (doubt it though). Also, I might be screwed if it's otherwise. Been over a year since I bought the note.
Also, are you sure it's not stuck (partially or sometimes maybe)? My phone is constantly rebooting on and off for no reason and sometimes this happens, other times the power button is okay. But when it does reboot, it vibrates a lot. Sometimes it'll just keep vibrating and never reboot like it's turning off and on constantly and I have to press and hold the power button a few times before it starts booting again.
EDIT: I also realize it could be a combination of issues and one of these issues might be a battery one. I do have another battery and I can feel a noticeable bulge so I'll go home, change the roms, battery, and do a firmware update and see how it goes.
Would just like to add that flashing an official firmware through kies did not fix my problem. Furthermore, now I'm getting the invalid sim problem and it keeps asking me to restart. I had this problem before and just recently (a week ago) got a new sim and now it's back. Maybe it's an hardware issue?

[Q] Bootlooping. Opinions on issue?

Last night my phone started bootlooping very frequently. I was running the CM10 built with Samsung source that was posted in this section for a while with absolutely no problems, when suddenly the phone shut off and started doing short, quick vibrations repeatedly. Like the vibration that the phone makes when it first turns on and shows the Samsung logo. I pulled the battery but it continued once I put the battery back in. Eventually I got it to boot but soon after it booted it started again. I am now running Blackjelly v1, and though less frequent, the problem still persists...does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Mine did the same thing... It was crazy...Nothing I did fixed it... Flashed away at any 4.2.2 Rom and It was consistent bootloop... Decided to take phone apart and clean power button (read somewhere power button gets stuck) Same issue bootloop... I odined back to stock...bam it worked...now the capacitive buttons don't work... So after booting stock I flashed TWRP recovery and attempted to flash 4.2.2 rom to no prevail, I am only capable of flashing BlackJelly v1 any other rom sends me into (App is upgrading screen after boot after apps say Starting Apps bootloop) nonstop bootloop...
I honestly wonder if my phone is the only phone that will not accecpt 4.2.2 roms...

It's now bootlooping like crazy. It'll turn on for like 5 minutes and then go right back to bootlooping. My USB port is kinda screwy so it's hard to odin anything. I'm at a loss for what to do.

I had boot looping problems several times now. For me, it's always been sticky power button. One time, I forgot it had that problem at work and looped for 30 minutes. I just take out the battery for about an hour, then get the power button unstuck. My button gets stuck at the bottom of the button, so I can normally mess with the top part to fix it.
So the issue has escalated even further now. It is a sticky power button, i believe, but now when the phone tries to turn on it shows both samsung logos and then shuts right back off and refuses to turn on again unless i do a battery pull...I'm not even sure if it's turning off, actually. It turns on immediately after inserting a battery into the device. But right now I have a fancy brick.
Definitly a power button issue

My phone started doing a crazy bootloop just out of the blue last night. I have never had a problem. I took the battery out to put my memory card back in. I'd been using it for my digital camera. This is not out of the ordinary. I do it all the time. But after I replaced the card, battery and cover it started this continuous boot loop. Sometimes it will go to the main screen and allow me to perform some functions, but then it goes right back to the bootloop. I am running the Padawan JB rom. I did the complete wipe, factory reset and re-flash. But it still did the bootloop. The only time it does NOT exhibit this issue is when the phone is on the charger. Then and only then it works perfectly. Is it the battery? Why will it bootloop without the charger and work fine when on the charger?
It is probably your battery

The Note won't run without a proper battery installed. I had the problem where I swapped out my dead battery for a fully charged one (I do this everyday) and all of a sudden it kept bootlooping.I spent a few hours, when I got home, flashing it back to stock etc to no avail. I could get into download mode, and download to my hearts content but when I tried to boot the phone, it looped. Samsung, samsung, samsung....
I swapped back my, now charged, spare and BAM it booted into stock android no problem. I think my first (stock samsung battery actually) is finished. Or at least has some serious issues, and the phone refuses to boot with it in but my spare (Anker battery) works fine.
I hope this works for you's, it did for me

Also, if I had just charged my phone using my working battery, I would have saved myself some serious grief, and hours wasted. Here's to hoping you don't too!

That's odd... Why did this start happening?

I have the Verizon model. Yesterday, I rooted the phone, and flashed the last AOKP milestone build, then turned my phone off for the night, and plugged it in to charge. It charged just fine. This morning, I played around with the phone more, got everything set up how I wanted it, and let it have its first day use.
I'm getting ready to turn in for the night, and just now, I turned off my phone and plugged it in, but I noticed the screen stuck on the big battery image. I waited a while, assuming it would just fade off and then charge normally, but it just stayed stuck. I tried to power the phone on while it was "frozen" on this screen, but it was unresponsive. I pulled the battery, put it back in and connected the charger, and the same thing happened. I pulled the battery again, this time turned the phone on, plugged it in while it was still on, then shut the phone down, and after it powered down, it immediately locks up on the battery image.
It definitely wasn't doing this yesterday when I turned in for the night... Why is it doing this all of a sudden? Is this a known issue? Is there a way to solve this?
Hmmm that is weird. I don't think it has anything to do with the ROM you flashed (someone correct me if I'm wrong here...) because that phone off battery charging animation happens regardless of the ROM. Are you saying the phone won't turn on at all while it is plugged in now? It turns on when unplugged right?
Yeah, it seems like if I plug it in while the phone is off (or if I plug it in while it's still on and then turn it off without unplugging it), it gets stuck on that battery image and becomes completely unresponsive and I have to pull the battery.
Are you holding the power button for around 4 seconds when trying to turn in back on?

Yep. Held it for about that long, nothing happened. Waited a second, then presses and held it down for even longer, still no response.
It's strange to me that this didn't happen at all yesterday, and today, this happens. Him.
The last poster on the Unofficial AKOP + IR builds thread has the same issue. Might be a new AKOP issue then. I'd watch that forum for a while and submit a bug report to AKOP if the problem persists. Also try Odin-ing back to stock and re-loading everything and see if that fixes the issue (if you have the time of course).

I flashed a different kernel. Now when plugged in from power off the big battery image still freezes, but press power and screen will turn off. Hit it again and the small black and white battery charging animation comes up. Hold power and phone turns on.
Problem solved. It's the CM kernel. Now using ktoonsez kernel.

Hm. I'll have to look for that kernel.
By the way, does franco kernel not work with the S4? I downloaded the franco updater app I always used on my Galaxy Nexus, but when I go the screen for downloading the latest kernel like I've always done, I just get a blank screen on the S4.
I don't think he's made a kernel for us? Check original development subforum

Galaxy S4 Verizon i545 Reboots Randomly when not on charging

Hi,
I have a galaxy s4 SCH-i545 . The phone reboots randomly (sometimes immediately after boot, sometimes after 5 minutes of usage sometime even more )when I use it if it is NOT on charging. However while on charging the phone does not reboot. My friend also has a s4, I used his battery just to see if it is a battery issue but it reboots even with his battery. I had kitkat and I upgraded to lollipop but issue stays the same. I have no issue with power button as suggested in many threads here.
What could be the issue? What can be done?

My first thought was the battery (until you mentioned you tried another), I had a bad one that caused the same issue.
First try:
Hard reset, hold power button down until it shuts off. Turn it back on and see if it still restarts.
Next try going into stock recovery and clearing cache, see if it helps.
Last try a master reset, if it's software based this would correct it.
If nothing above works it might be a hardware issue, if you have Verizon and are paying for insurance they will replace it for free. I just got a new S4 form VZW for free and I didn't even buy my first S4 from Verizon.
