FireTV running Kodi off external USB hard drive through USB powered Hub - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have a FireTV box and stick which I've been running Kodi on it for quite sometime...actually being the only reason why I bought them in the first place was for Kodi. Now I have been seeing some modifying the way it loads rather then loading into Amazon it loads into Kodi or another OS all together where they have been able to customize the layout to their liking, having Youtube, emulators and games and other stuff they use on a regular basis, I'm assuming to be able to do so you need to root it which I'm a little concern where I wouldn't want it to break or have issues in the long run and I can't revert back. I have a External USB drive which is plugged into a powered USB hub to my FireTV box and Kodi is running off this drive and I would love to be able to have all my emulators and games run from it as well again I don't know if this is all doable but I would love to be able to do so, perhaps have everything running off the external drive being that the local drive is just not big enough to store everything. What do you guys recommend? I couldn't find a guide on how to proceed.
I really appreciated your help on this and I'm sorry for the long thread.
Thank you very much!!!

Wow, I'm a little surprise no one has any suggestions?

I guess I'm not on the right forum for answers
I'll post on another site.

Stream Videos to Tab from external HDD

I did not write this up, so a thanks goes to the original author of this... Ahmad Rafiq from HACKSlurp. I just thought it was very useful, and may be worth adding to this forum, so enjoy!
Do you have a large collection of movies and pictures stored in your external hard drive and you just can’t decide which stuff you want to move to your Android tablet’s 32GB SD card especially when you are traveling? You can actually stream data directly from your portable hard drive to your tablet essentially increasing the storage capacity of your tablet beyond SD card.
Here is how you can do it!
Step 1
You need to prepare your external HDD by formatting it to FAT32. If you have stuff in your hard drive, which is in NTFS state, you should move it temporarily to some other media while you prepare your hard drive.
This is perhaps the only downside to this procedure. But depending on your usage you can make this step worth your effort. This is just a one time only step so don’t be afraid to carry out the arduous task of moving your items from and to your HDD.
Step 2
Connect your portable HDD to your tablet.
Step 3
Make sure your USB switch state is set to ‘Host’. Get this free USB Mode Switcher app (requires ROOT access) if you don’t know how to do it.
Step 4
Switch to your file manager app and wait for it to detect your hard drive. It might take sometime for the app to detect your external drive during which time you should keep refreshing, but once it has detected, the streaming is flawless.
If you have followed the above steps properly you should now be able to watch your HD movies on the go!
The same procedure can also be applied to nearly any USB device like pocket drives etc. This can really come handy as you can transfer your documents from your pen drive to your tablet and edit them on the move!
I work full time, so I havent been able to test this on the sony S, but I plan to this coming weekend (tomorrow), I will add notes as to what I discover, after paying around with it a bit. I know it works on my Acer Iconia, lets keep our fingers crossed!
You say you need root access in order to do it successfully. I don't think anyone's made an exploit to obtain root access for the Tablet S yet. If I'm wrong, you better be sure to tell me how to obtain!! So many things I want to do once I get root!
Good luck though, i'm highly interested in this idea of external hard drives and thumb drives.
Yeah that root access part kinda threw me too. Im gonna try it this weeken, and will report back. I am also going to see what I can do to root this bad boy! I hope I can make something work.
Ok I've just hooked I'm my usb hard drive and so far i'm having mixed success.
Firstly the usb powered option did not work. The light on my HDD came on but i couldn't feel it spinning.
I attached a mains connections to it and it started to spin. A message popped up on the tablet saying "Recognising media" it asked if i wanted to open the Sony data transfer app that comes pre-installed. I declined and tried to view the files via a couple of different file managers but couldn't seem to find the HDD in either of them.
So i went to the Sony data transfer app and it recognised it fine. from there i can either stream from the HDD of transfer the files to the tablet. All the files tested were 720p TV & BD rips and they worked fine with MX Video player.
Sorry this so long winded but hope it helps.
I did all this without going through targazzi's method.
Probably not what you are after but if you have a nas drive you can connect to it wirelessly very easily using built in dlna app. It plays mp4 3gp etc videos no problem and i imagine other files will be supported as long as you have an app to deal with them properly. Another option is file expert app from the market - i mapped same drive as a network drive in it and can see all files. Haven,t bothered putting an sd card yet

I was able to connect my PCH using dlna and I could see all my files but couldn't play most of them and the ones that I could play were stuttering.

I used to have an issue with my DLNA server as the videos either have no sound or the video is stuttering. After several trial and errors, I was able to find the right setting for most of my DLNA devices. I use Freemake video converter (it's free, Google it)... then use Freemake to convert the videos to MP4 with bitrate not more than 1400 kbps, and AAC (stereo) audio format. Hope this helps.
well i didnt get a chance to play around with it over the weekend, I ran outta money before I could buy the USB cable for it. (Sad seeing as how its only $14, but thats life when your married with kids, and in the military, dumping your money into stuff to prepare to go to a field excercise for a few weeks)
requires ROOT access?
So your Sony Tablet S been rooted already?

Media Center Rom

I am working on a mediacenter Rom and I am looking for suggestions for remote control apps for android to control the Q anyone have any good suggestions on controlling the Nexus Q over bluetooth or wifi. This is my only hiccup for this rom.
How far have you got with the ROM yet?
right now i use Bluetooth mouse/keyboard combined with adb over wifi, do you need more control than this?
I've tried a VNC approach but it was a bit strange doing everything from a browser window, but using VNC I used the VMLite_VNC_Server_1_0_4.apk install on Nexus Q
i use ADB and a BT mouse myself at the moment to navigate through the Q. did you manage to add a different launcher on startup?
BT Keyboard?
The tutorials on this board for getting BT Mouse work fine for me. I can't get BT Keyboard working though. If anyone has had success with that let me know!
---------- Post added at 08:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:26 AM ----------
Also I've compiled the kernel to support NFS and CIFS. Recommend adding that to your ROM.
Plex has worked best for me in terms of a consistent playback. This requires Plex media server to be run somewhere else. As its transcoded you can tune the bitrate for consistent playback. I've tried a variety of other players accessing the media via NFS, however none of them can handle full bitrate MKV. Probably it just exceeds the capability of the device.
Romz
My goal is to have a rom others can flash pretty easily and use an existing android device to navigate on the Q.
I'm honestly just figuring out what basic things to throw on the Q for now I might just put a way to flash gapps, but install xbmc.
Heres the process right now that im stuck with now:
-Nandroid restore using the same method I posted for restoring.
(I've been researching the possibility to have a script push and restore the the rom)
-use OTG USB with keyboard and mouse to pair with device
(I've used tablet remote from the play store but the only issue is that the text input does NOT work so searching for things on the store sucks)
But since most people got them at IO the current owners should be pretty confident with adb.

How is the play store working on your ROM? able to download/update?
Are you using OTG USB with a hardware adapted or software? (just wondering)
Why do you need to Nandroid Restore the ROM as opposed to making a flashable zip and installing it over CWM?

1. Haven't tried/ im messing with the build.prop
2. Im using an OTG cable with a USB Hub w/ a keyboard and mouse
3. CWM is a mess right now the text is super tiny on a 1080p tv and I can't get a hold of the dev on rootzwiki to get the source from him so I fix the screen resolution.

Cool
What's ur progress on the ROM so far? What source are you building it from?
Would it be easier to get the Q working using CM and then just add the xbmc app to act as a media centre? Would probably be less dedicated by could utilize the Q's full potential.
Just my 2 cents.
By the way, please don't get me wrong. I fully appreciate your work!

I think the perfect remote software AND the perfect launcher just don't quite exist yet.
One suggestion though... you can probably get the tablet remote to work properly if you tweak the key layout in your rom as I've described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892359
You could remap each of the letters to whatever key input is being sent by tablet remote.
Keep us updated on your progress!

I agree better to have a full CM ROM on here than just an app as the front, but I think he is making a a full ROM, but not sure..

I don't see why some off you are having problems controling the Q I only used adb once to root and navigate to get my stuff ready. Has far has a controller this is the best mouse keyboard combo I found small portable controll type http://www.ipazzport.com/16A.html is a full keyboard plus it already has the android buttons on it. there is a tutorial here how to redirect the home button to call that way goes to launcher instead of the screen saver thing(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892359). Use nova luncher it wont work with trebuchet from CM9. I have a otg cable with usb hub currently with controller, ps3 controller(yes it works fine with usb cable to play deadtriger) 16gb usb with movies(use stick mount). I apreciate the effort of getting xbmc but I also think a full android rom is better
ohh I forgot use droidmote server is far better than tabletremote
Can't wait see what you come up with OP!

Is there a driver needing to installed for the ipazzport keyboard?
Also could you theoretically attach at 1 TB hard drive over usb OTG, with stick mount?
This of any use?

No I don't think you could do that since we don't have a custom kernel, usb mount is built in in android, maybe if you format it fat 32 it could work, good luck. I tried https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.mounter&hl=en but it won't work.
For keyboard you don't need drivers android reads those input by default even with put root.
fiveipads,
If you are still active on this, I suggest we pool resources. If the deal goes through, I'll also have a Gnex to help aid in development in about a week.
OR
Please , please , pretty please still be deving on the Q. It's lonely in Q land and its driving me crazy. :silly:

Hi Zulu, I think I saw someone get a bit of hate for this suggestion with your Nexus Player LolliRock ROM but is it possible to install the Leanback Launcher onto this full Android ROM and emulate most of the Android TV experience? My reason would be that I want the freedom of the full Play Store app and settings but I do like the Android TV interface for use from my couch.
Also, presumably this requires an unlocked bootloader but not root because I've been struggling to root my 16 GB model.
Thanks for your work.

Sure that you can. The leanback launcher is a stupid launcher like others but just a little more stupid because not support mouse. But you can start Android TV apps also without leanback launcher. http://www.apkmirror.com/?s=leanback+launcher&post_type=apps_post
You can start the leanback launcher also like an app if you create a shortcut like in this video https://youtu.be/NMqz8e33oq8 So when you install Android TV apps, you can have all in one bad place that is the leanback launcher. Without create a shortcut for every Android TV app. ( 10 in total )
I prferer Googl Now Launcher.
People not understand that you need just more accessibility on apps and this depend from developers.
You can control an app with a mouse, dpad or controller if a developer want this.
After that you can use Android, Android TV or also Android NOOB.
One thing is sure, Android TV is limited on purpose and you can't have all apps from Google Play.
The 320 dpi in build.prop is not compatible with many beautiful apps also if you sideload.
Every standard app is better and faster than the leanback version. Try standard youtube and leanback youtube to understand.
For me the life is too short to waste time with directional keys. I never used a classic Smart TV for this reason and all my TV are Smart TV.
For this reason i like full Android.
You think that if Android TV was better than Android I lose most of my free time to build these firmware ? I'm not so stupid.
But do not worry i appreciate and respect the requests of all
To have Youtube at 1080p and up read this post
https://plus.google.com/+VideomapIt/posts/QiC1Pksvzaq
I suggest to read also the comments. to understand really what i think.
I am very tired of the forced closures made to defend the economic interests of a few.
Many of these closures are also passed off as security but are just violations of the rules for fair competition between companies.
I hope I am not overlooking something due to lack of sleep, but am I correct in saying the nvidia game controller that came with the box doesn't work in this rom? My box isn't recognizing the controller after flashing rom, gapps, and su
After reading a little closer I see it can be made to work if connected via usb, but I much rather have it work wireless since I use the box connected to a network cable and wireless network connection doesn't pose any interference for me. Is there a way to restore the wireless controller connection?

For the controller in wireless mode: ( wired works well )
Request it to Nvidia sayng:
Please Nvidia if you sell an hardware controller, why you not publish the drivers for Android, Windows and Linux like all other companies that sell an hardware controller ? Or explain how to add it in a custom firmware ? You publish also the source code, why not publish it as closed binaries like others parts proprietary ?
In the second post you can find an alternative to use the controller in wireless mode.
It work better than native wireless mode, everyone can compare also in Nvidia Grid. ( Grid is beautiful also with my bad adsl )
And don't forget that you can use also any other standard controller ( also a 5$ chinese controller ), because the voice search capability and audio routing is possible in this firmware in many ways. The smarter way to make voice search in google now ( the full google now ) is with a webcam attached or with a bluetooth headsets. It's smarter because you can do this without nothing in your hands. Just sayng: " OK Google " + videochats in hangout and more...
Unfortunally i can't solve this for now. The only one thing that not work, but not for my incompetence.
I don't want use bad words to explain better why this behaviour. But smart people can understand.
Has anyone tried this on a shield tablet? I would assume you ca get a close experience. Also are the Nvidia apps bundled in the rom(controller, grid, game stream)

I like this ROM, but I have come across a few things that might make me go back to stock. The problem with wireless game controller not working unless tethered to the device (Not zulu99's fault), and Doom 3 will no longer run. You start it and it immediately just goes back to the home screen without any error to reference. I downloaded the stock image and am still debating as to whether I want to go back to stock or not.. I didn't say it before and I should have, but thanks for all the time and effort you have invested in this ROM.

This firmware is for Shield Console, not for Shield Tablet.
Shield hub that have also grid inside can be downloaded directly from goole play.
for game stream i can work on the nvidia proprietary apk, but i tested Screen Stream Mirroring app and it work.
You can also record your gameplay with any app for screen recording so this is not a problem.

Forgive my confusion but isn't the point of this rom to mimic the shield console on other android devices? I have the tablet and want to add the android TV experience to it and immersive mode. Wouldn't flashing this Tom accomplish that?

No i ported full Android to Shield Console, because on Android TV you are in a walled garden and you can't have all apps from google play
In Android Tv you have also by default density to 320 dpi that is not good for standard apps.
If you like immersive mode you can simply use xposed framework.
Thanks for the clarification. With that said how can I get the android TV experience with Google now search on my tablet? Is it possible?

Android based TV Box?

Long story short...
I setup a freenas tower and originally I had been running lots of server type application on linux VM's on my windows machine. Now I use jails to accomplish everything and I no longer need to run that computer 24/7. That computer was also solely connected to my TV which I no longer need or want to leave running 24/7.
I am currently running an Amazon Fire TV Stick and I really like it but it does not quite do everything that I want! And I was curious if you guys had any suggestions.
Plex App (Should be avaialable on all devices)
Typical movie/tv apps; HBO Go, Netflix, Hulu, etc (Also should be available on everything)
Amazon Prime Instant Video App ( really want this to be an app, and not loaded via the web)
A chrome browser (This would really help replace my desktop)
Wireless keyboard and mouse support
OpenVPN would be nice, but I do not think this is available without sideloading... which is possible
Currently looking at the new Amazon Fire TV and sideloading the Chrome browser. The Fire TV Stick does a decent job, but after its been on for a while it can get studder-y and choppy with HD video. So I was looking into an upgrade but havent trouble finding these specifics out. I would love you all's input!

[MiBox 3] Need Help Installing TV Apps

Hi all, just got the MiBox3 to replace my FireStick and I'm totally surprised as just how limited it is given that it's android....at least it seems limited to me, now I know that Android TV is pretty new and still finding it's way to some degrees but still I can't help feeling that buying a cheepo android box thats just running normal android with a remote friendly front end wouldn't have been a better use of the money.
Anyway, my issue is this, I want to install catch-up tv providers here in the UK, such as ITV Hub, iPlayer, 4oD, 5 On Demand and UKTVPlay.....but even after trying for the last 8hrs I still can't find a way to do it on this box, the Play Store as virtually nothing, side loading them results in them either crashing or heavily relying on a mouse and as much as I love Aptoide for most problems like this it's been no help either.
Since Fire TV (which is basically Android) has all of these apps and they all work in a TV environment with the use of remote rather then mouse, etc, I would have hoped that there would be a way to "port" the apps from the FireStick to the MiBox.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
