Install Remix OS on HDD Partition larger than 8GB? - Remix OS for PC

Can the official 8GB cap on hard drive installs be circumvented? Only 2GB out of the box is free and with Google apps installed I am left with a mere 400MB, barely enough for a functional system. Even a 16GB install size would be preferable, as I most use Remix on the go as a chrome books style lite OS.

Steps from 4 to 6, may help, if not replay on the same page I will give you another method.
If help click thanks

Search for RMXTools here. There is a post with details. I expanded my 8G to around 32G after setting a bunch of stuff up and didn't lose anything. Make a copy before messing with your data.img. I ran the main app from RMXTools, did a check first and it found some journal issue. I ran check with fix and it fixed it. Then I set the new size I wanted and expanded. After it finished I booted back over to Remix and had plenty of free space.

If you are still looking for answer.....

You can refer to my thread. I was able to get Remix installed to HDD without any size limit. No need for any tools.

Stable android rom?

I´m trying to make up my mind about getting this or not. I have some doubts:
1 - Is there a stable available rom that will let me experience the full android experience instead of the default "cropped" version that comes with it?
2 - With this rom will I be able to use the Nooks' internal 16gb as well as the micro sd card I plan to use?
3 - My main use for it is reading but when I travel I would very much like to copy a bunch of movies into a 32gb micro sd card to watch. Is this possible?
cm7 is nice but so are any of the other roms such as the MIUI ones
cm7 is more widely used so there is obviously going to be much more support.
Get the B&N app from the market or get the kindle one XD
Cm7 was simple to use
I thought I would add,
1 - cm7, the method of booting from sd card to run it, was very easy for me to get working when my nt decided it would spontaneously go into factory reset mode and fail to complete. Ran great, just have to figure out how to partition sd card to allow for a bit more storage available. I, however, have not tried internal method.
Just adding my meager experience, too much of a newb to offer any more info hope it helps more than stinkies the thread

1.) CM7 is certainly the most stable. You just need to decide if you want to run it internally or from a microSD card.
2.) You will have to either take your NT into Barnes and Noble and have them repartition halfway for you OR you could do the repartitioning yourself and get all the internal storage availabe for you to use.
3.) As long as the movies are in some kind of normal format, you should be fine.

If you need to allocate the rest of the space of your SD card, use either MiniTool Partition Wizard or EASEUS Partition Master to extend the 4th partition of the SD card. Let us know if you get stuck.
Cm7 is stable thigh patiently waiting for Cm9 to settle. netflicks works fine in 7 and Mv player is great for watching movies.

Thanks guys.
One more doubt. If I root it can I install any app from the google play store? Other then reading books I just want to be able to install mozilla, gmail and moboplayer. Do I really need to install a different rom to be able to do this? Frankly, I would prefer to simply be able to install these apps (maybe a different launcher, but this is not a must like the 3 apps I´ve mentioned).
All of those apps should show up in the play store just fine. For some apps you may need to modify the build.prop file for them to show up in the play store or sideload the apks.
Sideloading is possible I believe in the later versions of the B&N OS, but it can be a pain. Sideloading in 1.4.0 though is as simple as getting the apk for an app and installing it (much as you would on windows with a .exe file).
You mean I can install these 3 apps on the Nook straight from the google play store?? Isn´t the Nook Tablet full of restraints like the Kindle that won´t allow you to download apps from the google play store?
Nope
No, I there are no restrictions except for game loft games. They require the device name to be compatible and on their list. But you can easily go around that.
Other than that, it is a normal tablet

From what I remember, with update 1.4.1 and up you cannot sideload apps (i.e. install from anywhere but B&N app store).
There are ways around it but they are tedious. Best bet if you want stock is to revert to 1.4.0.

[Q] Which post instructions best to make n2a build equivalent?

Hi, in the Nook Development forums, I found this post from Albert Wentz: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439630
But unless I'm confused, I believe there are many other posts with other roll-your-own instructions? Such as: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583
All I want to do is build the SD card for my kid's nooks (versus paying $20 to N2A) so I can boot to it to run Android just like the N2A card. Does anyone know which post N2A may have followed to build their version? Or is Al's post the most modern build? Or the 2nd URL I list?
I'm quite technical so know I can do this, I just need to know which is the latest and greatest, or if there are many diff build customizations, which, let's say, is the most popular ? I mainly care that it has Google Play and Amazon App stores, and that I can sideload ebooks, mp3's,videos. If it comes with other apps, fine, but I'm fine with downloading, installing any I wish afterwards.
And.....some posts mention you don't have to modify your nook at all, just boot to the SD card, but others say it modifies the Nook (roots it), so that if you ever had to return it you'd have to restore it (hence best to back it up beforehand). Which is correct???
Al's method works fine. Anything you mentioned that you wish to try will work. I ran boot to SD android rom for several months before I took the plunge and rooted my 8gb Nook to a full android tablet.
It in no way modifies the internal workings of your Nook. The Nook allows booting to the card by design. Just use a Sandisk card of 8gb or more for best results and all you need is a class 4 speed rating. Believe it or not, a class 10 doesn't work as well.
YMMV
Good luck and have fun with it!

OK thanks, so if I understand you, rooting is a separate method, as in my 2nd URL referenced. (and in reading that, the SD card is only used to flash (or pull) the image from, to put onto your Nook.) I don't know about backup, but I don't think I want to mess with the stock OS for now. Maybe if B&N abandons it. I guess I don't see it as a big deal that my kids will need to reboot each time to toggle between nook OS and Android.
I read that about the Class4 vs 10. I think I even read posts about class 10's not only running slow, but acting really buggy? Is that right?... One of our SD cards is a 16GB class 4 and a 8GB class 6. Anyone heard if class 6's have any issues?

Ooops!
I just realized both URLs I posted (even 1st one from Albert) mention rooting.(altering tablet) My mistake. Ok, so where's the mainstream single post on XDA forums that describes the most popular non-root (boot to SD) process? I'd rather follow a post off XDA website. And if I have issues, maybe fallback to that URL you gave me, although his English is not so great, so afraid I might get lost in his partitioning instructions. I also don't have a Linux box at home (re: his mention of EXT4) although I have been trained on/worked with Linux some. Although running Jellybean since it's the latest & greatest sounds nice....although I've read enough articles from mainstream tech sites that state it's a bit too buggy? I'm sure ICS is plenty good enough and all apps support it.
Whats the difference between CWM (clockwork mod) and CM (cyanogen)? Wikipedia just says "The CyanogenMod source code repository also contains the ClockworkMod Recovery"

The step by step you'll find somewhere here on XDA actually is the work of the guy I posted to. So my link is the source. That "Iamafanof" blogger is the person "Succulent" you'll see referred to here at XDA. Entirely up to you of course, but I don't see why you wouldn't at least check it out.
Edit:
You do not need a Linux system and I don't know what gave you the idea you would. The process is extremely simple: Download a rather large file, burn it to an sd-card, expand one partition (optional but recommended).

I thought that because as far as I'm aware, the EXT4 that he mentions (for P3 Data1) is a linux type partition. (unless some Windows partitioning tool can create it I'm not aware of) I'm willing to try his steps. So I guess you'd recreate the "P3 FAT32 SDCARD" partition the same size as it was before then? And the P4 (EXT4) you'd resize, as you mention, to take advantage of all the rest of the space on your 8 or 16GB card. But what free tool under Windows can create EXT4 ?

You do not have to create any EXT4 partition. Nor any other other kind of partition. All you have to do is expand the FAT32 partition. MiniTool is free and will do that for you.
http://download.cnet.com/MiniTool-Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html
Edit: And, FWIW, I went and checked. Mini Tool can also create EXT4 partitions, should you want to.
I got that image onto the SDcard, it now has 4 partitions:
BOOT 249MB (FAT32)
350MB (EXT3) 91% used
600MB (EXT3) 3% used
SDCARD 713MB (FAT32)
13GB Unallocated
So I would right click partition "SDCARD", extend it to the 13GB.
But, in his post he mentions one partition (P3,DATA1, which MiniTool doesn't show any partition labeled as such, but I assume he's just talking about the 3rd partition (the 600MB Ext3 partition) being used to store just apps & app data. (I assume since it's EXT3 which is compat w/linux i.e. Android) If so, what do you think..is 600MB enough for downloading/installing lots of apps? Or is it wiser to extend it to maybe 2 or 4 or even GB? For example I have the Humble Bundle games for Android Tablet. The installs (APK) are huge...anywhere from 30-200MB themselves..... I assume their post-install size takes up a different amount of space (more) than the APK itself, just as with Windows EXE installers? And if I recall correctly I believe once installed, you can del the APK... Anyhow, I'm emailing the company to see what install reqs for disk space are, since all they list the APK size.
Only you know how large data partition you need but it sure looks like you need it larger than 600.
So, to add some sort of instructions:
Delete partitions 3 and 4 (the 600 and 713 MB ones)
Apply changes (top left)
Create a new partition 3. Make it EXT4, Primary and the size you want
Apply changes
Create a new partition 4, FAT32, primary to pick up whatever is left unallocated
Apply changes
Don't forget to "apply changes"

Although all apps downloaded from Google Play will reside on /data partition, many apps keep their data separately in the internal user-media partition or on the external SDcard (the 4th /sdcard partition in your case). For example, I have a video game app which takes ~30MB for itself in /data but ~350MB for data storage on the SDcard. The Titanium Backup app works the same way. So you'll have to anticipate not just the app's storage size requirement but also its targeted partition for data storage.

[Q] [SOLVED] Not sure if tablet is 8GB or 16GB!

[SOLVED SOLVED SOLVED]
I found out, to sweet relief, that I have the 16GB model
When you restart the tablet, cyanoboot lists the specs at the top left corner.
You will notice that the 16GB model shows up as having 5.3GBs in the storage menu. This is false. What's really happened is that you have a 7.5GB partition with free space. If you wish to reclaim this space, you must repartition your nook (a risky process). If you want to use that space without risking bricking, you can simply copy over your files and documents to that partition easily using the file manager. Hope that helps.
=========================================================
(...previously...)
Hi everyone, I recently won a bid on Ebay and bought a Nook Tablet for $50, with free shipping.
I successfully flashed CM10 blah blah...and when I go into Settings > Device > Storage, it lists the following:
Total space: 5.50GB
Available 5.31GB
... blah blah ...
... blah blah ...
... blah blah ...
Internal storage
--------------------
Total space: 7.45GB
Now, it seems to me that this tablet is the 8GB model. The seller stated the item was 16GB...
(I backed up the stock ROM already, in case I needed to return the item should it not be as described).
I want to know what amount of space those of you running the 16GB model have in that menu.
Is there a way to confirm if my tablet really is the 16GB model or 8GB model? (Note: I didn't even bother to register on the official nook ROM from fear of updating it to a un-hackable ROM, so I don't know what model I have unless I reflash the stock ROM and register!) Is it possible that there could be unallocated space that CM isn't finding?
If it really is the 8GB model, I can contact the seller (who offers free return shipping) and get a replacement.
Please help!
I believe that's its the 8 if the system states that I believe its true.

Damn! I waited a week for this thing to come! Now I have to spend another week getting a replacement!
Alright, I'd like to hear from a person who has the 16GB model and see how much space s/he has before shipping this back...
Le sigh...
UPDATE! Question answered!!!
So, when I rebooted the tablet again, I saw cyanoboot say this model was the 1GB/16GB model at the top.
It is indeed the 16GB model!
I opened up the terminal app and also checked some things in the file manager...
Output of "df" (the marked stat I believe to be the unallocated space):
imgbin (dot) org/images/14562.png
(I can't post image links yet because I'm a noob)
Now, I forgot to post this earlier, but I see on the bottom that there is ANOTHER storage tab which states:
Internal storage (representation of the bar. Plus signs mean a gray strip):
|+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
|+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
Total space: 7.45GB
Available: 7.45GB
Furthermore, I opened up the file manager. After doing so, I am presented with the location "sdcard0" which contains folders such as B&N Downloads, LOST.dir, and My Files. These seem to be present from the previous stock Nook firmware. I seem to have not thoroughly reset/format the tablet...
Could someone tell me how I would go about reclaiming the space? If required, I can reflash it easily.
Great you the model figured it out! Easiest way to check (because many get confused with the storage numbers and don't realize there are more than one partition) is to look at the model number in faint lettering under the speaker (at the back). The 8GB is 250A and the 16GB is 250.
What space do you need to reclaime? The 7.45 is there for you to use freely. 5GB is for apps and approx 3GB is for OS. If you want to change partition sizes you need to repartition. seacrch for that and you shall find, but quite frankly, I think the current partitions are fine sinec you can always use sd card.
really, thats my question too, how to repartition the emmc? searched the forum but couldn't find a tutorial. it seems only way to do that is open up the tablet, take the emmc out and repartition it the hard way can you help me with a more suitable solution?

Putting "repartition nook tablet" into Google gave me (as no.3 on the list of results) a "how to video" that is an illustration of this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531120
But honestly, you'll just gain a couple of GB to the 8 you already have. You probably want to keep around 2-3 GB for the user data and that leaves 12-13GB for "media". You already have 8GB and the option to use an sd card. Is it worth the bother if you're not that into this stuff?

I agree with you. It is best to leave it alone. 5.3GBs is plentyyy of space for apps. I am actually only using 200MB of space for apps right now and I have Firefox and a FTP server app. Besides, I can use the 7.5GBs of space as a data partition, I can, for example, copy over my music and PDF files to that partition.
I also have a 16GB microsd card also in the nook tablet, so I am not in dire need of space anyways lol XD
I shall mark this thread solved

This proibably means yours hasn't been through the BN reparttition scheme. If you've got a BN store nearby they can repartition it for you to the 5 GB Data and 8GB Media or whatever it's called (where you store your own stuff). If you (like me) don't have the option to do that you can run the repart.img dexcribed in this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663836 yourself to get those partitions. Topic doesn't say it's for repartition, but the repart.img sure does that!
Edit: Or maybe I misunderstand you. Maybe you have a device that has been repartitioned "manually", giving you 11GB for your own storage? Cause I donät recognize the number 11. In that case you do NOT want to do any more repartitioning!!

Angry Birds Go

Hi
I am trying to load Angry Birds Go on to my sons Nook HD.
I started following instruction on Barnes and Noble site re sideloading apps. Was going fine until I tried recognising device from command prompt
android update adb
adb kill-server
adb start-server
adb devices
seemed to run fine but just didn't show any devices at the end. It is visible however in device manager on my pc therefore I wondered whether I could just carry on regardless? I know there are drivers on barnes and noble developer website, but I need to register to get these - and to register I need a US bank account and tax code - I'm in the UK....
My second problem is the instructions I was following were for .apk files and I've realised Angry Birds Go is an .obb file.
So, can anyone help me with installing the way I have started, or is there another way to get it on his tablet (and save a lot of tears!!)
My pc runs windows 8 (64bit)
Thanks

You can get the USB driver for adb from the first post in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994129
You also need the INI file with the one line in it (documented in the thread above as well as the B&N site). To install the driver in Win 8, you have to jump thru some hoops to be able to install an unsigned driver (documented on the B&N site).

Why not just use astro file manager or something similar and just drop the apk onto the internal storage? You can pull the apk from another device that's rooted. You're making the process harder than it is.
Thank you both for your answers, but now I am confused how best to achieve what I want. As you will no doubt be able to tell I am a novice with an interest in learning more. I have stayed away from rooting as everything I read says this isn't for novices! I am happy to do this though if I can back-up first which your thread points me to sherip. If I am pulling the .apk from another device it would be my galaxy s3 - though this is not rooted.
For the moment all I want to do is get the game onto my sons nook hd - I won't be messing about with any other changes or programs I don't need to make. (Once this is achieved I plan to buy a second hand tablet and start experimenting with it).
If anyone can tell me the simplest and least risky way to do this I would be most grateful.
Apologies if this seems so simple to everyone else

Yes - its says that it is not compatible with my device.
Had same message for my friends Nexus 7 but just downloaded from Amazon appstore after allowing downloads from unknown sources. There isn't a checkbox for doing this on the nook.

OK, getting the Amazon app store installed and installing apps from it is not hard at all, even for an unrooted stock Nook. See the first post in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613 and look for the parts about making a CWM disk and enabling unknown sources. You will need a micro SD card that can be used to boot the Nook. The ones that work best are Sandisk class 4. Once you have unknown sources enabled you can remove the card and reboot the Nook. After that just download the apk for the Amazon app store and install it. Might want to install ES File Explorer from Google Play, you could use it to browse to the Amazon apk and easily click to install it.

Have created the CWM disk and have my nook booting to it - however I tried backing up before doing anything else but just get the message 'Can't mount backup path'. I have tried to find a solution hence not been back on here for a couple of days - but have failed miserably. Please could you help again.
Thanks

Not sure about the message, but I can say that backups are stored on the SD card so there must be enough room for it. The card itself probably needs to be 4gb or larger and depending on how you made the CWM card you might need to adjust the size of the 1st partition of the card with partition managing software on the PC. That would only apply if you burned an image to make the card. Would need a lot more info on exactly what you've done if that doesn't help.

It's a 16gb card so should be enough space. (in fact have tried two different 16gb cards and get same message for both).
I followed 'new procedure' instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613 to make CWM card without burning image - it also specifically says not to create partition on disk.
I guess I need to go back and try the old way...

Did you use the files from NookHD-bootable-CWM-6027-for-emmc-stock-BOOTFILES-r3-(02.13.13).rar?
16gb is pretty big if you will keep the card for this purpose. If you do the old way of burning an image, you will as I said before need to resize the partition to have access to all the space.
I did locate one message in the other thread with your error message in CWM and he was also using a large card (32gb). It worked for him when he used the 4gb image file. Obviously a lot space lost. I've previously burned the 4gb image to an 8gb card and resized the partition. I never saw your error.

If you are just wanting to flash the Enable Unknown Sources zip, you do not need to back up first. The zip just modifies a hidden setting and does not really modify stock.

Seems the card size was the problem. I created a partition, and as an 8gb card everything worked as it should.
Got Amazon app downloaded, however Angry Birds Go still wouldn't download! Going to go back to the sideloading option and try that.
Thank you for you help though - all part of my learning curve

FYI I was able to install Angry Birds Go via Amazon on my HD+ in my CM 11 environment. The app is exceptionally large (over 100 MB) and no doubt needs lots of memory. After a few initial crashes it seems to be running OK, tho my skill in the game is very poor. I use verygreen's unofficial CM 11 release booting from a 16gb SD card. Unfortunately I don't see a similar setup available for the HD. There is however a setup to replace the Nook OS with CM 11 on the internal storage EMMC area of the HD. See the first post in verygreen CM 11 thread in the Android Development section if interested.

Great, glad you got it. I noticed the app's data was soon up past 400 mb in addition to the 100+ mb program space. So I've uninstalled it.

Rooting in itself is fairly novice-friendly, there are many wonderful guides in the development forum. Using root access to make changes is where you can run into trouble if you aren't careful. You CAN brick a device, but pulling/installing .apk files isn't likely to do so.
The simplest way to do what you want would be to Google search for the .apk you want, download it, and use a root-capable file manager. (Lots of them available in the PlayStore) to move it to the internal storage as per c0ldburn3r's post above.
Good luck and happy learning!

Please tell me the way to move this game to SD card everybody !

[Q] Vonino Onyx QS 7 root

Hi guys, so I've got this tablet for free with my new contract and I want to root it to play a bit with it . Do you guys have any idea how to do it ? I haven't managed to find any tutorials on the web .
Vonino Onyx QS root request
+1 on this issue.
I too have a Vonino Onyx QS tablet running on Android 4.4.2. The device is decent enough, but storage management is awful! Despite being advertised as an 8 GB tablet in terms of storage, the Onyx QS runs aground at about 900 MB of installed apps (including related data and cache) and starts yelling that there is "Insufficient storage available". This renders the tablet virtually unusable after installing just a few essential apps. Emails stop working, apps will no longer update and data-intensive apps such as Google Earth will simply refuse to run. The 32 GB external SD card I've added makes no difference. It's almost like the OS has no clue what to do with it.
I suck at Android. However, after a lot of digging for pieces of information I've come to undersand that these devices use separate partitions for the apps and other files. Some folks have also hinted towards the fact that the puny 0.9 GB app partition can be resized on a rooted device by means of a partition management app. Or apps could at least be moved to the SD card right before their installation (making use of an app such as Link2SD and, again, a rooted device).
This bring us full circle back to the OP's request: could someone please create and explain a rooting method for this tablet?
Just so you know, these are fresh screenshots of this fresh factory reset configuration. Thought it would fix the problem, but it didn't.

try with Kingo ROOT. You do it at you'r own risk.

Hi, Paget96! Thank you so much for the solution!
I'm writing this to let you, the OP and everybody else know that Kingo Root did it! I have succesfully rooted the tablet and the process itself was quick and merely a matter of installing the software on my PC, connecting the tablet via USB and clicking my way through.
Afterwards I installed Link2SD Plus to manage the transfer of apps from internal storage to the external SD card (32 GB in my case). The app is dirt cheap and truly what you need, because the free version does not allow you to move app data, only the app itself and its libraries. As I've come to know, data and cache build-up is what ends up killing storage space.
Before installing Link2SD however, one must prepare the SD card by means of a partitioning program. Highly recommend you do this via card reader on an actual PC. Use MiniTool Partition Wizard, it seems to be very popular these days. Delete whatever's already on the card and make two PRIMARY partitions: the first one will be FAT32 and will store the media you consume (like music, photos, videos etc.), while the second partition has to be ext4 (ext2 did not work for me on this tablet) and will hold the apps and their data. You can go ahead and name them "Media" and "Apps" respectively to avoid confusion. Remember: both must be primary partitions, the first one is FAT32 for media, the second is ext4 for apps. I made my app partition 10 GB big. Overkill, you say? Hey, I'm done with insufficient storage space errors, ok? :silly:
While you're at it, you might want to add a third partition for swap space to add more RAM to your device. There are tutorials for it on the web.
Once you're done formatting the card, reinstall it in the tablet, open up Link2SD and choose ext4 at the script mounting prompt. From there on, moving apps from internal to SD card space should be intuitive.
Prior to all this fiddling I suggest you perform a factory reset on your device so you can start clean. Can't tell you anythihg about custom ROMs or stuff like that because I didn't have a need for them. This thing works fine apart from that silly storage limitation.
Phew! I can finally enjoy using my tablet... :fingers-crossed:
