Root info

I have used the instantroot method of rooting my fone (hero)
How do i know if it has worked ?
is there a new app or terminal window installed lets me control apps and settings etc
The easiest way to test if the device is rooted is to open another command prompt in the tools dir and type
adb root
If it returns that adb is already running in root, then you're all set.
Try google next time.

[Q] Disable ADB root login (cyanogenmod)

Now my phone is rooted, engineering boot ROM, with Cyanogenmod installed.
I'm wondering from a security standpoint, if someone happens to take my phone, and I happen to forget to disable USB Debugging, how can I make it harder to use ADB to reformat the phone?
By default, an ADB shell gives root access to the phone. How can you set the ADB shell to default to an unprivileged user that will have to 'su' in order to gain root access?

Click to collapse
I'd really like to know this, too. :b

[Q]My Files.apk root access

Hey Guys,
Would it be possible to give Samsung's stock app "My Files" root access through su or perhaps modifying the code? I purchased root explorer but to be completely honest like the feel of the original app.
No.
Ability to access root must be built into the application. There are only a few that have it. Root Explorer is by far the most popular and most used.
Isn't android based on linux, and don't applications run like programs? So in theory couldn't you use a sudo or su like command that would give the program full rights?
I know it's got to be possible given the environment that it's running in and I feel like it would be relatively rudimentary.
With root access you can use android terminal emulator and the su command to get root access. Or you can use Android Debug Bridge (adb) from a Windows, Mac or linux computer. Since you are new to android, perhaps you should do some searching and reading so you can gain some general knowledge. In the guides linked in my signature you can find some directions for using adb and terminal emulator.
But still, installed applications will only function the way they are programed, and MyFiles does not have root access.
Thanks for your help, i'll look into adb. Inevitably I want to start developing on the kernel level but thought this would be a good place to start.
Have you tried ES File Explorer? It is free and has root access (must be enabled within app settings).
I also was not a fan of Root Explorer.

[Q] How can I execute shell commands from my app with root permissions?

I actually have got a prerooted business device by the device manufacture. Trough adb shell I’m instantly have su permissions without need to use the “su” command.
My app needs for certain operations root permissions. For instance, setting sim-pin by my app is possible, so it seems like, the app has all the root permissions.
My problem is: the app uses some shell commands. e.g. to set the systemtime. But that seems not to work.
On consumer devices like Samsung s4, after rooting the device and installing chainfire su app, setting the systemtime works fine.
My business device coming without preinstalled su-app, so I tried to install chainfire’s su app v 2.46 as a systemapp. But his app told me, my su binaries which comes from the prerooted device aren’t up to date.
So I tried to override them by chainfire’s su binaries to system/xbin, but after that, the su app told me there are no su binaries installed…
How can I execute shell commands from my app with root permissions?
hi
Did you poot afterwards? Look here poot.apk . If your device reboots it should have worked. Or... You can download the debian noroot app from google play store and just use the root terminal if you want to wait for (probably) nearly a 1gb app for only that purpose

Granting root permissions to another user

First I have googled until my fingers bled knowing the answer is out there and apologize in advance if it has been covered in these forums elsewhere.
I have an android appliance running 4.3, I have root access via adb shell. What I want to do is grant root access to the standard users so I have root access using telnet. This is NOT a phone, it will NOT be on the internet so I do not need to worry about root being open to the world. I just need to be able to shell into it and be able to run any command needed via the normal user in telnet. Changing the user permissions seems like an easy way but all linux style sudo and user commands fail (it's a very cut down install in this machine).
Any help would be appreciated,
J
