Change APN on Verizon Galaxy s4?? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So, I just flashed my old s4 to Straight Talk. Voice, and SMS worked fine right from the jump, only thing I had an issue with was Data. When I went to look everything suggested to change the APN settings. Upon trying, I wasn't able to change anything in the APN setting, everything was greyed out. I spent countless hours trying to figure out solutions.. Here are some things I tried:
Entering Developer Mode
Editing something to "yes" in the customer.xsl file
Adding ro.code_source or something like that in the build.prop file
None of that worked. I'm running Hyperdrive 20, so I would think it would be easier with an aftermarket Rom, but I'm stumped. Any tips?

Verizon to Straight Talk
I'm having the same problem. I have had several conversations with Straight Talk reps and so far their answers haven't helped. They are sending me a new Sim card and that is supposed to fix the problem. I doubt it, but it can't get worse!

edit - misread question

I FINALLY have LTE on my Verizon S4.
I now have LTE on Straight Talk!
In settings, under more networks, mobile networks, access point names, tap on Verizon Internet, if you change where it says APN to
tracfone.vzwentp
Tap the back button and make sure it still says tracfone.vzwentp under APN. Then hit the back button and make sure there's a green dot next to Verizon Internet. Then reboot and you should have LTE!

My wife's s4 and my g3 have been on straight talk vzw Sims for a few months now. Every month when the auto refill goes through our data shuts off and the 4g symbol is greyed out next to the signal bars. So I call and they ask me the same dumb questions and then they reset something and I reboot and I have data again.
I saw a thread on Howard forums where a guy detailed out some Apn settings that were different and mentioned something about old and new systems for connecting.
Since verizon is such a bastard about not letting us edit the apns our self fully, I'm going to try this on my wife's s4 next month and try the other apn and this fix on my g3 when the data shuts off. I can edit and create new apns from a hidden menu with shortcut master on my g3.

[Q] Flashed Eris For Cricket, Reverted to Verizon, No 3g :(

So I bought a phone (Eris) off Craigslist to flash it to Cricket. I was able to get all the settings right in order to have MMS\3g using EPST and enjoyed it for a while. Unfortunately, I recently moved to a town that does not have Cricket in it, so I installed a new rom and was able to Activate my phone with Verizon. Unfortunately, I have been unable to access 3g on the Verizon network and was wondering if anyone could post the correct settings to use with epst in order to get 3g working.
Please, I have searched for them but am either using the wrong search term or just cant find a thread that has the settings I need.
I am currently using KaosFroyo V32 but by the time anyone reads this I will have reverted to a rom which allows me to use EPST.
Thanks,
Q
So I switched over to the Xtrsenserom and, just as I thought, the settings in EPST are all still setup for cricket service.
Im going to try #228 and see what happens now that Im not on a Froyo-based Rom anymore
Peace...
AAARrrgggghhh!!!
This so sucks!! The ota did not change the settings (or at least not enough to allow mobile internet) It was so easy to find the settings i needed to change in order to have mobile internet through Cricket. Why is it so hard to find the ones to revert back? Under the NAM Name it still says cricket but my MDN is correct but I can tell a bunch of the numbers in subsequent settings are connected to my old Cricket account... Please help!!
It's *228 for one. Which page in EPST do you need?
Ah I figured it out. It had my old number as min and crickets info for login and a few other abnormalities resulting from cricket. I gotta say this version of Android 2.1 I reverted to in order to access EPST is real nice. I don't think im going back to Froyo for a while. I forgot how nice the dialpad is where you can just dial in part of someones name and all the numbers that fit your input start appearing
can you send me the settings you used in EPST for verizon. I think I may be having similar issues.
Use the verizon RUU.
This will put everything back, you can *228, reroot, then restore your nand backup and uninstall auto start.
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
You know what, just throw a verizon prl file in there, and you should be able to *228.
Try that alltel verizon hybrids one if you can't find any others.

I'm sorry to bring this thread back up.
I just went through 3 days of frustration on this issue and since this thread is the top google result, I want to help others.
I bought a used Droid Incredible that was flashed to Cricket. We had the phone flashed back to Verizon from a local Cricket dealer. However, my data wasn't working at all. After spending 2 hours on the phone with VZW, I learned of ##778. The rep only went through two menus and only one option was different (home nid/sid). It didn't help changing it, and in fact, everytime I do *228, it just goes back to what was in there originally. So anyway...I found the security menu later that night. Noticed that HDR AN AUTH Password and PPP Password said 'cricket'. I deleted that, reboot, and then saw 1x finally pop up, but it wouldn't stick.
Changing PPP Password to vzw made 1x work, but the connection would constantly try to obtain 3g, and reset the connection so it was still unusable for the most part.
Noticed on the Eris (previous phone), those Password values were encrypted...Google research suggested a painful adventure of memory dumps, etc, etc.
Then I found another post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2563813&postcount=32
I blanked out the two password fields, committed, then went to home sid settings (or home sid profile) and changed network type from simple ip mode to mobile ip preferred. Commit, reboot and bam! 3G was there!. I didn't have to, but a *228 may be necessary. The two password fields got updated automagically and now have encrypted values in them. Life is good.
Edit: just wanted to state that in the middle of trying to get data working, I flashed over the verizon RUU, which didn't help immediately, but may have been a compounding solution.

[Q] Straight Talk AT&T APN Settings

I cannot for the life of me get Straight Talk data or MMS working. Phone calls and text work perfectly though.
I bought it online from Swappa, completely stock and followed the Straight Talk instructions that came with the SIM. I never got anything, not even a hint of data. Browsers would immediately say no connection, pic messages would just spin and nothing would happen.
So I went online and tried every single APN that people said "This worked for me," tried them all, restart-my-phone party-2013 and still nothing no connection ever.
So I thought maybe it was the AT&T stock image that wasn't letting me connect. I just flashed to Vanilla Rootbox and have been trying APN settings for the past hour or so. Still nothing, nothing ever changes. My signal has full bars but says ROAM. Which is odd because my brother has AT&T Straight Talk and gets data just fine in the same location I am now.
Am I missing something? Mobile Data is enabled, I've tried enabling data roaming multiple times to no effect.
What could possibly be the issue?

Yeah those were some of the first ones I tried on both the stock and on this ROM.
I enter them, restart my phone, when I open Chrome it just immediately says
"You are offline. Wi-Fi and mobile data are turned off."
Which is not true, because settings clearly shows Data is enabled in two different places. This is so frustrating.
Is there any way to check to make sure the radio that enables data is still working? I've thought about taking it in to the AT&T store to have them test it because I'm about out of ideas about what it could be.

You could try flashing another radio? But if not, I'm sure the people at AT&T could help. Down here they are pretty helpful and friendly no matter what.
Not sure if is your problem but I know with snowjb I and several others had to edit the default XML file then delete the lg one and then goop into APN settings and "reset to default" and select the added ST apn

Hello back everyone. I solved the issue!
It wasn't a problem with my APN settings, it ended up being a problem in the activation of my SIM card with straight talk.
I went through the port process and got my number moved to straight talk and my calls and texts were working fine so I figured it was a matter of just fiddling with the APN settings until I found some that worked. I had heard so many stories about this being the case. Unfortunately, in my case it wasn't true. I tried everything.
Good news is: I called Straight Talk and asked them what else I could do. They walked me through settings the APN settings, which was super frustrating, I literally had the correct settings memorized at this point. Then they asked me what phone I had. I told the CSR and she said "okay, I switched something on our side, restart your phone and see if it works." I was dubious because I had done this so many times but I guess she wasn't lying to me because I restarted and it has worked fine from then on.
tl;dr AT&T Optimus G works great on Straight Talk with an AT&T sim. Just call them if the provided APN doesn't work.
For anyone else with this problem:
I was having a similar issue after just switching (from a working Nokia Lumia 520) to a new LG Optimus G. In my case, the APN settings from my old phone (and the site I got them from) appeared to be out of date.
I went to the Straight Talk site, logged in, and went to Support -> HOW TO UPDATE DATA SETTINGS, entered my phone number and selected Android 4+. This gave me some different settings that are now working correctly.

[Q] Verizon S4 on Metro PCS internet troubleshooting, help

Hello from a noob. I have done the saferoot, text edited the sales dat to AWS and changed the other file (forget the name) from OFF to ON. Basically I switched the IMEI on my Metro account to a 545. I kept the same SIM. The store says there demo SIM does not pick up the internet either. The internet worked for 2 minutes and now there is no logo (4g lte, H+ etc) and no connection to the internet at all. I have tried going into the bands etc. but I think I'm missing something (I guess obviously). I have done "everything". Updated the APN settings etc. etc. It is stock rom except the root and the minor text edited changes. It is on 4.3 android. Can anyone out there please tell me how to turn off the stupid VZN LTE band option (I think that is my problem) however when I put in the *#276... command it doesn't pull up the menu that lets you access the band option like I've seen on Youtube. It gives me a different menu with UMTS at the top. I still haven't found the turn off the VZN LTE option. Any help at all would be appreciated. The dialing and text messaging work so it's a clean phone but for some reason the phone is blocking my damn internet. Thanks for the help.
When you installed the MetroPCS SIM, did you configure the APN to use their network?

Yes sir. I have done it all and nothing has helped. My only thought is finding that switch for the Verizon band or something else in the programming but I can't get to that damn menu. And the *#276.. number is not working on the phone anymore either.
So for those interested that may have Metro and are having the same problem I finally just updated the phone with the stock 4.4 firmware (clean wipe and all that) with Odin and it now works and the LTE no longer shuts off. After hours and hours of agony I finally did it. I tried rooting and everything on 4.3 and I don't care that I lost root - I'm just glad it works now. I do appreciate for what it's worth all the information on here and best wishes to you guys for all the future modding, unlocking the bootloader and all of that. See you around.

[Q] Using phone abroad, can't connect to data network

Hi everyone, I've read quite a few discussions on here but this is my first post.
I've recently moved to Sweden from the US with my sprint lg g3. Before I moved, sprint told me that my plan covers me to use voice and data for free, but only with a specific carrier. They said that it's already taken care of and I shouldn't need to do anything when I get there.
That was one week ago. I've been in Sweden for a week and every day of that week I've spent around an hour on the phone with sprint trying to get my phone to connect to the data network. I get voice just fine, but, from what I understand, the phone is wanting to connect to a different carrier for data and he doesn't know how to force it to connect to the right one.
So, after some digging, it looks like I might be able to create a new apn and maybe connect to the right data network that way? Going down this path, I can't by default add any apns, so I followed another discussion and installed root tweaker to be able to fix that. My phone is indeed rooted on lollipop, but the tweaker doesn't seem to change anything for the apn screen, I still can't add nor edit them.
So, my two questions are, should I even be messing with apns (and if not, what should I be doing), and if I should mess with apns, how can I edit it/make a new one?
Thanks so much in advance, I'm getting frustrated with the sprint guys so I'm trying to take some initiative myself.

Try flashing (in recovery) my "MegaAPN" file. It should support a HUGE amount of carriers. You may also need to unlock your apn's so you can edit them. You can do that by searching for this: com.lge.hiddenmenu.settings.ApnUnlock in shortcut master (lite or pro) and clicking the name of the shortcut then just press the "Launch" button (looks like a little Space Ship). Then just press the little "Unlock APN" button and Reboot. You should now beable to add/edit and remove APN's.
Hope this helps:good:
Hi!
I've tried the shortcut master to unlock my apn, and a dialogue bowstring my apn is unlocked appeared, but after a reboot I still have no options to add or edit an apn.
Luckily I do know the carrier I need to be on, and I've found the apn information for that carrier, I just need to be able to add it in the phone I guess.
Thanks for your help!

Verizon GS4 APN settings completely locked out (switching to Straight Talk)

I am attempting to switch my Verizon GS4 handset to Straight Talk Wireless, but I can't do anything to change the APN settings. I restarted my phone multiple times with the ST SIM in the slot, but it continued to connect to Verizon's network. Some research later, I found that I needed to change the APN to Straight Talk, but I can't.
Only Verizon's LTE access shows up in the menu. There's a + button at the bottom, but it's greyed out, with either SIM (tried both as per this HTC One thread). Pressing the menu softbutton gives me the "reset to default" option, also greyed out and inoperable.
The phone is rooted, still running Jellybean 4.2 MK2 because once I rooted, the OTA updates would fail, and I was never brave enough to try Safestrap. I'm worried this might be part of the same break.

In my experience, IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!
I do NOT mean that in any disrespectful way to you, but I DO mean it in a way against Verizon and Tmobile.
I have the same phone AND the same problem with service; however, I CAN add an APN. The catch is IT STILL CONNECTS TO VERIZON!!!
Now, my phone updated to the utter crap that is Lollipop, and I can no longer get my call-Verizon-voicemail-and-disconnect workaround to work as the connection is a lot more seamless and does not drop/fully disconnect after the call disconnects. Before, I'd goto my notifications and see "NO SERVICE" in the bottom of the slide down box with my VZW voicemail notification with it's 10 voicemails. Then, I'd do my workaround and everything would work (and, by everything, I mean text messaging as voice and data WERE working pre-workaround). But, like I said, now I can no longer do that (Lollipop SAYS it's connected to Tmobile off the bat (right after booting up); however, I CANNOT send text messages NO MATTER WHAT I DO!!!
It's completely aggravating and how Verizon can say they sell a phone "UNLOCKED" when their APN is in there with other APNs and GREYED OUT so you CANNOT REMOVE IT (which, as I've shown above, causes massive problems) and how Tmobile can say ON THEIR SWITCH WEBSITE that my VERIZON SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 *WILL* WORK on their network... it's all beyond me. It's deceptive/straight up lying marketing and the way Tblowbile always tells me they cannot support my phone and to buy a new phone WHEN THEIR OWN WEBSITE SAYS IT WILL WORK is 100% bait and switch and up for a class action lawsuit!
Update: it does appear my service with the ST SIM really is through my Straight Talk account now, despite what the APN settings show. I got my device activation text from ST. This makes sense, since Straight Talk is a virtual carrier buying airtime from the real networks like Verizon.
However, I don't have an LTE connection. I don't have any data connection, just voice and SMS. I'm not sure if that's a problem on my end or the carrier's, but getting the data I'm paying for is less of an emergency than not having any mobile communication.
Has anyone found a work around for this. On straight talk, I can get calls and even internet when set to global network. I cannot text either sms or mms. My APN setting completely grayed out. I can not add or change existing and tried an apn manager with no luck.
I suspect I'll have to flash a completely Verizon-less build to fix it, but I did have an ST representative call me to ask if everything was working and offer to try to help me fix it. I just didn't have time right then and they didn't call back when I asked them to.
Just my experience
Hey not sure if this will help anyone out but I'll add what I've experienced. I have a gs4 running hyperdrive and my data service from straight talk has cut out a couple times before. The first time I just waited, and it fixed itself after a day or two. Second time I called ST and they told me to restart my phone (like I hadn't done that 10 times already). Later that day, data randomly comes back. I noticed that the fix for me was to switch apn settings. Somehow my phone did it automatically. But now my data is MUCH slower than before. Straight talk seems to be a tricky company. You never really know what you'll get with them. Just other carriers' sloppy seconds. Cutouts also seem more common at the end of usage cycles. Seems a lot of people fix it by calling ST
Also, I can edit my APN. Not sure if it's because I'm on an aftermarket ROM or what. But now I'm on the hunt for an APN with better data speeds if possible.
Straight Talk APN
It took me 3 months of calling Straight Talk and telling them they needed to send the right APN settings to my phone, after they finally listened it took 2 minutes until I received a text saying they updated my APN settings. I had the exact same problem as you. I had voice and SMS but not data. And my APN settings were greyed also. Now it says
Verizon Internet
TFTWO.GW9.VZWENTP
You just have to get them to update the APN. Getting them to listen is the hardest part! I hope this helps!
