I have some apps that will let me write to anywhere on the microSD Card. Most apps will only write to a subdirectory on the microSD Card /Android/data/.
Is there a fix for this or is it up to the individual apps?

I noticed that the external SD card is only visible within the default file manager app. 3rd party apps are unable to view/browse the external sd card. Is it possible to work around this? I wish Samsung did it the traditional way here..

I too cant see it in Astro but is is visable in Root Explorer although the default location as changed and it took me a few minutes to find it, previously with the SGSII it was (in Root Explorer) when you clicked on SD Card > External SD but know the location is mnt > ext sd card

Yes I realised that too. It is very annoying! That made Astro practically useless!
Use Total Commander instead. It works fine ...
I use astro and can get to the Ext SD by going into Manage My Files then going Up one level to /mnt from /mnt/sdcard then the extSdCard folder is visible
I've noted a problem with SD Card permissions after updating to ICS. I am not rooted, and now that I have updated, it doesn't look like I can root now but the card appears to be Read Only for everything except the preloaded apps.
Any third party app (Astro, Chrome, etc) cannot save files to the SD card. I have to save the file on internal card and then use File Transfer to move it over.
I've found a few suggestions on how to fix it but it requires Root access. Does anyone have an idea how to change the permissions without Root?
Thanks in advance.
I don't think it's possible to change permission assigned to the sdcard2 (external sd), because the file you have to modify is in the system partition. It is possible if you have root permission on your tablet.
Bye ENx
You might use /mnt/sdcard2 instead. At least with ES File Explorer this works fine. Try to contact the developers of your Apps if they don't provide a configuration option.

That's not going to help. In ICS, the external SD is still mounted at /mnt/sdcard2, but now its mounted read-only for non-Sony apps. You would need root to remount the SD card if you want rw to sdcard2, so I've got nothing.

I'm not sure if I understand correctly. I successfully copied a file into /mnt/sdcard2 with ES File Explorer. A copy to /sdcard2 fails.
I'm at ICS.
Information on this issue: "Is Google blocking apps writing to SD cards" (I'm not allowed to post link)
Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried the /mnt/sdcard2 option but it still failed. I have several ways to work around it but it's just annoying that it can't be easily fixed.
I read where ICS 4.06 fixes this but no telling when Sony will release an update to that. I will probably just wait until I can root the device.
Thanks again.
i'm writing to sony support, it's really stupid that i can't access my SD with the file manager i like !
Won't see sd card
Hi guys, i have a problem.
I bought a new sd card and tablet won't see it.
But in phone that sd card could be read.
What is the problem?
I tried to format sd card but the same.
Also the sd card from phone could be read in tablet, that is strange
Make sure the SD card is formatted in FAT32 so the Tablet can read it.
As far as i know, in kitkat apps are restricted from accessing other folders in sd card. but they can read and write data to their own folders in SD card isn't it? so y am i unable to move all the data to sd card? like in asphalt or something, cant that app move the data to its own folder in the SD card?

Yeah that's not possible .Its how it is....only apk move to SD card not the app data. You shud just root and then use Folder mount
Low end phones are much better with root access

HELP.!!!!!!!
How can i move pre-installed apps to sd card??? My phone is rooted...
pre installed apps are usually placed in system folder
the updates of those apps can be moved to sd card using link2sd
in order to move the entire app to sd card, the system app should be converted to user app
heard about another app called folder mount with about the same usage, but personally haven't tried it yet

Hi I report a simillar issue to sony support 2 days ago. I understand that you need to modify of your external sd card within your explorer application. Here I have re: from sony support:
We would like to inform you that in Androidâ„¢ version 4.4 (KitKat) third-party apps can only change SD card content that belongs to that app. If you, for example, want to move content on the SD card using Astro File Manger, it doesn't work in Android version 4.4 (KitKat).
This is a change introduced by Google. We cannot estimate whether this will be changed in future updates. In Android 4.4.2 Google has revised the usage of the SD card for third-party applications.
While downloaded third-party applications can read and open all compatible content on your SD card, they can not:
- create folders on the SD card
- copy or move contents on the SD card
- personalize the location of data on the SD card
Please note that preinstalled system applications still have full access to the SD card.
In coming software releases of Android 4.4, the File Commander file manager app will be preinstalled. Using the preinstalled File Commander, you will be able to edit, copy and move files belonging to any app (full read- and write-access to the SD card).

I think that with rooting your tablet and installing sdfix or xposed framework will fix your problem .....but you void your warranty
Jupp, thinking about selling my z2 as is already full 2 months after purchase

You need to 'trick' the file system into thinking your Ogg and or Android data directories are on the SD card.
Relinking manually via terminal, or using Foldermount both which require root is how it's done.

Device: Moto E 2015
Android: 5.0.2
Coming from android 4.0 I could manage files on my external SD card using Windows Explorer, AirDroid, or any 3rd party file manager.
Now that I'm using 5.0.2 I cannot manage files on the external SD card using any of those methods. The SD card has over 14 gigs free. The card is formatted and works as Google pushed over my photos and music from the internal SD card fine.
Another problem is I can't move any apps to the SD card. With android 4.0 I could push an app like iBird Pro to the external SD card. Now when I try to push that app to the external SD card it claims there is not enough space. Android storage shows there is over 14 gb free and iBird Pro is under 1 gb.
It would appear that 5.0.2 is a total wreck when trying to make use of the external sd card. *sigh* I hear rumors that M may fix this... if the Moto E 2015 happens to get that update.
You can transfer media to your SD, transfer some apps to SD (if they allow it) But SD write permissions have been a PIA since 4.4.X, so hopefully M does sort it all out.

So basically useless right now. I manage my own media content in a structure I like. Sad. Hopefully M will fix this mess.
Still trying to write to the external sd card. Latest developments.
Moto E 2015
Android 5.0.2
Windows 8.1
Trying to transfer files or create folders on the external SD card in my Moto E 2nd Gen. causes the following error:
"The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected."
What I can do:
Delete folders
Read
Copy from sd card to Windows
What throws the error:
Creating a folder
Copying files to the sd card
On the device itself I cannot get any file manager to write to the external sd card. Apps that try to setup write permissions to the sd card fail. Android itself was able to move photos and music to the sd card when I inserted it into the phone. If I try to move any app to the SD card it says there is not enough space. It has 14gb free.
I finally tried using another computer. The other system is Windows 7 and I was able to created folders and copy files to the external sd card in the phone.
Back to my main system (Windows 8.1) I used USBDeview and cleared ALL usb drivers. Reconnected keyboard and mouse. Then plugged in the phone... same behavior. I have also tried installing Motorola's driver suite and have the same result. I have tried various USB ports on my motherboard both USB 2 and 3.
I'm at loss of what to try next, besides a blunt object to both devices repeatedly.
And I may have just fixed the problem of moving apps to the external SD card.
I erased the card while it was still in the phone. I did this the first time I put it in. I choose NOT to have Android copy over music and photos. Now I can move apps over to the SD card.
However, when trying to create a folder on the SD card from Windows Explorer it just hangs: SD card (Not Responding). It does show "New Folder" after terminating file explorer and looking at the SD card again. And now.... I can rename the folder, create folders, and copy files to the SD card... wtf.
Perhaps the SD card is bad, it is incredibility inconsistent.

I have a 2nd Gen Moto G with Android 5.0.2 and I'm trying to move apps to the SD card as well. I'm a bit confused as to what steps you followed. Are you saying that BECAUSE you erased the SD card and chose not to have Android copy music and photos that you can now move apps to the card? Or are you saying that since reversing your decision and allowing Android to copy over music and photos (and possibly reformatting your erased card?) that you can now move apps to the card? And can you transfer any apps or only certain apps? Are you doing this on your phone or on your computer?
I can transfer certain apps to my SD card on the phone. And using the computer and Windows Explorer I can create a new folder on the SD card. I'm just not sure what steps to take next to transfer the apps to the card, or what impact there might be on data or functionality.
