Samsung GRAND Prime - SM-G530R4 - LMY47X.G530R4TYU1AOL2
Root (SuperSU v2.65) // XPOSED Framework (v80.0 Lollipop) // FlashFire (v0.27 BETA)
More than willing to write up a full guide, however all of the instructions can be found right here on XDA, and I was just so thrilled to find a way to install Xposed, let alone a working (albeit beta) Zip flash utility.
Will void warranty.

-Follow the XDA forum link above, then onward again to Chainfires' CF-Auto-Root Repository @ https :// autoroot.chainfire.eu
-This is the only firmware listed for the G530R4 device, it WILL work with any available Lollipop 5.1.1 firmware for the G530R4, use Odin tool included with CF-Auto-Root to flash.
-For me, this method did NOT restore stock recovery.img -- although I *think* it was because of KNOX / SELinux; either way it is a non-issue after FlashFire is installed next.

Install XPOSED Framework w. - *Must* be done manually via custom recovery (not available for G530R4 to my knowledge) OR by using FlashFire v0.27 BETA
FlashFire v0.27 BETA *Required*- http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/flashfire-t3075433
- Do not proceed without this application.
-This tool is required to replace the function otherwise filled by a custom recovery capable of flashing .ZIP files directly to the device, from the device.
-MUST- Sign up for beta testing, to install the FlashFire beta APK this worked for me on the first try
- Note: FlashFire action queue will have a warning about Samsung write protection possibly causing issues if the Stock ROM is custom modified (i.e. such as after Rooting with CF-Auto-Root; this did NOT give me any problems; also, I did not change ANY default settings within FlashFire.
- Note: AFTER YOU FLASH THE XPOSED .ZIP the first boot will take much longer than usual, entire flash & boot took ~15 minutes for me.

Thanks a lot for this tutorial! Flashed Xposed on my SM-G530AZ with no problems at all

THANKS!
I appreciate this post a lot, because I guess nobody has a G530R except us and a few others. I find this strange, because you can get USCellular from WalMart with this phone for a little over 100$ and it is only 45$/month for a decent amount of data (and is unlimited after). Anyway, just wanted to thank you for this and ask a few questions.
I was wondering if you have any suggestions or any tips for backing up, to prevent data loss. I used ADB to create a backup that way, but don't know what way is best. I don't care about time and am used to command line, so that isn't an issue. I just don't know Android OS well enough or the backup systems to know what is going to create a complete backup. I was trying Flashify, but am confused about what it is exactly saving and what is needed to restore. I want to make several backups. 1 complete (all apps included) and 1 just the OS. I don't know what is necessary for just the OS and want to make sure that I don't softbrick my phone. I was thinking the backup I made with ADB would be sufficient, but don't know if that covers the AOS. I also want to keep an OS backup on my phone and want to make it as small as necessary, to save space and keep in on my sd card. I don't know which is the better route to go and how restoring works with Flashify, since TWRP and CWD don't work. Do I always need to use Odin or ADB? What is the difference between those? Any help would be greatly appreciated... ESPECIALLY, since, like I said earlier, nobody has this phone. Also, I don't know if I should use the newer versions of Xposed or not. I have heard that they need supporting software and want to keep it simple. Do you know any good rooted-apps? What Antivirus do you recommend after rooting? I have it narrowed down to Bitdefender, avast, 360, CM Security, Kaspersky, or Norton. I believe I am going with Bitdefender, due to the free version being comparable to paid versions of the others. I am great with computers, but want to learn all I can before moving forward. I thank you for helping me with rooting the phone! I have other OS Copies and don't know how to tell if they are good or not... Is there a way? Will flashing them possibly softbrick or even hardbrick my phone if they are wrong? It is just so complicated with a Samsung and having a USCellular phone, since I am also worried about losing my prepaid service and having to buy a new one (if I accidentally clear their info). Finally, are there any apps you recommend for improving performance? I pride myself in boosting Windows this way, but have no clue when it comes to phones. All of this is an attempt to get the virtual gyroscope module to work, so I can play some decent VR games (since they require gyroscope and the ones that don't have crappy graphics). Please let me know if there are any knowledge base resources specific to this phone or any apps, rooting kits, rom apps, or custom recovery programs that are out there that you use. I would greatly appreciate it! ... sorry for droneing, but I am just so excited to find someone else using this phone! TYVM for what you already have done!

Hi guy great looking post I've been searching for a guy like this but Google always points me to g530h or some other model do u have a working custom recovery as well I can't find one and can't port one to save my life I'm at work but I'll try this as soon as I'm home

I know I'm probably a couple years to late to answer your question I just couldn't help myself... First of all since you would be familiar with flashfire to complete this guide that is what you Should use to take your back-ups since it will take everyone of the backups you listed plus it will let you choose the format whether it be .img. zip .tar etc
Second antivirus I honestly don't run one and don't know many people who do on their modded phones.
Third since you followed the guide of The OP and run Xposed greenify and amplify are musts for battery performance I also personally love luckypatcher and if you play Google Play games you will too...
Also if you know computers as well as you say you do their are many guides how to create a TWRP or CWM recovery here on XDA so you could always just make one for this phone.... The only reason there isn't one is most likely because a developer hasn't got sold of this phone seeing as how u.s. cellular is such a small company... Sorry if this was for nothing I just felt like I wanted to put in my two cents

[Guide] How to flash Google Apps.

When I installed nAa's port recently published for our Mini Pro's, I noticed there was no way to use Market, register a Google account, or use any of the Google services that comes by default on most ROM's. This is because Google Apps are protected by copyright, so Cyanogen decided to wipe them from their official ROM. This can be easily solved by flashing them, and although this is very simple and easy, I found that there isn't much talking about this. Also, I saw there was some people asking and getting no answer, so I'd like to share this. Yes, flamers, even if it is REALLY easy or whatever you may say.
First of all, click this link. Here, you will always have the lastest version of the package, so don't worry about the dates. Then, scroll down and click the Download link, like this:

Note: Ignore the other downloads. EDIT: Unless you want other versions of Android. In that case, go to the bottom of this post.
You will get a file called "gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip". Well, just flash that (Install as any other Custom ROM -DON'T WIPE-) and then, when you turn on the phone, you will get the default setup where Google configures your account and download Google Apps such as Market.
Hope this can help someone c:
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Times goes on, and technology advances at insane ratios. Ice Cream Sandwich's CyanogenMod version is here, and so are its Google Apps. We, on the X10 Mini Pro community, have actually the option to install ports of this great Android mod on our phones thanks to the awesome developers we have. Some of us, like me, still decline to use CM9 or ICS ports (In my case, because of the awesome stability and every-day use of the Gingerbread ROMs out there), and thus you should know:
-If you are going to use an Ice Cream Sandwich(4.x) ROM, you should download the CyanogenMod 9 Google apps version.
-If not, if you still preffer to use a Gingerbread(2.3.x)-based environment, download the CyanogenMod 7 Google apps version, the one on the screenshot above on this post.
*I don't know your reasons, but if you would like to keep using an even earlier version, I'll list them for you:
Froyo(2.2) ROM, CyanogenMod 6 (Tiny version for our Mimmi -x10 Mini Pro-) is for you.
Eclair(2.1) is CyanogenMod 5 (Tiny version for Mimmi)
Donut (1.6) is CyanogenMod 4 (Tiny version for Mimmi)
Read ALL in nAa first post in MiniCM7 Rom thread. Look at instructions.

It just says "Flash gapps", it doesnt explain much further and that's what kept me stuck a bit. That is why I wrote this. Not the GREAT guide but will save some minutes of research to some people...
And there is a download link too ;-)

I think if we read carefully nAa said at his post we got no problem for gapps. From 1st flash until now I have no problem on it
Thanks!
There were android ics 4 apps too on the list. have you tried any of them? Just curious.

Lol, market xd Not all GApps are on that package, just the basic ones. Every other Google App you need, you should download it from the market individually.
i cant. The market app doesnt show gmail and through the "web browser" market on my pc it says my device is incompatible.

Describe in detail your problem so I can add it to the main thread c:
I have a bit of a n00b side question i'm afraid. I've flashed a ROM which I love but how do I selectively flash gapps, the Nexus 4 comes without the native calendar, email etc apps, but if I flash the latest gapps these are flashed back onto the device (obviously). What is the best approach get this ROM with the latest Google services apps and not AOSP apps, I want Chrome, Camera, Calendar etc. Should I just not flash gapps and use Titanium back and backup user + system apps or just flash the ROM and then download them from the play store?
Thank you nico, Now i understand why gapp exists!

I followed instructions from a youtube video and installed CyanogenMod 9 on my HTC explorer. Before that I rooted my phone and wiped out factory cache, dalvik cache etc. I also installed one of the gapps-ics-xxxxxxxx-signed.zip (do not remember the datestamp) in the recovery mode by selecting the zip file from mounted USB storage card. Now how should I get back my backed up apps/data and google play to install more ?
N.B.; I took back up using Titanium Backup prior to taking all these steps.
Thanks in advance for any help in this regard.

Sachin.
Thanks Nico,
Almost 2 years later this is still useful info. My first custom Rom install since honeycomb tablet and I had know idea how to flash gApps. Should have guessed from term "flash" that you use recovery but there seems to be a dearth of details. Your post was first google hit.
Sorry for the late responses, I had totally forgotten about this thread! I don't actually know if this will be useful for the ones who asked the questions, but anyways I'll answer them here in case someone else needs them.

Wow, didn't expected to get first place on Google haha Thanks for the appreciation. Yeah, it is not that hard, but I had little trouble doing it while I was new. It's important to understand not to wipe again to flash gapps also!

It depends on how you backed them up on Titanium. Maybe you did a full system backup or just app-per-app backup. If you did a full System backup, try to restore only Data, look into options, custom restore, something like that, there's probably an option there to do that -I usually don't use Titanium haha-. If you did the app-per-app, just look into the list of apps, go to the bottom of the list, and there should appear the apps you backed up, tap on them and restore them with their respective data.
BTW, for the next time, I suggest doing a backup from the Recovery menu, and then do a custom restore > restore Data. Data is where your personal stuff is saved, so no system files will be affected. It may pass down some bugs or troubles because of incompatibility between your backed up ROM and your new one, but normally that doesn't happen.

MD5 is just a file that makes sure your file is not corrupt. If you flashed a corrupt file, you could mess up your phone entirely without any chance to turn it back, so it is important, but you don't have to care about it because it gets checked by the phone itself.

I think you can get the APK for specific apps inside of the ZIP file that you download from Cyanogen, but I don't know if you can just install them right away. If you want to try, just extract the files, delete the APKs of the apps you don't want, and compile it again.
Even though, you actually HAVE to install Google Apps because you need, for example, the Play Store. There's no problem though with having both Google and Nexus apps (Which I think should be the same ones, being the Nexus like the "official" Google phones), I am pretty sure you can install all of them without getting original ones replaced and then deactivate the ones you don't want to use on the phone's Settings, in the Application Manager.
I hope my answers someday help someone. Regards, Nico.

Rooting Information
What is rooting and why should/shouldn't I do it?
Rooting is a way of gaining access to the root directory of your phone enabling you to change every aspect of your phones software that the manufacturer has locked. This enables you to do many things with your device that the manufacturer did not intend. Here are some reasons why people root and why people don't.
Reasons to root:
Get the latest versions of Android on your phone before anyone else.
Try faster and more optimized versions of your phone's software.
Overclocking and underclocking your phone.
Longer battery life.
Theme your phone a lot more.
FREE Wireless Tethering.
Remove unwanted Sprint software.
Reasons to NOT Root:
Not comfortable with troubleshooting your phone and phone problems.
Do not have the time to spend going through countless forums to find solutions to problems.
Possibility to break your phone permanently causing you to go back to Sprint (IF YOU HAVE INSURANCE) to get another one or buy another if you don't have insurance.
VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY. (Can be undone)
Very time consuming and addicting.
Do not know what a "driver" is for a computer.
Have no knowledge of DOS.
So how do I root?
Warnings:
-Don't use any method just because the guide says "ROOT METHOD". Make sure its the latest root method used for your situation. Even this guide will get outdated one day (I'll try my best to keep it up to date).
-Rooting will cause all your information to be lost if you did not properly back them up. You will lose anything saved on the phone, such as contacts (not synced to Google) and applications and settings. Anything on your SD card will still be there such as music and pictures and video.
Basic terminology:
If you are new to Android or not comfortable yet, learn the terminology first! Found a great link to almost all the terms you will run into. If you don't understand something, ask! Its better than turning your phone into a paperweight!

They root your device and give you the option of installing a custom recovery which is used to flash custom software on your phone! If that was in another language, go up and read through the link on Basic Terminology.

You followed the above instructions and have Superuser in your App Drawer. You can also go to the Play Store and download a root checker.
I am rooted now. What can I do?
FIRST MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP! ALWAYS DO THIS BEFORE YOU FLASH SOMETHING. THESE ARE BIG FILES SO TRANSFER THEM TO YOUR COMPUTER TO SAVE SPACE ON YOUR SD!
A nandroid backup basically takes a snapshot of your phone which you can restore. While it will fix most problems, it is not a cure all. It will fix most if not all ROM flashing blunders.
How do I make a Nandroid Backup?
#1 - Go into recovery by powering off your phone first, then holding [Volume Up], [Home Key], and [Power Key] together till you see the Samsung logo flash. Use [Volume Up or Down] to navigate the menus and [Power Key] to select.
#2 - Go to "backup and restore" and hit the [Power Key]
#3 - If you have an SD card, I recommend placing the backup there as it is quite large.
#3a - If you have an SD card, select "backup"
#3b - If you do not have an SD card or don't want to save to your SD card, select "backup to internal sdcard"
#4 - Wait for a very long time till it finishes. Once it does it will bring you back to the menus.
#5 Select "+++++Go back+++++"
#6 Do your business in recovery or "reboot system now"
OK. I made my Nandroid Backup. What can I do now?
You can now flash custom ROMs, kernels, radios, themes, etc. Go to your specific carrier's Development section on the forums. You will find ROMs, radios, kernels, etc there.
For themes and Apps, go to the Themes and Apps section of the forum.
WARNING: For the time being, you MUST flash the ROMs found in your respective carrier's forums. DO NOT FLASH A ROM FOR ANOTHER CARRIERS OR THE INTERNATIONAL VERSIONS GALAXY S3!

How do I flash a ROM/Kernel/Theme/etc
#-1 - READ THE THREAD FIRST FOR THE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS! They will usually be a summarized version of this!
#0 - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AT LEAST 30% BATTERY! IF YOUR PHONE DIES, IT WILL STAY DEAD (most likely). YOU CAN NOT CHARGE WHILE DOING THIS!
#1 - Download the ROM of your choosing from your carrier's forums. It will be in a .zip file format. DO NOT UNZIP IT!
#2 - Save this file to your SD card or internal storage.
#3 - Power off your device.
#4 - Go into recovery by powering off your phone first, then holding [Volume Up], [Home Key], and [Power Key] together till you see the Samsung logo flash. Use [Volume Up or Down] to navigate the menus and [Power Key] to select.
#5 - IF YOU HAVE NOT MADE A NANDROID BACKUP, SEE ABOVE! IF YOU HAVE NOT RESET GOOGLE WALLET AND ARE ON SPRINT! STOP AND GO BACK AND RESET IT!
#6 - Use the volume keys to select "wipe data/factory reset" and hit the power key. Select "Yes -- delete all user data" and hit the power key.
#7 - In the main menu, select "advanced" and then select "Wipe Dalvik Cache" and then select yes.
#8 - Go back to the main menu and use the volume keys to select "install zip from sdcard" and hit the power key.
#9 - What you select next will be based on where you saved it.
#9a - If you saved in the SD card, select "choose zip from sdcard"
#9b - If you saved in the internal storage, select "choose zip from internal sdcard"
#10 - Use the volume keys to select the .zip file you downloaded and hit the power key.
#11 - WAIT FOR IT TO FINISH!
#12 - Congrats! You just performed your first flash. Go back to the main menu and reboot your device.
#13 - Enjoy.

Common Questions
I am getting an Over the Air (OTA) update from Sprint. Should I accept it if I am rooted?
IF YOU ARE ROOTED, DO NOT ACCEPT THIS OTA.
This means that your phone's software is not up to date and it is telling you to update. You must download a ROOTED version of the update and manually flash it. Accepting this will cause you to lose root and worst case, brick your phone. SO DON'T DO IT! lol
I rooted using ABC's method. Do I need to root again using XYZ's?
No. Once you are rooted, you are good to go.
I turned my phone into a paperweight/bricked it/"borked" it/its just not working no matter what I do. What can I do?:
No information yet!
If you have Sprint's Total Equipment Protection Program, you are in luck. They changed their policy on October 23rd. Here are the details of what it covers.
http://www.phonenews.com/sprint-tepsr-changes-next-week-13303/
If the phone is beyond repair, you will have to go through Asurion and pay the $100 deductible. TEP does not cover rooted phones. You have to go through Asurion.
If you don't have TEP, everything except water/fire damage and lost phone replacements cost $35 per incident as long as the phone is not beyond repair. If it is beyond repair, you will have to buy a new phone.
What is PRL?
PRL stands for Preferred Roaming List. Its a list of roaming towers in your area. Its best to keep this updated in crappy coverage areas.
What is PRI?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751935&page=7 <- Debate on what it stands for. (REALLY?!)
In actuality it is called "Product Release Instructions" and is essentially a list of settings for the radio. It's the PRI which uses the PRL to enable data roaming by connecting it to towers/cell sites listed in the PRL and for other things such as to allow calls to interrupt an active data session (ring-through).
How do I update my PRL/PRI?
Go to Menu > Settings > System Updates > Update PRL + Update Profile.
I see "deodex" and "odex" ROMs. What are those?
Basically if you want to theme your ROM you want to use deodexed ROMs. Odexed ROM's are made to be streamlined. There is a performance difference. Deodexed ROM's will take longer to boot up because everything or almost everything is unpacked. Odexed ROM's will boot faster and be more responsive.

Battery - Common Questions and Problems
What is the best ROM + Kernel combination for battery life?
There is no right answer for this. Battery life is affected by so many factors, the only thing you can do is trial and error. Here are most of the factors that can affect battery life:
-Phone Settings (Haptic feedback, screen on duration, auto sync, radios, etc)
-ROMs
-Kernels
-Overclocking + underclocking
-Apps
-Signal strength
-Roaming
-Battery type
-Battery stats
-Calibrating the battery
-PRI
-PRL
-The water you drank the other day
-The **** you took just before
So how do I improve battery life?
No information yet.
Common Problems:
I created a bug thread check that first!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722363
Standard Troubleshooting For Many Flashing Problems:
-Try Rebooting. Most problem will be solved this way.
-Was it fine before your Nandroid Backup? If so, restore your backup.
-If you flashed something and are having issues, did you wipe your data/cache/dalvik? If not then do it and reflash.
-If you are still getting problems, the file is most likely corrupt or outdated. Try redownloading and making sure the file is updated for your ROM + Version #
-If the file is updated and NOT corrupt, SEARCH FIRST IN THE FORUMS OR GOOGLE! You will be surprised on the answers you can find in 15 seconds of searching.
-Can't find any solution or workaround? Then make a post in that thread with details of your problems, as well as ROM, error messages, etc.
I am getting random Force Closes (FCs) after flashing ****.
Did you wipe your data/cache/dalvik? Also go to Mounts and format /system. If not do a Nandroid Restore to the backup you should have done before flashing and then wipe data/cache/dalvik and then reflash. See if you still get a FC. If you do, there might be a problem with whatever it is you flashed with the ROM you are using. Check on the thread you downloaded it from for support.
I am stuck in a boot loop.
If you flashed a new ROM and you are stuck in a bootloop, you probably didn't erase your data/cache/dalvik. Try that and reflash your ROM. This will fix most boot loop issues. If it was from something else, make a post in your respective threads or in Q+A.
I am stuck in a NAND Backup!
Pull your battery and restart the backup. You might also want to erase the NAND backup that failed by going to your respective NANDROID backup folder on your SD card.
I am a MAC user and I downloaded ____'s ROM and it doesn't work.
Macs will recompress the file. Use Firefox to download and make sure it doesn't recompress the file. It should work then. Either that or use a Windows based PC.
I tried to NANDROID BACKUP and I got an error message saying "Run 'nandroid-moble.sh' via adb!"
Your SD card is full.
I am having issues with Google Wallet saying it is no longer secure. What is wrong/how do I fix it?

Custom ROM Reviews
This will be a section where I will do a thorough review of custom ROMs. These are based on my own usage and your mileage may vary depending on what apps/etc you use. I will take requests to do certain ROMs and I will post up a schedule to do reviews so you can send me questions ahead of time. Please also note, that I will only test Sprint ROMs because I only have a Sprint device. I will take reviews from other people on different carriers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Each ROM will be broken down as follows:
ROM Name:
ROM URL:
Version/Build:
ROM Type: (AOSP/TW/AOKP/ETC)

Stability:
Features:
Bugs/Issues:
Final Thoughts:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ROM Name: Sprint CM10 Preview Build
ROM URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778266
Version/Build: 7/20 Preview Build
ROM Type: CM10 (AOSP)
Recommended for: Experienced flashaholics
Stability: This is a preview build just for the community to see what is in store for their phones on Jelly Bean with CM10. There are bugs expected with this. However for a preview build, this is surprisingly stable. This build came out today and while it is still too early to say it is fully stable, it is surprisingly smooth and as of this moment, it is stable for me. I did run into a very annoying com.android.phone FC loop in the previous build that wouldn't go away till you wipe and reflash the ROM. I'm waiting to see if it happens again on the 7/20 build.
Features: Jelly Bean and all its features. http://developer.android.com/about/versions/jelly-bean.html
It is an AOSP ROM so it has better integration with Google products like Google Voice and no bloat. It is a CyanogenMod ROM so it is made for performance. It is very snappy and will only get faster and smoother once they integrate Project Aurora. If you want to test Jelly Bean, you can flash this. However you are warned that it may crap out on you. If you need 100% stability, then don't flash it.
Bugs/Issues: The camera will take pictures but I did get a force close (FC) on the Gallery and it will freeze. The previous builds did have a green hue over the camera but that is fixed. The widget toggle buttons are being worked in but they are not working as of this build. Facebook integration with contacts isn't good. Contact images do not get linked/joined with existing Google contacts. Bluetooth music does not work. Audio over Bluetooth is not working either. Phone calls over Bluetooth work but it is a little distorted.
Final Thoughts:
The reason why I jumped to CM10 despite knowing it is buggy is to try out Google Now with the new speech engine and Project Butter and it did not disappoint. It took a day or so to get Google Now to learn my habits but it was pretty much on point! The new speech recognition engine is AMAZING! Very quick and the most accurate I've used to date and I've used a lot. Overall, I would recommend this for anyone who wants to test the latest and greatest Android flavor but can work though bugs and issues.

Rooted Application Reviews
This will be a section where I will do reviews of rooted applications. These are based on my own usage and your mileage may vary depending on what apps/etc you use and what you use it for. I will take requests to do certain applications and I will post up a schedule to do reviews so you can send me questions ahead of time. Please also note, that I am on a Sprint device. I have bought a few paid rooted applications and utilities but I can't buy them all. I hope that I can get some donations going so I can buy more of these applications to review. If you are an application developer and would like me to review your application, please PM me and I'll toss one up.

Application Name: Titanium Backup
Developer: TITANIUM TRACK
Developer's Site: http://www.matrixrewriter.com/android/
Version/Build: 5.4.1.1
Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xMiwiY29tLmtlcmFtaWRhcy5UaXRhbml1bUJhY2t1cCJd
Paid/Free? Both.
Price: $6.58 USD
Application Description: You can backup, restore, freeze (with Pro) your apps + data + Market links. This includes all protected apps & system apps, plus external data on your SD card. You can do 0-click batch & scheduled backups. Backups will operate without closing any apps (with Pro). You can move any app (or app data) to/from the SD card. You can browse any app's data and even query the Market to see detailed information about the app.
Stability: Very stable. It works with all ROMs I've used across many devices.
Features: TOO MANY! Look in the Play Store for features
Bugs/Issues: Very little if any.
Final Thoughts:
Titanium Backup has been on all the phones I have used and it is VERY VERY VERY handy. I highly recommend everyone use this for backups. The pro version allows you to auto upload your backups to the cloud so you don't waste space on your device plus other features. It also helps you get rid of certain apps and freeze them which can be really handy. There are some quirks but not with the application. What I mean is if you restore the wrong application or an application that is not compatible with your ROM, it will cause FC errors. Same thing with deleting a system application.

Its safe; I'm rooted and using TB like a boss, before this thread was updated.
Though I would like to say that at the end where you list the chmod permissions, you can alternatively just install busybox from the market, after you have installed cwm and flashed the super user zip in recovery.
And with that, my support for this thread too begins.

Hey power to ya man. You know where to find me.
Noticed people having trouble getting to recovery. For me, trick was NOT holding down power, rather pressing once while holding home and volume down.
Just wondering, does the process that flashes cwm recovery through Odin, then flashes the root through the recovery, does that manipulate the kernel at all? And if it does will I have to worry about signal issues or low bars? I want to keep my phone as stock as possible, but want to remove bloat, and possibly tether. But want to maintain the integrity of the kernel by not making drastic change to it. Can someone explain to me what this root method actually does to allow access? Thank you for your time.
I will update this to combine all information across carriers soon.

Basically hold down the power button, but when you see that blue flash that says recovery at the top of the screen, release the power button.

Nabi 2 ROOT Installer

Nabi 2 ROOT Installer
Use this script to install TWRP Recovery, ROOT, and Google apps to your Nabi 2 tablet. Step by step instructions are included within the installer. While there is another more complex script (by aicjofs, and which was offline when I originally needed it), this one is smaller and simpler. It is based on jmzrootpackage, and I had some inspiration from Victoria's video. I started this with the intention of only making things just a little bit smoother. I ended up adding more than I had originally intended. This installer contains information through each step to help guide you through the rooting process. Linux instructions can be found here.
NOTE: (Jan, 2015) There are newer versions of the Nabi on the market now, and I do not have any with which to test this script, only the original Nabi 2. As a result, it is unlikely that this will get any further updates. The newer models most likely will not work very well, or simply not work at all with this script. If you are capable and so inclined, I officially invite you to use this script in your own rooting project. Just give credit where credit is due.
Summary:
Helps guide you step by step
ROOT your Nabi 2
Install Google apps
Will NOT wipe your data
No Android upgrading message
No wifi issues
Install TWRP
Simple update to TWRP
Reported to fix touch screen issues in TWRP
Includes ADB files
Automatically backs up before rooting
Includes PdaNet driver installer
New Remove Wings (for Nabi 2 v2.1+)

1. Check For Proper Drivers
Use this option to check if your computer has the PdaNet drivers communicating with your Nabi2. This is a simple check for existing connectivity. Nothing will be changed. This will also display your Nabi 2 serial number.
2. Install PdaNet Driver
In order for this installer to properly interface with the Nabi 2, you must have the PdaNet driver installed on your computer. This option will start the PdaNet driver installation process for you. Requires Windows 8/7/Vista/XP (32 or 64 bit). If you already have the drivers installed, you can skip this step.
3. Install Recovery and Root
This will install the touch enabled TWRP recovery to the tablet, as well as copy over the rooting file. Use the TWRP install button to select the rooting file and apply.
4. Install Google Apps
After your Nabi 2 is rooted, use this option to install Google apps. After it is copied over, use the TWRP install button to select the Google apps file and apply. Reboot the Nabi 2 (parent mode) and then update the Google apps to the current version of Google Play.
5. Update TWRP
Here you can choose from two experimental versions of TWRP, or drop-in your own custom version. You are given the options of testing and installing. That way you can make sure it works with your Nabi 2 before you flash it.
6. Remove Wings
This option only applies to Nabi 2 system version 2.1+. With version 2.1, Fuhu filled up the /system partition. As a result, there is not enough room to add Google Apps to the Nabi 2. Removing Wings will free up nearly 105 MB, and will allow Google Apps to be installed. You have the option of removing the files with or without backing them up first.
9. Exit
As you might expect, this closes the program window.

I do not have access to the original Nabi, so I cannot confirm whether it will work or not. Most likely it would not work. As for the parent/nabi mode, YES. The process used in this script does not in any way delete or remove your data or Nabi 2 system information. It only adds ROOT and Google apps. Once you have root you could remove whatever you want.

Have you tried wiping the cache/dalvik before flashing GApps? Please post back with some information about your Nabi 2. What is your Nabi kernal #? Have you verified that root is functioning correctly? Is there enough free space available on your Nabi 2 to allow installation of GApps? Is there anything else that you have attempted but did not list above?

Firstly thanks for the reply. Secondly the Nabi in question just received a update in the software and while I was under the impression that it was a nabi one the software clearly showed that the file was Nabi2 update. So with that being said, does this root installer still work on the latest update?

With the latest update (2.1), there seems to be some changes in the Nabi2 that prevent the Google apps from properly loading. Everything else seems to work fine (meaning your Nabi2 still gets rooted). There are some custom rom's in the wiki that include root and gapps.
I am looking into a fix regarding this. I have a possible work around, but it requires manually moving some files. Although, I have not tested it yet so it may not work.

Are you using Nabi2 kernal 2.1.27? Please post a link to where you got your Gapps so that I can take a look.
Gapp is from your software, please check attached file for version

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant the "play store" that you said that you installed from the "everything nabi" website. I need the link to there, so that I can see what it is that you installed. If they have more than one version listed there, then I need to know which one you downloaded and installed.
You have Nabi2 Product version 2.1-release-keys
I noticed from your screenshot that the Nabi2 has a new entry: Edition NABI2-NV7A-US which does not exist yet on the one that I have here (which is much older).
Have you done anything to verify that you have properly functioning root on the Nabi2?
I remember that screen cover. A little window cleaner, and those white lines come right off. I actually used that as the screen protector for a while. Until I got an actual screen protector that fit the entire screen completely.
Simple answer is the system partition is full. Gapps and full 2.1.27 don't fit. Have to delete something to have gapps fit on /system. I discuss a bit of it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45866724&postcount=1647
That solve my problem, thanks a lot for you both !

A new Beta version (1.5.0) has been posted. It addresses the full partition issue with the Nabi2 v2.1+ update, and introduces updated *.zip files as the beta element. For those interested, please read the updates on the first post, test, and post back your experience with it.
More would have been included, but due to unrelated RL issues I had to save the rest for a future update.

Need help getting help! Newbie looking for solid tutorial on rooting, for android 4.4

I have an old ZTE n817 (AKA Obamaphone) running android 4.4.4, with less than 2 gig internal storage, and a 14 gig SD card. I rooted this phone years ago; I distinctly remember using busybox and some other tools on it in the process. But I just reset it to factory specs because I want to make it an educational tool for my toddler grandson, and I wanted to make sure all the, ahem, age inappropriate content was gone forever, cause I seriously don't want to explain to the little ankle biter's parents why I left that stuff for him to find. I hadn’t used it since we got a sweet deal and switched to using iPhones, so my android skills are atrophied, but I’m comfortable with taking a crack at rooting it again. Unfortunately, I failed to document my previous work, so I have no idea how to reproduce the sterling results of my original efforts. The whole point of this is to enable moving apps to the SD card, so my grandson can have more than a couple of apps/games to use. Plus the phone is already slowed down due to available internal storage being 325 megs.
I've googled the pants off this topic, seems like all the root methods for this phone assume you have already used Kingroot, which I understand is not advisable. As I did this before without Kingroot or another one click product, I’m hoping to find a tutorial on how to do that. However, since the internet is only eternal for people who have embarrassing personal information posted, I have resigned myself to rooting the phone however I can. Towards that end, I am looking at this method: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/howto-zte-quest-n817-locked-bootloader-t3587174
Unfortunately, the above method is beyond my ability to implement, and does not even make sense to me. For instance, the “The twrp app will not work until you have supersu installed” indicates I have to root the phone before I can root the phone? Plus the whole description is assuming more knowledge than I possess. Just yesterday I got desperate and tried framaroot, but it didn’t even make it to the exploit drop down list, and the Aragorn exploit wasn’t doing it. I’ve seen a couple of hints that iroot works on this phone, but the one click methods sound like they ultimately do more harm than good. And so far, all the tutorials I have seen for rooting a phone assume the reader already knows how to root a phone.
What I’m hoping for is a link to a method of rooting this thing, without expecting the reader knows Command Line Linux and Klingon. Or to an app that will allow me to move apps to the SD card without rooting (or Klingon). Or to a one click rooting product that won’t end up being a problem. I’ll even be happy to find a tutorial that covers all the bases of the rooting process, with complete descriptions of the tools like twrp and rashr and supersu.
Your best bet may be DirtyCOW (Dirty Copy on Write) root. If the device has a kernel version 2.6.x.x up to 3.8.x or 3.9.x you may be able to use this tool. It allows you to replace a process of a file which size is greater or equal to the size of the modded one. This also allows you to write to read-only memory (but if not in read-write mode after that it won't save your modification) filesystems. This may be a tool that works and you can install SuperSU binaries afterwords and have full root access
If that don't work just use KingRoot and use the app SuperSU me app to switch to SuperSU

If so, then make use of it.
Take note that only apps can get moved if the app itself supports APP2SD.
BTW: You don't have to root phone's Android permanently by so-called One-Click-Rooting tools, a temporary root most times is sufficient, IMHO.

In the meantime, my daughter in law found an old HTC Desire 526 Verizon Prepaid laying around. So I did a factory reset, pulled the sim out, moved the SD card from the ZTE to it, and installed the apps I wanted my grandson to have. Still has 1 gig of internal memory left, so hopefully that will last him a while. I may end up having to try rooting it, as 1 gig will get used up quick, and unrooted it's not letting me move apps to SD, or get rid of the bloatware. But finding a factory ROM for it may be a problem, HTC won't provide one, and I doubt verizon's going to either.
One person mentioned using Kingroot and then use the SuperSU e to switch to SuperSU, maybe I'll try that later.

I keep seeing warnings about using KingRoot, but I've also seen numerous threads on these forums where the posted rooting method assumes Kingroot has already been used. Is it really as simple as "root with Kingroot, install and run SuperSu Me APK, and you're rooted and good to go"?
I also have moved the SD card from the poor, anemic ZTE to a poor but slightly less anemic HTC Desire 526 Verizon Prepaid (android 5) we found lying about. After doing a factory reset, pulling the sim, and installing the apps I want my grandson to use, there's about 1 gig internal memory left. Eventually I'll try to get him a decent android tablet, like the Amazon Fire 7 (with the most rugged case I can find), but I want him to cut his 2 and a half year old teeth on the HTC. He's using his mom's android phone now, under her supervision, and he's taken to it like a duck to water. At first I thought letting a kid that young use a smart phone was sketchy, but he's really surprised me. The HTC will let her much newer android phone survive a lot longer, and keep him from trying to answer her calls. But that 1 gig of free storage on the HTC won't last long, and it's not letting me move any apps to the SD card, so if Kingroot and SuperSu can safely give me root, I'll try it out. I can always do another factory reset, right?

Try Dr Fone Root, it will root your device with SuperSU.
Just don't disconnect your device while it is being rooted. A factory reset might not fix it and you will end up flashing the firmware.

Wondering why you don't install apps on external SD-card by default, but on internal memory first and then try moving these apps to external SD-card?

Disable Setting Suggestions

I've found some information on this topic but the solutions I've found either don't really work or involve concepts that I don't understand. The closest thing I found to something I could use is to disable Setting Suggestions (which requires ADB) but that also disables the settings search function which is not acceptable to me.
My standard solution would be to enable Setting Suggestions when I need to use the search function and disable it when I'm done but since I can only disable Setting Suggestions by connecting to a computer with ADB installed this makes it too much of a pain to be practical.
Is there a way to use ADB to setup Setting Suggestions so that it can be disabled from within Settings?
Or is any other way to do this that can be explained to someone that barely knows how hook up a usb cable and run adb?
What are you referring to by "Settings Suggestions"?
Screenshots please?

AFAIK It's a system package that controls the display of suggestions within the Settings package as well as the settings search function.
If you have a custom rom, such as crdroid, you can disable it from the crdroid settings.
Otherwise, you can try rooting and uninstalling the package to see if that works.

I was afraid that this would be the answer.
So this brings up another more basic question. I'm very new to all of this and so far all I'm able able to do is to use ADB to disable or uninstall user 0 apps that I otherwise could not modify from within the Settings app on my Walmart tablets. So what is the next thing I need to understand so I can have more control over how my devices function?
Which is simpler and less drastic, rooting a device or somehow getting a new rom? Is there any other option besides these?
I've seen some reference to backing up your device before trying these types of steps. Can you point me to any documentation that explains how I can backup and (more importantly) restore my tablet if something bad happens. This seems like a prerequisite to anything beyond ADB disable/uninstall.
I actually have a fair amount of experience of getting back to my current state from a factory reset so there's always that, but a reliable backup/restore could certainly save me hours of tedious configuration.
The bottom line is that I really don't know enough to even ask the right question. Any guidance you can provide is appreciated.
Rooting is probably the safer option. You can try using KingoRoot, it's a one-click root tool and is super easy to use. Try it a couple of times, if it keeps failing, you'll have to install a twrp image for your device and root via magisk. Since you're on a wallmart tablet though, I don't think you'll be able to get twrp for your model. You'll have to use fastboot to extract the boot.img, then patch it via magisk and flash it again to obtain root. Magisk is your best option for root.
Installing custom roms probably isn't possible for your device if its a generic wallmart tablet. If it has a brand name, please mention it. It will most likely be a random generic chinese tablet, so a custom rom for those is out of question.
Nandroid backups are used to backup your entire device. You can also take a TWRP backup if twrp is installed. If you mess up the rom using root (such as uninstalling a system module, or if the system bootloops or has any issues after deleting the module, a factory reset will not fix it, you will have to reflash the rom, most likely using sp flash tool if you have a mediatek soc in your device.
Considering that it may be a generic chinese tablet, it's probably better not to take the risks of rooting. I recommend that you try the KingoRoot app, and KingoRoot with your PC. If that doesn't work and you still want root, you're going to have to look into manually patching your boot.img. KingoRoot doesn't have any risks as far as I know, so do give that a try.
Please mention the tablet brand, if it is somewhat popular (and isn't a mediatek powered tablet), it may have twrp available for it unofficially, but don't get your hopes up.

Rooting isn't safer than just disabling/deleting an app via adb. Which can be restored at anytime and doesn't interfere with device integrity

I tried adb removing stock bloat on my j510f, didnt work. Tried root and it did, so naturally i recommended it. Ofcourse, adb is the best option. OP even mentioned in his first post that he saw something related to using adb to remove bloat.

The tablet brand is Onn. I couldn't find out much about it other than it seems to be pretty much exclusive to Walmart.
However your response has pretty much convinced me that dealing with the specific question I posted in the OP is probably beyond my abilities at this time. I do have a vague idea of what you're talking about but that's about it.
I do understand that factory reset only restores the rom which is why factory reset can't unwind an update nor fix a screwup in the rom regardless of how it got there.
Ultimately what I am trying to accomplish is to gain whatever understanding and ability I can so as to have more control over the multitude of android devices I have in my life.
So far the limit of my bag of tricks is adb disable/uninstall. Yesterday I did a search of adb commands and found there's a lot more to adb than just disable/uninstall. I found a number of sources ranging from the offical seeming Android Debug Bridge (ADB) Commands Manual and Android Debug Bridge (adb) to adb cheat sheets and command lists put out by random folks and found them to be more than a bit intimidating.
However, the thing that caught my eye as having the most potential use to me are the following:
adb backup -apk -all -f backup.adb (backup settings and apps)
adb backup -apk -shared -all -f backup.adb (backup settings, apps and shared storage)
adb backup -apk -nosystem -all -f backup.adb (backup only non-system apps)
adb restore backup.adb (restore a previous backup)
These commands are simple on the face of it but there's still a lot that's not obvious. For example I assume that you can't use backup and restore fix a totally bricked device. On the other hand I would guess that if you haven't messed with the rom you can always do a factory restore first and then use the backup to save you the trouble of reinstalling and configuring all your 3rd party apps as well as restoring all the system disable/uninstalls save in the backup. Are my assumptions anywhere near corredt?
It's clear that I'm not a devloper, I'm not even a software engineer. I'm a retired digital hardware design engineer that would prefer not to get involved in all these details but can't help myself from trying to get things to work the way I want them to.
The essence of my question boils down to what next baby step can I take that extends what little control I have over my devices. Can you point me in ther right direction?

AFAIK I have disabled all suggestions, but that didn't stop suggestions made within the Settings app.
I did go through your link, [NO-ROOT] Samsung OneUI Optimization Guide - Settings, Fixes, Debloat, and ADB Features but didn't see anything related to suggestions please let me know if I'm missing something.
The biggest problem as I see it is the extreme variation from one brand of phone to another or one tablet to another tablet and even more so if comparing a tablet to a phone. I probably don't have even half of the stuff you list in your guide on my tablet.
