Multitasking/RAM - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Real Life Review

You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Should give 5-stars, but ram management is still f*ckd. Considering that my old N3 with 1gb less ram could hold more apps in ram than my new shiny S7E

Even light apps can't keep in background.

So if I installed a different ROM, would the RAM issue still there?

No. You need root and a few lines in the build prop to fix it

Cmon guys its samsung we are talking about, they will probably fix it in future updates.

Maybe, but it's still worse than an aging nexus 5 which is sad considering the difference in hardware.

i think it's at a nice balance right now. it suspends RAM much less aggressive than S6, and not as lax some older custom phones where it can start saving battery by not need to retain apps in RAM...

I don't think it saved battery life, the S6 didn't has the best battery life for killing apps... And reload apps make it consumes more power.

Yes so ?? it had amoled screen, exynos proc...

5 easy.. 18 apps is my record waaaay more than I need!

I have 18 apps in memory, 4 of which are chrome tabs and none are games. I was just looking up verizons customer service number in the Google app. I switched to the dialer and typed in as much as I could remember. Then I switched back to the Google app, and it lost my search results. Typed in verizon customer service again and got the rest of the number. Switched back to the dialer and it cleared the numbers I've typed in. Pathetic. I was getting the customer service number because my unit was scratched out of the box and wanted to exchange it, now I think I'll just return it. My MXPE, which costs half of what this phone does, never had this issue.
Edit: chrome also stutters but I think this might be due to all the ads running. I've always used Ada way before.

SD820, on verizon.
Also now with 21 apps, everytime I try switching to a chrome tab it refreshes the page.

With exynos i never had this issue like you.
I can open easly 10-15 apps and when i switch to copy a number, I tried because of your story, I never had to reload anything, first try I could read multiple times the number and switch to another app an back.
This could be a SD820 issue and not a S7e overall problem.

[Q] Touchwiz redraw and phone getting hot

Touchwiz getting a lot redraws on my S6 edge, am I the only one facing this problem? I know switching to a third party launcher may help but I don't feel like taking that approach since touhwiz on s6 looks really great. Also the phone is getting hot while charging very frequently, especially on the edge side. Tried cleaning cache in recovery but it doesn't helps. Is there any way to solve this issue?
The only way if it's still possible go get an exchange unit

Yea saw it earlier but I don't think that is the problem since multitasking works really well on my device (while playing some graphic intensive games, I can switch to a lot different apps like facebook, chrome and stuffs without killing my games in the background). The only problem is the touchwiz which redraws too frequently, even when I leave the phone without touching it

That's the thing though. I got the patch that is supposed to fix the memory issue but I'm still getting redraws and my friend got his s6 last week and he gets none. I think there might be an issue with my device. Seeing as a got it on the first day.

Ive contacted samsung and here is the mail that i got from them
This is to acknowledge receipt of your email regarding your Galaxy S6 Edge (SM-G925F). I understand that it is too hot to your touch and it will be my pleasure to provide you the necessary information to your inquiry.
As Galaxy S6 has slim design (142.1 x 70.1 x 7 mm) and use high performance CPU of Dual Quad Core (1.5 GHz Quad Core + 2.1 GHz Quad Core Processor), you may feel your device is hot to the touch in using. This is actually normal and should not affect the lifespan or performance of your device. And while charging, the device may also heat up.
Using the device under the environment that ambient temperature is high, you may feel the device gets hotter than usual because your device work in the thermal equilibrium status with an ambient temperature. It is commonly seen not just on Samsung devices, but many other manufacturers devices when the device is used, and it is a general phenomenon of all electronic devices.

[SATIRE] Top 5 Reasons NOT to buy the Galaxy A5 2016

Reason NO 5.
I've tested the new a5 and gotta say...I was disappointed. It's more bloated than its older version. Yes more Bloated. Samsung has put nearly double the bloatware in the new a5. So the older is the better option if you don't want a bloated phone out of the box!
Reason No.4
I drop tested the new A5 and it broke at less than 3 feet. The older A5 can survive above 5 feet. The newer one is weaker due to its extra glass back and heavier additions which adds more force on impact.
Reason No. 3
Price. The newer is 25-30% more expensive than the older one. For that price you get a more bloated and weaker phone.
Reason No. 2
No Premium Metal Finish. There is NO premium metal finish. It is under the glass of the new a5. There is absolutely no point having it under glass. It's useless and I think a glass back is kinda outdated.
Reason No. 1
The System Memory. If you take the 16GB option of the A5 its system takes 10.34 GB
Along with Cached Data you will only have 3-4 GB to use on the phone. That's Bad.
Hope you like this thread and if you are planning to buy an a5 then buy the older please. Thank-you. BTW I have a ROM for download. I will create a thread for it later
Glad I got the 2015 model haha,
I don't know what bloated things you're talking about, mine has no bloat..and a5 2016 is more expensive than the original a5 cz it has a bigger screen bigger battery better cpu fast charging finger print the placement of the speaker is better.
actually if you think about it its a smaller note 5 with no pen heart beat sensor and wireless charging.
so with respect to your opinion,I think you're being too harsh on the new a5 2016

Reason no 6: Mali t720mp2 gpu (Exynos variant). I mean seriously. That gpu is age old. It deserves at least t760mp2 or mp4.

If you want pure android go for an Nexus device
And it is not much bloatware as you are saying
For example I had an vodafone sony z2
Well it was full of some vodafone useless apps
And my A5 is not from any carrier so it has not
all the useless apps
I think it has just what you need not more of that
Some google apps
Ok some samsung apps
But you need to admit Samsung always tried to have
their own system
Since Bada and tried with Tizen
And now what they are doing is just having their own
Samsung apps aplication and thats not much of bloatware
But everybody got their own taste
So if you dont like it
Nothing to say
Get what you like
Go for Nexus devices

What I noticed till now is that my ram memory is always at 80-85% usage
I close all task and from the app manager close all background proceses but
after 2-3 minutes it comes back again to 80-85% usage...wich is for me not ok...
I think it could be some backproces like the app wich counts my steps all the time...
Will see how it will be after disableing all of it....
Thanks anyway for your share

I set in the developer options animation x0.5 and it gets a bit faster
The battery is very good...can last for few days if the phone is not used a lot
But if you use it as a power user and do lot of browsing or video the battery need
9 hours to get empty...so this is very good...anyway it can last with now worries for
one hole day...but as said...if you use the phone less it lasts for days....
The build quality is very good also..has the goood premium feel in the hand
I recomand to buy this phone for sure no mistake to buy it

Samsung did it again! Crappie Note 7 memory (RAM) management!

I almost posted this to the discussion thread, but I truly think this deserves an exclusive topic!
Yes, guys, Samsung did it again. Just like Note 5, we now have a crappie RAM management that simply reloads every app and websites again after alternating recent apps/games. Just take a look at this first speed test side by side comparison to the iPhone 6S, made by this YouTube channel. Extremely disappointing! This is absolutely unacceptable for a so expensive device like this! Even worse, but being able to correct manage 4 GB of RAM is ridiculous!
I already ordered a Spigen Wallet S cover and I'm just waiting for Brazilian pre-order to start, but now I need to confess that I'm a bit desperate due to this performance, mainly because this simply doesn't occur when using my Galaxy Note 3!
Anyway, here it goes:
Edit: Another video added! Now against OP3.

Yeah, as soon as I saw this video, I considered canceling my order. I'm holding out hope that the Snapdragon model doesn't have this issue, but if it does, I'll simply return it. I don't care how much of a fanboy you are, there is simply NO EXCUSE for this on a $900 flagship device with 4gb of RAM.
I understand some frustration, but so people really treat their phones this way in real life? How much app switching do you do? 1 second versus 0.8 seconds really isn't a big deal for most people. Canceling an order over this seems a bit... Hasty.

I truly don't bother about milliseconds delay when opening apps or even seconds more to open games (nowadays it's even pretty rare to me playing games, to be honest), as we saw in the video. The real deal is this frustrating, disappointing and, mainly, irritating "reload everything issue" that was so much discussed when Note 5 was released and recently was so criticized also about the latest 1+ device.
We expect low end devices to throw a cold water bucket on our heads while reloading everything we pick under recent apps, but this is unacceptable for the most expensive phone in the world! This is so basic.
And this is not something about not being real life. This is something about the same issue that Note 5 (don't know if S7 also) faced. You don't need to open multiple games. Just alternate between some light apps and this will be sufficient to TouchWiz kill them at background.
Also, this is ridiculous for a phone that claims itself to be a multitasking monster and it's even able to open multiple apps at once at the same time, splitting screen and/or through those bubbles S Pen feature.
For example, I'm writing all of this using my Note 3 and already alterned between weather app, Google app, Inbox and even Google Translator to help me writing this. Just imagine now if I was using Note 7 and this f* Samsung TouchWiz killing background apps thing just reloaded all my 4 Chrome tabs when I returned to it! I would have lost EVERYTHING I typed!
This is not something we can deal of we can handle/accept. No way!

So, you're telling me you're okay with paying $900 for a device that has 4gb of RAM yet can't even keep two apps running in the background with said RAM? Because that's sad. I feel like people who downplay this have no idea how a smartphone is supposed to work. If you need an example, see the Galaxy S7 an S7 Edge, both made by Samsung, both of which handle RAM management very well. There is literally no excuse for Samsung to set the app cache settings so low on this phone.
People try to defend them by saying "battery life", but that just speaks to a severe ignorance in how RAM is utilized. Sure, if you have a badly coded app running in the background, it will take some extra battery, but for the most part, it takes MORE battery to reload the apps over and over because that's taxing the processor. It's also inexcusable on a device that is supposed to be a multitasking powerhouse for power users.
Hasty? Practical. I fell for Samsung's crap last year with the Note 5 and didn't return it in time. It took them months and an entire new version of Android to rectify the bad RAM management in that device and mine sat in a drawer because I couldn't stand to use it in its crippled state. I'm not going through that again. Not when there are devices for half the price that actually perform like they should.
I have the note 5 and my background apps rarely reload when I switch back and forth.

I can't believe this video has been posted in three different threads in this and the T-Mobile Note7 forum. Comparing any Android phone to an iPhone is like comparing a diesel car to a gasoline powered one. The two OS's are totally different in their approach to performance. The iPhone 6 with 1GB of RAM out benchmarked Android and the 6s only has 2MB of RAM. There are threads here where people are up in arms the Note7 only has 4GB.
As for memory management there's a balance between keeping multiple apps alive in the background for convenience and keeping too many open which impacts battery life. This is what caused all the recent drama with the OnePlus 3 and its 6GB of RAM keeping fewer apps open than the S7-series. Here's a quote from the OnePlus founder.
After a comparison video earlier this week showed us that the OnePlus 3’s 6GB of RAM might not give it the insane multitasking capabilities we all hoped, OnePlus CEO Carl Pei has responded with a few clarifications surrounding RAM management on the OnePlus 3. On paper, 6GB of RAM would lead most users to believe that they could easily have several apps open at a time without anything reloading, however upon getting devices, many users have found that the phone can only hold 3 or 4 apps in memory before removing them. Why is that the case? Pei [the OnePlus founder] quite simply responded by saying that OnePlus has a “different strategy for RAM management that benefits battery”. While battery is definitely a valid concern with the OnePlus 3 considering the smaller 3,000 mAh capacity, it’s definitely a bit disappointing to see performance given up in exchange. That said however, there is a way to get around this. Carl Pei explained in another tweet that the RAM management can be adjusted in third-party ROMs. So with other ROMs that should be released pretty soon, developers could easily change the RAM management to a far less aggressive setting. A potential fix using the first party ROM is currently floating around on XDA, but Pei reminds us that RAM management is handled by more than just the build.prop, so don’t put too much faith in that “fix”.

Samsung took huge flack on the S6 because it only kept 3-4 background apps alive. It improved on the Note5 to 5-7 which is what I've experienced over the past year. I'd expect similar performance in the Note7. With all the unique strengths and features the Note7 has if the number of background apps open is a top priority maybe folks should reconsider their purchase decision.

What's wrong with doing that ? If you see that the gasoline powered one is much faster, that might then be a reason to buy that one. Even more so if it's cheaper (like the iphone is nowadays).

Ram usage itself has absolutely nothing to do with battery usage. Unused ram cells don't consume less battery. What this guy is saying though is that background processes can use CPU cycles: when accumulated CPU cycles cause the CPU to boost its speed, then it will have an impact on battery life. But that's more due to badly written apps, why would a game that the user is not playing want to stress the CPU ? It's like facebook, that's a perfect example of a horrible written app. Regardless off how many apps you are running, that app will drain battery due to doing tons of stuff in the background and keeping your phone awake. So it's not a matter of how many apps you are running simultaneously, it's a matter of which apps you are running.
Entitlement runs amok. Nobody has a gun to your head and is forcing you to buy it. The other 99% of people who would buy this phone won't care.

Man it's just frustration. We all want to buy this phone because it looks so sleak, has this nice catchy iris scanner etc. But then again, it means you'll have to deal with Touchwiz and all of its problems and Samsung's horrible update policy again. The alternative is buying the HTC Nexus next month but that device doesn't nearly look as cool, let alone have new features like an iris scanner. If Samsung would make the Nexus, now that would be a device to look forward to

You can't have it both ways nor can you expect Samsung to listen to bunch of people on xda to devote time and resources to fix things. The limitations of Touchwiz can be 80% mitigated by spending $2 on Nova Prime if you truly hate it.
People need to seriously prioritize what they expect in the phone. Again, nobody is forcing you to buy the phone and if RAM managment or an unlocked bootloader is really that necessary, get a HTC, OnePlus, or the upcoming Nexus. I expect people who can afford a $850 phone to have other more important priorities in their purchasing decisions.

It was also compared to the Note 5 which had the same issue until it was eventually fixed. This information was available in the OP had you read instead of skimmed.
And it doesn't matter what OS is running: Android, IOS, Mac, Windows, Linux, etc., no app should completely reload after it has already been started.

If you had read the post above yours, you would have noticed that the issue had been subsequently fixed in a later patch on the Note 5.
Come on, people: read, don't skim.

That's nonsense. A launcher itself wont change anything regarding the deeper/core android processes like the ram management.

I dont know. What I do know is that a lot of Iphone users buy the phone, partly, because they love the smoothness of the interface. In fact I recently spoke to a friend of mine who is a really smart university grad in IT, I found out he was on Iphone which surprised me a bit. When I asked him why he said he couldnt stand Android's interface. I said "You mean Touchwiz". He said "what" ? Lol. What I'm saying is, most people dont even know what Touchwiz is, but they do see that a Samsung phone is just not running as smooth as an iphone and I'm 100% confident that that DOES cause people to buy an iphone over a Galaxy.

If you're paying for the most expensive device available, you will want to do with it whatever you want (unlocked bootloader, ROM it, etc.). It should operate near-flawlessly. Or quickly be patched to. You should demand the absolute best.
Telling people to just accept whatever they get when spending that much money for a device is just unacceptable. Like the old adage goes:
"You get what you pay for."
There's a reason why there are cheaper vehicles, boats, homes, etc. The cheaper they are, the less you're going to get out of them.
Multi-tasking is non-existent when apps reload after they've already been loaded. This is a deal-breaker. I won't be purchasing this device now until it's been fixed. There's zero excuses for a the most expensive flagship device available to have such a glaring and easily-fixable flaw.

I was responding directly to the Touchwiz comment and it's limitations. The RAM management issues go beyond Touchwiz and is probably kernel related.
So who cares about why people by an Iphone vs. a Samsung? It's not like Samsung is losing sleep over the perceived crappy RAM management of their phones affecting sales. I still state that people who can afford a flagship Samsung phone vs. other android phones have other priorities than worrying about this stuff when making their purchase. Things like design, a S-pen, smaller form factors for a given screen size, wireless charging, etc. would be better justifications. Again, if you need the other stuff for dev work or "full" control, get another phone. Samsung won't change anything for people here on XDA so it's pointless having angst over this stuff.

Maybe for you but for the 99% of the people purchasing this phone who cares? People don't refuse to buy BMWs anymore because they took away the dipstick to check oil (which they have for close to the past 10 years). Don't think for a minute that you're important enough for Samsung to care that you won't buy the phone because of perceived flaws. I find it hilarious when people ***** about not having root or an unlocked bootloader on a phone and when they finally do get that they cry about not being able to use Samsung Pay. Duh...that's the reason why these phones are locked to begin with.

I think Samsung could have pushed Iphone out of the market by now if they had delivered phones that would beat the iphone in every aspect. Samsung's hardware is usually better but their software department is horrible and extremely slow in pushing out updates. The whole reason Iphone still exists is that Samsung is just not delivering what a lot of users want. In fact, if I didnt hate Itunes that much I'd probably kiss Android goodbye and buy an iphone (it works the other way around too, apple could have killed Samsung too, at least in the flagship department, if they listened a bit better to what people want, or did you actually meet someone who likes Itunes ?)

App launch speed

OMG! Kim K posted another selfie with tons of cleavage! Rate this thread to express how quickly apps launch on the Huawei Mate 9. A higher rating indicates that even the most intensive apps launch quickly and without hesitation, even if they are no longer in RAM.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I`ve owned the Mate 9 for over 2 weeks now and i can honestly say that in user experience this is the most reponsive phone ever. Apps, widgets, games it doesn`t matter, everything opens quick and snappy and operates without any lag. I`ve also had the Galaxy S7 Edge but the Mate 9 is much more resposive imo, has a lot less bloatware (wich can also be uninstalled) and after the latest update it is working even better.
As said opening apps , gaming and multi-tasking is a joy to use on this phone so far and it doesn`t slow down a bit.

Just press OK and the app (and others too) and it will dissapear from your applist and from the menu.
It's VERY fast at launching apps. I ran it side by side to an iPhone 7 plus and it consistently wins
Sent from my MHA-L29 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
More responsive phone I've had ever used. Even than an iPhone 7, s7 edge an op3.
Just picked up a 9, to replace my 8, which replaced my 2.
Guess you could say I'm kind of hooked on the Huawei phones like I was the HTC phones in the pre smartphone era.
Other than slow to get official updates, which really doesn't bother me, because the OS, for what I use it for has been
so dang blame stable, I don't really care.
I went from a Mate2, which I loved, to a Mate8, which I loved, to a Mate9, which is amazing.
I don't know how they keep increasing the response, and snappy feel, but they do.
LOL, I've still got the 2, and "in the day" it felt snappy, now it feels a bit slow.

Would you buy this phone again?

Now you've had the Mate 20 Pro for a while, taking into account the camera, battery and overall experience. Would you recommend this phone to friends and would you buy the phone again yourself?
At this point I haven't had any negative experience...I'm more frustrated with the decisions that Google made in Android Pie than anything related to the phone itself.
So yeah, I have recommended it to friends.
No. I really don't enjoy using EMUI.
I think it's an excellent phone but just the fact that I live in the USA where the M20P has no warranty or support makes it difficult to recommend. EMUI also will turn off certain people and the aggressive battery management is kind of a love it or hate it thing. I would buy this phone again but recommending it to a friend is another matter.
Not decided yet... Memory management is far too aggressive. The rest of EMUI I can live with at the moment. It's very hard to ignore the amazing battery, screen and camera. I came from a note 8 and it was a close run thing between the mate and the note. Time will tell!

I'm exactly in this boat. After my 3rd defective device I opted for a refund.
Today I looked at the Google pixel 3xl and the 1+6T the oxygen os is great far nicer than EMUI. But for some reason I kept getting drawn back to the Mate 20 Pro. The camera and battery life are something else.
Man I'm torn.

why not give it another try? my concern is how long huawei will support the device for. They have no official time frame for firmware and security updates. At least you have 3 years with a pixel.
Yeah looking forward on mate 30. Like the others that never had any single issue.. This phone is great in any aspect of everyday usage. Might buy another mate but let see how huawei would stand after the nonsense banning of their other services

I bought mine off eBay. If I had to do it again I'd use wonda mobile. They'll actually check if it's a boe panel for you before they ship and they handle warranty. You'd have to ship to China but that's better than ZERO support from even the best eBay sellers. Huawei doesn't do international service so your sol here in the US.
Amazing phone.
I have had great experience! Nice battery life is the best perk no use in having the hardware to do things if the battery won't last! Also have a second one I bought for the wife and she's an iPhone user and didn't like it. If anyone is interested send me a personal message
I know for sure, I would buy it again, it has given me a great service
My only nitpick with this device is the gesture control, so I'm back to 3 button mode. The native Pie gestures work brilliantly, I don't get why Huawei broke it. That's not a deal breaker for me. It's the best phone I've ever used, better than the pixel or note. I'm unashamedly a huge fan of pure Google Android/ asop and use Nokia 7 plus as my second phone, but nothing comes close to my experience with the Mate 20 pro.

You can change that in the battery settings for running apps. Just let the big apps run in the background like games and they won't close. It's all about choice.
All my apps stay open all the time unless i've bloced them.
I wouldn't buy Huawei again, but I would recommend it.
The note 9 is the same as the mate, except with less battery life, slower charging, worse camera, and same aggressive app management unless you tweak it yourself.

why would you not buy Huawei again?
No.
Because of green tint, emui, how notifications are handled, and lack of customization options.
I've been on Samsungs since the S2, so this was quite a change for me, so at first I didn't like the general UI side of things (especially the AOD compared to Samsung's is pretty basic), but I have to say its grown on me.
Speed/fluidity etc on the hardware wide of things are excellent
Fingerprint detection can be random at best, but I'm amazed at the speed and reliability of the face recognition, especially when its dark
Also amazed at the battery life
Shame there's no SD slot. Would be much easier to just take all my music etc from my S7 if it had one. No problem as internal storage isn't an issue, but I'd have preferred an SD slot all the same.
Biggest gripe for me is the notch, or should I say the lack of statusbar icon space.... If you set to "hide" the notch, I would rather there be an option to drop the icons down a line so that a full row of statusbar icons can be seen (I'd rather lose 4-5mm of the screen and gain a full statusbar)
Notch aside, yes, I would definitely recommend, but now I've finally made the plunge and broken away from Samsung after all these years, I think I'd probably go for whatever the current OnePlus offering is in 2 years time to see what thats like!

I've already changed those settings and they've made little difference. Perhaps I need to wipe it and start again (but to be fair, all I've really done is install nova and some Google apps).
