You can use USB as external memory. The increase of the internal memory is not available

The main reason I want to root is to increase internal memory available for app installation. I have a tablet with AML8726-MX with only 8GB memory and i added a 16GB sdcard later. Adding 2GB or 3GB would be good.
Once I install the root or custom root firmware, should I assume that I will be able to adjust the partition size for internal memory. I assume this would be done by editing some file.
