I haven't rooted and I could download and apply the OTA fine, so it would appear that rooting prevents OTA!

Hello,
I have an LG g3 (Verizon VS985) which is non rooted and in stock condition, The thing is I bought it from open market and I am not a Verizon user which means it is sold most probably after being career unlocked or tampered, Everything in the phone works like a charm but today I got this problem with the software update
The problem is that my phone always gives me up to date status when i check for updates, i thought it must be some problem with the update servers or my phone so i tried updating via Verizon Software upgrade assistant on PC.
The software tells me the same that my phone is up to date whereas we all know that Verizon has rolled out VS98511C update 3 days ago.
The weird thing is that the phone # it shows in upgrade assistant is 000000000, which i think is because it is career unlocked.
I want help regarding the fix to this problem and how can i update to VS98511C , Kindly guide me in detail to get latest updates as I am new to all this and I am waiting for Android L update on my phone as well. I like my phone to be stock for a while because i like new G3 interface, before i root it and install custom roms.
P.S : I wonder how to do the update.zip procedure and will it work ? given the tampered nature of carrier.

Your 2nd to last paragraph seems misinformed - you should NOT update if you EVER want to be able to root and/or run custom roms. Currently, the 11c update blocks the ability to root, and contains an anti-rollback safeguard. I would strongly suggest avoiding it like the plague. Just my 2c.
Actually rooting is not the primary thing here. I like stock rom better so update is the priority.... I hope someone helps me.

Whatever is going on with your phone, it has nothing to do with it not being carrier locked. None of the Verizon LG G3's were ever carrier locked. Even stock unrooted as they ship they will accept any GSM sim. Mine works on T-Mobile and ATT GSM and LTE, for example, as well as Verizon LTE, depending on which sim I currently have installed.
As far as getting your G3 back to factory v10b, you will need to search XDA for instructions on how to restore the v10b .TOT file. Since your intent is to get the OTA to install, destroying your G3 probably forever as far as development is concerned, you are on your own for that project. I have done it. Its tricky but works, but once you are on the OTA afterwards you are out of the game altogether and cannot even restore a working factory image At All, even if you need to.

Ok tha ks for clarifying... Can you olease explain what is v10b ? Sorry for the noob question xD
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Free mobile app
Version 10b is the firmware that Verizon originally shipped on the G3. There has been one update so far. That is called the Over The Air (OTA) update. Your phone will automatically update if it is on the stock firmware (v10b).

Ok so the thing is if my phone is on factory software why havent i recieved the update like others...? I mean it should normally.
Does update depend on area because I am outside US right now
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Free mobile app
That is probably the problem, being outside the USA and so, I guess not on Verizon's network? If you have a different vendor sim chip installed, that might also block the OTA.
If I were you, I would root you G3 with stump-root, then bump it to install TWRP recovery, then keep an eye out here on XDA for the developers to release a TWRP-flashable version of the safe and useful parts of the OTA (if any) and apply them via TWRP.
Thanks for clarification.... I will do it on the weekend, can i send you PM if i need some assistance during root n all ...?

To my knowledge, a Verizon sim is needed to get OTA updates from this phone, which I do not have. Was wondering if anyone can possible grab a KDZ, possibly through the LG Upgrade Assistant or by their phone?
As of now we can only use the OTA method, which if you are rooted, requires you to hard flash the stock kdz over and wait at least 2 hours or more for the backend of the phone to update. The VS99022A kdz still hasn't been found yet, sorry.
Maybe through the Verizon software assistant but I haven't tried

That's what I'm asking someone to do if possible. For me, when I try the Update Assist, it says I'm up to date since I don't have a Verizon sim card.

Hello I just got my T Mobile V10 updated to Marshmallow.
Can somebody help me with the steps to root it. I would like to remove some LG and T Mobile bloat, but still would like to keep it ready for future OTA updates.
Yes, the first step would be to send it back, get a new one, and don't update the device to marshmallow... As there is no root method now for 6.0 on this device when bone stock.

Oh. OK. I didn't know that. I will wait for somebody to come up with a rooting solution for MM. Don't want to go back to the old one, because of the improvements especially the Finger Print unlock.
Sit tight, there's a Vietnamese dev that supposedly has MM root and will be releasing it soon.
root is available for MM. it's in the general section

I was finally able to get LG to repair my V10 under warranty to fix that overheated processor issue! Which is great, I hear people were having trouble getting LG to respond. I just asked via Facebook messenger and things got rolling.
But now I received the phone back and it's got Nougat! Nooo!! The whole point of keeping the V10 was for the wide compatibility of rooting, Xposed, customization etc and now I'm afraid I'm stuck in Nougat hell. Is there a way to downgrade back to Marshmallow safely? I'm trying to search the answers but the results are somewhat chaotic. I read that a Samsung user was able to downgrade his S7 no problem. Please point me in the right direction, anyone.

Not possible currently, unless some of the Devs can come up with a way.

Crap. So if I try to flash a backup I made back in Marshmallow, I'll brick?
Sent from my LG-H918 using Tapatalk
Possibly, although i don't know for certain. Nor do I know how to flash a backup without TWRP or some other recovery.

Sorry to bring this back up, but any news on this front?

I have seen that h901 30b and 30c both are on ARBv2. And luckily 20j and 20l are also on ARBv2 while 20e is on ARBv1. So it would be safe to downgrade an h901 from 30b or 30c to 20j or 20l using LGUP without any problems actually.

You can find the kdzs here.
Edit: Try using uppercut to flash if lgup fails.

If I was to use this method, do I do "refurbish" in LGP Or "upgrade" In LGUP. I assume cause I would be going from 7.0 to 6.0 It would be refurbish. or does it not matter? I'm running the T mobile LGV10 H901 30c

Use refurbish for downgrade. I guess it should matter.
@NestorRamUre
Did you use refurbish option or upgrade option (while downgrading from 30B to 20J or L)? May be you were using upgrade option, due to which you were getting the error. If so, try it with refurbish option.

Yeah I tried it, and it just gets stuck on 7% and fails. So I flashed back to 7.0 and all is well.
why downgrade is possible on 961, but not possible on 901?! the same phone!
Still no decision to downgrade h901 from 30c?

I used lgup to try to downgrade to 20L, 20J, 20e all don't work, tried Refurbish option, update option but all don't work, always failed. I think it's not possible to downgrade to marshmallow. LG sucks

I finally have an answer as to WHY you can't downgrade to MM even though ARB wasn't incremented.
When Nougat was released, the updated laf (download mode) to only flash KDZs that have a signature. MM KDZs don't have that signature.
If someone wants to get me the partition listing (instructions in the root thread), then you guys will have root again -- even on Nougat.
-- Brian
So we're you able to figure it out?

Were you able to figure out if one could downgrade to mm on v10 h901?
No, it is not possible unless you are rooted, but I finally have a working root method for Nougat. Just waiting on @famewolf to provide me some information to see if it needs to be modified for the V10 (working on G4 and V20).
