LG G5 Battery drain. - AT&T LG G5 Questions & Answers

Have my G5 for a few days now and I absolutely love it. The only issue I have is with the battery drain overnight. I charge my phone to 100% then unplug it and leave it overnight, when I wake up in the morning, usually 7 hours later, the battery drops down to around 70%. Any ideas why this happens? Is anyone else experiencing these results? Anyhe help would be greatly appreciated.

Well that is a pretty noticeable drop check your battery stats to see what is draining it, but it does not sound normal at all

Thanks. I'm getting a wakelock detector and then check it out.

If not you are still withing the 14 days trial period you can change it for a new one
Sent from my LG-H820 using XDA-Developers mobile app

I am actually. I might do just that, just hate returning phones because of the whole set up process again. Guess I have no choice though.
Thanks again.

Here is the current usage
Sent from my LG-H820 using XDA-Developers mobile app

Sorry to hear that. I charge mine to 100% at around 12 to 1 am, wake up at at 10-11am, 93% remaining. About 7% loss on standby. Yours definitely has a problem

Here's current usage. I'll post standy tomorrow after one full drain and charge cycle. Good luck !

I reduced my battery usage by going to settings->general->apps and disabling or stopping "peaking" on many of the bloatware apps included on the phone.

Hey how do you keep it at such low drain even with NFC bluetooth and everything enabled ? A full charge only gets me like 30+h on standby

I dont really know but that's what it said but i wont take the estimate as a given since your phone may have had more notifications and other stuff in the backgroud waking it so maybe if left longer the estimate will go higher maybe.

Damn ... I'm hoping I didn't fry my battery already just few weeks into it. By the way I take my phone to the shower sometimes, do you think steam from hot water will affect phone battery life etc ?

Hum i don't think the steam will affect it, the moisture might affect other stuff but i dont think so cause i do the same sometimes hahahaha sooo check by doing a factory reset if not i would go into getting a replacement, i would say that maybe you can test with another battery but since lg hasn't shipped their preorder bonus then all i can recommend are those options

Does anybody experience slight increase in phone temp (as in while you're holding it you feel heat) when using snapchat or playing some games/cpu/gpu intensive apps ? I feel some heat but I just wanna make sure whether it's normal because of metallic body or defective battery.

Well since i use a case i don't feel any heat but i would say it has to heat up a bit for intensive task but not so much that it will burn your hand or is uncomfortable to hold i think

Anyone was able to solve this? I have the same issue.

You probably need to download a wakelock detector and see what is keeping your phone woke. Mine barely uses battery in standby. Many apps especially social media apps will keep waking the phone to update, you may want to check the settings on some of your apps to see if they are updating constantly.
The system apps that you can't remove that you are not using should be disabled. They can cause wakelocks.
Uninstall apps you are not using, they can use themselves even though you don't use them.
Download Greenify (or similar app) and enable Aggressive Doze and Doze on the Go and also set a shortcut to force hibernate your apps. This works fine without root and it can help prolong your battery life.
Also turn off radios you don't need. Those will search from time to time which can also use a lot of battery.
Another fix is to factory reset your phone and set it up again and only install apps you need and use.
Hope that helps.

I tried that with no luck theres something wrong with my phone sometimes it reaches 96 % of the time without deep sleep. I dont know i dont live in usa so i dont have warranty. Ill just try to reflash.

90% battery after 12.5hrs!
I keep all the radios on (4G, 3G, wifi, bluetooth, gps) and brightness set to auto.
...
I couldn't do a screen shot from the phone cuz no root yet
Manl, that's insane how efficient the new dual cores are!
Only if you dont use the phone. Hence your display percentage so low. Mine went about 12.5 hours on battery with the display on for 3h total
That is one thing that I don't understand about this phone. Sometimes, i'll pull it off the charger and not touch it for 12 hours and the battery will still be in the 90's like you see above. Other times, i'll pull it off the charger and not touch it and it will just slowly drain and be into the 60's or 70's after 12 hours (and it's still sleeping). Don't get it. Signal is always good here too.
I get about 3 hours of battery, and I don't even use it for calls really.

curious too, currently using the simi clock battery. Fan of that, but having one in the top bar would be cool...
After 7 or 8 hours I hit about 20-25%. With Juice Defender Ultimate I get about an hour more of battery. But thats still not enough for me hah.

I know why my battery life sucks. I use it way too much... Lol... Underclocking to 685mhz works pretty well and the phone isn't all that laggy. It is definitely bearable.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
The only days I get battery life anywhere close to that are the days that I am super busy and just don't touch my phone, except to answer a call or text. Days where I have too much time, I'll constantly be on my phone playing games, researching things, youtubing stuff, listening to music, and on those days I'll get 9-12 hours, which is still good in my book. It'll easily go over a day with very light usage. I can leave it off the charger at 100% over night, and it'll be at 97% or so when I wake up, but as soon as I get on that XDA app for 20 minutes I'll be down to 75%, lol. It's ironic that the XDA app is such a major battery drain, and that is one of the apps that I use the most.

If you get '3 hours of battery and don't use it for calls' then you either have a defective phone or lying. I do vallet and play Video's all day work 5PM-4AM and I never have to charge my phone although close to dead by the time I leave. 3 hours? I don't think so.
Fact 1: 9 times out of 10, if you don't use your phone at all, the battery will barely drain.
Fact 2: If you were to actually pick up and use the phone, you wouldn't get nearly as long out of the battery.
That's something that baffles me about people and keeping track of battery usage. They leave their phone sitting there over night and all day without touching it, and then have kittens when the battery percentage barely goes down. Well.. newsflash, that will happen if you don't use the phone at all. I guarantee that if you were to use the phone for any length of time the battery would drain a lot faster than that. So that isn't an accurate indicator of the phone's battery life.

Charging issues with hot battery

With this hot weather, my battery temp got to 53C. Even plugged in and saying charging, the battery still drained to 0. When home, the battery down to 34 it resumed charging. Any insight into this?

I live in a fairly cool place and mine gets up to 45 when charging. I suggest take all cases off and charge the phone near a fan or AC. If you cant leave it on a cool metal ssurface screen down and it should help also avoid using the phone while charging as it gets even hotter, maybe charge it overnight. its not your phones problem its just u live in a hot place.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Sounds like you have a process running in the background that is using up a lot of CPU cycles, causing the battery to drain at the same rate as it is charging. Then after doing this long enough, the battery gets hot and the overtemperature protection kicks in. I recommend checking which process is chewing up CPU cycles. You can use OS monitor to check in real time when it happens again.
I never had the.problem with my htc desire in similar heat. This has been the hottest day in 20 years so I'll see what happens tomorrow. Thanks all for your input.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I don't think the issue is caused by environment temperature. It is more of a charge/discharge issue where heat is generated from the inside of the phone from being overworked.
It can usually be solved by restarting the phone. Those running process would generally get killed. Then, start to charge your phone as usual.
Kinda rabdom but my batter just went to 67 C!!! It didnt let me charge!

Hi. I searched the forum for this problem. Experienced exactly the same thing. Just got an GSII three days ago. Experienced this a problem few minutes ago. Started charging my phone when I got home. It was at 36% at 46deg c. Then I talked to my friend on the phone. Checked back 30 mins later and it was at 33% at 53 deg c. It was the hottest the phone was ever. I panicked and unplugged it and shut the phone down. Turned it on 5 mins later and I just plugged it now.
Is my unit faulty?

BMS (Battery Management System) will not allow you to damage the battery by stopping you from recharging the battery at around 51 degree Celsius.

I had this problem with one of ours (I bought 2 on the same day). Everyone told me it was apps etc., but they were identically configured and only one had the problem. After the 3rd time in 4 days when it did it (twice on charge and once when it wasn't on charge) I returned the phone, Samsung tested it and gave me a new one which is just fine. I believe it is a known but not well advertised fault - I've seen a few people with the problem posting on forums. In every case Samsung has given them a new phone and this has fixed the problem.
The phone runs red hot (too hot to hold for more than a few seconds) and sucks the life out of the battery even if it is charging - can drop from 75-80% to 15% in a few minutes.

4.1.2 and S3 battery life is getting worse

Viber is known to keeping phone awake by invoking mediaserver to keep scanning for files in phone, not just that, it will keep wifi on all the time. You need to go to the setting inside the viber app to turn it off and remember to log out of the app after using it. My recommend is remove viber completely.

This is not about 4.1.2 but about my phone in general. i put the software on there just so people know.
Also it wont charge to 100% no matter what i do both my batteries only charge now to 96% and 93% i think they are both deteriorating.
i think my battery drain has to do with Google now. i have turned it off to see the difference
I have fast dormacy on, wifi set to static and network to gsm for best results
Some networks don't have fast dormacy though so download the fast dormacy app and an app called network signal info and try different settings.
Bad signal and wrong settings is cause of most battery loss
When charging it's best to kill tasks with task killer

why blaming on 4.1.2 LEAK JellyBean when it self haven't officially announce.. can't wait to complain until it finalize?
online apps + 3G/mobile data = battery drain, because most online required apps have permission to use mobile data anytime, anywhere, unless we switch of the mobile data..

This kind of apps is a waste of time. I tried a lot when I first bought my S2 SHV-E120 HD and finally this kind of apps end-up taking more battery to save battery, it doesn't work.
Plus these apps that kills apps to save battery also end-up by your phone working all the time to restart those killed apps. Not good.
Use Gsam battery monitor to find which app takes your juice and take Titanium backup to FREEZE these apps and the one you never use.
Yes, Don't waste money on such apps. Better get tasker and use it to configure phone as per your requirement.

Plus these apps that kills apps to save battery also end-up by your phone working all the time to restart those killed apps. Not good.
Use Gsam battery monitor to find which app takes your juice and take Titanium backup to FREEZE these apps and the one you never use.

Juicedefender doesn't actually kill apps to save power. It doesn't actually touch your running apps at all
It disables networking (it enables networking periodically so email and whatnot can update) when screen off and (in paid versions) underclocks idle clock speed

Jd is great. It really saves bateu by turning all your radios off and underclocking. The radio off saves the higher amount of battery. The bad thing about that is not receiving whatsapp messages high away. You can set the sync time every couple of minutes, but the use of battery will increase too.
Also would make a little harder to use a tracing software in case you get robbed. Cerberus can work with it, but as far as I know he is the only one.
Since I bought my second battery, I don't worry about power anymore so I have up on Cerberus.

You don't need an app to turn off your radios. And why are you buying a quad core phone if it's to underclock it. It's like putting 6 inches wheels on a Ferrari to save gaz.
Here is an idea, turn your Power Saving mode ON, turn OFF GPS-Bluetooth- synch and set your phone on Airplane mode and never turn on the screen. The battery will last 3 days and you will have a nice 500$ paper weight.

Totally agree.
You can set everything through settings. I've tried so many and all give problems.
One common problem is they turn off things that you might want to use and then you wonder why this or this feature doesn't work.
I can't help it. Hijack coming up.
Well, I can't vouch for JD, though I do understand, it can have a positive impact if you absolutely know what your doing. It takes experimenting to get it just right.
But anyway,
I revisited a similar but far simpler app named Green Power.
I use it to disable wifi/data 20 secs after the screen turns off since I do not care for PUSH messages etc.
GP turns wifi/data back on after I unlock my screen (or when I am on power)...and on the S3, there is virtually no waiting or interruption before you can start surfing etc. This...I do to gain max battery saving in standby. (without switching to AP mode)
I spent several years experimenting with battery savings including using Tasker. I can tell you quickly here that standby drain went from 1% - 1.5% per hour or more...down to .5% or less. Main juice sucking culprits are wifi/data tx/rx, and apps like Maps/Location/Push/sync all that stuff. It works and I can repeatedly prove it...and like I said, Green Power is simpler. Juice Defender can do the same or better but used incorrectly, can do more harm than good.
I uninstall this app because i have not seen any difference ...
I have battery killers like Facebook installed, maps running (Location updates off of course) and whatsapp sending push messages all day. Can easily use the screen for over 4 hours over a 24 hour period which normally includes playing Dead Trigger (Which kills the battery like crazy) or Punch Hero. No need to constantly turn off my data. I leave GPS on too, the only app that is allowed to use the GPS is Maps & Bus Checker. Simply leaving it turned on whilst no app is searching for your location is as good as turning it off. Of course if you have a rogue app constantly polling for your position, having GPS turned on will drain the battery
What options of gps settings needs to be enabled?

I agree with themadproducer, jd if set up right is a good app, the same with green power
Juice Defender is useless since Android 2.2.1 and higher. On Android 2.1 it was GODLY. I recommend you to not use this app anymore, better do it yourself and it will save you alot of memory and battery.

U should reset ur phone. G2 battery is very awesome. I turn on everything 3g, WiFi, sync, Facebook, viber, ... And I use my phone to read news whenever I have time, so my screen time on of my phone one day is usually 4 hours. Everyday I get home with approx 40% of battery. But one thing I recommend u is u should buy the app lux auto brightness replace for stock auto brightness. I was really surprise after I installed that app, it save for my about one hour screen time.

Download "Better Battery Stats" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.betterbatterystats&hl=en
Take a look at the wakelocks, alarms and see what is keeping your phone awake.
Also , posting a screenshot of your battery life graph would be beneficial.
Cheers !
Edit: Agree with quachhanthanh about Lux Auto Brightness. Totally worth the money , even though the free app does its job admirably.
Ah good idea with lux auto brightness.
I will test this too.
The stock auto brightness never works good on my phone.

Ah ok thank you , could have known that myself
It really helps to know the stats to start. A rogue app or service can cause a lot of issues. I had a contact sync issue that drained my battery quickly. Found and fixed.
I use greenify(really good for battery life) and also under google settings, I mean the app you have called google settings, uncheck all those things you dont need including under Android Device Manager -> Remotely locate this device. I disabled alot of things in there. If you need to leave wifi on you can also change your wifi scan intervals to like 360 in the build.prop. Thats just for starters.
Great battery here!
As has been said, a battery graph will help out a great deal. If you have a rogue app, it will show a higher percentage of usage than other similar apps. If services really high, you might want to take a look at exactly which services are running. Be sure to always disable any you don't actually use. Also make sure your screen is set to turn off quickly, or use that nifty knock off feature. One last thing, if you are in a spotty coverage area, your radio will broadcast at maximum power trying to find a tower. That searching will kill any battery.

I'm getting horrible battery life.. About 2.5 hours screen time with 45% left. Screen has only used 20% of the battery.. its mostly being used up by Android System (33%) and Android OS(13%). I've got wakelock detector installed and its saying most of the time my phone is in deep sleep... God know's what's the issue.
P.S: I'm even using DS Battery Saver to force deep sleep... I really don't know why the OS and system are using so much battery!
P.S: Using better battery stats, it seems I'm having the activity manager causing wakelocks and the alarm rtc and powermanager service causing wakelocks... anyone has any idea how to stop this?
Almost 40hr with 4.35hr of screen time and still 38% left.
What can i say. I am happy
in two days and im with 20% , is that good or bad?
with normal use

Depends on what you do with the phone. I can drop 20% in like 3hrs easily using spotify alone.
At the moment im at 37h 12m with 3h 8m screen on. Im at 40%.
Here are my stats. I wonder why there's such a variance between different phones. Do LG source batteries from many different manufacturers? Maybe they don't do enough QA on the batteries? Battery life for me isn't terrible compared to other Android phones I've used (many won't even last a day), but I definitely need to charge it every night.

Useless, can't see your app usage.
I recommend posting in the comparative battery analysis thread.
Make sure you post all screen shots otherwise OP will be on your case.

edit: in the screenshot, you can see thats in charging, thats because to get the screenies, i need to plug my phone to the charger to boot it up haha
