Hello All,
I'm pretty experienced with Android and flashing new software and all that, but I am at my wits end this time. Last week I installed a ROM on my Sprint HTC One M7 that had hangouts as the default SMS app. I hate hangouts, so I installed a third party app. I only ended up having that ROM installed for a day or two before flashing a new one, and suddenly I couldn't receive SMS. I tried tons of things before finally ending up running the RUU to flash back to stock. Since hangouts is in the stock ROM, as soon as it booted, all of my texts popped up right there in hangouts, where they had been being diverted the whole time, despite SMS being turned off in Hangouts.
This time, I updated Hangouts, toggled SMS on and then off again, but all of my incoming texts were still going to Hangouts and not appearing in my stock SMS app at all. Finally, I flashed an updated stock rooted ROM, and no matter what I try, I cannot get Hangouts to stop handling my incoming texts. This is absolutely infuriating, because as aforementioned, I'd rather lobotomize myself with a chopstick than use Hangouts. Has anyone else encountered this? Please help me!
Thanks!

Go into the application manager, find Hangouts, and clear defaults. If you don't use it for anything else, you can always disable/delete it.

I appreciate the suggestion, but unfortunately this was one of the first things that I tried and it did not work. Hangouts currently has no defaults set and is disabled on my phone. There was a 48 hour period where Hangouts wasn't even installed on my phone but it was still handling incoming texts.

I agree! I wouldn't be here if I wasn't stumped. I had something similar happen with Google voice back on ICS when I had an SGS2, but eventually I was able to disable it. This time I am at a loss for real.

Duplicate installation, perhaps? I had this weird thing going on the other day where Titanium did an automatic restore after flashing a batch install of backups, and I had 2 iterations of Weather Bug (different versions). There have also been times where certain sideloaded apps had 2 iterations installed.
Try using a root file explorer and searching for for Hangouts. Maybe there's an .apk somewhere that still loads up even though it's not "installed" anymore.

Gonna check right now just to rule it out but I don't have high hopes since I did a full wipe before installing the Lollipop ROM that didn't contain Hangouts at all. I appreciate the continued suggestions though.

No Gapps packages, no batch restores? Maybe Google is doing it automatically when you first activate the phone. You're given the option to backup/restore your account, and if you do, the phone will start downloading apps that you had installed before.

Hmmmmm, that's one thing I did not think about, is using the Google restore feature when fresh installing. I did flash GAapps with the Lollipop Build but immediately disabled Hangouts. I wonder if maybe the setting isn't being applied "behind the scenes" when I flash a new ROM and allow Google to automatically restore settings. I'll have to play with this a bit. Thanks again.

That could be it. Installed, then disabled, then installed again automatically. If the restore is coming from a different source from Play Store, it's possible it's not making the same checks for existing installations, giving you a duplicate.

Man, I am really about to pull my hair out with this whole thing. I just installed a new ROM deleted Hangouts from system/app using root explorer after denying the auto-restore for Google and I still couldn't receive texts. Rebooted. Sent myself a few more test texts before re-installing hangouts and lo and behold, Hangouts had been receiving the texts even while not installed on any android device that I own. If Hangouts was a building, I would have looted it and burned it to the ground about an hour ago.

Yeah, I think I have managed to find some super strange bug or something, I don't know. Thanks anyway for your multiple attempts.
What phone/app are you sending the texts from?

I was wondering if you had any luck finding what causes all the text to go to hangouts. I can receive MMS through messenger but not SMS. I thought I was the only person with this annoying problem. I was about to order another device but there has to be a solution to this problem.

Dray,
I did eventually solve it, though the problem persisted even after RUU. It turns out that the issue was with Google Voice. I don't use Google Voice, but I flashed a ROM that had SMS turned on in Google Voice by default. When I flashed a new ROM, sms was still being handled by Google Voice despite neither Voice nor Hangouts being installed on my phone. You should go into settings in Google Voice and make sure sms is turned off. If the app is not installed on your phone, download it and make sure it is turned off anyway, because as aforementioned it was affecting my sms even though Google Voice wasn't even installed. This should solve it.

@The_mamba ....Thanks so much. I was beginning to think the worse had happened. Thanks for getting back to me and helping me solve this thing. :highfive:
Twin Sprint stock LG G3's (wife and I) and both have spontaneously sent "my location" messages via SMS to a couple people when we most certainly DID NOT WANT TO DO THIS. I've searched and found nothing to stop (but plenty to enable) sending of location - it's been mostly in G+ (disabled), Hangouts (disabled), and settings (I use GPS and wifi, but no settings to stop or start auto-sending location).
If we ask "where are you?" in hangouts (gchat) it will prompt to share a location, but we just opt not to. The auto-sending via text is a problem though.
What do you think could be causing this and what is the solution, please?
EDIT: The main issue happened when I called my mothers land line and it sent a "my location" web link text to her cellphone. WTF would cause that??
Thanks!
What ROM/ software are you using? I have a feeling it may be the sprint software interfering. Also, what was the location link? Like g.co(google) or a sprint link or something else

It's stock, Android 5.0.1, Software version LS990ZVE.
The link that showed up is "My Location(accurate to 21 yards) http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&geocode=q=(and then lat/long coordinates)"
I'd like to stress this is NEW behavior. And hardly consistent. I'd love to root this phone, I have rooted several others I've had but got tired of managing my device to that degree.

Hi folks,
I've got a weird issue for some time back now. It regards the reminders in the Google app, you know "remind me to do this and that at 2pm". They show up in many apps now like Inbox, calendar and so forth. Very useful, but I have a severe issue: they automatically dismiss themselves a second after they are going off. I hear the sound, and look down at my watch or the phone and I see the notification pop up and then immediately disappear again automatically. When I go into reminders I see them being checked off, marked done, without me doing anything. The problem only arise with timed reminders "at 2pm, in 2 hours" etc. When I set a location reminder "remind me to buy milk at coop", the resulting reminder stay in place as expected.
Any suggestion on what to do? I've got the latest Google app, from the beta channel but as I said this problem has been there a long time now, months likely. I'm on a S7 Edge.

It's been a known issue for a while, Google is seemingly just now addressing it. They promised a fix soon™ on the Android Wear Help Forums.

Oh, so no point in trying to find a problem in my own device then. Incredible they aren't getting to it until NOW. It's been there for months now.
I am having this issue too and I use it all the time.
I ended up coding a notification replacement in Tasker using autonotification. It works but I lack the feature to postpone (since the real reminder is already dismissed).

Last night i was enjoying in new design of Facebook messenger on my Samsung Galaxy J6 2018 mobile.
This morning when i woke up i saw they switched me to old design once again during night.
Tried with reinstalling and updating messenger but simply there is no way to get the new one back again.
Anyone else have this case ?
Did ads got more space in the new design? I hope they do. My friends might finally switch to Telegram.

Well there is a big one on the middle of screen. You can't scroll without noticing it.
But its the same as on the all other apps inc. Viber
the same case here
The update is an account flag set on Facebook's server side. People are getting the "update" in waves.
There's no need to update Messenger if you have the latest version already, it'll be enabled when your time comes.

Hello all,
I'm having a strange problem with my S23 Ultra. I can receive notifications from Telegram, Messages and WhatsApp but not from my banking apps.
To diagnose the problem, I checked that notifications are enabled for the apps, no deep sleep, lock screen notifications not showing content for the apps, I enabled notification history and attempted to transfer money from one bank to another. I received no notification. Checked the notifications history and there was nothing for the app. However, luckily within the app it allows you to see sent notifications and it it's recorded that it's sent a notification of the transfer.
What else can I do to diagnose. This is only impacting some apps (mainly banking ones from what I can see) although it is difficult to tell for sure if you don't actually know whether the app sent a notification or not.
Have you tried to set the app's battery settings to unrestricted?

Did these apps send you notifications previously on prior devices?
Not OP, but at least on my device, prior to updating it to android 13 all apps would give me notications with no issue
Did you set the phone up from scratch or restore from a backup? If the latter, that's probably your problem. I would factory reset the phone and take a few hours to set everything up from scratch.
None , just OTA updated it.
I guess that is closer to backup though. I might factory reset it tomorrow when I have a bit of time then. Just a bit annoying, especially from an OTA update
