Rooting guide - Xperia Z4 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone willing to put together easy to follow rooting guide for Xpreria Z4 Tablet?
I am a new owner of said tablet and so far I am little lost still.
So far I have figured out that I need to unlock bootloader trough Sony developer website and then flash AndroPlusKernel v21 +, TWRP, SuperUser...
My tablet is currently running Android 5.0.2 (Build 280.A.8.260) and I am itching to upgrade to Marshmallow. Can I flash AndroPlusKernel once I upgrade to Marshmallow or do it now? I own Xpreria Z3 phone and rooting needs to be done on lower Android versions because otherwise one needs to downgrade first to root and then flash modified ROM.

Hi,
Unlocking bootloader causes a factory reset. So you lose the update to MM (I'm not sure after all
After that see my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z4-...ooting-attempt-using-androplus-t3331928/page2

I suggest
doing an OTA update to MM while on stock (this is the easiest update path)
make sure MyXperia is OFF at all times
unlock bootloader through Sony (tablet will be wiped)
flash AndroPlus Kernel (v20+)
flash TWRP (see AndroPlus Kernel topic)
flash SuperSU
make absolutely sure MyXperia is OFF at all times
Optional: donate a bit to AndroPlus and Chainfire, or buy some of their apps / Pro licenses, to thank them for their hard work

Perfect, done! I'm running rooted Marshmallow now. Many thanks!

I want to do exactly the same and have some questions.
Is app "MyXperia" installed in MM ? I'm asking because I cant find it any more.
Is it possible and safe completely uninstall "MyXperia" it after root MM ?
Any advices ?

I can see my Xperia in Settings/Security on Marshmallow where it gives you an option to activate it.
I don't see it among apps where it could be disabled or uninstalled...

Everything sounds good but:
How do you boot into recovery?
How can you flash SU from Fastboot?
I'm stock in that step, please help.

Once you flash recovery, restart your tablet and press volume down button when the white screen with SONY Xperia is on and "yellowish/greenish" LED lights up. The LED will turn orange and tablet will enter recovery. While in recovery, flash SuperSU that you have previously downloaded and saved on your tablet.

Judging by the posts I've read and from my own experience, it appears if your tablet has been rooted or if its boot loader has been unlocked, OTA updates will fail.
You could relock bootloader if You would have TA backup. Without this I think it is not possible

No, I don't have a TA backup, as I bought this second hand. It is an inherited problem !
I guess I will need to go the whole way with the tablet, and try and load KitKat 4.4.2 from an image.
I have a large learning curve to climb.
Does Google Play work on images that are uploaded to the SPG311 tablet ? What other limitations are there from using a custom ROM (even if it is a Stock ROM) ?

I believe you can simply relock your bootloader using Flashtool by following these steps:
1. Make sure you're using the latest version of flashtool
2. In flashtool click the button that says 'BLU'
3. When it asks you to, connect the tablet in flashmode (hold the volume down button while connecting it)
4. Click on 'Relock' on the prompt window that will open
5. Follow whatever instructions flashtool gives you and disconnect the device after its done
But please verify this by searching online before trying it out because I'm not an expert and I did this on a Xperia Z Ultra succesfully but not on the Tablet Z. I wouldn't want to be responsible for messing up your tablet!
Once you do relock the bootloader OTA updates will be allowed.

In case anyone finds this thread:
I was able to successfully downgrade to a 4.1.2 image, root, then upgrade to a 4.4.2 10.5.A.0.230 STOCK ROM using the instructions at
[STOCK ROM] [Root] [FTF] 4.4.2 Kitkat Xperia Tablet Z SGP311 10.5.A.0.230 VMo UK IE. Very good instructions, and easy to follow.
Now my SGP311 is on 4.4.2, rooted, and I have not had any problems at all with Google Play. I don't think I have found any limitations.
Hope this helps.

You will likely be waiting some time, because it's possible to downgrade and flash pre-rooted zip or to OTA certain FW's maintaining root, I don't see devs putting a lot of effort into finding an exploit. That said best hope is probably an exploit being found for Z3 which is transferable to Z2, but as I say you may be waiting some time.

Try to create a rooted update package from the update ftf: [4.4.4] Create ROOTED update package from stock FTF [LOCKED BOOTLOADER]
So I need to flash dual recovery to do that
How can I make a full stock backup just in case I need to use it for warranty?

You don't need, you can flash back an original ftf anytime or repair with Sony PC Companion. We are talking locked bootloadr, so until you don't unlock it, you have warranty.
But if you already have root on prev. firmware, you should install DualRecovery and boot into TWRP and you can backup your system there.

Yes, if you have older firmware on the phone, you can try the root options available and you can use recovery without unlocking th bootloader. If you have the latest, than you can possibly flash an older firmware to your phone and root that. But you need to read a bit, to understand everything correctly.

Basically the steps are as follows: Downgrade to Android 4.4.2 using Flashtool, then root with TowelRoot, install XZDualRecovery, then install a prerooted flashable Lollipop with TWRP if you like Lollipop. No need to unlock the bootloader. All the information should be available in the forum. Good luck!

That would be the last step to use the prerooted flashable.
I would recommend not unlocking your bootloader. If you want to unlock it, you need to run an additional program to backup your DRM keys, otherwise they will be lost for good.
You will need the correct 4.4.2 FTF file for your model number, then use Flashtool to flash it. It will wipe everything and restore to factory defaults. Instructions in the following post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2-tablet/general/ftf-collection-locked-unlocked-bl-t3061431
Then you can basically follow the instructions in this post to root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792056
And XZDualRecovery from this post:

[Q] Newbie here and I need a little help

Hi
First time using android phone. I just got a Z2 D6503 model with 5.0.2 Lollipop android (in the UK), build number: 23.1.A.1.28. I would like to root my phone as some apps need to the phone to be rooted in order to work properly. So can you guys please suggest any that I can read on?
Also, I saw some posts around said that you should not mess up with bootloader (a partition which holds Sony's special features according to my narrow knowledge). As I just started to use the phone, is there anything I need to know so I don't **** my phone up in the first place, which many newbies did, 'cause I have no backup phone at the moment. Just send me some thing to read. Any help will be appreciated.
Additionally, is the stock rom of Z2 good enough? Or I should flash some other cooked rom? I don't need fancy things, just an efficient system that helps me do the work.
Thank you very much for your patience!
Cheers!
Congratulations on your new Z2!

Hi
I followed this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/root-t3108230 to root my phone but it seems not to work.
Do you have a solid guide to root a Z2 phone? And how to backup all of my data before doing that?
OK, I have XZdual recovery 2.8 installed on my Z2, I check root using root checker and it said the phone was rooted successfully. Using ROM manager from clockmod, I also see that I have the recoveries installed. However, when I turn off the phone and on again, it does vibrate at press, then after Sony logo shows up, a red LED flash, I cant get to recovery by either pressing up and down buttons several times. What is wrong with my recovery?

I only got a Z2 recently, I read everything and downgraded to 4.4.2 to root it without unlocking the boot loader. Then I backed up my TA partition in case I decide to go custom. After that I flashed it back to 5.0.2 keeping root.
I managed to do all of that by reading the information already provided. Stop being so bloody lazy.

Use either this: https://mega.co.nz/#!QZc23YbK!gi5mrwEQNA63565s3BCaeQrYiRkt0pd_HNmb_K16e8E or this http://www.mediafire.com/download/0b8828828cmf58c/Xperia_Z2_eXistenZ_Y_v2.0.0.zip for download
Since you already are on eXistenz, you do NOT have to wipe data, and therefore won't lose anything

How can I root my Z2 with Marshmallow?

Hey!
recently flashed the Autralian MM FTF onto my Z2 D6503!
Now i miss my loved apps like Greenify, Lucky Patcher, Intelli3G, XPOSED, a custom recovery, amplify and so on. I tried to root it using KingRoot4.6 (sucsessfully) and then used Supersume.apk to replace the kingroot app with supersu. but after every reboot i need to root it again, which means my methode isn``t working problery! How can i root it? i really want SuperSU, Busybox, Xposed and the [NUT`s] Dual Recovery!
thats the build:
D6503_23.5.A.0.570_1281-9715_R4D
It depends on weather you want to unlock your bootloader or not
I typically flash a Kernel with recovery then flash systemless root but you do require a unlocked bootloader to do it this way
You could downgrade to KK, use a root tool to install root and recovery then use recovery to upgrade to a pre-rooted MM

Afaik the only way for the moment, it's to downgrade to a previous version, then flash a MM pre rooted rom.

You can use a tool called PRFCreator, you will need a SuperSu zip and a FTF of your choice

I tried to do that (downgrading to KK, rooting, dual recovery, making a flashable pre rooted MM) but ended up with bootloops. Tried to flash a stock however I, with difficulty, could only flash KK again. This time I used wirelessly downloaded all the software updates.
I think I will wait some time, till a better way exists.
There is a pre-rooted MM in the forum, I've tried earlier. But it is for D6503, not my d6502. It has a 3g fix, but in About Phone, it reads D6503. And root isn't working there as well. or perhaps I was doing something wrong.
I'm starting to think that MM isn't root-friendly

You will get the root soon for MM. This is why I hate Sony devices. Updates also comes late and rooting also comes late. Fed-up with this z2. Gonna go with Samsung

I think this post will help you to have Stock MM ROM with root, and recovery and keep you bootloader locked

hehe thanks mate, but I have already rooted my Z2 with MM a week ago and isntalled xposed and a TWRP recovery
I simply created a flashable zip from the 6.0.1 ftf and a supersu 4.61 beta
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/6-0-1-d6503-23-5-0-570-prerooted-t3364817
then I followed these steps to get the recovery:

i didnt notice that
you since you have a unlocked bootloader can now flash the "advanced Stock kernel" found in one of the dev sections, through that you can flash supersu
