I like to use Google photos as my gallery app but it complains it can't delete SD contents so have to frequently switch to the LG gallery app. Anyway round this?

Google photos can no longer delete photos from expandable storage.
Work around: use QickPic.... Because why wouldn't you.

Annoying permission issue but I guess they expect manufacturers to opt for Adoptable Storage which I assume would negate this issue
Not the best solution, but just save your pics on the internal storage instead of the SD card

Ok so I have a 32gb s3. And a 32gb class 10 micro sd.
My question is:
What should I save on the internal memory and what should I save on the micro sd? Just curious

I would store all of your apps on internal memory, and any large files on the microSD card. That way your apps are accessing fast internal NAND flash, and your large files are portable on the micro SD in case you need to move them.
^^ always a good policy. Music, movies, rom files, etc.. have always had their place on the external card. However, with the 32GB internal storage, you may find yourself moving more stuff to internal storage as it becomes more an issue of portability than memory management.
IMO apps should definitely stay in phone memory so that they load more quickly and work with the external SD card removed (when sharing files or moving stuff around).
I would advise that pictures be kept in internal storage because of the generally higher failure rate of external cards. We've had corrupted cards sweep across the first Galaxy S device, and a lot of people lost a lot of data this way. I've had all my internal/external files backed up to 3 cloud storage solutions ever since, using this awesome app: FolderSync.
It may not be a bad idea to occasionally back up important files (like pictures and documents) to the external storage.
Thank you. As far as music and photos?
Where do you think these are best kept?

Apps can no longer be stored on external storage. Thanks to Google, they coded android to only allow apps access to internal storage, even with apps such as apps 2 sd it is no longer possible. If you root, you will have to move your titanium backup file over to external sd card, and then go under preferences in TB and change the default location. The new cwm will still write to your sd card but that's it. Your very lucky to have gotten the 32gb model, because 16gb could be filled up if your a gamer because of how much data modern games store. You will have to manually move music, movies, and any other large files to your external card. There is a very long thread about this in the international models forum. Also, I believe there's an app that can move game data to the sd card, you have to be rooted & you will find the link to it in the forum that discusses this issue. I hope this makes some sense to you, it's kind of odd & it took me about a week to even discover it.
Thanks bro. Makes sense.
What are you guys using to move files around from internal to external and vice versa

Question.
If I have photos etc saved to my internal storage. And I'm flashing roms. Full wipes required.
Won't I lose all my data and pics?

If your phone has an sd card in it, the first time you use the camera app it will ask you if you want to store photos on your sdcard or extsdcard, choose extsdcard & they will be on your external sd card in a folder called dcim. Only apps that are preloaded on the phone are allowed access to the external storage to write. If/when cyanogen mod comes to our phone, then apps will be able to be stored on extsdcard as usual because cm is built from source, and they have recoded(I guess that's how u would say it) this area of the Android system. So... Stored on extsdcard.... Then pics will be safe, hope I've helped.

You can actually us the stock app called "my files" or a number of third party apps. I use my files or sometimes esFile explorer. Just long press the file you'd like to move and from the list that pops up select copy, cut, or move. Then go to the area you want to the file in & if using esFile explorer touch the button at the top of the screen that says paste, or if using my files press the button at the top that says done. Hope I've helped ya out....

hi jason
are you sure your SD is mounted and recignized?
try to pull it off, and re-insert it. afterwards reboot your device.
if it still isn't recognized try to read it with a card reader\another device and backup+format it.
All the photos in the sd show up perfectly its the internal sd that doesnt show pictures. Also it looks like the root directory has been changed to sdcard/storage/sdcard0

What if your ext-sd damaged inside? Did you try to another sd card? Music player read your mp3 from that sdcard? Or a file explorer app can see and open your pictures?

I have a similar problem. My external SD card is mounted and browsable using ES File Explorer and all my media files are visible and viewable from ES. However, none of the media files on the external card appear in the various apps (i.e. pictures not visible in gallery, mp3s in the music player etc.). What is even stranger is that once I set the stock camera to save new pictures to the external SD these pictures are visible in the gallery, however all other pictures present taken on my previous phone (HTC Desire) are still not visible, even when located in the same folder. The same pictures do show up if I transfer them to the internal SD card but I would rather not have them all stored there.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
Cheers,
Sam

I have the direct opposite problem, my internal doesn't show, whereas met ext-sd is visible in my apps. Need help too!
I have resolved this on mine, I formatted the external sd card and copied everything back. I guess the S3 just didn't like reading a card formatted by the Desire, I'll know better next time!

Search inside your photo folders. If you see a file named .nomedia delete it.
This is because you're using third party file manager. Use the stock My File to move the files back and forth and it will show up in the gallery.

I read somewhere that there was a bug in cwm manager latest version which put a .nomedia file in the root directory. There are fixes where you have to remove the .no media file and reinstall cwm.

sd card does not show on my lg optimus p509, while it works on other phones and pcs. it shows sdcard umnounted or not inserted while i was sending a file through bluetooth before, and from then onwards...i have formatted it through pc also. i had rooted it with superclickone before. it is from t-mobile and i have unlocked it in my country. current software version lg-p509-v10l, android version 2.2, kernel 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1 sun oct 24 19:10:09 kst 2010, build number FRF91. thank you...
My sd photos do not show in my Gallery
Dears,
All you need to do rather than resetting your phones is simply go to your application manager and clear the cache and anything for the Gallery as an application. And make sure that you also acquire the Gallery app with all the needed permissions to access your sd card. Then open your Gallery app, and there you go.
Enjoy!

I noticed that even if I store my pictures in external sdcard.. the space still reflects in the internal sdcard... you can check this in settings -> storage

Think of it this way, I'm not 100% sure, that this is going to be correct, but I'm 90% sure ^^, the app needs to look for the pictures once, and after that only when you add new ones. I'm guessing, that the app does something similar to YouTube, I think it "preloads" the photos, so basically, it stores the neccessary information, in the apps database...
That would explain quite a lot of this mysterious space-domination of Android ^^

Thanks for the reply mate... but can't the gallery do what the music app does, the music app just gets the link of the music, thats why the size of the music apps in internal SD is only in "kb" (Consideringthe music files are saved in the external SD)...
And I think the size of the photos in External SD and Internal SD are the same? This is really weird and no one is complaining about this? Picture files can take up space that's why I'm saving it to the external SD... hmmmm :silly:
I looked at my storage of the phone and the gallery is using almost 3gbs. However, all of my photos and videos are saved to my SD card. Not sure why. Just wondering if anyone knows why and can help free up that storage.
Do you have a lot of screen shots? Those, I believe, get stored on internal storage.

^^^ Good question!
I have it on the extsdcard. I just searched my whole Sd Card and there aren't any pictures really on it. Only 10 screenshots which is like 7mb only. There are some .thumbnails folders. One is 400mb and another is 350mb. Not sure if those are safe to delete. Regardless it is still at 2.49 gb.
Can u give us a screenshot

Install DiskUsage from the play store. It lets you see what the major space users are and drill down to find the files responsible.

Tap on the "Gallery" area. It'll expand to the right to show you what's using the space. Then, you can use the two-finger spread to expand the list of files (i.e. the motion you use to zoom in on a picture).
Basically, that screenshot confirms the fact that you've got a whole bunch of space consumed in the Gallery folder, so zoom in to see what it is.
Edit: looking at that again, the "data" appears to be one big file - click and zoom that area to see details. Seems like Gallery is keeping something huge there.

I tried to zoom but all it does is make the box with "data" in it bigger, but doesn't show anything different then "data 2542MiB". If I clear data in the app info would that delete all my pics even though they are on extsdcard?

It shouldn't delete the pictures, but you'll have to rescan them.
What I'd do is to eject your external SD card, then clear data in Gallery, then re-insert the SD card.

Ahhh genius! I was going to backup my phone then clear data. But removing SD card then clearing data worked and was a lot easier. Thanks a lot! Not sure why it was hogging all that storage. It is now only at 20MiB. What a big difference.

I originally posted this in T mobile lg v10 by mistake, but I tried editing raw and jpeg photos to rotate them from landscape to portrait and every time I click save it says unable to save changes. Any help on this?

I believe it only works if you store pics in the phone's internal memory. I've set it to external storage (microSD card) and started getting this error. Had to switch it back to internal memory.

I've had the same issue when editing photos. I just tried unmounting the SD card and took a new photo, I was able to edit the new photo saved to the phone just fine.
Anyone have a problem with pictures that are taken in portrait mode, as opposed to horizontally, and if you edit them, they won't post on any social media site correctly? Mine all go on correctly, but when I go back to view them they are tilted sideways. Any ideas how to fix?
I don't have any of these issues.
On Verizon, no camera app(s), and every picture taken goes straight to the SD Card and edited, cropped, etc from the SD Card.
