Idk if im supposed to be able to do this but I can flash different roms over each other without it messing up, there's been times where a rom didn't flash until I flashed it over another rom, not sure if its a normal thing

When flashing over systems you can have very bad consequences. ..ie settings may force close and such ...

I do worry about that and feel like if its not as clean as it could be but I just hope nothing catastrophic happens, I actually sometimes get some features of different roms by doing that, and ive also wondered about the modem or whatever NAB and NCD mean, like ive seen people talk about needing to update and am not sure how important that is

If you "dirty flash," there's no problem with that, just know that if you ever encounter an error, we will be unable to help you in any way.
You're right, cross-flashing might leave remnants (features) of the previous ROM, but there's no guarantee that they'll be utilized correctly or linked correctly to the system files. As far as I know, the "worst" thing that could happen by dirty flashing is an unrelenting boot-loop. In those cases, you should just do a full system wipe and re-install the ROM.
I recommend, as Micmars does, a full system wipe prior to installing any ROM, but to each their own.
Typically, ROMs do not install different modems. As far as the MJ4 vs. NAB vs. NC5, here's a little primer on the various versions:
MJ4
This was the last Jellybean TW released for the Sprint Note 3. If you are on MJ4, you'll have to update your bootloader to NAB (or NC5) in order to update to KitKat ROMs (and you can't go back). The
NAB
This is the first KitKat TW ROM for the Sprint Note 3. Once on NAB, you can't go back down to Jellybean (yet... some people are working on it). You need to be on the NAB or NC5 bootloader in order to flash these ROMs.
NC5
This is the second KitKat TW release for the Sprint Note 3. It introduced some updates to the system and it includes WiFi calling (I've never used it, but others say it's really nice). You can flash back and forth between NAB and NC5 ROMs as much as you want, without changing anything. You need to be on the NAB or NC5 bootloader in order to flash these ROMs.
As far as updating to NC5 ROMs, just look at the changelogs between the NAB and NC5 versions of the ROM. If the added/changed features look appealing to you (or it looks more stable), then by all means update.
As far as modems go, I always stick to the newest Modem, which always tend to work best for me (I'm in a large metropolitan area). Sometimes people will report that the older modems (MJ4 or NAB) work better in their area. The Modems are completely separate from the ROMs, so flashing an older (or newer) modem should not have any affect on the stability of the ROM. It's really up to you if you want to update it.
As far as bootloaders go, if you are already on KitKat ROMs, I'd recommend updating to the NC5 Engineering Bootloader, but as long as you're on NAB, you should be fine. Just make sure to read the OP of any ROM you flash, they typically will tell you what version of the bootloader you need to be on.
I've searched this forum several times and can't seem to find a straight answer to this. Is it possible (stable) to run the modem from the ZV8 ROM with a stock (rooted) ZV6 OS? I don't want to run a ZV8 ROM until Xposed is more mature, but I hear that the ZV8 modem is much improved. If this is possible, what is the best method to accomplish it?

That post is from a while back, but it had zv8 and zv6 modems. Might be what your looking for. I believe it said zv8 modem wasn't recognized by number, but still worked.

No not possible, if you use ZV8 modem on kitkat rom you will have radio errors. I think it has to do with PIE, position independent executable, binaries.
Hey you all
Today I tried flashing different modems to my Verizon N900VVRUDNK1 via Odin that I have found here on XDA and Andriod forums in order to get better signal since I only get 3 bars. Well, after flashing the first modem my phone lost connectivity , no signal, no network connection and it keeps rebooting . So thanks to Hsbadr here on XDA he had our NK1 modem , I reflash the nk1 modem and now I'm back in business. It seems that once on nk1 modem you cannot downgrade .
Thanks for sharing this information. I could have sworn I saw other people in the forums talking about flashing other modems. Curious if anyone else has this same issue. I myself have not flashed any modems since the LP update.
Running 4.4.2, and no trouble flashing between NC3, NK1 and the Lollipop modem.

Where are you seeing the OB6 modem tar? I found them up to NK1 but not the Lollipop modem.
*EDIT* Found it in the Jasmine thread, Post #9684

*EDIT 2*
Flashed OB6 and it seems to perform poorly. Flashed to MJE and it seems to be better than NK1 or OB6. YMMV

I am not impressed with the Note3 radio performance at all. I drop calls and data where several other phones can hang on.
With good signal, then it is fine. When you get to low signal areas, then it underperforms.
Once you are on Stock unrooted firmware 4.4.4 you will not be able to change basebands./modems. I have read here on XDA that you can only downgrade firmware from lollipop 5.0 back to NK1 firmware . Signal reception is still the same though.

You're going to have to completely wipe the phone and reload from a stock image via Odin.

Where did you get the idea you can flash any old firmwares and expect them to work with other software components? You're lucky you haven't bricked your phone. If a non-working modem is your biggest problem, you're lucky. The state of your phone is unreliable. Do as the previous poster says and start from scratch. You probably have lost root ability I'm afraid.

Hi, all. I just purchased a Verizon G3 running 23C.
However, I am using AT&T as my carrier. HSPA is working fine but it's extremely slow compared to LTE. From what I understand and what I'd read, AT&T uses band 4 which I believe is in my area. but what I've also read is that the 23C doesn't allow AT&T band 4 LTE to be used and that only 10b can be used to achieve LTE.
I'm comfortable downgrading to 10b to root and load a custom lollipop Rom, but is there any way I can keep the 10b modem so I can use LTE?
Thanks

non stock roms dont flash the modem, so you should be able to put on whatever modem you want.
According to another thread I read recently E: Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/Download/filename.zip', recent versions of custom CM12.1 ROMs check to see if your modem is up to date, so a very recently updated CM12/12.1 ROM might not even flash without modification.
Just heads up, you might have to put on the modem you want AFTER. Whether CM12/12.1 works with an old modem, I have no idea.

Just noticed CM11 official for hltevzw is now getting monthly builds... funny, we have no CM12 or CM13!
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=hltevzw&type=
It got me thinking, though... there are a ton of KK/based roms that are very smooth. In fact, I still think kitkat is the best base for this device as far as stability and battery life. Just look at the size of some of the custom ROMS like DU (180-190 MB) and the fact that they boot in under 20 seconds... even on the initial boot. Crazy efficiency.
I am sure that most people here disagree and interest in running CM11 is pretty low. But it still seems like it should be an option... especially since it is the most current official CM we have (last build is 6-12-2016)
The problem is that the radio in Kitkat doesn't work when coming from OF1. Theoretically, it should work if you ODIN back to KK... but that is not an option given the root/unlock scenarios we have.
So, question is...how do we get the radio working on CM11 coming from OF1... hmmm
I like your thinking mightysween. I saw the same thing last week and wondered myself. Can this be done?

It would seem that flashing the modem would work... but I tried two KK modems with no luck.
Will post some logcats, and maybe we can figure out the right combo.
IDK I am now strongly considering downgrading to 4.4.2. There are a whole lot more stable ROMS available for KitKat than Lollipop for this device. I might pull the trigger this weekend. Currently investigating viability.
Any luck on this?

Not yet... but wow. If you put a new looking theme on any of the refined CM11 based stuff (like DU), people would be abuzz about how smooth and responsive this "new" rom is. I think these older devices are just happier with the older android versions.
Just can't seem to make the radio work...
Have tried as far back as NC4/NK1 modems... but they either don't work at all or exhibit the same problems as OF1.
I wonder if @Moepda might have any insight having worked on sm900 ROMS through the 4.4 to 5.1 updates...
Seems that there must be a modem that would work...or is the newer bootloader version a problem in running 4.4 based roms?
Well... Stupid me never checked to see if ODIN flashing the modems was actually working. It is not! I have tried both tar.md5 versions and directly flashing the modem.bin, and while it appears to work and ODIN says "pass", the modem stays on OF1.
So that's the issue...
That said, it is not a radio problem in general, it is an LTE registration issue. So, when set to 3g only it works AOK!
If I can figure out how to get the flash of NK1 or NC4 modem to stick, I believe LTE would work...

There used to be flashable modems here on XDA, but all the links are dead. I suppose I could just make one and try.
FWIW, I am running an OLD Dirty Unicorns moepda build from 2014, and it is quite refreshing after so long with cm12 and cm13. Fast, stable, and seemingly lacking nothing I use compared to CM12/13

No steps at all, really... it just works. Flashed and then switch to 3g preferred.
I don't need LTE... so I haven't spent much time trying to figure it out. Both this old DU and CM11 monthly are working fine as long as LTE is shut off

I am going to give this a whirl. I have always had trouble with finding the right gapps for KitKat though. Which did you select?
Notice much drop off in using 3G instead of LTE?
BTW In an earlier post I mentioned I was going to downgrade. Well, that's not really possible and you might already know that. I attempted 4.4.2 and was abruptly stopped by the bootloader. I did read though that 4.4.4 was possible, but if we can do all this and get a stable ROM that has GPS and Bluetooth functional why bother?

I am on wifi about 90% of the time, and when I am not it is usually while driving. So having only 3g doesn't bother me.
Bluetooth and GPS seem to work fine... GPS is certainly faster and more stable than LP/MM

Oh, and I just use open gapps nano... works fine
I take that back... You need to set the preferred network to LTE, let it connect (and then fail), and THEN set to 3G in order for it to stick.
Love the feature set from DU, but have to say that the 6-12-2016 nightly is pretty smooth.
So is LTE working on the 4.4.4 build?
