I cant work out how to assign different ringtones to different callers in my contacts list. I can enter edit mode in contacts view and change notification sound, and can change group membership, but I cannot change ringtone. I have tried it with the fiull contacts file copied from Google to Phone...makes no difference. I cannot see how to copy contacts to the SIM...maybe that is what is required..? Can anyone help please..?

I dont see anything unusual. Do you not have this ringtone line on your edit contact screen? All my contacts are just on google, not on phone or sim.
Are you trying to change to a stock ringtone, or a custom one? I had trouble changing to some custom tones, then i realized the phone didn't like the capitalization of the folder in which my ringtones were in, after changing the folder name from "Ringtone" to "ringtone" I was able to change.
I had that issue also. I went into settings/sound and notification and turned off "Ringtone ID". When that was turned off, I was able to assign specific ringtones to specific contacts.
Perhaps that may help?

I am trying to assign a new "mail" sound to a soundset but It only gives you an option to listen to it along with other notifications. Does anyone know how to edit that?
Use root explorer and drop the new files you would like to use in the appropriate folder in /system/media/audio
I wonder why I can change the ringtone and notification but not email sound? The thunderbolt is like an iPhone it doesnt allow you to change the email sound
What email app are you using? You should be able to open setting inside the app and then change it from there... as in for gmail, open gmail, menu, more, settings, select ringtone. if you copied the ringtone you want in the folder i posted above it should show up in there now.
Stock email app syncing with exchange. When I click on menu, settings, notification settings I only get checkmarks for "email notifications" Notification sounds" and Notification Vibrate"
There is no option to choose a sound.
Tried to do this last night and it took me a while. I kept looking under the email settings and Sound but couldn't find it. You have to go through Personalize:
Settings--->Personalize---> Notification Sound
From there you can change Message, Calendar and Email.
I don't use that one but i believe that it using the default notification sound. Place your file in /system/media/audio/notifications and then reboot your phone. Go into settings, notifications and you should see the new tones listed.

Ha. I had set it up when I first got the phone. I added some CM7 notifications last night and for the life of me couldn't figure out how to set them again. I kept looking in email settings and Setting->Sound thinking I was crazy.

Hi all,
Just wanted to know how i can change incoming system sounds now my phone has been rooted
1) I want to be able to change SMS, Email, Alarm?
2) Wanted to know were to store/place ringtone files?
3) Does anyone know if the standard alarm have a snooze function?
After the above i want to change to custom icons

The alarm clock has snooze by default.
For my ringtones etc, I have a folder on my SD named Media and sub folders marked notifications, ringtones, alarms, wallpapers. The phone seems to be able to make sense of this and shows the alarms in the alarm clock etc.
To change ringtones etc you go into the app and press the menu button. You should be able to change the tones etc in there.
For changing ringtones and sms tones, you go into settings. (on your home screen press menu) go to Audio (or Sound/Notifications, whatever our may be) and there you'll have the options to change type ringtone and sms notifications.
Setting different tones for every audio requires you to go into that app and change the settings individually.

this has worked you have to create the folder in the phones memory not external SD card.
how do i customise notification for each item i.e. I want a different one for SMS, EMail, Voicemail etc.
but the options only allows for one notification for all?

You need to go into each app and in the settings menu there should be an option for notifications.

mine work from external sd but have it rooted and r/w files ke7 firmware
Hi,
thanks for the replies,
Does anyone know if its possible to have different notification i.e. SMS, EMail, voicemail etc?
at the moment its seems like you can only have one notification sound for all.

I have the GNote i717 and have a number of sound files (mp3) in the notifications folder and not all of them show up when I try to assign a specific sound to an event. I know the file is there, but it won't show up on the list of available notifications to choose. I deleted a few and then a few of the files I previously couldn't see started showing up.
I'm using the stock message app, but my custom ringtones are not in the pick list.
Do they need to go in a specific folder? Is there an alternative to getting custom tones for contact?

You may need to set the permissions to the ringtone for them to be recognized. rw-r--r-. Hope this helps.
Put tones into ringtone, notification, and alarm folders, they will show up after a reboot.
Edit: if they show up, but don't play, fix permissions as stated above.

hi guys.. Please help me with my galaxy note.. My phone suddenly change its ringtone (whatsapp, call ringtone, sms, etc) to default ringtone by itself.. And when i want to change it again the option is missing.. Could anybody help me to solve this problem??
Whatsapp tone can be changed by to its settings.
For Messages too I think it can be by going to its settings. ( I am just guessing because I am a Samsung user too)
For call, ringtone and SMS try to change via your MUSIC PLAYER or FILE MANAGER.
Open your x ringtone in music player, go to options, choose SET AS, and then Ringtone.
If that is also not available try by long pressing the .mp3 or .ogg file and choose SET AS and then as your Ringtone.
Done.
