Hello,
i would like to watch some maxdome, netflix etc. films and series in a place, we haven't got internet. Because you can't download videos for offline using on pc, I thought i can install Remix OS on a external Harddrive, install apps like maxdome to download films at home and watch it offline. It works, but you only have nearly 4 gb internal storage on this operating system. I found a tutorial on how to increase the internal storage, but this only works on harddrives formatted to NTFS. And you can't install Remix OS on a NTFS formatted external harddrive, can you?. Is there any way to increase the internal storage on FAT32? Will the developers of Remix OS increase the internal storage in the future?(Because it's only Alpha so far) Another problem is, that when i when I connect the laptop to the TV with HDMI, it only transfers the video, but no audio. Will this be fixed in the future?

I am trying to find a way to increase the "data.img" file that is generated on the USB stick... If I can't figure it how, the only option is installing on the HD and make the tuto's.
And I think its possible to install on an external drive and use the whole space. Gonna figure it out how 4 us, okay? \õ/
I think that the HDMI problem will be solved on the next updates. Anyway, its still on Alpha...
While its not solved, we can always use an P2-P2 audio cable ... haha.
The FAT32 file system has a limitation of 4GB files. There's no way to have a bigger data.img without making your flash drive NTFS

Hey
After a while searching and studying about this, I realised that I couldn't make it on the pendrive.
BUT
i successfully installed the OS on my SSD ( OMG, such fast booting ). I split my SSD, formatted to EXT4 and installed, and BOOM! 12 gigs of internal storage.
What does it mean? It means that you can install on a flash drive, such as USB stick or External HD, formatting as EXT4 partition, and run from there.
I'll make some tutos ASAP, teaching how to make those tricky stuff.

I think you can't.
But, you can install on another USB Stick.
This weekend is "Carnaval" in Brazil (National Holiday). I'll try to make one video explaining 4 u, okay?
[EDIT] Sorry, I'm gonna be a little busy this weekend. What you can do at all is to install the iso normally in a USB Stick, run it with the "INSTALL=1" parameter, format another USB with EXT4 and install it on the stick. You should get it with the internal storage as the size as the USB stick.
I didn't tried it yet, but its a possibility.
Let me know if you're gonna do this.

Just install normally the ISO on a USB sitck and boot it normally. When it appears for you select on the both modes ( resident and some other ), you press "E" on your keyboard, to edit the command line. There, you put INSTALL=1 parameter. Then , you'll install it normally, just selecting the right stick.

You just have to install GRUB bootloader when it asks you, the other questions you can skip. Then it works!

Will it install grub to the USB. I dont want to overwrite grub on my HDD. Currently I have managed to have a USB formated with ext4 and swap, and was able to use unetbootin to put install files on. I dont use the install option as I havent used the two usb as you have here. I do have a full install on my internal ssd and have 56 gb to play with but would like to have a usb that can boot on any computer with the ability to access more than 4gb. I have tried a few ways and if it doesnt mess with the bootloader on my ssd then id be happy to know that.

I discovered somethings with my notebook. Its an Asus X550LN, and the BIOS is as secure as hell. So, I had to search on the partitions created the GRUB that the installer says it was installed. And my BIOS just read one type of File System ( I don't remember it right now, but its the one that Windows uses, not Ubuntu ). When I found the GRUB bootloader on another partition, i just copied the files from one partition to another, added a boot option for it to reach the bootloader and BOOM, "chooseable dual-booted". Yeah, its hard because I have to enter in the BIOS everytime I want the other OS, but its a step. LoL.
Anyway, I think you should try to make a 400MB Partition to install the bootloader on the stick, and the space left just format as ext4 and install the RemixOS there.
Yeah... I don't know if you understand what I'm saying.... It can be confusing, but its perfectly clear on my mind. :silly:
I really need to make a video explaining everything... ASAP.

I can dual boot etc. I can do this through Ubuntu by editing the grub command, I have not tried using the REMIX bootloader because it will overwrite the one I am currently using. I have managed to have dual partitions on my stick, but alas cannot boot to the partition needed. Do you have any idea how to edit the lines for booting to the ext 4 on the stick? Its a little different than my Ubuntu grub edit and it just wonte see the secondary partition. Install went fine i look at the files and it's all there just cant figure out hot to edit the current boot config to boot proper -partition.

wow... I had to mount the partitions manually on Ubuntu on the terminal ( like "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/tempsda1" ). you should try somethings like that... just listing the partitions on all drives.

Hi fleflis thanks for sharing your discoveries, so to make a bootable remix os usb stick that has more than 4gb internal android space is it difficult? im a total noob and i would like to know a step by step turtorial on how to do this. If you would be kind enough to tell me? i dont have ubuntu/linux only windows and android and i would like to use my 128gb usb 3.0 stick to boot android. I have a lenovo Z570 laptop running win 10 right now. It does not have a usb 3.0 port, however after reading posts here on this forum, I believe that it is not an issue for installing Remix OS.( It lags and all, but....)
The issue I am facing is,
I have downloaded the legacy version of the Remix OS image from the official website. I installed it in a USB stick ( 8 GB, formatted to FAT32) and a memory card ( 16GB, Formatted to FAT32). I used the Remix tool and I also tried the unetbootin tool as well.
Both the remix usb tool and the unetbootin installs the OS in the drive, but when I go to my BIOS, it doesnt show that drive at all. I wonder what I am doing wrong, because I am very familiar with OS and BIOS and have used USB booting to install windows in the same PC before.
Any help? I really wanna try and see the Remix OS before I partition my HDD for a dual boot setup.

Making a partition and dual booting is much more simpler than playing around with the pendrives. Use the install to hard disk option. Its much better.

LOL, that is exactly what i m trying to do right now. My HDD is showing only 4 GB shrink space. will that be enough for an install?

Nope. It clearly says 8gb minimum. Reading is a skill, not an art. Maybe you should try it sometimes.

BTW, i was just wondering if that is a possibility. If u have ever played a game, u must have heard of min sys requirements. Sometimes we can go wayyyyy below them and still run it. + xda is all about workarounds and doing things that would look not possible .

You can run remix os on 4gb buy you will barely have any space i believe the OS takes 3.6 gb and if I'm not mistaken your 4gb open fine should only have around 3.8 gb free

I understand how to install Remix onto a bootable USB flash drive. I understand how to format a partition on an existing HDD to dual boot between Windows and Remix.
However, I can not seem to figure out how to install Remix onto a separate HDD from the one that the current OS is on, in order to be put into a separate computer. Basically, I have an old Dell Mini 10 and I want to install Remix OS onto the 120GB HDD, but I do not need any other operating system on it. Is this possible?
If so, how can I deviate from the procedure to install Remix onto a HDD partition that is meant to be stand-alone, not dual boot? I can't be the only person who is trying to do this.
Now you have to make the same installation as Remix os on Virtual machine
Put remix os on bootable usb as usual use official installer when you done restart and boot to remix os
at boot menu press TAP at debug mode
now you modify the command
at the end of the first line make space and insert INSTALL=1 and press F10
now you will create boot partition ext4 GPT/UEFI or MBR and make it bootable

now if you on MBR choose install grub if UEFI skip and install the next grub/UEFI

this method wont create data.img but data folder
make sure you create bootable ext4 partition EFI or mbr up to your bios

It IS indeed possible, and I have accomplished it on my secondary laptop (Read HERE for how I did it).
@imadlatch The GRUB/GRUB2 install didn't work in my case. I tried the GRUB first, as I'm on a legacy BIOS, and although it did say "Installation Successful", upon reboot, I was greeted with a very nice "OS Not Found" Message. The same happened for GRUB2. So I just went ahead and got an Ubuntu Live USB, and installed the latest GRUB2-Legacy from there. Edited the grub.cfg and everything worked perfectly. 320GB HDD, all for Remix OS. Persistent data, rooted, everything.
@TwistyTravster Did you remove the "CREATE_DATA_IMG=1" from the command line, or just add the "INSTALL=1"? If you didn't remove the data image part, then you should (according to my tests) only have a 4GB /data partition... Or did it allocate the WHOLE HDD? Just interested in seeing how other people with different setups got Remix OS working...

I just added INSTALL=1 to the end. And yes, I ended up with only 4GB data partition, but I then removed the drive from my netbook, mounted it on my main PC and performed the IMGTools mod to increase data.img file size from 4GB to 256GB of the total 320GB on the harddrive I used. The process took about an hour to complete due to the extremely large size that I was enlarging data.img to. You use the number 274877906944 bytes for the command for 256GB. Considering how well this worked, I bet you could enlarge data.img to literally ANY size... probably larger than you'll ever need. Just imagine a total of 1TB space on Remix OS.... LOL!
The biggest problem I'm having is my old netbook doesn't have the graphics capability for h.264 decoding. So I'm getting a Broadcom Crystal HD decoder for the internal mini PCI-E slot, which should allow better 1080p streaming for movies. I plan to use Moonlight Streaming to stream full quality games from my main Gaming PC to my tiny netbook. It will be pretty hilarious seeing a 10" netbook playing games like Crysis in 1080p (probably downscaled to 720p) at 60fps.
I already have a Mad Catz MOJO in my living room that I stream games and movies to, which has been modded to use Remix 2.0 OS as well.

Well, if you feel the need to reinstall, then just remove the CREATE_DATA_IMG=1 - it'll use a folder on your HDD called "data" instead. That is, assuming you formatted to ext4 for the R/W /system... I don't know if the same works on Windows...
Now there's something I would LOVE to see! A 10 inch netbook playing games that aren't Minecraft!!!
I'm using my Secondary Laptop (Toshiba Satellite C660) as an Android PC with Remix at the moment, and that thing RUNS! I think the only thing limiting it is the slow internet at my university...
Anyways, please report back on the games, as I might use that myself...
P.S. It took 5 Minutes to install Remix on my Toshiba when I didn't do the data.img, so I would recommend using it that way...

So remove CREATE_DATA_IMG=1, and it automatically uses the entire HDD storage instead of only 4GB, as long as it it formatted to EX4? Is that what I'm understanding?
have followed the procedure but i still cannot boot from hdd. my hardware is T61 with 4G RAM, 500G HDD (yes bios not uefi). just a blank screen after bios cannot boot up. any hint?
possible failed to create a bootable ext4 under cgdisk 1.0.0? must use ext4?
Use gparted to create ext4 partition and make USB ready for remix os install then add this to menu.lst
(Unetbootin will do fine)

after you press tab on resident mode, remove everything after "quiet". Then put INSTALL=0 right after quiet and you can install on ext4. if you don't do this, it adds a line in grub that says "USB_USE_DATA=1" which causes the screen to get stuck at the flashing remix screen.
I have a solution with boot error
To install Remix OS directly on HDD without dualboot :
First, to prepare bootloader, install Ubuntu from USB or DVD that format all drive in EXT4.
Once Ubuntu is installed put remix OS usb key which have been prepared and reboot on USB Key.
Install as arts821 says (Thanks arts821)

it work also with one hdd but if your windows is not installed with efi before ,and remove your hdd windows before to install os remix like here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaLbOek1X-g
you dont need to do your partition like me with windows if u have only one hdd remove your hdd windows create one partition primary( 1 )having like 500 mo with os remix and after your partition primary bootable os remix choose yes also all time like me when you choose to format the partition os remix in ext 4 like that it will not found your partition windows ,because your hdd windows is not plug in .
after you need to disable efi for boot on windows or efi enable for boot on os remix
(but sorry u don't need to remove ur hdd really because you can take grub 2 only for efi and skip the grub only not efi during installation...normally it take all time the one like sda1 for her boot efi
and it work well for me because i've windows 7 now + os remix x64 on my ssd , and i've reinstall os remix taking grub 2 efi only and it have not touched my boot windows not efi working only if you have before create a partition 1 for os remix boot efi keeping the 2 for windows not efi
i've try on the pc of my friend a dual boot os remix x64 not efi with windows 7 it work ...it can be windows 10 the problem or my motherboard i'm not sure i will try

but i prefer boot os remix efi enabled only because i can touch the grub easily
I dont know what i am doing wrong. I have followed every step carefully still when i select usb option in boot menu it says " missing operating system_". nobody have this issue. my pendrive is sandisk ultra 32GB usb 3.0. please someone help if some have faced such issue.

Hi all, using a Samsung ativ pc pro xe700t1c-a04uk
dual boot: Windows 10 pro / android remix os 3.0
screen 11.6 full hd 1080p
cpu intel core i5-3317u quad core
ram 4gb
gpu intel hd 4000 (128mb dedicated)
hdd 256gb msata ssd
I run remix os 3.0 from a 64GB 544/MBs msata drive in a usb 3.0 enclosure.
Very fast system. Everything working including apps and games and all hardware (touchpen/touchscreen/gyro/accele/light/nfc/otg/gamepad/cam/mic/sound/gfx/etc).
Problem: Its not a major problem but the screen dimming or brightness control dosent work and thats the only problem.
The samsung ative pc pro xe700t1c is by far the most superior convertible laptop/tablet in the world!
Request to developers:
Can you please implement the sim function for internet and calling. Also can you please implement a gamepad configuration menu just like the keyboard config menu?

hi all i thought this turorial might help you guys....
This is a working usb install media creator method for os remix installation and legacy bios circumventing all known errors made for noobs including USING full drive internal storage space etc.
You will be able to use this usb stick for future creation of other usb install media
you will have the choice to also install to hard drive
you will need 2 x usb drives and require drive write speed to be higher than 10 mb/s
the first drive will be the installer drive and the second will be the actual usb drive used to run remix os.
For first drive basic fat 32 install you will need rufus 2.9 usb boot media creator
after creation of the installer drive keep it safe i reccommend you use a 4gb drive $4/£2 off ebay but get something thats got a write speed higher than 10 mb/s or else install will fail!
Format the second drive to your liking ext 4 for example on your pc with minitool partition or acronis disk manager (make sure the drive is formatted as primary and set to active flag)
1. Create fat 32 usb boot disk with first usb drive and rufus 2.9 and the remix os iso
2.make sure after creation you boot up the usb drive and enter remix os then shutdown and boot up again to write the config files
3.make sure you dont boot up the ufi version of the boot up, only use the legacy version (it will have ufi next to boot drive in bios usb boot up list)
4.after you enter remix os go to settings and download the update (ota) (this is the main fix)(if this update fails you cannot proceed further with instructions)(DOSENT APPLY TO REMIX OS 3.0+ INSTALLATION)
5. After ota update reboot and enter remix os again and let android upgrade
6.after this stage is complete your fat32 remix os usb bootable drive is ready to create a usb drive that runs remix os from the drive itself.
7.insert the second drive in a usb hub and boot up the computer with both drives in the computer and boot from the first drive (the usb remix os installer drive)
8.boot up and at the grub boot menu (it should look blue with yellow writing not the black ufi version) press tab and type: INSTALL=1
9. then press enter then you will enter usb media creation menu select scan usb drives and select the second drive (the remix os running drive)
10. It will ask you what you want to format the drive as so select do not format option (becus you already formatted it)
11.then it will ask you to install first grub boot menu say yes
12. Then it will ask you to install second boot grub efi menu say yes
13. Next it will ask you if you want to format the boot partition or something like that say *** no ***
14. Then it will ask you if you want read/write privelage say yes
15. It will proceed to write the remix os onto the drive
16. When finished it will ask to restart (at this point i just switch the pc off by holding power button then restart and boot off the new second drive to run the os from it already upgraded too)
note: If wanting ntfs version of remix os then its a little complicated than this and you will need to use imgtools to increase the data.img file on the ntfs drive after creation with the first usb media creator drive.
The remix os ota update addresses the boot media creation errors. After the ota update all drives created with the grub menu installer boot up as they should but only ufi boot up option hangs!

I have the ativ pc pro xe700t1c the uk version with intel core i5 quad core and its also a convertible tablet with msata ssd as hdd drive and as you all probbaly know android was created for fast flash memory and linux format os so the best combination is an ssd and ext4 linux file format. I have a 64gb 544 mb/s msata drive in a usb 3.0 enclosure which i use to boot remix os and run it off it. Its perfectly smooth and fast enough 5 secs to boot and the ativ pc pro convertible laptop/tablet is fully compatible hadware software wise, no problems at all. The 5 year old Ativ pc pro gets 119,000+ score in antutu benchmark same as the latest LG G5 with the latest adreno 530 gpu/snapdragon 820 cpu which costs approx £600 now in retail!!! I bought the Ativ pc pro convertible laptop/tablet for only £200 two weeks ago with accessories (ethernet dock etc) worth alone £100 on its own off ebay!!! On top of all that its also a windows 10 pro convertible laptop/tablet system which on its own without android was initially worth £1200 five years ago and still costing approx £500 even now in retail. So what im trying to say here is that for only £200 i get a £600 android 6.0 laptop/tablet and i also get a £500 windows 10 pro laptop tablet ALL IN ONE. Muahahahahahaha haaaaa hahahaha kekekeke.

pull the usb out and reboot or reboot and select hard with windows on as boot drive.

i select the HDD but then windows boot manager opens...and ther is no windows 10 option only remix os

I think you did wrong this step:
"13. Next it will ask you if you want to format the boot partition or something like that say *** no ***"
if that was your mistake its not bad,there are few ways to get back your windows bootloader. not sure but if you repeat the steps 7-16 maybe at step 13 you'll get windows in grub bootlist...not sure about this, but you can try...nothing to lose.

it didn't happed while following this tutorial....
i was trying to setup a dual boot using easyBCD. I ended up with one option in windows boot manager that is remix os. Remix os is also not booting. help me getting that windows 10 option back...

I have a 64bit hp chromebox that has 4gb of ram that I was using as a standalone for openeleq. I switched that to win 10 which ran pretty much perfect with a Bluetooth speaker attached. I have since come across remix os which I ran alongside win 10 on a separate partition that worked fine also. What I want to know is can I install remix os directly to my chromebox ssd as s standalone os that just boots directly into remix os with no windows or anything. I have purchased a little external enclosure for the m2 ssd and had it hooked to my pc last night. I formatted it to fat 32 then ran the remix os install tool and installed it to hard drive (my chromebox ssd). Anyway after install I slipped it back into my chromebox but it won't boot. I get an error at the seabios screen telling me it is unable to read hard disk. Will this be possible to do if so can someone help please. Thankyou

Been hacking away at it today and I have found a solution. Plug in your ssd via external enclosure to your pc and format to ntfs. Then downloaded pendrive Linux (universal USB installer) and choose the bottom option (try unlisted Linux iso). Load up the Remix os for pc iso and write it to the ssd. Put the ssd back in the chromebox and it will boot straight into Remix os.
Note: If you are doing it from a fresh chromebox still running chrome os on it then it needs to be flashed first to a custom bios. I have option 6 on mine standalone custom core firmware.
The Kodi E-Z setup script will do this.
Just Google it and follow the instructions.
Remix os will allocate 8gb of internal space regardless of the ssd size when using ntfs. Just load up Remix os on your chromebox and follow the install till you get to the desktop screen then shut it down. Then just remove the ssd from your chromebox and put it back into the enclosure and connect it back to your pc. Just Google increase Remix os internal storage and there is a simple tutorial on how to do this. Mine is 48gb ?. Sorry for not posting links I did try but as I am a newbie I wasn't allowed.

Yes just google Kodi E-Z setup script and follow the instructions to prep your box and flash the custom firmware. I have mine on option 6 standalone custom core boot firmware. It works flawlessly.

I actually made a mistake and ruined my bios been messing around all day trying to figure it out Installed Gallian Linus without fail then I ran Remix OS from USB and was able to access my internal hdd which to me is what I wanted anyway then I made another copy of my Remix OS on USB and I copied my USB drive with Remix duplicate into my hdd when it was done I rebooted my chrome box and Remix OS is running from hdd only issue I have is it doesn't load first option just takes to long been over 1hr the second option loads fine
need to find another version that works for chrome box I'm using the one from YouTube video need one that skips the guest mode and goes right into OS so I get full access to Remix and not this crap can't write stuff
