Introduction
I see a lot of people asking how to start make custom kernels (This is well beyond the scope of this guide, for a great introduction check out Building Your First Kernel), or I want to port CM, AOKP, AOSP, etc. to my device. Well that great except you can’t begin to make a custom kernel or truly port CM, AOKP, AOSP, etc. without the appropriate kernel source code for your device. The following list tells you where you can find the kernel source code (Among other bits and pieces of code essential to development) for your device based on your manufacturer, as well as some other places to look for kernel sources.

While Mediatek sources are not officially available except through third-party repositories (Usually github) or some manufactures websites, Mediatek is taking steps to be more open source and GPL compliant with the release of MediaTek Labs. I wasn't able to find the source for Micromax devices and from what I have read they don't seem to release there kernel source . I suppose you could try contacting them about it if you wanted to.

Micromax uses qualcomm chipsets. You can find their kernel here. Just look at your device's build.prop for ro.product.board. For example, my Micromax A57 uses msm7627a chipset.

Any kernel sources publicly available for Mediatek SOCs MT(K) 6575 6577 6583 6588 ? I couldn't find anything Is Mediatek open source friendly ?
PS: I ask this because I consider buying a dual sim dual active android phone and best bang for the buck seems to be offered by MT6577 devices like ZTE Grand X (V970), Huawei Ascend G500 (U8836D,U8832D) and many other chinese phones.
Also, devices based on MT658x started appearing on the market too.

It seems Mediatek is not that open source friendly, the small bits and pieces I could find on Mediatek SOC's were long outdated or really incomplete sources.

Damn
I found few customized roms for Mediatek based phones....but virualy all of them use stock unmodified kernels form manufacturers.
Did any developer (interested in Mediatek based phones) tried to contact Mediatek regarding support policy for their SOCs ? The strange thing is that, although most mediatek based phones target Asia (China, India, etc), virtually all asian developers around xda-forum seems to target high end international phone models based on more widely spread SOCs. I wonder if this is related to poor SOC support from Mediatek or just poor phones quality. Probably first one .

i'm a noob to android, but i have nit of experience on other unix based systems.
I was wondering, why there is no custom roms for GT-S5690?
What's the problem?
Is bootloader locked some other way or is it somehow different from example Gio/GT-S5660?

I have one xcover, wich has no screen and covers, i thought i could use it for testing.
I think there are too less people who have a xcover, and I was actually pretty disappointed when I say there is a successor to the xcover available only in the US (Rugby Smart / Pro <-- with ICS!).
From the technical side, I don't know. Even the source code of the firmware is available at opensource.samsung.com. The Bootloader seems pretty much unlocked.
For me, the xcover is the best phone ever, it takes so much abuse. Maybe someday someone will port a newer ROM from the Ace/Gio/idk. It's a shame Samsung abandons their old phones :crying:

I'm not a developer, atleast YET..
AFAIK, hardware of s5690 is way different from any other samsung phones,

Seems like it's the only one with a Marvell MG2.

Just flashed my xcover to XXLJ2 yesterday. At least it seems a bit faster now, but I have a weird bug when scrolling. If I give a list (for example settings) momentum, it doesn't stop when I put my finger on it again. But it does stop if I release the finger the second time.

file, this seems interesting. Apparently someone is trying to port it.
Edit2: In this git, there is also a "extract-files.sh"-file, which is neccessary to pull the proprietary files from the phone! With this I think we actually have everything we need to compile ICS/JB, like in the "freeyourandroid" tutorial.
I have never done this before, but someone must try it lol.

I own an xcover too a developer on another forum looked at some files i pulled using adb to try to port clockworkmod but no success. Told me the files i sent weren't standard android img but he would continue to look into it. Apparently the teamhacksungs goal is to port cyanogenmod for every Samsung device surely they can get it done. I've been waiting a long time to see some development for the awesome xcover

If its possible on the galaxy mini its got to be possible on xcover!. Ive tried to get involved and learn to port cyanogenmod but when it comes to git, repo, source tree, source code e.t.c e.t.c its a bit behond me for now.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which I want to build an image for. I followed the procedures given by http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Build_for_hlte#Prepare_the_device-specific_code and I was able to compile it successfully. But I have an issue, and that is I need to patch the code to get additional functionality. The patch I need to apply is only available for Jelly Bean, and the Cyanogenmod procedures use Kitkat. I tried to manually apply the patch, and I had to remove a number of lines before the image compiled. But when I flash the phone with it, I get an error about NFC adapter. Basically the message says that NFC adapter is disabled. I think I know why it says that. The patch is for allowing extended functionality of NFC adapter, and well you know...It seems like either me or the patch broke the NFC adapter. Most likely it was me I tried to download the Jelly Bean version from Cyanogenmod repo, but the procedures explicitly say not to. And when I tried, I get a repo sync error and the whole thing does not download. So I am trying to do something different. I like to download the phone's source code from Samsung Source code. But that is just the kernel as I understand it. There is a lot of what Cyanogenmod people call "proprietary blob", which they provide a way to extract from the phone. So this is why I am where I am, and I am trying to mix the two together. Please tell me if there is a better way for me. And if not, then I like to know if it is possible for me to replace the Cyanogenmod source that I downloaded from Git repository with the Samsung Source and successfully compile it. I wish I could just download Cyanogenmod's version 10.5; I think they remove the previous version due to resource issues. I am not sure. I have to say Cyanogenmod rocks. My understanding is most developers there and here on this site are really busy. More power to you guys. You are really doing a big service for the open source community. Thank you all.

Where can I found the source code for build android for Alcatel pop c7 ?
I wrote a whole piece on how you could contact them, but they actualy shared sources for alott of their phone's and such already.
But that doesnt make it a ready 1-2-3 step compile android for yourself Ow no, Alcatel like many companies only comply by the licenses to share any source they used or modifications they made if required by lisences. If they have a NDA with Mediatek (wich they do) they are probably not required to include proprietary software, tools or sources they got from mediatek.
Think mediatek chipset specific header files, drivers, firmware (only binairy blobs might be shared). maybe they share enough for you to compile a working kernel and filesystem, but no signing keys, maybe the resulting files will run on a rooted, Custom firmware phone but No updates, some hardware not working, maybe the phone funstion doesnt work (due to missing specific code to use the mobile chipset).

Hi,
First of all, OnePlus do release their source code. But if you want to modify your phone and keep OxygenOS, you don't look it the right place.
With root you can have a lot more possibilities for customization, so I'll advice you to check Magisk (a root manager/ customization tool with which you can install modules).
If you want to theme your device you can use Substratum, and install themes from the Play Store.
Search about them and give them a try if you want to

thank u for getting back to me! i took a look at their github page but it said they stopped releasing the source code because it can be found elsewhere, and i cant find where exactly that is. i dont want to modify the OS as is (root it and customise that way), i mean getting the source code, changing, removing and adding things and then flash my own custom flavour of oxygenOS onto my phone. i figure going with what comes with my phone is best when getting into android development so that there are as few compatibility issues as possible. would you be able to point me exactly how i might obtain the source code? it would be very cool my dude

i am indeed familiar with git, but i dont exactly understand what i am wanting from that page. i want the full source code to oxygenos and the kernal/binary specific packages for my phone. i previously found this site before but to my knowledge what is on there doesnt get me the source code. am i missing something? thank you for your helps

Check under the Android section on that page. Which specific OnePlus device do you have? There are many of them. I can help you find it if I know your model.

i see where you mean. but it seems like they stopped doing these releases. on their latest release (11 months ago) they said; "based on conversations we had with our dev community and the fact that we have only made few changes on AOSP(Qualcomm BSP) device tree, we will not be releasing AOSP device trees for future devices, the community can get the baseline from our device and get the source code from Qualcomm."

They're probably referring to CAF sources for the Qualcomm bit. The baseline part is probably a reference to the script that's in the Android section. This is the closest thing to what you're after that I can find.

ah yes. my brain has clicked with the baseline part, i would plug my phone in and it would use adb to extract the "baseline"? i understand this process. is what i am asking for difficult? perhaps i am better off taking the kernal files for my phone and integrating it with stock android that i would build and practicing with that? i really appreciate your effort but this "android blobs" is apparantly for reference only, i have no idea what android blobs is. i went into this knowing oneplus isnt extremely AOSP friendly compared to Sony for example, but i am going to push on. do you have any advice? this doesnt appear to be a friendly introduction into existing OS modification by sticking with OxygenOS
