Does anyone know of a solution for this?
I'm on Lollipop 0F1
This should be per app and not a system setting.
For example, within the xda app - in settings - you can change where files are downloaded to. Within the chrome browser app, I don't believe you can do this. If you are trying to change this for downloading from a browser, try Dolphin browser app. I think it has that versatility.

Where does the stock android browser save its settings? I want to access the settings file and modify it for thisgs such as desktop mode.
I am aware of the debug menu, but I am looking to modify the file that stores the settings directly. I am rooted, I just don't know where the file is stored.

Just use Dolphin HD. Stock browser isn't quite there yet.

You can recompile the frameworkres.apk, then navigate to values/strings.XML. then search for web_user_agent in that XML and change it to desktop there. Then recompile.
I am having trouble downloading .zip files in my web browser. I used to be able too but maybe not, any way I'm on unamed 1.3.2 and syriah kernal .. 2.4.2 (whatever latest one is). I have tried changing the encoding options to auto and I have allow 3rd party apps. Any ideas on why it wont. I have also noticed that it says application is not supportsd by this device. So I don't know why its being all weird.

I keep getting this app installing on the last screen Page of my screen and there is no icon for it in the application menu. And every now and then it changes my browser homepage and sends me advertisement notifications. Would like to know if anyone has an ideal what this is. I'll click it and it will go to browser.
What do you mean by "the last screen Page of my screen"?
Do you know the name of the app?
Can you find the app if you go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications?
When you press home and scroll all the way to the left it will be in the left corner of that Page.
It's like some searching application and it is now where to be found in in management application section.
Odd. Have you tried anything like lookout to scan?

So would the app backgrounds do that?
I personally only seen it with Live Wallpapers not all of them but most that contain Ads usually when you restart your phone they pop up and then they are gone

Hi,
I am facing the same problem here with my XOLO Q2000 (rooted).
Whenever I switch on data connection, following apps keep installing itself.
1> Boyaa Texas Poker
2> Baidu Browser
3> Flappy Bird
4> playApp
Please help me uninstalling them.:crying:
You downloaded those stuff from playapp.
Just uninstall play app and those will be gone

I tried to uninstall playApp more than once. But it install itself silently without any notification or permission. Similarly other three apps did download and install just after playApp. And now ucbrowser just landed with other three.
Until I mess with playApp everything was cool.
Please help me remove this junk(playApp) and its residue. Otherwise I have to format my device.
Thanx for your support.

Thanx zyferx and santod040 for your valuable suggestions.
I think I solved the mystery. I just found an application (named as 'android system' from same me.com.basiapk source) running in background during this drama. With the help of 'system cleanup' app I froze that one and now no ghost appearance anymore. I uninstalled those craps safely as well.
I learned a lot from you guys. Thanks a ton once again.

How do I get dedicated apps (YouTube, Play Store) to open links and not the browser/chrome?
The only way I have found it to work is to not have a browser installed. On my tablet links open up the apps but with this phone the browser takes over.
The settings don't mean anything and no prompt even comes up when clicking a link asking what app I want to use to open said link, it just goes to the default browser automatically.
It like this on three ICS roms I've used.

Go to settings>apps>all go to the app called internet and make sure that you tap "Clear Defaults" then go into the browser and click a YouTube link and see if that works.
I am having the same problem. The recommendation.above does not work for me. I am using CleanRom Pro. The problem appears to be caused by the "App Association" settings where links are directed to the internet app and other possible apps (for certain links like YouTube or GooglePlay) are not listed. As far as I can tell, there is not a manual way to add apps to the various actions. Can anyone recommend a different ICS ROM that doesn't use this faulty "App Association" setting?
Its like that with Nils ROM as well.
I am surprised nobody else has this problem.

I know this thread is old but I'm still having the same issue. I'm running the stock ROM for my HTC Vivid and I also have the same issue. I don't think the problem is related to the ROM. Anyone made any headway with this issue?

Have you tried cleaning the app data of download manager?
Or did you disable system apps?

Yeah I cleared the data from my download manager but whav do you mean by disable system apps?
i used to remove or disable every app which i considered useless for how i use my phone
so i eventually disabled "Downloads" because i thought i only download things but don't want the app to show up in my app drawer as "Downlaod Manager" takes care of downloading stuff
does downloading apps via play store work for you?

Yes I can download apps just not anything else.
I have had the same problem once myself
But I just can't figure out at the moment how I solved it
You could try things that usually fix some issues like
- Wiping cache and dalvik cache
- Trying a different browser
Do you have root? Or are you just a 'regular' user?
Are you using apps like android firewall? Or have you restricted some apps' permissions?
