best solution to expand memory on 16gb model? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

hi,
I'm thinking about buying a note 3 pro and the 16gb / 2gb version is really cheap right now. I think I won't have problems having 2gb ram instead of 3gb, I rarely multitask and most of the time I close programs which I don't use. but I don't know about the 16gb internal space ... seems really little. is there some way to merge internal + sd without android 6.0? or some other way?

Well, I use an application called foldermount it moves heavy game files to SD card.. ROOT REQUIRED.. also try installing aosp ROM it has a lot of bloatware removed so has more internal space available

does foldermount work on any game?

while charging my phone reaches 45 Celsius as given in entering info is it normal?

Foldermount won't help. Only obb to sd xposed module or aosp where you can move every app you want. It's funny because on miui you can't ?

Foldermount can only move big game data files..

Sorry for necroposting but maybe someone still will need the answer, so there it is:
Apps2SD, a brilliant app for doing this job
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd.pro&hl=pl
It also has a free version.
With this you can move .apk files of the games or other apps,
also OBB of big games are movable to the microSD card.
It moves the files to the external microSD card and creates links to the moved content, so the phone
can "think" it's in internal
I'm using this on my Redmi Note 2 and Redmi 3 and the games and apps are working without problems.
But be sure to use a class 10 microSD card, not any lower speed. (And check the condition of your microSD card
before you put it in the phone, for example with free HD Tune on Windows.
You may not want using a card with bad sectors )
Apps2SD it's convenient, reliable when you set it correctly, and it has a nice interface i think.
Not a bloatware and it has some very useful options like partitioning tool, storage info (space) check,
and a backup tool!
Also very good help thread here on XDA

As a 16GB kenzo user, DON'T BUY THE 16GB ONE AND GO FOR THE 32GB VERSION
Here are some of the difficulties:
Google Camera mod: You're gonna definitely use it when you have this device. It doesn't have a save2sd option so you can't shoot videos for long. Add in mind that more ram let's you process hdr+ photos with higher quality. On lower ram devices you have a higher chance of F.C.
Games: You already know.
Multitasking: Definitely 3GB ram is a better choice. I wish I had enough money to buy the 32GB variant. I can't run another app if I'm playing some kind of game. The game automatically closes.

[Q] App storage

I'm really confused after reading through a post. The poster stated that there was only around 1.75mb available for app storage. Is this phone really handicapped down to under 2 gigs for app storage? If so, that's sad. It'll be returned before I even open the box. Two large size games and you're out of storage.

I answered you other post. It really does have a ton of storage! That is GB not MB All the preinstalled stuff proabably took it from around 2 GB down to the 1.75GB that someone mentioned. Hell you can put a 64GB micro SD card into it and download as many games as you want!
I haven't gotten a chance to play with it much yet, but if it's the same thing as my Skyrocket, it'll be around 2gb for system storage, and 11.25gb for internal storage. Apps will be stored in system storage, while app data will be stored in internal storage. Even large game executables will be a max of what...50mb?

I think this is what is getting me. I have an LG thrill right now. I have a 32 gig SD card and I can't move actual games to the external SD card (the one taht you buy at the store taht you store pics and videos on).
But on the Thrill I have 6 gigs to move apps to.

Well, most yes. But I have some Gameloft games that take from anywhere from a half a gig to a full gig.
I think you have about 11gb free for songs, music, etc.

That's much better. That I can deal with.
"One of the plagues of using Google’s Android platform was the inability to install Android apps and games to the SD Card versus internal memory storage; with the official announcement of Android 2.2 this feature will come standard. By default, apps will continue to be installed on internal memory storage, however a quick visit to the list of applications in the Settings menu offers one touch to move the app to SD Card. Thus they are playable just fine from the SD Card. Now user storage for apps and games will only be limited to the storage of the SD Card purchased."

Not true of all devices running 2.2 or above. My Thrill won't move any apps to the external SD card. I bought a 32 gig just for this purpose...to have plenty of space. The move was limited to the devices app storage (around 6 gigs).

Can't move apps to SD Card

I've 16gb class 10 sd installed in SIII. Can browse it using My files (stock filemanagr) but can't see the external sd in OIbrowser or when trying to move apps from internal to external. In app manager it doesn show the option to move. Also tried app2sd but the option of moving doesn't show.
Any help would be appreciated.
Samsung changed the mount location for the external SD card, will be a problem for lots of apps until they update to support the new location (I confirmed this in my hands-on with the S3 last weekend - details @ AndroidNZ.net). Can you not do it with the native a2sd function from Settings --> Apps --> Manage apps though?

NOpes appmanager doesnt show move option in SIII.
This is not good can this be changed by a dev?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA
Why would you want to do it? GS3 has a single partition for all data, you'll never run out of the 16GB (11 usable) space you have to store apps. And it's faster memory than your sdcard.

Yes, i understood this after reading more posts. This way is much better. 11gb itself + 50GB dropbox + wahtever you can throw in extSD
That's correct. You can read all about this in the excellent article by Chainfire on his blog entry: "Is Google blocking apps writing to SD cards?". In summary; it is not yet clear whether or not this is a (Google) feature or bug. But although Samsung is trying to work around the issue, they do so in a very sloppy way...
:?
Thanks for the link to the article. clarifies a lot. Got my SGS3 yesterday & I freaked out when I couldn't find the "Move to SDcard" link in the app manager...
I don't really like that method...

Agreed this is not what I was expecting, the question is can it be changed?
Or have I just wasted my money on a 64gb sdxc card?
the phone has 11 gb to store music and files, or it has 11 to install app's (internal memory, like the s1 had 1.9 gb to store apps and 5.6 to store files)?
according to the above, i would say that internal memory is used for apps and the external(SD) for music/video or non app.
im wondering if you can store maps for navigation there as they do take quite a bit of space.

Is this some sort of code ?
I've been using my SGS3 for 3 days now. 16GB internal +32GB external SD
So far:
- device memory total space 11.35GB & available 1.65GB (downloaded my Google Play Music collection, went straight to internal memory, no choice)
- SD card total space 29.71GB & available 29.71GB
What I hope is happening:
the data is being distributed somehow between both cards and it just doesn't show, OR as someone stated above, the internal storage has 11GB dedicated to apps & music and what-not, and once that is used up, any additions will be moved to the external SD
What I think will happen:
"You have run out of memory, please remove some files or apps to proceed", in a typical Microsoft moment...
I was prompted only once to install stuff on the external SD; those were additional files (250MB) that needed to be downloaded for a game I had just installed. Of course I chose external SD but it doesn't look like it worked...
Some positive indications
Camera app allows me to chose the default save location. I chose external SD and now I see it has created the DCIM folder there with some pics.
My internal card is almost full. I've been making a few little downloads. Using the default file explorer I checked the external card folder, and found another new folder called Downloads with my recent stuff in there.
As explained by Chainfire (the way I understood it), the combined space from both cards works together as one.
Dropbox as well it would seem. Not that I tried that.
This isn't an issue for me. I already have a 64gb card with all my music stored on it. I will most likely never download anymore. The rest of the memory card will be for roms kernels themes and backups and an occasional movie.

Spot on
Storage is shared for everything from Honeycomb onwards. Many ICS phones don't have sd cards.
EDIT: Oh I see the problem, many apps aren't being given permission to write to the primary external flash storage (16/32/64Gb etc...) and are then failing. That sounds like a bug to me. They've got to be able to write their app data somewhere.
Alright, this is not working properly.
I filled up my internal SD with my Google Play music. Downloaded an app which requires additional data, and it wouldn't download it until I freed up space, even though my external SD is practically untouched.
Freed up just the right amount of space by removing some of my music and I was able to download the extra data for the app.
Went back to Google Play Music to see if a Google product would know how to manage between both cards. I re-check all the music I deleted to download it again, and it tells me my memory is full...
Not happy
If you cannot even save apps on the internal SD card, then that is def. a problem and a bug. But i would doubt that is happening, otherwise all the already pre-installed software would have taken all the space.

emulation and storage help

Hey guys, I have a few things I was hoping someone can help me with;
1. how can I set my apps to be stored in the external SD card? I went to the settings on the phone but there's no option to change the storage location. I know I can just drag files into the SD card but I don't see the files for the apps (ex: wild blood which is over 2gb or order and chaos)
2. being that this is a quadcore phone with 2gb ram, I expected to run the ds emulator near full speed but it's running at the same speed as it did on my galaxy s2. I even had the quadcore enabled in the settings on the phone. Is this lag an issue of the emulator itself? the N64 emulator runs smoother on the optimus g, why doesnt the DS emulators? any suggestions?
--thank you.
The addtional data that large games download must stay on the internal sd card. If you follow my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2056662 you can move the data to the external sd but trick the system into thinking it's on the internal.
Native app2sd hasn't worked in android since honeycomb. Google is really trying to get rid of external sd cards in android. However, if you read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2022773 mainly post 5 and 10 you can set up link2sd which works perfectly.
You can use both options together or separately. Both require root.
EDIT: Since it took forever to find the second link, I added the information about Link2SD to my main thread.
Yes, I have used the above mod to move game data to the external, wild blood included.
Works great. Read the thread.
I have not used apps to SD, as the apps themselves don't take up much room.
As for the emulator, it runs very slow for me too.
It is still being developed. It is known to be slow, It isn't the phone, it is the emulator.
oh alright. Thank you both for helping me

Move apps to SD card?

Is there anyway to move apps from internal memory to SD card? Games like NFS take up a huge amount of storage and I'm running out of space. :silly:

I used to use DirectoryBind on my Xperia ZL while it was on 4.1.2. It needs root and works perfectly. I'm sure it will work on your tablet as well but if you have upgraded to 4.2.2 then you will need another solution.
I just bought my Xperia Tablet Z and went with the 32GB model for exactly this reason. People recommended the 16GB version because you can add an SdCard anyway to compensate but they don't seem aware that games that have a big game data such as NFS, Spiderman, Batman + many others will suck that 16GB dry and cannot be moved easily to the SdCard even though many apps on the Play Store claim they can. Every app I tried was a fail except for DirectoryBind which can be found on XDA by searching a bit.
Good Luck!!
Thanks a lot!!! I used Directory Bind with my S2 - never thought it can be used with Tablet Z!!!

App2sd

Does the Note 3 Pro allow for app2sd?
Thinking of getting the 16gb model if it is possible. Since the extra gig of ram doesnt really add to much performance.
Also, whats the general consensus in this forum, 2gb or 3gb model? and why?
Thanksss

No

It matters a lot while multi-tasking, MIUI is RAM hungry & frequently kills background apps.
Also, whats the general consensus in this forum, 2gb or 3gb model? and why?
I am using the 2GB model, 800MB free RAM & around 10GB storage available on 1st boot. I had to flash custom ROM to get rid of RAM management issues.
If you are a heavy user, use 4-5 apps simultaneously & install a lot of apps get the 3GB else 2GB one will suffice.

Nope, Xiaomi never supported App2SD even after rooting. Its a restriction imposed by MIUI.
Boring, was thinking to use my 128Gb card for this...
Try xposed framworks...
so, if we were able to get a non MIUI ROM, can we get app2sd to work then?

Yeah, I think it's possible.
You can use XinternalSD (with XPOSED... root and xposed framework needed)
This app can change internal patch to SD with all or some apps...
whatsapp media direct to SD
here we go maps direct to SD
titanium backup files direct to SD
work fine with games but i dont recomend this.
dont move apps... move apps data only
