Signal strength questions. - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone.
I have my Z5C set to LTE(Preffered)/WCDMA/GMS.
I have very mixed signal strength when on this mode, but when I switch to GSM only, my signal is full. Does is work in such a way that when I drop LTE, I switch to GSM with a higher signal strenght? (I'm in a small town, I get about 11Mbps down / 13 up)

The way Sony display there signal strength is weird.I can swap my sim between my backup device and the z5c and the actual db is not far off but visual bars are usually one bar lower. I don't think I've ever seen it full signal actually..

I've noticed the same thing. I think it may just be that your LTE signal just isn't as good as your GSM signal. I keep mine set for WCDMA preferred for my best signal, figuring it is plenty fast enough and best for battery life.

Hm... good point. I think I'll go with that too.
Thanks a lot

Poor reception

Does anyone else experience a decrease in signal reception in their DUAL? I have a Nokia N95 8gb and I get a strong signal (5 bars) compared to 2 bars on the DUAL.
KS
As long as you can speak clear, I dont think there would be a problem. Probably the N95 shows full signal in areas where HTC can show 2bars but still take the full signal
The best way to test is by making a call in poor reception areas on both the devices and see which one works better or the same.
Regards,
Carty..
signal
i had that alot and i bought a signal booster from ebay which has made a diffrence it gives me two strong bars where befour i had one which came and went. they are only 2.00 and stick under the battery hope this may help.i am with orange and also have an n95 which has a good strong signal at home.
Goto>Settings>phone>band> then change from Auto to GSM in network type. It might help. soft reset.

yup, that helped me when i saw that on another thread. if you're not using the higher speed internet, it's a good tip
shame the "auto" is biased to faster data networks - i'd like to have it search for a more applicable signal only when you need a data connection

[Q] TMO GS5 LTE signal always low?

Does anyone else notice that the LTE signal on this phone always seems on the weak end? For example, with the T-Mobile cell site about 10 yards away, my LTE reception is -90-95dbm. When sitting that close with my AT&T iPhone 5 (work phone) the signal is about -75-80dbm. What gives? I also notice that the phone does hold onto weak LTE signals, but I am seeing weak LTE signal more often than not. I have seen a -115dbm-120dbm LTE signal. Yes, data still works, my only concern though is that the battery life is getting sucked out of my phone?
Running stock, T-Mobile also likes to show 5 bars for a -109dbm LTE signal. That couldn't be more of an exaggeration could it? Also in my tests, I have noticed if you set the phone to WCDMA only, the signal is a lot stronger.
Anyone care to comment on this?
No issues for me. Even in the factory that i work at i am getting 4G LTE over people with ATT and its quite strong. LTE Tower is a good distance away.
Have you rooted or flashed anything? If its 100 percent pure stock, ask for a replacement. Or even re-flash the latest update to see if that helps.
The only issue i have and others have is where the outgoing data arrow constantly lights up but no data is coming in. I think its a T-Mobile programming bug in 4.4.2 as the issue didn't exist in 4.3 on my S4.

Yes, but on average what is your dbm? Not going by bars.
T-Mobile also does not have a dense cell grid in my area which could be why. Already past the 14 day return window. Absolutely no device modification has even done.
I'm at full 5 bars on LTE 4G signal strength @ - 97 dBm

Appreciate the response. Been doing some research lately, and I think its because t-mobile doesn't have many sites in my area. I don't think their frequencies travel far either. Maybe I am wrong, but wouldn't this cause very low LTE signal?

If the towers are far from you, I would think that would cause a weak signal.
You can try this app.
It may help to see where the issue may be regarding towers, etc

That app just shows the -dBm as a widget. Anyone else notice a -109 or less signal showing 5 bars?

It does give you a more accurate signal bar strength indicator consisting of 14 bars and not 5 bars, as the stock indicator does. I'm at 11 bars.

Ahh. I will have to check the dbm. I don't get full signal but i get like 2 bars. Sometimes four depending where i sit. Then outside, i get full bars. I'll double check the dbm outside with full bars. It should be in and around the -90s.

[Q] Two phones on T-Mobile, but different signal strenght

Hi, everyone.
Could someone help me with the signal strength issue I'm having with one of my phones.
I currently have two I605.
One (white) is rooted with unlocked bootloader with latest CM11
The other (Grey) is rooted with locked bootloader on stock MJ9. (4.3)
I'm using both on Lycamobile on Tmobile network.
The white one is working well with the Lycamobile.
The signal strength is -69 dBm with 22 asu on HSADPA.
I see the network as Lycamobile.
However, my grey phone's signal strength is bad.
It's -90 dBM with 11 asu on HSPA.
THe network is listed as T-mobile on this phone.
The APN settings are exactly same.
The phones are next to each other in the same house.
I have never had problem with the WHITE one any where,
but the GREY one won't connect to the network intermittently
because of weak signal strength outside. I'm not talking about the data.
The phone simply doesn't call or receive calls.
I'm wondering if there's a setting that I should be touching additionally
to unleash or unlock more bands in this GREY phone.
I'd appreciate any insight.
Thanks.

Aosp roms more accurately read the signal strength. The tw rom is reading lower but it just not as accurate at displaying the correct signal strength. It is strictly visual though. This is perfectly normal. Neither phone has to something wrong with it.

Hey, Thanks for the reply.
I'm not talking about the signal antenna icon.
I know that one is strictly for visual. Some shows Full Bar even when it's -100 while some shows 2 bars for the same condition.
Are you saying that even the signal strength reading in dBm is strictly visual as well?
Because I used various signal strength apps and they all show poor strengths in the "poor" note 2.
And I'm curious why there's a discrepancy of showing HSPA vs HSDPA, and Tmobile vs Lycamobile
when I'm using same phone, same cell tower, same service.

Yes it's visual in there as well. Aosp is supposed to read more accurately.I just heard time and time again not to focus so much on those numbers as tw has just as good of signal strength as aosp it just doesn't look like it visually.

Terrible data strength: All locations, inside & outside

Little over 2 weeks with the G3 and I love the device with zero issues besides the very poor data signal strength. dBM rarely breaks into the 90's.
I pretty much get a poor signal all across Kansas City. Work, home and travel between 6 cities to and from signal strength is the same. I always have a working connection but the strength is just not there. My bars always show zero or the itty bitty one bar......but everything works, decently fast and operating.
My old S3 on Carbon and my wifes stock S3 always showed good strength, showed 10dBM less than my G3. Is this just how the G3's radio is setup? On PRL 51102, I may try changing the PRL to see if it helps.

Something should be wrong with your phone. Go back to Lg and replace it. Cause, this phone is best by far i have ever used. I have used samsung Note 2 , 3 S4, s5, G2, G1,S2,S3. And this phone easily is on top for data
Given that you're in Sprint's backyard, I would think the signal strength, both 3G and LTE, would be quite strong across the KCMO region.
Out of curiosity.. Under Settings -> Wireless Networks (More) -> Network (Mobile Networks) -- What is Network Mode set to? Global? LTE/CDMA? If Global, change to LTE/CDMA and see if you see an improvement.
Also, for point of reference, my indoor signal strength at work shows -94 dBm on eHRPD (3G) connection. Fluctuates between 3 and 4 bars. Not sure how that dBm measurement would translate to LTE frequency bands, but I would think it should be similar.
Have you done a speed test to get an idea what kind of bandwidth your device is capable of even with what's perceived to be a weak signal?

One would think yes, being a KC resident home of Sprint I would get great service. In most cases I do.
It's been on LTE/CDMA and global. I haven't noticed if one is better than the other. Maybe a better handoff between 3G and Spark on Global. Update: Just got back from a local Sprint store and talked to a very knowledgeable Technician who has has first hand experience on all LG devices that their signal is like this across the board. Lower signal and dBM compared to HTC, Samsung or Motorola but still get great speeds.
I've done speed tests at the same time I noticed poor strength and actually surprised that despite the signal I get the same speeds as if I had better signal (lower dBM)

I noticed low signal strength on the LTE frequency(the one showing in signal bars by default) from the beginning but it doesn't affect my speeds so I'm not complaining.
Does band 41 show a different logo for spark? I have never had spark, but s3 didn't have have tri-band, so it's possible you are on b41, and it has decent enough strength, so it just stays with b41. I Can keep b25 LTE down to around -117 db. You can check which band you are on with ##3282# and click lte, then view.
Sent from my LGLS990 using XDA Free mobile app
Currently enabled bands are 26 and 41

1=25
2=26
3=41

[HALP] How to switch to a particular network

I'm on MIUI dev. At my place the Jio service is pretty poor. I get the max. speed of 100KBps throughout the day, and only during the nights I am able to reach upto 3or4MBps.
But, what I've seen is that sometimes in between, my cell connects to some other Cell Tower (Jio's only). I can tell you this because the network strength is always full at my place but when it gets switched to the other Tower's signal, the strength is around 40-50%. And, suddenly the speed gets boosted upto 2MBps from 100KBps, for the brief 10secs. Then again the network strength goes full and the speed comes back to its normal.
So, what I think, is that there's another cell tower which is farther then this one but has less no. of users and hence better speeds.
So, is there anyway that I can switch to that network permanently. I've read about setting the phone's modem to a particular freq..
So, guys tell me what I can do.
TL; DR How can I use the other cell tower of my network which has better internet speeds but has weaker network strength.

Tested it. Works as it says, but the speed is still same. Hell, Im getting speed around 100kbps+ on Band 5, while on Band40 the speed is around 60kbps. Although the network strength is full in both bands.
Anyway, thanks for your reply. It must be problem with Jio services only.
