Hey everyone. I'm starting to get into more gaming on my mobile devices and now that I have an Xperia Tablet Z I'm getting even more into it because of the large screen.
I know the tablet has Dualshock 3 controller drivers built in and I've been able to try it. It worked easily and flawlessly which was great, but the problem is that I don't own any PS3 controllers. I've used an app that allows my to connect my Xbox One controller to the tablet which is awesome, but it needs to be plugged in the entire time and I can only connect one Xbox controller to the tablet at a time. I've realized that bluetooth is the way to go for having wireless gaming as well as multiple controllers connected.
So the question is: Will the PS3 controllers be my best bet to use specifically with the Xperia Tablet Z, or will I be better off saving some money on generic android bluetooth controllers? Or maybe even the generic versions of the PS3 controllers? I like being able to just turn the controller on and have it connect automatically without having to open any other apps and sync or go through settings to get it to work.
I'm a complete noob when it comes to bluetooth controllers on tablets so maybe any bluetooth controller can sync up with the tablet without issues and I just don't know that. Right now I'm leaning towards buying authentic PS3 controllers to guarantee that they will just connect when I turn them on, but if I can save a bunch of money and get the generic version of the Dualshock 3 controllers then I'll absolutely do that instead. I just don't want to buy those just to find out that they don't work.
Any help, even if you can just share your experience with controllers that you've used would be super helpful.
Thanks!
...Now that I think about it. We might as well start a list of controllers that work well and don't work well with the Xperia Tablet Z.
Controllers that work great:
Authentic Sony Dualshock 3 controller:
-Built in drivers.
-Fast setup.
-No need for OTG after initial setup.
-Can connect multiple controllers (at least 2 haven't tried more than that).
Generic SixAxis controllers (don't have rumble feature)
-Exactly the same as authentic Dualshock 3 controller except that there is no rumble feature.
-Costs significantly less.
Nyko Playpad Pro
-Just ordered this (got it for $14 on nomorerack.com).
-Will update this section once I have a chance to try it out.
I have a PS3 controller but mine is a different one.
Normally you have a DUALSHOCK, but I was informed that exist a model called only SIXAXIS, and this one is what I have.
I bought a refurbished one and works perfectly.
The main diferences between the two is that the DUALSHOK has a vibrator in each side and the SIXAXIS doesn´t.
In fact if you don´t mind about something vibrating on you hand, you should go for a SIXAXIS, is lighter, so will be more confortable to play for long periods
I don´t have it here with me right now but you can see the diference looking above of the charge/player LED, is written SIXAXIS, instead of DUALSHOCK.
Anyway, hope it help you decide :good:
Cheers
EDIT:
I forgot to say that is cheaper too, I payed around of $28 with tax.
Usually the DUALSHOCK is (at least in Canada) $54 - $60 without taxes

Thanks! I'll add that to the list. It sounds much better than paying full price for the dualshock. I'm assuming it connects the same way as the Dualshock? Just plug it in, turn the controller on, wait for it to connect, then unplug the controller?
How did you connect two dualshocks at once?

It took a bit to figure it out, but it's actually pretty simple.
-Start with both controllers off.
-Go to Settings>Xperia Connectivity>DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller>How to connect controller.
-Connect the first controller via USB. The controller should power on, bluetooth should turn enable itself on the tablet then the tablet will tell you that the controller is connected.
-Unplug the first controller and make sure it is still working (go to home screen and try selecting apps with the joystick).
-Go back to the "How to connect controller" section and plug in the second controller (make sure the 1st controller didn't turn off). The tablet should tell you that the controller is connected. You should be able to unplug that one and use both now.
You may not need to go into the "How to connect controller" menu to do this initial setup, but that's how I got it working. After this initial setup you should just be able to turn the controllers on and have them sync up to your tablet automatically (providing the tablet had bluetooth turned on). Let me know if you have any issues getting it to work.

You do the same way you do with the Dualshock.
Like I said it is original, except for the vibrators.
So yes! Way better than pay double of the price for something that shake in your hand.
Cheers
Xperia Z3

You probably would get a more relative answer by posting your question in the Sony Xperia Z3 forum.

Thanks, I will try it there, although it isn't restricted at Xperia Z3.
I also have the z3 and my question is with 2 dualshock 3 controllers does it work well with multiplayer in emulators? I want to be able to play Mario kart and goldeneye 2 player
You can use any bluetooth controller with just this simple app
Just install SixAxis Controller app from google playstore and you can connect bluetooth controller from it. But note that, to use this app your tablet must be rooted.
With the help of this app you can also map keys of your controller to your tablet.
I play modern combat 4 using custom mapped controllers using sixaxis controller app. You can also use your controller as a native controller and enjoy games in default keymapping.
This app will require you to connect your controller with OTG cable for initial setup and later on you can connect your controller via bluetooth.
You can find the app here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller&hl=en
I'm a Tablet Z gamer myself. I use PS3 controller on my Xperia Tablet Z LTE. It works great. But for instance, some game like Modern Combat 4 have horrible default keymapping and SixAxis controller app is the best alternative for it..
But be assured that, Six axis controller app is a paid app so buy at your own risk. It's working for me very well, so it must work with most of the android devices.
You can read my experience on gaming with my tablet on this thread:

I hope you find this information helpful to you.

Hi,
has someone managed to connect the Playstation 4 Controller with the Z2 ?

I'm eager to try this, my phone is on its way to its new home, so as soon as it arrives I will check it with my PS3 and PS4 controllers. PS3 controller works like a charm on the Xperia tablet with no additional drivers, it is plug n play!
As for the supported games, I'm thinking that maybe all or most of the games on the Playstation mobile store are compatible, other that than I don't know. Cheers.
I can confirm that they do work together.
All you need to do is hold the share and home (PS) button together until the lightbar on the pad starts to flash, once done you just need to pair it via Bluetooth.
Let me know if you need any further help.

So I connected my PS 4 controller with my Z2.
The setup was very easy.
But when I use it with games it's reaction is bad. So when I push a button it takes a while till something happens in the game.
Any ideas?
Thx!

It's coming soon. I saw it in an ad somewhere (Xperia Z2 running a game with PS4 controller in the background).
Z2 smartphone got already several firmware updates from Sony since the last post on this thread.
Did anyone try to connect the dualshock 4 to Z2 again? and see if it is working perfectly now?

They'll probably make it backwardly compatible, like they did with the Z.... eventually.

Not only will ds4 work on the z3 but so will remote play from the ps4, looking at specs of the z3 it seems no different to my z2 ,well z3 is clocked at 2.5 instead of 2.3ghz, but apart from that the differences seem to be cosmetic.
I am more than a bit annoyed about remote play being included, one of the reasons i bought a z2 (not only reason, but a main one) was sony's way of making there products connect to each other. I remember the ps3 controller worked first with an xperia phone before others. My phone isnt even 6 months old yet and instead of getting features added through updates it seems like sony are keeping these features to sell there next handset.
In all fairness tho, its only remote play and a few tweaks to audio player that make the z3 any different to the z2

Well mate, they have to compete with others, we are all whining about this 6 month old cycle, I myself as well whine about it,
but they cannot show up with nothing at IFA knowing that Samsung is gonna present their Note 4. They are clearly trying to achieve best smartphone of the year thing, but I think they should have gone same as Samsung, in first half of the year the Z line, second half Ultra line maybe.
It's kinda annoying when they are upgrading the same model twice per year mostly because no new things, especially now this z3.
They probably modded camera now how it should be, added HQ to speakers and remote control for ps4, I doubt we will see those things in z2 officially. But then again, we are being late with 4.4.4 with a good reason, most probably because those features, or at least some of them, are gonna hit z2.
And I'm being sceptic with this new IP rating. It's making me think what has changed, and does z2 suffer from building issue regarding waterproof, more and more I see threads about phone leaking water inside even tho I never experienced that, but that's mostly because my device was only few times exposed to heavy rain, but never dunked in water, nor it will ever be since it slipped out of my hand and I had to replace back cover.

i couldnt agree more.... if they want a 6 month cycle they should be doing it with 2 models, what annoys me is the specs are essentially the same, this isnt a new sony phone...... its an overclocked z2 with a few new features which claim to be exclusive but probably wont even need to be modified to work on z2.

I was checking the Sony DualShock wireless 3 controller.. for my xperia zu.. bt cost me around 5000.that price is quite heavy .so I want to know if any othey(any cheap brand controler) can work on my device..
Almost any USB gamepad. You'll need an USB OTG cable for this to work. Generally it is Plug'n'Play. I can play SA2 with my XBOX 360 controller :good:

Depends on the game really. I've used my PS3 kontroller a couple of times, and you'll have to map the controlls yourself if the game doesn't support it natively. It's not that hard to do (using SixAxis Controller), but it's kind of annoying when you have a fully functioning controller, but the game won't recognize it. The game description in the Play Store will usually tell if the game is compatible with a controller, so check that before you buy anything.
Well. I used to play with emulators most of them supports a gamepad. but there are tons of games with gamepad support. Check out this link: http://androidgamepadgames.com
wonder if i can connect a steering wheel and have force-feedback work...
I got the remote play stuff working just fine but can't seem to get any of the dualshock 4 stuff to work. Has anyone successfully gotten a dualshock 4 to sync up with an xperia tablet z? I tried getting the ported xperiaconnectivity stuff to work but couldnt get that working either, it seems to pair over bluetooth but just never works. I know they don't have it working in the remote play threads but figured if it would be working it would be on the xperia tablet z since its got the dualshock3 stuff already. Wish sony would just officially bring over remoteplay/dualshock4 support to the z, specs wise its not that far off from the z2.
I've got the same problem.
