I've built cyanogenmod a few times back in 2012 when I had an HTC Sensation. Never ported it to a new device.
I bought a Samsung Tab 4 (T230NU) a year and a half ago. It stopped working, wouldn't boot, I tried a bunch of different cords, it was non working for over a year, and I suddenyl had the idea to try a new cord again and bang, it works. I feel silly about that. It turns out I had also rooted it prior to it not working.
I've been looking for roms, and they're all kit kat, so I'm going to port CM13 to the t230nu. I think the process will be pretty straightforward, but if anyone has any tips or advice, I'm glad to hear it.
A bit of background, I'm a professional software engineer, use Arch linux, not unfamiliar with building software from source. I write in a bunch of different programming languages, and am part of the Liri Project, working on Liri Music. I'm hoping the experience I have will help me out here.
So CM13 is Android 6. Will there be any incompatibilities with kernels or vendor sw?

Hey there, everyone.
I'm just looking for some advice. I've been using my Verizon Samsung Fascinate since November, and for the most part have been a very happy user. Ever since I installed a Gingerbread-based ROM, I have been extremely happy with both the device's performance and new features (nothing says cool like the Old TV Shutoff animation). Lately, I have been wanting to try my hand at modifying and packaging my own Android ROMs for the Fascinate. Obviously, I have never done something like this before, so I'm looking for some advice.
I've been programming in Java for over a year now and I'm very familiar with the language as a whole. I've used it in various programming competitions through school along with building some applications and tools for the company I'm currently interning with. Right now, I feel that I have the basic programming skills required to look through code and understand what the logic behind it is (at least I hope).
My question for you all is this: should I jump right in and start poking through the AOSP code, or would it be more beneficial for me to start off as an Android App Developer, slowly working my way into Android hacking? I have some ideas for potential apps (which I'll probably end up developing regardless, but at a later date), so if it would be more beneficial to just develop apps, I certainly have a basis for my ideas.
Any personal stories/recommendations would be excellent. Thanks in advance for any/all answers!
I am going to start building roms and porting roms etc. I may not be a developer, but when I am to a level of satisfaction with myself, I probably will be. I am posting this here because I will be building for this phone.
I recently acquired a windows vista laptop with major (I mean MAJOR) software issues and driver conflicts that I have been able to fix, as the PC could not even boot into an OS, I will be installing windows 7 ultimate when the download finishes. I am not a noob when it comes to working with PCs and etc.
So please post and tips, tricks, guides, and general help here or PM me.
I would have started sooner if I had the computer to use and work on.
I plan on learning more than just building and compiling but that would be a good start.

First tip - ditch Windows and use a Linux distro. I use Ubuntu. A LOT easier to build from source using a native machine, imo.
Dual-boot that ****. I need me my Win8.1 for stuff like rearranging tiles for no reason.
Actually, I get to rebuild my computer tower when I get a chance to use my friends spare parts. My laptops motherboard went out yesterday about 20 minutes after I installed ubuntu, And it was a dual boot. Ruined my day. So hopefully I'll be able to restart the project when I get the tower rebuilt. As it is from about 2002 with 512mb of ram. Could be a few days or weeks, who knows.
Hey, I'm a comp sci/eng major and I'm trying to get my feet soaked in android and other languages other than c++, ruby, and go. What I would like to do is take the base of android and rebuild it a little bit by adding features to make more use of our phones, somewhat like how the MIUI ROM is. However, I don't know where to start, I've tried looking up on Google about this, but I keep coming across ROM cooking, and that's not what I'm trying to do. Clearly, I need to learn java, and probably few more languages; as well as how android works as an os which I have. If anyone can lead me into the right direction by sending links on how to give android an overhaul, disect apk, ROMs, and the programs I'll need, I think I should be fine. Thank you in advance. Any insight would be ungodly as well.
Got tired of paying for freetime on the kids' devices so installed CM11. Found out there are a few things that are not perfect, mostly the fact the headphone jack does not seem to work. Makes for noisy road trips. Wondering if anyone is currently working on anything for this devices? Is there a decent device tree to build from? Not sure if this would be the best device to start learning on but would be willing to setup a machine to attempt builds, with help. Thought I read there were problems trying to build CM12 and something about signatures for other builds. Most of the stuff seems pretty old as this devices is not new. Any thoughts?
Since Amazon has a lollipop build for the HD6 couldn't we extract the blobs from the stock rom and build CM12 or some other lollipop variant?
So, I've got the Blackview BV9900Pro which as you probably know if you are reading this, is a wonderfully well priced, rugged phone with the Lepton FLIR camera built in. Being a Treble device, it is possible to install most GSI ROMs to it, however there is currently no build of TWRP, and thus far, nobody seems to have been able to get the FLIR working on the GSIs. This presents two problems. First, recovery is a wonderfully useful tool to have, and the stock recovery leaves a lot to be desired, Second, the FLIR is the main reason for buying the pro model of this phone, rendering custom ROMs virtually useless.
That being said, I love this phone, and want to start to work on both. This will be a major learning curve as a) I'm not a developer by trade (I'm a marine engineer and environmental officer on a cruise line) and b) My job takes 10+ hours a day, 7 days a week when I am on board leaving me with limited time to put into it. I've built Linux from scratch (LFS back a number of years ago) which gave me good experience with the build environment and with compiling code / troubleshooting issues so I am confident I can pull it off, but I'm intersted in gauging if there is interest in publishing my work for others ot use.
If you have the 9900Pro phone, and are intersted in either TWRP and/or custom ROMs that support the FLIR, drop me a reply here and let me know. If you have any experience with modifying custom ROMs to work with vendor hardware, I would LOVE to hear about it - it will perhaps help guide me in my efforts. One of my biggest peeves with the phone is the lack of support for basic features (ie, SIP calling is not natively supported in the vendor's ROM) and the bugginess of the OS (apps being closed int he background, widgets not loading on boot etc). The GSI I am running now (Lineage) solves these issues, but the lack of IR camera really devalues the phone, so I'm hopeful that I can resolve the issue, and make this phone worth having.
Also, if anyone knows how to go about adding a new device to the forum tree, please chime in. I'm completely new to this whole developer support thing but comitted to making it work!
Cheers everyone!
