My Fire HDX (4th Gen, running OS 5.1.2) suddenly stopped running video's. I've restarted it several times, and made sure it was fully charged, but it refuses to run any video's either from Prime video, or my library. Is there anything else I can do?

Rooted? If so you *might* be able to clear cache and dalvik which sometimes get mucked up. Unfortunately the reset options in FireOS also clobber personal apps/data. You probably don't want to go that route.
Although a long shot put your device into recovery mode (<power>+<vol-up> from cold start) and report back on options displayed. Curious if Amazon included more robust recovery/reset options during the FireOS v4 to v5 upgrade. May simplify clearing the caches noted above.

I have read the threads of Prime owners that had a problem with random reboots. I was lucky that I hadn't had this problem. Actually the only issue I've had is that my GPS is completely dead. However, I notice that after the .14 update I am experiencing periodic reboots. Has anyone else (that didn't have a reboot problem before the recent update) notice a similar issue?? Thanks
My Tf prime was working fine on. 13 (but has random reboot on. 11)
after upgrade to. 14, Reboot issue comes back, so I downgarde to. 13 again....and it works great again

Make sure you do a cold boot after any firmware update. (hold vol down and power button). Ultimate solution is to do a factory reset. Especially if you experience problems. DO not install any apps. See what happens with factory. Then slowly install your apps from market and go from there.

I've tried the reset/cold boot (using the power/volume down option and also the reset below the SD card slot). Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do I do a factory reset? I've seen reference to it, but can't find a "how to" anywhere. Thanks again.
nope, mines was fine on .11 then when i updated to .13 i have the reboot and sleep of death issue. .14 update did not cause any issues yet...so far so good

Go to settings, Backup and reset, Factory data reset. Note, this will erase all your data, and your apps, but, if you have your tablet set to backup your Google account, once you enter it again on the initial setup, all the apps will restore to the tablet (Minus saved games)
If you are rooted, you can take ths further with Titanium Backup, grabbing saved games and whatnot. Also note: If you have ANYTHING of value, any docs or pictures on the internal memory (Shows as "SD Card), back all that up to a Micro SD, or somewhere in the cloud with Box.net, Skydrive or DropBox.
Finally, if you have any apps that need deactivation on one device before activating on another, such as CoPilot - HAHA - (A navigation app, hahahahaha... sorry, the tears were rolling on that one) better deactivate BEFORE you wipe the tablet.

Nothing will work for a few of us with the new update .14. Doesn't matter what you do reboot will still happens.
here is a thread i created (for the op) is basically the same thing you are experiencing

The options are few if you have persistent rebooting at .11, .13 or .14. But at least now you HAVE options. Thanks to the good folks who figured out how to downgrade FW, and apply any level that works best for you (though I am truly puzzled why suppossedly identical hardware experiences the wide variations of outcome on each sucesive update. We cannot blame software installations (except in a few cases, such as the guy who turned WeatherBug Updates off) since quite a few folks have done a Factory Data Reset, with no change)
Search for a link to the thread that shows how to apply whatever version is most stable on your particular tablet.

Tried the factory reset...it did the reset, but it was to ICS and the .14 update automatically. It also started downloading all my apps automatically. I did another factory reset, but this time didn't enter my google account, the apps didn't auto download, but the freeze/reboot is still happening and if anything...it's worse. My tablet is all but useless now.
I downloaded ver 9.4.2.14 and now have more reboot issuses than I had before. Would reboot 1-2 times a day now reboots 2-3 times in a 30min time span. How do you go back to ver 13 was better than.
sorry to hear that manly..
I was fine with .11 and the .13 gave me bad battery and .14 gives me constant reboots. I followed advice about doing a cold reboot and it made the freeze/reboot issue worse. So like you my Prime is almost useless. I'm going to try and save my pics and then may try a factory reset. Which IMO we should not have to do if the firmware was done correctly.
I do need to look for the post about rolling back of a firmware that works.
Like everyone else, the .14 update has horribly ruined my device. Typing 1 email, the device rebooted 3 times. This should be a bigger deal then this! Does anyone know of a more social place to voice these complaints?

Just been experimenting - browsing seems to trigger my reboots (tried Chrome, Boat and stock) as does the XDA app, but just watched a couple hours of YouTube and no reboots. Did see a couple of strobing artifacts in the upper left hand corner when browsing videos.

Hi,
I managed to reproduce my reboots quite consistently
Please follow this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1572281&highlight=reboot
I have been facing reboots since my first version of firmware, can't recall which one.
But after 2 firmware updates, now .21, I'm facing more reboots than ever. Let's make ASUS fix this for good.

why have you resurrected 3+ threads with this exact same post? its not needed on all reboot threads. one is good enough.
reported for other posts to be deleted. this info is only needed in one. spamming all reboot threads with this won't solve problem any faster.
good info but dang, don't keep reposting it in all reboot threads spanning very old firmwares..lol
I don't mean to spam but to reach out to everyone who is facing reboots, but lazy to search properly. ASUS doesn't seem to take this seriously at all. I gave them the steps and was asked to contact the local support instead.
Do the math, after so many firmware revisions, still facing reboots.
Can you help try the steps and let me know if it reboots for you as well? Thank you.
I am not even sure what happened. I was using Splashtop THD Gaming and it lags over the internet. The website says to lower your tablet resolution. So I installed LCD Resolution Root and lowered the resolution. I did that and it permanently ****ed up my user interface. Even after I uninstalled LCD RR my UI was showing some apps big and small etc. I had another launcher installed so I was gonna use it in the meantime. I thought I could fix the problem with my UI by clearing my Amazon Launcher in the app section. I have done that before on 13.3.2.4 and it fixed itself. Well I am on 13.3.1.0 right now. So I cleared the Amazon Launcher and it didn't do anything but now everytime I launcher the Amazon Launcher it kept asking for my language so I would give it then as soon as that closed it would ask it again in a loop. So I tried uninstalling the Amazon Launcher and reinstalling it but it would not uninstall. So I just hit factory reset. The Kindle restarted properly and it lead me to the lock screen. I unlocked it and it gave me a blank screen. When I tried powering it off it showed me the buttons on the bottom: home button, back arrow etc. but it showed nothing else. So I rebooted it and now it just has the Kindle Fire logo and nothing is happening.
I do not know what's going on. I have cleared the Launcher before on 13.3.2.4. I guess the old version I have now is unstable. Is there anything I can do? I can still open safestrap. And this is on my stock OS which is not modified in any way other than root.
Thanks and I am still reading other threads.
Good News I just help with a small detail.
I was able to backup and restore my current mishappen OS to a second ROM slot and although only the lock screen appeared I was able to access my kindle drive on my computer so I downloaded and installed Amazon OS for 13.3.1.0 on a rom slot and it works. So my kindle is useable but what can I do to fix my stock os? The launcher is broke on the stock OS.
FIXED
Well I fixed it. I ended up just restoring and fixing it.
Sorry for wasting space. Still not sure what the issue was.
Good to hear you fixed it

Goodluck.
Not sure what is causing this to my Nexus 9 lte on t-mobile. It has been working great then today this message will just not stop popping up.
I've trying going to the apps area and uninstalling play store update, clearing cache but it's tough to do since when you click ok on this message, it immediately pops right back up.
I've tried wiping dalvik and cache in recovery to no avail.
I have even nandroided back to the stock with root I created immediately after I rooted using the wugfresh program.
It boots fine, then I install the programs I need to install and update the apps. All works fine. However, when I reboot, this message comes back again and pops up immediately again once I hit the ok button.
Please help. I figured once 5.1 came out, I would just wipe and flash the 5.1 but the way this is going is pretty much rendering my tablet useless since the message is always popping up.
Please help. Thank you,
Whiteice

Same here. Untouched stock 5.0.1 ROM. WiFi only tablet.
Might be worth mentioning that I got a google app update today before this started happening.
What the **** Google!!!!!!!
Tablet has important work stuff and its unusable now.
Weird. I just had the same thing happen on my MotoX (2013) yesterday, but my N9 is fine.
My MotoX is rooted, so I manually deleted all gapps from /system/app/ and /system/priv-app/ and /data/app/ then reinstalled SlimRoms minimal gapps package. I never did figure out what the exact problem was.
---update---
Rats, I spoke too soon. Got this error again on my MotoX today. Fortunately, it only seems to pop up once a day, so I can live with it for now.

mine is doing this today too. first time I've reboot in a while and it started up after the boot. im on stock with fire ice kernel. musta been a google play service.update that broke something.
I had this happen today: constantly popping up making tablet virtually useless.
tried various things, wipe cache/dalvik, reset all app preferences, and others.
This is what finally worked:
Settings->apps->all->Google play services->manage space->clear all data
This is a rooted WiFi N9 running stock 5.01
Hope this helps!
i cleared data and cache of just about everything and unistalled everything i could (tedious task trying to hit the screen before the anr pop up). i just used this as an excuse to switch from stock to AICP - i'm on wifi only. so no biggie and i got a better more customizable version of lolli. still PIA that it even happened.
This just happened to my N9 wifi this morning. It rebooted on its own (stock but rooted) then the message came up. The problem I had was that the message wouldn't stop so I couldn't access anything in the Settings. I tried the no wipe with Wug's but no change. Trying a wipe mode. What a PITA. Heading to google forums to see what's been reported.
The problem is being reported at google products forums--happening on N5 also. So far, wipe with toolkit (even using the factory reset mode) hasn't done anything. On to checking which recovery I have and do on tab reset.
Happened again this morning!!!
Tablet startup was unusually slow then i was greeted by gapps crashing over and over rendering the tablet unusable.
I'm starting to think this is caused by data corruption. Filesystem or nand problems?
Lollipop is killing lots of nexus 7 devices, I'm worried we might be next!!!

Google play services was updated to 7.3.28, see if that's the version you have. Also try clearing cache for it.

I followed jetfin's suggestion and cleared all data and it worked!!
A Google search reveals that a lot of people have had this issue for the past couple of months.
It saddens me to see the state that android/Google are in.
Edit: looking at battery usage, I found that the dex2oat utility has been working too hard. I'm guessing the problem is with ART corrupting the play services update. Either a ROM issue or a bad update from Google!!
Works!

I had this issue a month or so ago, had to wipe Google play data and wipe cache in recovery (which took bloody ages).

this has also been happening to me over the last few days - mine was occuring on galaxy s5 though, had to keep re-installing a backup (lucky I had a recent one). fixed it by wiping google play data.. popups stopped immediately
For the past 4 months when I try to watch something on my kindle. The sound may be normal for the first few minutes but then goes to static and becomes a very high pitched wine that gets annoyingly loud and then stops. I've ran virus scans and tried various things I could find on google but have not found any information pertaining to my particular problem. It will do it with earbuds on also. So I do not think it is the speakers themselves. I've restored the system many times to a fresh start to no avail. Not really sure what has caused this to begin happening. When the problem first occurred I had done nothing different. Just turned on youtube and started to watch some videos. As I had done many times before.
If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. Thanks to any who may reply!

Very unlikely a 'virus' or other malware is causing the problem. Symptoms suggest a hardware issue causing the audio 'chip' (actually integrated into the mainboard) to behave erratically as it heat up during playback. It is also possible a flaw in the Operating System is triggering the problem.
Don't have any immediate ideas to fix the problem on FireOS other than a complete system reload (different than a factory reset) which can be difficult to do if you are already at the most current version (4.5.5.1). Amazon does not provide a method for manually reinstalling FireOS on HDX devices, only upgrading the the most current release.
As an alternative you can install a different ROM (replaces FireOS with generic Android) which should fix the sound issue if it's not due to a hardware problem. You would also gain access to the full Google Play store and can even retain access to the Amazon app store if you have purchased apps from Amazon.
Just some thoughts to ponder.
I've had this problem for a while, wanted to see if anyone knew of say, a terminal command to run or something to run over ADB to get this issue to go away.
When I reboot the system, I get a lovely message:
"Optimizing system storage and applications... This will take approximately 10 minutes to complete."
This is very annoying and happens both on my newly-rooted and de-launcher'd HD6 and also happens on my HD7, every single time I want to turn it on.
Both of these are Ariel platform (2014).
Has anyone else experienced this? These are both running 5.1.2 (NOT 5.1.2.1) and are using Nova launcher, are rooted, and are gapps'd as well.

I would imagine every kindle does this just as my android phone does too. It's a normal part of the start up after the boot animation. My daughter's kindle does it as well. You could probably find and delete that animation, but then you will probably have a blank screen instead of that animation while your apps and drivers are starting up and being optimized.

you're not getting it, I want it to stop doing the optimization after every single reboot. it should be doing it only once in a while. on the HD6 I just rooted/gapps'd and de-amazon'd in the same fashion it does not do this on every boot, so something in a config file someplace is telling it to do it every reboot and it's getting on my nerves.
it just wastes time when everything is already "optimized" since the last bootup before that.
I'm no stranger to Android shenanigans and I know why it does it. the problem is it should not be doing it EVERY TIME.
