[Q] Outdoor Automatic Brightness Not working - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hi
I'm just wondering if anyone else on here is facing the same issue? Or if this is working flawlessly for everyone?
When I have the phone on automatic brightness and go outside on a sunny day, the display will occasionally turn on the maximum brightness mode, but only for about 2-10 seconds and then it goes back to the standard maximum brightness that you can manually adjust it to. It also doesn't go back to the super bright mode after no matter how long I have tried to get it back. I even aimed the screen right towards the sun in hopes the screen would get bright again. The super bright mode works maybe once every time I turn the phone on, and then immediately turns back off, after a few seconds, extremely frustrating.
Is anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it? Maybe there is some way to manually activate the outdoor mode?

Thanks

I also want to have this function manual enable but at the moment I think they don't care about this. The screen is too dim compare with other top phone. I have 2 lg g5 and I think that is the reason I am gonna sell both phones.

It may be too dim in Auto but the maximum brightness is bright enough. I don't need to burn my eyes. The maximum brightness is already too much for day-to-day use.
I do wish :
1. that 100% will be the true 100% of this screen - meaning the brightness boost I get in the sun.
2. the in the display setting, I could set the auto brightness to be + X% of the default value. For example, if I set it to +20%, then if the usual auto mode sets the brightness to 50%, it will actually set it to 60%.
Overall this phone is solid, fast, camera is amazing , sound is good ..Sure, a 3500mah could have been nice but I'm happy.

[Q] No Auto-Brightness Setting in 2.1?!

I just installed Android 2.1 and rooted it. In the brightness setting there is no longer a selection to choose the Auto-brightness setting, just a slider for low and high brightness.
Also I noticed the Power Widget that has the brightness control switch lets you switch between low, auto, and high, but while in Auto (the dimmer setting while the button is ON), the sensitivity is very poor and will only brighten the display by about 10% while moving from a very dark environment to a very bright environment.
Yup, i agree. This sucks. Although i had forgoten how nice everything looks with the brightness turned up. All the same id like to have it back.

cant expect everything in 2.1 to be perfect. Yes it has taken them a while but i wouldnt expect it to be without any flaws!
At least we got it finally. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT

I thought this today too but the Auto Brighten IS there and still working, just a bit differently.
Initially you choose the 3 levels of brightness on the quick select from the 5 widget icons. This is the brightest it will go, but if you go from a dark or light room it DOES indeed still adjust.
I noticed this after a bit today just standing in the kitchen watching the movers do their thing at my old place. The sun was ducking in and out of the clouds and the auto function was working fine. I tried it in all 3 modes, the only one it doesn't do anything in is the least bright mode...the one I noticed it most is the middle bright mode.
So YES, it is indeed working, just differently.
The auto Brightness sucked in 1.6 anyway. It was never that good for me. I use a brightness widget to adjust it.
I much prefer the way it works now. Seems to be a lot more user friendly tbh
have you tried the setting in spare parts (from the market)?
I've not tried it myself, but I know the auto setting is there.
Auto birghtness
Hmm. I have the 2.1 update and I have set the brightness to the low setting in the power widget. The brightness still adjusts automatically, and I don't want it to. I want it to stay at a low level all the time to save my battery. How?!

Auto brightness

Does anyone have a solution to auto brightness issue?
Even in the darkest room, the lowest light level is "medium" and not low! Its excellent setting when using phone outdoors but in dark room or at night its just too bright. Is my phone broken or is it general windows phone setting?

on my titan, the auto brightness behaviour is erratic and sometimes goes too low.
the camera is one of the issue triggers. after every return from a photo session, the screen goes to a lower brightness.
also, sometimes it happens when unlocking the phone but i don't know what triggers it. then suddenly the screen would return to its normal brightness after a few seconds, although not always.
i suppose it's a driver issue...

so you get the autobrightness to go as low as 'low' set manually? - I tried it but even after camera the lowest brightness I am getting is same as 'medium' when set manually!

no, not that low only lower.
but you are right, even in complete darkness the screen won't go to its lowest setting...
Yes same issue here.
Automatic can go a little bit lower than medium, but not much. Too bright in dim environement.
For general use, i would like to have a preset between low and medium
Since these days many people like ultra bright screens (and ultra loud sound) i am not sure HTC will try to fix this "issue".
I just hope Microsoft can add a brightness slider in the future. (Or bility to set the min auto and max auto levels)
Btw, do you know why camera mode go into max brightness ? This is a little harsh indoor.

Yes that behaviour is very strange too! I think it's present only in the Titan. Some other windows phone manage the camera brightness a little better. But then I think increased brightness while using camera sort of makes it little pleasant when using it outdoors. But indoors as you mentioned, it's a bit too harsh brightness!
I think it's the light sensor that doesn't work properly. Some places/forums mentioned about issues with various HTC driverseven after those 2 softwares updates we received in Nov-early Dec.
In daylight, the auto brightness works wonderfully for me,I never change it.
But in a fairly dark room,it's too bright and most of the time,I set it to low
I usually set it to medium... and set to low by myself by night.
I have sent a message to HTC (via theirs contact/ticket system) about the "can be improved" auto brightness, and "camera set brightness to max" issues.
Better than nothing.
Since this is a easily reproductible problem, maybe they can take a look if they receive several messages about this.
I wonder if the screen going to max brightness with camera may have something to do with the "HTC Camera modes" addon ? (who knows..)
But i don't see how to remove it. I even can't find it on the marketplace (under HTC section).
I have same issue, I get blinded when I check the time on my phone at night
It was there even before camera modes update was applied by HTC. So unlikely

Obviously, the brightness go to max too when using skype with video.
Hope they will notice and fix it.
Trying to talk to HTC customer service is especially unhelpful here in france.
They have absolutely no knowledge of theirs WP7 products
(whatever the problem encountered)
Now that we have unlocked roms, any way to tweak the auto brightness ?

I've tried all 4 ROMs and they have the same behaviour as stock ROM at the moment. But it might be useful looking into the registry threshold values. I know there is some sort of home brew app that lets us set the volume increase in 10s, 20s, 30s or 50s. So a regedit might be somewhere, will dig around myself since you've reminded me again

[Q] Auto Brightness: Toggling Up/Down/Up/Etc...

In CyanogenMod, I was a fan of the setting that allowed me to "prevent phone's auto brightness from going down".
I like auto brightness and appreciate its ability to save battery life when indoors vs. enabling me to see the phone if I go outside in a high light situation.
However, under florescent lights, or in a room with a definitive light source (single lamp in dark room)... the phone's sensor keeps jumping it between light levels where the screen brightness goes up and down.... up and down... It's a bit dizzying and makes the phone somewhat uncomfortable to use.
Anyone find an app or workaround to automatically achieve what I want... other than... disabling auto brightness when it starts, setting an appropriate brightness level, and then, trying to remember to re-enable later when I'm outside (and of course, have a hard time then seeing the phone )
?

What happened to Auto Brightness with the Marshmallow update

Auto brightness... What happened? It used to just work. You know, automatically. If you adjusted the slider it would snap out of Auto mode and lock to what ever you set it at. Going back to full auto was a s simple as selecting the checkbox again in the quick settings.
I don't know if it's part of Marshmallow or TouchWiz but now the brightness slider controls the automatic-ness of the brightness. So its more like a auto "range selector" or "sensitivity selector" it seems. Its more of a semi-automatic mode.
If you set it to ~50% the brightness will adjust +/- 10% around that setting. But it doesn't seem to just automatically do 0-100% on its own anymore.
Set it near 100% and it'll practically refuse to dim in low indoor lighting.
It also seems to respond to whether or not you're holding the phone. It'll get brighter no matter what (thankfully), but it will not lower the screen brightness until you put it down on a horizontal surface... Kind of annoying if you're reading and happen to walk in to a dim room and you're being blinded by your phone until you put it down and then pick it back up. I have Smart Stay turned off so that's not it.
I definitely prefer the plain old, dumb, just works, auto-brightness that I could snap on and off if I needed. Now its...complicated. Why "fix" what isn't broken. Was it confusing some people?
I tried Lux Brightness control app but I'm not sure it's really what I'm looking for. It's too much. I just want "set it and forget it" Automatic (0-100%) brightness like it used to be.
It's a feature. The brightness slider will now bias the automatic setting toward higher or lower brightness while still maintaining the automatic adjustment functionality. Turn off the automatic setting check-box to accomplish full manual control.
What ever happened to just plain Automatic? I don't want to have to mess with a slider. It adjusted the brightness fine before. I find that now it's either too bright or too dim for many situations and I'm constantly messing with the slider. Whereas before, auto was just auto.
Same problem here... It is very annoying

Interestingly, with my old s3 and now my current s6, when looking at battery usage, the screen was always about 15% and usually the second item in the list of things that use the most battery power. It was what I always loved about amoled. Now, screen is number one and comes in at ~50% after the marshmallow update. I wonder if it's because it's always so bright now? Or perhaps they've changed how battery usage is measured. Not much I can do about it. Just an a interesting observation.

Too stupid for auto display brightness ?

Hi guys, how is the auto display brightness setting working
I've set it on automatic (checkbox is enabled), but when i go outside the brightness doesn't change.
I have to raise it manually on the slide down menue.
When going back inside the screen is too bright and i have to lower it again manually.
I can't notice any automatic change.
Phone is 100% stock.
Any ideas?
If you adjust it manualy even ONCE, the automatic brightness gets bugged( or this is how it works, idk).
To get it back working, go to display- and decheck and recheck the automatic and you are good to go.
Thanks for the update.
I would expect the auto adjustment to work again "normally" after closing and re-enabling the screen.
It will work, i encoutered the same problem after i manually adjusted it.
Well, honestly it's a pretty complicated procedure to get it right, you need to go to your average lighting place of use, I mean, if you are mostly in a dark room, you set the brightness as comfortably as you can, and leave it there, if you check the sliding bar for the Brightness while changing ambient light conditions it should move automatically, but it will only do it between a range, it should adjust the situation based on a comparison between the light conditions you setted up and the actual.
So, maybe if you go from a totally dark room to a sunny beach at noon, you won't see enough adjustment on the brightness because the algorithm isn't as smart to see that, it only moves certain percentage, in that you situation you should need to play a little bit with the brightness, something like setting up the dark place with more brightness in order to get a little more when you change to a very bright place.
I think it got better with the update today.
Put it on full brightness when leaving the office due to the sun.
After installing the update it went to almost lowest brighness.
Hope it goes back up tomorrow morning and its no coincidence.
