Gamepad Module? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

So whats the deal with Modules. Are they going to be LG created only or can other companies license and build mods?
I would love to see a gamepad attachment for mobile gaming! Is this even something thats possible?

How are they gonna make a gamepad module? With controls only in one side of the screen? You need controls in both sides, but the slot is only in one.
Forget about it.

You have poor imagination xD Just make a dualshock type controller with an LG G5 sized space in the middle and a rotating connector. Slide the phone into the connector and just rotate until it's properly fixed in the space

Modifying the Athena to a real portable console

Hello,
I don't know if the subject was already discussed, but I never saw anything about that.
So, as we are a lucky to own a device with a removing keyboard, I thought we could plug something else like a real pad and some buttons to make our device looks and feels like a real portable console. Take a look at the pic, though it is just a draft.
I think we could get the pad and the buttons from a real little joystick (there's plenty of them for diferent consoles), mount them on the Athena and join them with micro wires to the 8 pins used to connect the keyboard.
We would need informations about how the keyboard work with the main unit.
This is just an idea but I think it could be a really good one. I'm not a good homemade genius nor an amator, though, if you are interested, we could maybe work together on this project.
The cursor pad does exactly what the Athens' own joystick does. You can skip that.

Hello,
I noticed that the stick on the Athena's can't do up-right,up-left,down-right nor down-left. At first look and first use I thought the stick was well designed, but finaly this issue prevents playing most games. If people here can use the stick to do diagonal axis, please let me know.
Aynway, the main idea was to make the Athena looks and feels like a real portable console. Game buttons really lake for this purpose and the ones available just suck. The feel is not good and they are not well set.
Also I'm not talking about piercing holes in the athena but finding a way to fix a pad+buttons set on the surface of the machine.

When u say fix a pad+buttons set on the surface do you sorta like using a silicon skin over the device with the buttons built in on it and using either fiber optic wires or some kind of thin ribbon cable going back to the keyboard pads and all the necessary cutouts already in place on the skin so you can still access all the stuff (ie. reset, battery area, external gps conectors etc. etc...) Or was I way over my head on this one?

Well, there are many ways to bind a system like that on the device without damaging it and by keeping access to the functions you mentioned. I haven't thought about that yet because I think the 1st thing to figure out is how the Athena deals with the keyboard using the pins. Has anyone ever seen informations about that ?
A very good & interesting idea , in my opinion add more buttons is always better as u have more choices to activate these buttons if otherways failed to do so , and i don't think it will take up space in the ram / rom , anyway Htc should look into this page , always more buttons , more better i say

Fling joystick - hands on review

Just got my two fling joysticks in today:
Games played:
Gorilla Bob
Death worm
Pew Pew 2
Samurai II
The good:
I think the fling joysticks idea would make for excellent buttons. When placed over onscreen buttons, they work really well. Just tap them like you would any gamepad button.
The bad:
The problem is the joystick radius is too small. In Pew Pew 2, Deathworm, and Samurai II the joystick does not extend to edge of the onscreen joystick, so you move really really slow. Gorilla Bob was a perfect fit to the onscreen keyboard. But the fling joystick just isn't that accurate. I found myself dying a lot more than usual.
The Ugly:
It's dirt cheap plastic. I feel like I'm going to break them every time I use them. I have a feeling they won't last a week in my tablet case. The first time I set down my backpack wrong, they will be broken. Secondly, they don't slide too well. If they don't make flat contact with the tablet, they may not register.
Putting them on the screen requires pressure (Not light pressure either)!!!!
Which means you can potentially damage your screen is you put them on incorrectly. Best to put the suction cups over the border.
The base of the joystick is a painted magnet (might be plastic instead of paint, not sure). While it might not damage your screen, I'm not willing to take that chance. I wouldn't use them on a screen without a screen protector. However, gluing a piece of felt or fabric to the bottom might make a huge improvement in the way the joysticks handle, and protect your screen.
The potential silver lining:
I think the fling joystick may work very well over a onscreen dpad, i.e. emulator. The do not work well on onscreen analog sticks. I will try some emulators later.
Comparison to other joysticks with my score:
360 Controller: 10
PS3 Controller: 9
Onscreen Android joystick: 6-8
Fling Joystick: 1-4 (may change after testing with emulator)
Advertised price: $20 (USD)
My Cost: $9
What I feel they are worth: $2 (may change after testing with emulator)
Might be better over onscreen dpad. Will test that later.
If I get bored, I may try out Thumbies by Psyclone. Since the fling joystick would make an excellent button, the thumbies might be pretty good, if they line up correctly onscreen. I found I can get the entire set for $9 on taobao(3 d-pads, 1 4-button, 1 3-button, 1 2-button, and 3 single buttons).

Is it possible to use a wii controller with these games? or will that only work for emulators?
If the games will allow you to use a keyboard or joystick, there are ways to make the wii controller work.

I love mine. They only work well with on-screen analog sticks like in Nova 2 and Galaxy on Fire.
I bought 2 but quickly found you only really need 1 because the right hand is all over the place.
They do feel SUPER cheap and fragile but they work very well. They literally should only cost $1 or $2. But they give a nice resistance to moving around. Anything with an analog interface will work great. It probably won't work so well with controls that use separate buttons for Up/Down/Left/Right though, although most games come with several options for control schemes. For sizes, some games allow you to adjust the size of the onscreen joystick so you aren't "walking slow".
It really depends on the game I guess. Some games work well with it and others don't. Buttons would be a nice idea but again, all games place buttons in different positions.
If they standardized the size of the virtual joysticks so you can reach the outer limits then this joystick would be perfect all around. The button idea (I thought the same) is also give and take on the game.
Unless someone made a "virtual controller overlay" where it is the same overlay and you just map buttons to the games. Then you are getting into technical aspects.
The price is pretty steep for the plastic, but the idea is awesome. The joysticks, in my experience, REALLY help in enjoying the game. If you can pick one up for a few bucks I would. I keep mine in its nice little pouch and use it when needed.

[REVIEW] GameKlip - Phone Mount for PS3 Dualshock Controller

GameKlip Review:
I've been using the GameKlip for a few days now and here are my thoughts on it.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with GameKlip in any way other than as a satisfied customer.
First some background:
The GameKlip was created by a gentleman named Ryan French, a student at the University of Washington. He makes GameKlips for many android phones including all Galaxy S3 variants, the Galaxy Nexus, the HTC Evo 4G and One X, a bunch of Galaxy S2 variants, and the Galaxy Note. He is also developing a tablet version of the GameKlip. The GameKlip comes in both a wireless and wired version. This review is of the wireless version. The wired version is identical except it includes a mini usb to micro usb cable to connect the phone to the PS3 controller.
I love to play games on my G Note but I hate on screen controls, so I've been using the SixAxis controller app (Play Store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...5ncGl4ZWxzdHVkaW9zLnNpeGF4aXNjb250cm9sbGVyIl0.) and a PS3 dual shock controller for a while. The only drawback is I had to prop the Note up somehow, either leaning it against something or using a case with a kickstand. So when I came across the GameKlip, I ordered one right away. Here are my thoughts on the GameKlip for the Galaxy Note I717.
The Good:
The GameKlip is well made and fits both the PS3 controller and the Note well. The GameKlip is constructed of black plastic. It takes a bit of wrestling to get it onto the PS3 controller, but once on the controller, it fits perfectly and securely. The GameKlip doesn't interfere with any of the buttons or bumpers and it holds the Note at a comfortable viewing angle. There are pieces of felt attached to the end tabs to prevent scratching on the edges of the Note and keeps it snug in the GameKlip.
The Bad:
The size of the GameKlip seems a bit narrow based on how wide the Note is. What I mean by that, is not much of the Note actually fits into the GameKlip. The GameKlip could have been another quarter inch or so taller t allow more of the device to fit into the GameKlip. The Note fits securly into the bracket, but I would feel better if more of the Note was held in the GameKlip.
The location of the bottom tabs on the GameKlip interfere with the hardware buttons on the Note. For example, if the Note is inserted with the micro usb connector to the left, the bottom right tab hits the power button. Alternately, if the Note is installed with the micro usb connector to the right, the bottom left tab hits the volume rocker. It prevents the Note from being fully inserted into the GameKlip bracket, which would not be a big deal except for the depth of the bracket is pretty shallow, as I noted previously.
Overall
Despite the couple design issues that I noted above, I am very satisfied with the GameKlip. It completely solves an issue that I had with mobile gaming and I give a lot of credit to the creator for identifying a smartphone accessory need that wasn't being addressed, or at least not being addressed properly, and creating a product that meets that need.
I have been using the GameKlip every day for my mobile gaming since I received it, and I definitely recommend this product to other smartphone owners who enjoy mobile gaming but hate on screen controls. I especially recommend this product to fellow Note owners because the size of the screen on our Note lends itself so well to gaming.

I'd definitely be in for one if he could make one that can accommodate the Mugen extended battery cover.

Yep, confirmed that the original PS3 Sixaxis as well as the DualShock work very well using the Sixaxis Controller app. Well worth the $2. I'm ten times better at "Dead Trigger" now than I was before. :laugh:
GameKlip mod
I just emailed GameKlip and requested a GNote Klip w/o the side holders (leaving the bottom ones intact). IMO this would be the first step to a universal solution since you could (in theory) glue/velcro a phone case to the back... I'd pay for this. If GK won't do this I might buy it as is anyway and file the side holders down... Anyone see any pitfalls to this solution?
I'm in for one with the cable. I will let you guys know if the cable actually works or not, but I figured I could save some battery by keeping bluetooth off. That is if it works.

You need root for wireless.
The wired option is an OTG cable, and a USB -> Mini USB cable which is pre-zipped tied for neatness.
Even tho' I am rooted, for me, the wired version is worth the extra $8.
I thought I came up with an awesome invention when I thought of this last week. Somebody beat me to it. lol

I almost put that in the bullet points of my post above, but then I wondered if the controller will try to charge itself off of the Note's battery, so left it out.

To my knowledge the only way to charge a PS3 controller is either directly connected to a PS3, a PS3 controller dock, or laptop USB. Hadn't thought about it until now (I assumed it wasn't possible) but wired play would be good for me whenever I want to use my Bluetooth headphones while playing.
Has anyone received it yet?!?

I got mine of Thursday, does exactly what it says on the tin. You cannot push the Note fully home as the lips that stop the phone from sliding through the bracket will end up pressing the volume up button in Landscape or the power button in reverse landscape. But it does hold the phone very securely.
By the looks of the PS3's LEDs (All four flash when charging), and by how fast my battery depleted, the USB OTG does charge the controller, so make sure that the controller is fully charged before you hook it up to the Note.
One complaint about some game developers...
If the game is played in Landscape. SUPPORT BOTH LANDSCAPE ORIENTATIONS!
I have the Samsung flip cover installed, so I have to place the phone in the GameKlip in reverse landscape, which some games, such as the Sonic games, do not support.
Can we get some profiles uploaded, I cant get mine to work. I could use a Deadtrigger ,GTA3 and Ashphalt 6 Profiles

I don't know about Deadtrigger (looking for that one myself), and Asphalt, but GTA3 works just like the PSone via SixAxis Controller for me.

Dead Trigger has gamepad support already, so there is no need to create a touch profile with the Sixaxis app. Make sure your controller is connected, then start the game. You should see a new gamepad option in the menus somewhere, and that will let you customize the controls.

My PERSONAL review of the iPega 9023 controller.

Hey guys, so, I know there's a lot of you out there who are thinking of getting a controller for your shield tablet, thinking you should get a console controller w/ bluetooth or something of that nature, but I honestly think this is the best controller out there, despite some of its flaws. This isn't really a professional review, just some pictures and captions xP But I think it'll give people an idea of what to expect. The pictures were relatively big, 4000x3000, so I had to resize them all to 1024x768 on postimg. You can click the thumbnails to get a better view.
So as far as the box goes, there's nothing really much to say, it's mostly in chinese.
There's not much inside the box. Just the controller, a charge cable that's about 3 meters long, and an instruction manual.
The sheer size of this thing after first holding it literally had me laughing for about 10 minutes, just actually taking in that I'm holding this gaming device that is now about 13.5" long was just funny xD
After playing with this thing for an hour or two, going back to the Vita, the Vita felt extremely tiny in comparison.
This thing has three modes to pair, each is selected by turning the controller on while holding either X, Y, or A and pressing the home button at the same time. There is Keyboard, Gamepad(What you'd use), and mouse mode. Gamepad is X+Home.

The controller works very well with gamestream, practically no input lag AT ALL, but there is some video lag though that's NVIDIA's fault and will hopefully be lowered in the later months/years.

The build quality for this controller is absolutely FANTASTIC for $30, It feels much better than my Moga Pro in every aspect except portability, but for a tablet I'm sure you aren't expecting that anyway. The sticks feel amazing to the touch and have just the right amount of resistance, both the face buttons and the top buttons feel nice, just everything feels great and it's hard to believe this thing only costs $30, but there are some cons.
Not exactly a con: Ports
The ports are hidden as you have the controller fit as snug as possible, but it is completely possible to raise the tablet up higher while it's in the controller and have every port shown while still having a tight fit. It'll look something along the lines of this.
I kid you not I was flinging this controller up and down and left and right and even with the tablet in that high, it didn't budge at all, this controller holds your device in very well.
Pro: Works with Gamemapper
For some reason it's 2015 and we still have FPS games that don't have native gamepad support(NOVA 3). Luckily, just hold the start button and you can bring up NVIDIA's gamemapper.
(60/40) Con: D-PAD
Don't get me wrong, this is a really great D-PAD...For everything other than fighters. It feels nice, it works almost perfectly, the problem is, diagonal inputs don't read as naturally as they should. You have to kind of put more effort into getting the D-PAD in the diagonal portion of the gate to correctly get a hadouken or whatever you want out. It's kind of frustrating. A side note, for some reason, the Home button doesn't work at all. Not sure if I have a broken controller or if it just doesn't work correctly with Lollipop.
Con: L2/R2 (LT/RT for you X360 users)
Even though they feel nice to press, I can't get over the fact that these are just buttons, and not actual triggers. I don't even want to try a racing game with Gamestream because of how much it'd fail. They work fine with everything else though.
All in all, this is a very nice controller, and even with those cons, I'd recommend it to ANYONE looking for a controller for ANY tablet. Definitely the best bang for your buck.

Solid review. I had the same controller a while back for my Nexus 7 and it worked well . I sent it back along with my refurbed 7 to Amazon a few week's back while deciding on which tablet to purchase next. After picking up the Shield Tablet the other day, I decided re-purchase this one instead of going with the Shield controller. The iPega's ability to hold the tablet right where your hands should be helps deliver a more immersive experience which can't be said for just about anything else out there.

Yeah, definitely. I used to use a PS3 Controller for the Shield Tablet and was considering buying this prototype looking thing, http://www.shapeways.com/product/BJXE3ZRK3/ps3-controller-nvidia-shield-tablet
Then I considered just how top heavy that would be and decided to look elsewhere. This is definitely the best tablet controller hands down.
I agree this is a very good product for the price and handles very well when gaming. Though be weary, if you choose to have your Nvidia Shield in a full body case which increases the thickness of the tablet, then its not going to fit securely. I got the iPega 9023 first, then got the the Poetic Revolution case. And the frustrating thing is, I want both, but currently the tablet when in the case doesn't sit securely in the controller, the controller loses its grip, and springs back into its default size, pushing out the tablet.

The iPega 9023 is known to use ****ty joysticks with incredibly bad deadzones. Firmware compensation for those deadzones prevent simple replacement of the sticks with better equipment. Im surprised you rated it so high. Even given the extremely low asking price, 25$ is better spent elsewhere. For those considering this piece of junk, its hard to see in a video, but you should at least do some homework before blowing your money on this thing. There have only been 2 known revisions, the 2nd edition being nothing but a palette swap. I had high hopes for a gamepad tablet holder. Even after doing the research i purchased with the intention of just replacing the sticks. Having done that, its very clear the problem is both firmware and hardware, and there's no easy fix.

If you root your tablet, you can set custom deadzones for any gamepad in the android system. You just need to edit the appropriate .kl file, I've done it many times for Xbox 360 controllers and the Moga Pro gamepad.

I own 10.6'' "cube i7 stylus" tablet, with length of 273.77mm (10.77'') and I am not sure if it is going to fit.
It is advertised as 10'' maximum but maybe it can be stretched more?

You can get an Over the top version that has a nice weight distro

This thing has three modes to pair, each is selected by turning the controller on while holding either X, Y, or A and pressing the home button at the same time. There is Keyboard, Gamepad(What you'd use), and mouse mode. Gamepad is X+Home.

The controller works very well with gamestream, practically no input lag AT ALL, but there is some video lag though that's NVIDIA's fault and will hopefully be lowered in the later months/years.

Now, onto some actual reviewy type stuff, the pros and cons. The build quality for this controller is absolutely FANTASTIC for $30, It feels much better than my Moga Pro in every aspect except portability, but for a tablet I'm sure you aren't expecting that anyway. The sticks feel amazing to the touch and have just the right amount of resistance, both the face buttons and the top buttons feel nice, just everything feels great and it's hard to believe this thing only costs $30, but there are some cons.
Not exactly a con: Ports
The ports are hidden as you have the controller fit as snug as possible, but it is completely possible to raise the tablet up higher while it's in the controller and have every port shown while still having a tight fit. It'll look something along the lines of this.
I kid you not I was flinging this controller up and down and left and right and even with the tablet in that high, it didn't budge at all, this controller holds your device in very well.
Pro: Works with Gamemapper
For some reason it's 2015 and we still have FPS games that don't have native gamepad support(NOVA 3). Luckily, just hold the start button and you can bring up NVIDIA's gamemapper.
(60/40) Con: D-PAD
Don't get me wrong, this is a really great D-PAD...For everything other than fighters. It feels nice, it works almost perfectly, the problem is, diagonal inputs don't read as naturally as they should. You have to kind of put more effort into getting the D-PAD in the diagonal portion of the gate to correctly get a hadouken or whatever you want out. It's kind of frustrating. A side note, for some reason, the Home button doesn't work at all. Not sure if I have a broken controller or if it just doesn't work correctly with Lollipop.
Con: L2/R2 (LT/RT for you X360 users)
Even though they feel nice to press, I can't get over the fact that these are just buttons, and not actual triggers. I don't even want to try a racing game with Gamestream because of how much it'd fail. They work fine with everything else though.
All in all, this is a very nice controller, and even with those cons, I'd recommend it to ANYONE looking for a controller for ANY tablet. Definitely the best bang for your buck.

Gamemapper does work with most controllers I believe. I believe you have to hold start to get it to come up. I don't use stock anymore, and use Tincore all the way, so its been a while since I ever looked at it with curiosity.

It autodetects the iPega. There is nothing special about using it with Tincore and to tell you how to use it would be just posting what already exists in the Tincore guides. My advice is, Tincore does ALOT which you probably won't need. Focus on just the aspects you need and ignore the rest.

I've been looking at the Rog Phone 2 as a potential upgrade for awhile now, and am considering buying it on Giztop rather than waiting for a US release. I would like to get it with the Kunai Gamepad 2 (seems like a perfect gamepad for emulators and I really like joy-con style controllers) but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can find the controller or if it's even been released yet? For those who may already have the Kunai Gamepad 2, how good is it compared to other attachable android controllers?

Kunai gamempad, already available in China
Kunai gamepad it's already here. I've got only the version to attach it to the phone, since i don't need the adapter to use it as an independent Bluetooth controller.
It comes with the central bumper, the 2 joycons and 1 adapter from usbC to jack, in case you don't wanna use the fan but still wanna use the headset, since the default jack will be covered by the bumper.
It has some presets already for few games, and the rest are completely customizable. I'm still configuring it so I can't give an opinion yet. I can only post 1 picture from the phone.

Yes, besides the L1, L2, R1 and R2, there is also an M1 on the right hand, and M2 on the left hand, both on the rear side.

Very nice! Does it feel comfortable to hold in hand? And how is the deadzone recognizing on the right analog stick? Usually with these gamepads the right analog stick sucks for things such as aiming and whatnot. I liked how the black shark 2 had a touch pad but it was u comfortable to hold after awhile.
Giztop, Asus Singapore, and B&H here in the United States have been taking orders for a week. You can get it by the end of October or so. I do look forward to finally having it

Yeah, the right analog stick is not really useful... On shooter games, it still better to aim using the touchscreen. You can adjust the sensitivity on each game though. Left stick works great

you dont need to use both. it come with a side protection for the bumpers in case you only want to use one side of the controller. The fact is that when the controller is pluffed, the touchscreen stills working, so it doesnt matter if you plug or not the right side of the controller, in shooter games you can still aim with the right joystick or with the touchscreen on the same time. if you remove that part, then only the touchscreen will work. Even air triggers still working on the same time if you want

havent had that one hour gaming session yet! haha.
according to my short experience:
Call of duty mobile and PUBG: right analog stick is way more slow and imprecise than using the touchscreen, rest of the buttons are great
Dolphin emulator Game Cube / wii: I manily lost all my time tryint to set up this. Problem is, you can set up only 1 mapping setup per app, that means that when you change the controller type (freom wii mote to game cube controller for example) then all your set up it's a mess. The best solution is first set up the key mapping for the kunai, and after that, make fit both Game cube and wii controlers to that previous set up, but i lost a lot of time until i figured that out :silly: tonight I will continue testing
Havent tried anythin else. Saw that brawl stars also is compatible but didnt try it yet.

How do you map the controller to basic games? Is there some kind of app or does game genie recognize the controller and you can go in there to remap the controller? Is the remap only applicable to games that support game pad or is it to any game? Reason I am asking is because I don't play pubg shooter game. I play generic games. Can you also use it as a basic Bluetooth controller?
Sorry for a lot of questions, these controllers are quote expensive and there is no return, so I have to make sure it serves my purpose.

It works in a similar way than Air triggers. Actually, exactly the same. when you open the game/app, swipe the game genie from the right side, and you will see a new icon there, called Kunai, just under the air trigger's icon. You press there, and then the whole screen will dim a bit, and there you will overlay the whole layout or the buttons that you need, on the app/game interface, an that set up will be saved for that game/app.
To use it as a bluetooth controller, I think you will need the central piece of the Kunai, which I don't have, because the inclusion of that piece made it to double the price. At least here in china, the options I saw were:
- Bumper where you put the phone in (via USB-C) + Kunai left&right = 499 rmb
- Bumper where you put the phone in (via USB-C) + Kunai left&right + central piece to attach Joycons and where I think the bluetooth connection is = 999 rmb
in my opinion, second option is a bit too much since i dont plan to use the Phone as a docked console, but if you do, it might be an option. the thing is that there is no power button or charging port on the kunai that I have, energy only comes through the usb when the kunai its attached to the phone, thats why I guess the central part (that i dont have) will contain the battery and the bluetooth feature, and somehow justify its price.
Thanks for the response, i pretty much got all the answers needed. Since i map/overlay the button layout, i am definetely getting one. I got the cheap Ipega Bluetooth controller, although it works but i can not find a way to change the layout.
In the US the option to buy the controller that i saw is: _ Gamepad, the Gamepad grip and the Kunai Bumper case = 150 usd (999rmb). I would think this is the second option you mentioned and they is no option for return. This is very expensive that is why i asked the questions. I plan on using the Bluetooth capability of the controller and may end up using it as an additional controller for my Nintendo Switch with the help of an adaptor hopefully it works.
So far do you like using it? is it comfortable enough?

Is the right analog stick that slow on these games? I thought on buying it for COD mobile and some other rpg / mmo games, but the right stick is usually the aim one. If it's much slower it might be a deal breaker for me.. And that's a bummer =/

In my opinion, yes, the right stick sucks for aiming. Maybe it's me, you could give it a try. Good thing is, when the kunai is attached, it stills comfortable enough to aim using the touchscreen and shoot with the kunai trigger, Just ignoring the right joystick. I havent tried any rpg/mmo game yet. If you mention any, I will give it a try.
My mmo games are mostly lineage 2 and world of kings..
But I play more shooters games (well, COD actually..).
Have you tried playing with the sensitivity options in game?
Ot is it a lag issue?
If it's a lag issue I won't buy it probably =/
