If one enables full device encryption in Ice Cream Sandwich, am I correct in assuming that that the internal SD of that device is now not going to be available in the CWM recovery mode? And even if it was, the root fs would not be available? If so, this pretty much would make CWM flashing your device near impossible?
Does CWM even work if you use FDE? Or is it planned/
The question I guess is, when do you input your encryption password? Is it some pre-boot step?
I really want to enable device encryption but I can't find enugh details on how it works.
I did read this post on it., but it doesn't really answer my questions. And it is unclear if it encrypts the internal SD, or just the root FS?

I got a Gnex today from Verizon in the US and I encrypted my phone after I unlocked the bootloader but before rooting. As a result I don't think I will be able to root because it doesn't seem that the modified boot.img that the instructions tell me to use can mount the encrypted system (it sat at the Google logo w/ the unlocked icon for 10 minutes before I pulled the battery and let it boot the stock boot.img) which came up fine.
It seems the only way to decrypt the phone is by doing a factory reset.
That's all I know. That being said, while a custom recovery may work for wiping partitions (such as cache), it would probably be mostly useless until the custom recovery is updated to support the encrypted file systems. I'm a *NIX user and an engineer, but don't have a lot of experience with Android's internals, so take all that with the appropriate sized grain of salt.

Anyone experimented with full device encryption / ROM flashing / SD Card? I'm curious about this as well, but not curious enough to experiment.
I dident try it myself, so i dont exactly know, how this works. But i think device encryption shouldent completly block clockworkmod recovery.
I think it could be a problem to make a backup while your device is encrypted. But i think it shouldent be a problem to recover a old system over an encrypted one. Encryption keeps people without the key away from reading data. This dosent mean you cant wright something over it and replace the locked data with some new one. But then you defenitly loose the old data. I dont think you can flash a new ROM or a recovery without a full wipe. You probably gona loose all the data you had on the old system.
But i general i think this is anyway a good think to do when you flash a new ROM.
I think you could give it a try, without briking your phone. But i dident try it, so i cant take any responsibility.
Would any of you happen to know how to get to the diagnostic mode?

I sonst exactly know hat diagnostic Mode you mean. Depends hat Diagnose you want to run. Do you want to read the logfiles in your phone, wher you can see what ist doing? You could use the app alogcat. An other way would be to run logcat over Eclipse.

I need to edit modem information and enable a diag port for QPST, essentially allowing me to flash it to another carrier.
Is there any new information on this? Any help would be very appreciated!

I encrypted mine after flashing the stock ICS 4.0.3 image and rooting. CWM still loads, but when I try to use USB mass storage, windows tells me it needs to be formatted before the SD card can be used.
You can use titanium backup to make backups of your stuff, and restore them to a non-encrypted phone. I have found no other way to unencrypt the phone than factory reset either. When you encrypt, then go to settings > security > encryption, it just has a greyed out area saying "Phone is encrypted", which is stupid and needs to be fixed.

So if I factory reset the device from CMW I will not loose my pictures or TB in the internal SD?

I have been playing with ICS + FDE for several days doing different things. First off this is:
Nexus S 4G, running Pete's crespo4g OTA ROM
I flashed with CWM which is still on there and runs fine.
However: /data and /sdcard and /system (?) are encrypted and CANNOT be mounted.
To restore you have to 1) make a full backup over USB to a PC of the whole SDcard (or at least the important folders).
2) wipe and reformat everything. This isn't just a factory reset, this kills the sdcard as well.
3) mount (hopefully) the newly reformatted /sdcard and blow your backup from the PC onto the /sdcard
4) use CWM to restore a previous ROM.
That's pretty much it, give or take. Not for the faint of heart. However, if you are concerned enough to want encryption, you don't want to just say reboot recovery and voila all your files are belong to us, right?

Also, the backup to PC part is just your sdcard. It doesn't back up the whole system. There might be a way to do that via adb, I don't know.
So i am running rooted runnig miui.us rom. I just tried to encrypt phone.. It ran for 2 and a half hours and I got impatient. thinking maybe i shouldnt have done it... Then after a little bit of panic i said **** it if i lose data i lose data... so i powered off and back on hoping i didnt and the rom booted back up with all my data intact..... •••••• Wish I had more to report but im not doing that again until someone can confirm that it works fine...... I have tried booting into cwm yet.. If i have an issue when i need to boot illl report back but if you dont hear from me here then assume I was able too.

IT does indeed take a fairly long time to encrypt. If I understand correctly it will build the encrypted partition on a loopback (or something like) before erasing the original (by overwriting?).
I've got more to report. I followed my plan (couple posts back) for unencrypting and reflashing my phone. (Nexus S 4g).
The first bits of this worked fine. I was able to flash CM9 onto my phone (works like a champ btw). While the phone was in recovery I mounted the SD and copied my backup back onto it.
However...
When CM9 booted I STILL got the "unlock your device" screen, still the same password, and it decrypted and booted. That was surprising, but not as much as when I looked for the SD card, it said it was incorrectly formatted! The only thing to do was reformat and copy with the phone on and unlocked.
So lessons learned: 1) a factory reset from _inside_the_ROM_ doesn't remove the encrypted partition at all and
2) As far as I can tell, the SD card _is_ encrypted along with /data
I'd be very interested to hear other's experiences, especially someone who can remove their SD storage.
Undoing FDE
First off - Lacking a device with removable storage to test with all I can tell you is that the sdcard is not accessible by any normal means after FDE is enabled without booting into the encrypted system.
"Removing" FDE required three steps beyond normal:
-Factory reset from within the ROM
-factory reset/wipe at recovery and/or format /data
-once into a running ROM, reformat the sdcard
Once all that is done (in addition to normal setup for ROM) you should be able to operate normally again.

the phone start encrypting after he ask me for a new secure password, rebooting and asking again for my password and surprise!!!.... the password is not match ?!?!
I repetead these steps for 3 times but the same result...the password does not match!!! ?

My gtab is going in for warranty repair for a loose power connector pin. They said they'll swap out the circuit board because it's too hard to correct by soldering.
I have rooted it, and have many paid apps. Is there a way to save an image file like with a PC HD so I can restore it back to what I have now? If not, what's the best way to save/restore as much as possible?

Boot into CWM and make a backup or use Titanium backup to make a backup.
I did use CWM, but it said it backed up "data", which to me means it wasn't a total image with the ROM and apps.

If you do a full backup with CWM, then when you get the new device, BE CERTAIN that you are at the same bootloader version before using that backup. (If you try to use a different BL, then you WILL brick the new device.) However, assuming the same BL version, you can just go into CWM again (assuming you have it installed) and do a full restore. The device should look and act just as it did when you backed it up. Even the ROM will be restored. I do this often when switching between ROMS for reviews, etc.
But, your concern for PAID apps is unwarranted. They are on your Android (Google) account. Even if you get a totally DIFFERENT device, they will show up as paid in the "My Apps" part of the Market. Also, most (???) of the free apps show up on my list.
Most (paid) apps are available to install on as many Android devices as you have (and sign on with the same account). The only exceptions are that some apps are not compatible with certain devices (phone vs tablet, etc) and some developers' license agreements only allow a single install (very few do this).
Best wishes on your replacement. I had the same problem (loose power connector) on my GTab but it was way out of warranty so I had to just solder on an external connector and run wires inside the device. It looks ugly but it works.
bl1.2 to 1.1
I got the gtab back, and it's now on bl1.2 (but still gingerbread), whereas it first came with 1.1, and I rooted it to Gtabcomb. So how do I get it back to 1.1 so I can restore my backup?

Follow the instructions on the site for Code Red (I know you could do yellow but red is safer and you don't want to keep anything currently on the tab anyway.) After the nvflash, instead of installing a new rom, you can go into CWM and restore your backup.
That said, I suggest you don't do this. Most all new development is on the 1.2 boot loader now, even Viewsonic if you call them "developers". Anyway you can restore all your apps, even paid ones, through the market and if you did a Titanium Backup you can restore your data (I don't recommend restoring the apps, just the data after reinstalling from the market). Point is, you are already here (1.2) might as well try something new!
Of course, if you really want your old setup back, you can always try to go back. I personally have never had much luck with backups of any kind and pretty much accept that when I flash or crash, it's time to start over.

If you want to go back to the 1.1 bootloader I have an easy technique to do that--one that does not involve using nvflash. You will need to have ADB installed, though.

Noted. Didn't know there was a better/safer method for switching between bootloaders. Most of the guides/info/instructions I have found recommend an nvflash to the stock rom for the bootloader version you want end up on. I follow these guides when switching versions:

and have never had a problem, so I was only pointing him to information that has always worked well for me. I have never tried the ADB method or the .zip installable method to switch and I didn't want to suggest that he try something I haven't successfully done myself, even if it looks easier.
Anyway please do advise on your ADB method. I still get a little nervous when switching BL versions even after doing it many times over the last year! By the way rajeevvp, thank you for the wealth of information you have posted here on this site.

So I'm back to Bl1.1 and stock ROM, but can't get my backup to work cuz the card with the data won't mount. Now i admit I have some other directories on the card. Is that the problem?

As long as there is a "clockworkmod" directory-tree in the root of the SD card (internal or external), and CWM recognizes the SD card (depending on the version of CWM, it might not use the external SD card at all), you should be able to do the restore.
If you install CWM-2.5.1.1-bekit-0.8, and the clockworkmod directory is on the external SD card, move that entire directory tree to the root of the internal card. CWM v08 uses the internal SD card for backups and restores.
Or else, you can install CWM-2.5.1.3 from bekit.net, which will use the external SD card if one is detected, and fall back to the internal one otherwise.

The ADB method involves flashing VS's stock recovery and then using that to downgrade/upgrade the bootloader using a simplified version of gojimi's downgrade/VS stock upgrade install zip file.
In review, I got a new board installed under warranty cuz of the power pin being bad. Was having trouble mounting the ext-sd.
Anyway, so many hours wasted, but FINALLY got Titanium Backup on it, restored everything, and things were back to normal EXCEPT tons of lockups. Browsing, using apps, didn't seem to matter. Then I remembered I dropping the CPU speed when I first went to Gtabcomb 9 months ago. I think that helped, but in the middle of updating some apps it did it again, and when I rebooted the security pin I had set up didn't work! What next?!?
So obviously needed to reset to factory, but then decided WTH, why not bring this thing up to the highest Android 3 I could. So I'm going to change from bl1.1 to 1.2, and go with Gtabcombover. So my questions are - what's the best way to get to 1.2, and will Titanium be able to restore my backup under 1.2?
Did you do a "wipe data/factory reset" and/or repartition the internal SD card after you installed CWM?

The safest method is to re-install 1.1-3588, then use it to update to 1.2.

hi all, hoping someone can help point me in the right direction, new to samsung devices
had my i9300 a couple of months now - rooted using SGS3 toolkit
I finally plucked up the courage to flash a custom rom and went a bit crazy!!!
Flashed the following roms:
Android Revolution
Revolution Resurrection
3 minit
and finally
Hellybean
Before flashing each new rom I did the following:
Backed up my apps and data with TB pro
a full nandroid back up of my existing rom
followed by a factory data reset and wipes of cache and dalvik
I thought I had covered my butt pretty well but apparently not!!
i really liked hellybean and decided to restore my apps with TB but I got an error "unable to access external sd card" I tried changing the backup location folder which seemed to work, but once back in the main program I get the unable to access error....
So I thought ok i'll restore my nandroid backup!!! but that gives me an error "error restoring /data"
then I tried flashing the 3 minit rom again and then back into cwm and trying to restore that backup and I got an error restoring system this time!!!!
I'm not sure what to do now....have I lost my data for ever???
Is there a way to try and restore using odin??
and any hints for backing up and restoring in the future??

Well on further reading it seems 4.2 has a 'unique' feature!!!
I'm using my own words here to help me comprehend whats going on, so forgive me if i'm not using "android-speak"
When upgrading to 4.2 it creates a new "partition" on your /sdcard called /emulated and all your new 4.2 data etc goes in here....all your pre 4.2 stuff goes into /sdcard/0...
I believe this happens also whenever you flash a new rom
so if you get a flash happy as I did then all of a sudden you get /sdcard/0/0/0/0/0/0...???? can this be correct????
The issue is I have different files in each of these "0" folders. My titanium Backup folder is in /sdcard/0/0/0/0 - which TB cannot access...I checked the /data/media folder which I believe is where my files are actually residing and sure enough in /data/media/0/0/0/0 theres my TB b/u folder
what i'd like to know now is if I can copy that folder to say, data/media without causing havoc?
Of course my next question is can I also move my cwm backup folder from sdcard/0/0/0/0/0/0 to data/media even tho I already have a cwm folder in there but which does not have the same files in it???
The other question is how to figure out which of the sdcard "0" folders hold which rom???
Anyone out there thats been thru the same thing???

ok I just booted to cwm and did a backup just to see where it gets stored to...
Took ext sdcard out to force to int storage
backup saved by cwm to /sdcard
boot to android and fire up Total Commander
the only file in my cwm folder on /sdcard is an older one which cwm will not restore from
navigate to /data/media and sure enought theres my backup
boot back to cwm to restore my backup and cwm says No file found....wtf...
cwm cannot restore the backup it just made??
so back to android and check all my '0' folders and zip nothing?
my backup is in internal storage but NOT /sdcard??
So it would seem, that once you install a 4.2 rom - no apps can find their backups cos theyre
stored in a different location which they are unable to access??

As a new participant to installing custom ROMs I can confirm I'm having exactly the same issue that you're experiencing, my file system adding an extra /0 every time I flash an update to my Carbon ROM. It's causing major issues restoring backups from various apps and I'd also love to know if it's possible to fix this issue.
Any help from the more experienced would be very much appreciated.

Just make sure you use the latest version of clockworkmod or twrp recovery...that should fix your issue

Re-flashed the ROM and now have /storage/sdcard0/0/0/0/0/0/0

EDIT: sorry for the format of my post its difficult to read...not sure why it ended up like that
Using latest recovery only allows cwm to find yr backups, it will not
'fix' the 0 folder issue IF you already have more than one.
I found it best to totally reformat the internal storage and starting fresh.
I manually deleted the 0 folders with a file explorer. Then formatted the
internal SD in cwm.
I also made sure my backups saved to .tar rather than the .DUP format,
as I had also ended up with 1000's of .blob files which totally
confused the situation even more....they would not restore after taking
hours and hours to copy....
As previous poster said....using the latest cwm will prevent the creation
of multiple 0 folders.
Save what data you need to your external SD or PC. I had a couple
older SD cards laying around so I used those.
After that, delete all 0 folders, remember to enable read/write access
to the data partition so they stay deleted!!!
Using the latest cwm or twrp - format data/media,...
If u don't want to use the new .dup/blob incremental backup, change
the option "default backup format" to .tar...this could already be enabled
in the latest cwm, I'm not sure on that!
If you're 'experimenting' with 4.2 ROMs - you will always have a
0 folder, its just how things are done so don't go deleting that one
in future! And you might wanna look at dual booting if you're a wee bit
'flash-happy' like me, lol....I'm using siyahmod app and have 3 ROMs
installed, although I really only use 2. If your apps have a save to
external SD option, use it!!! Likewise with your nandroid backups
And titanium backups, I've had lottsa trouble with TB not being able
to find or access backups even after it finds the backup folder??
Also remember, 4.2 apps are different to 4.1apps, its not good practice
to restore 4.1 apps to a 4.2 ROM or vice versa....things get screwy!!!
If you want to go dual boot, 4.2 ROMs MUST Only be installed as
the secondary rom, it cannot be installed as your primary ROM.
If you only want to run 2 ROMs then use siyah kernel and the stweaks app.
If you want to have 3 ROMs then use siyah kernel and siyahmod multi boot app.
There can be issues with the sjiyahmod app...i find it best to use either whether?
but not both.
That's been my experience anyway....hope it helps and good luck

This is the first time I've tried installing a custom ROM on my VZW S4 (i545) (MDK firmware. Yes, I held out on the OTA since May). I've got a few thoughts and a couple of questions I was hoping could be addressed. I consider myself familiar with flashing ROM's and whatnot, so I won't need hand-holding steps in answer to my questions.
Some info:

MDK Firmware
Recovery: OUDhs CWM Touch Req0very v1.0.3.5
I haven't taken any OTA since I got the phone back in May. This leads me to believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that I'm on Android 4.2.2?
Current ROM: AOKP Nightly Build for 10/31/2013 (MR2)
Thoughts: Holy hell, this ROM is BLAZING fast. I am missing a few features, but none I use regularly (I don't use any of the TouchWiz "smart" features. Damn battery hogs). I was able to flash this over and install GAPPS without any problems. Loading time is incredible, and I love how clean the interface is.
Questions:
Can anyone help me figure out why I cannot install CM10.2? Not sure if that's because I downloaded the wrong version or something, but after flashing it, the screen stays stuck at the Galaxy S4 logo and doesn't move. Maybe I didn't wait long enough, but it surely didn't move in any reasonably expected time (AOKP, by comparison, loaded probably <1 minute). Any thoughts on why this might be? I really want to try CM10.2, so perhaps I should try a different build?
Another question/concern: I downloaded a few different ROMs last night -- CM10.2, AOKP and st0ckdr0id. AOKP installed fine, CM10.2 froze up, but when I installed st0ckdr0id (after wiping out, of course), I got what I think is referred to as a kernel panic. The message was similar to "This phone has software installed on it that Verizon Wireless has determined to be unsafe. I know when I "wipe" /data I can still see all of my files from the previous installation, and I'm not ballsy enough to wipe /sdcard. I guess the question that then coincides with this is if I were able to completely wipe the phone, I assume that would wipe the recovery as well?
Sorry for some of the novice questions -- I have no problem messing with my old TF300T tablet (because NVFlash will save the day), but this is my only phone, only line of communication and SOLE way for me to answer calls for work (24/7 rotating on-call), so it is VERY important to me to ask questions and not go down for more than 1 hour.

I was able to flash this over and install GAPPS without any problems. Loading time is incredible, and I love how clean the interface is.
Questions:
Can anyone help me figure out why I cannot install CM10.2? Not sure if that's because I downloaded the wrong version or something, but after flashing it, the screen stays stuck at the Galaxy S4 logo and doesn't move. Maybe I didn't wait long enough, but it surely didn't move in any reasonably expected time (AOKP, by comparison, loaded probably <1 minute). Any thoughts on why this might be? I really want to try CM10.2, so perhaps I should try a different build?
Another question/concern: I downloaded a few different ROMs last night -- CM10.2, AOKP and st0ckdr0id. AOKP installed fine, CM10.2 froze up, but when I installed st0ckdr0id (after wiping out, of course), I got what I think is referred to as a kernel panic. Wow that's a lot. Let's see if we can get you answers.
1. Switch recoveries to twrp 2.5.0.2. I can't stress the importance of the particular version enough. There are others. This is absolutely the most stable. It's what the devs use. I think then your cm issue will be resolved.
Correct way to wipe with twrp.
1.wipe - >factory reset.
2. Advanced wipe - >check system, data, davlik, cache then wipe.
3. The go back to main screen and install rom.

3. Reserved space. It might say you have 16 gigs but a good size chunk is taking merely by formatting. Then the ROM and programs you have installed of course.

Thanks for your response Mightycaptain! I used CWM as my first ever recovery and am kinda pressed on it, which is why I use it, but I have no issues going to TWRP if that means fixing my issues. Can you elaborate on how to install TWRP in place of my current CWM? I'll do some Googling in the meantime to try to find the answer myself. (I haven't done any flashing or rooting stuff since I got the phone in May!!)

I'm having issues restoring my nandroid backup from the night of the 7th so is it at all possible for me to salvage some of my settings, apps and file backups from those existing files? Once I fix my nandroid, I'm going to keep the nandroid backup in a safe place and I ideally want to have a completely clean phone to start from: That means getting rid of all those old files and other nonsense from before. Is this a possibility?
I'm going to spend my time today trying to extract data from my nandroid backups using ROM Toolbox Pro. If that doesn't work, I have a nandroid backup from the 31st that has 99% of the stuff I need so I'll try to restore that. If THAT doesn't work, then I'm going to cry myself to sleep while trying to remember all of my contacts

You can flash it in your current recovery. It overwrites CWM. I would make sure you have a flashable for CWM just in case you need to go back for some reason. Also the backups between those 2 recoveries are not compatible. But I would nandroid with CWM before flashing twrp. I would also change were you recovery is pointing to for storage to the external SD if you haven't already. After you have cut your current backup and past it there. You can use rom toolbox pro to back up your contacts and restore it once you flash a new ROM.
Now as good advice going forward I would add your contacts to your Google account. That way when you flash new stuff or drop your phone in the toilet as soon as you add your Google account to the phone all those contacts will automatically download. But it is always a good idea to use tibu or rom toolbox pro to back up all your apps and seeing and use that after flashing roms to restore apps and settings.
But honestly I'd nandroid, move my contacts to Google, make app backups. Flash twrp. Then start flashing roms. You could be doing it in an hour. After you flash twrp make another nandroid so you have a twrp compatible backup. Then in a day or so of you are happy with everything delete the CWM backups for space.
Edit: as to extracting things from your current nandroid. Not sure if that is possible for one thing it is compressed not sure how that would work unless you are doing a full restore.
Also for future reference with TWRP. When restoring nandroid wipe like your flashing a new rom before restoring.

Hey thanks again for your quick response!! I'm glad I checked this first, because I'm in my ROM Toolbox app atm and it has an option to let me install TWRP 2.5.0.2 from within the app itself. Should I do it this way?
I will be adding all contacts to Google from now on. Unfortunately I saved all my stuff to my Verizon backup assistant so I just need one last shot at my phone to save all those contacts (manually, if I must) and be able to enter them onto the new ROM.

Understand the hesitancy completely. But with nodding comes risk. It is always about whether you can accept the worst possible outcome.
Rom toolbox pro flashing recovery? I don't know never tried it.
Yes I would download the recovery. Leave it on SD card reboot to recovery and flash like a rom.
Yes nandroid tibu and saving your contacts to Google is the quickest way to get up and running again.

Mighty, just wanted to report that flashing TWRP 2.5.0.2 from within ROM Toolbox Pro worked like a charm. I'm on TWRP as we speak.

*EDIT* Made a backup with TWRP (whose interface is bloody phenomenal, btw), flashed CWM and its working like a charm!! Going to try the st0ckdr0id one as well. Still working on getting that nandroid working so I can recover my stuff and get to customizing!
Hey.
After a random crash/reboot my phone has decided to hang at the glowing Samsung screen.
Ive tried wiping cache and dalvik to no avail, hangs at app installation, and am not prepared to format yet as i have critical data i need recovering first.
I have notes on my stock homescreen note widget and im not sure if it has been backed up on the google account.
Can i access the note file/s through PhilZ Recovery?

If you can still get into CWM, go to 'mounts and storage' and select 'mount SD card'. Then (without leaving CWM) connect your phone to your PC/laptop. Any data now stored in your phone *should* be accessible via the comp.
As to whether your notes will be available, that depends on where the app has stored them........

Also, it looks as though USB Storage Mount in recovery does not make system level partition files accessible in windows, only the storage partition files.
I cant find anything pertaining to the "Memo" application anywhere otherwise..
Any ideas?
If I remember, aren't there options to mount other partitions.....you could try that.........

Just tried it with 3 different kernels and the only option that mounts and is recognised is USB Mount.
The rest, system, efs, emmc etc do not mount.
Any other suggestions?
Also, do you know if the stock samsung Memo app stores the notes on the sdcard partition or the system/emmc/files or whatever partition?
Im happy to wipe data if i know it wont affect my saved notes.

OK......first step, make a nandroid backup of your current setup.
Then wipe cache, dalvik and data and try to reboot.
If that succeeds, download titanium backup and extract the data from your nandroid.
If it fails, reflash your current setup, reboot, download TiBu and extract the data.
Two points to remember.....
1) make the nandroid BEFORE you wipe.....
2) try to copy the nandroid to your PC prior to wiping as well........

If anyone knows where exactly those files are kept on the system level that would be quite handy also.
